  • I bought this John Deere 400 for cheap knowing it had engine problems. In this video I am pulling the engine to see what kind of damage I am dealing with.

Mr. I feel your pain. I just had a right side connecting rod grenade itself inside the engine. Luckily the crank was good and the cylinder wasn’t damaged so I just slapped a new connecting ride. Use the old piston and I’ve got compression again tonight. The engines completely completely rebuilt and ready go back in that back bracket there by the oil cooler bolt onto the tractor before I put the engine on. I thought that thing coming off man.

The PTO poly, I drilled out all the spot welds and replaced the bearing inside of it and then took quarter 20 bolts and reassembled it and it worked great

Great tear down. I looked at an 82 400 this evening and it’s in great shape and runs very well. Only trouble is when we stopped after mowing for about 10 minutes, shut it down and pop the hood. There are 2 rectangular pieces on the top of the motor with a single nut in the center of each. One on each side of the carb. Any idea what these are for? There was a small amount of smoke coming from them. Hated to walk away from it for 1500 but I’m not looking for a huge project. Tractor never missed and beat other than this small amount of smoke. Thanks in advance

@@tightwadproductions961 pretty good actually the hardest part was building the drive shaft I had to take a 318 John Deere drive shaft witch bolts to the the Onan flywheel cut it in half and cut the original drive shaft in half and put the front half and back half together other than that it was a straight forward conversion and works good it wasn't to bad a job

Nice! I just finished adapting and shortening the driveshaft for my Yanmar. Did your motor end up being angled down slightly to the rear?
The only way I could get the PTO pulley and the rear driveshaft to line up correctly was to have my motor slanted down towards the transaxle.
