I have been retired for almost two years now - when I look in my closet I see LOTS of items that need to be removed. I recently saw a quote that spoke directly to me and how I should pare down. It goes "Instead of asking what if I need this some day, ask, what is someone else, today, needs it more." Such an eye opener. Thanks for your posts!
3 years retired. Kept a couple of slacks for dress occasions and got rid of all the rest of my work outfits! Shoes too. Capri pants, same style of tee shirt, crocs for shoes. That's it!!! I finally bought a new pair of crocs for the dressy occasions!!!!! Folded in drawers. Chiffarobe has a number of jackets and coats, and the out of season drapes. I knew I would need to get a few new business casual pieces, but I didn’t want to spend much. I ended up buying five tops- one for Monday, one for Tuesday, etc. All of the tops can go with jeans, black pants, or a black skirt. I basically wear the same outfit each Monday, each Tuesday, etc. I have two dresses that I mix in when I feel like it just to keep it from being so repetitive. I like all of the pieces I chose and getting ready in the morning has never been easier!!
Love wearing flannel shirts. Dumped the cheap ones, invested in 4 LLBean ones in petite and and have been wearing all winter now for 5 years. Quality over quantity.
Joshua, I started watching your videos a month ago and I can say that I am on my minimalist journey. I just sold some of my belongings and donated and threw away others. I used to SHOP til I DROP but now I only shop for food , medicine, cleaning supplies and toiletries. I have very few clothes now!
I'm reminded of model/actress/author/film-maker Isabella Rossellini who went for years and was known for always wearing a black blazer, white t-shirt, white socks along with black loafers from the mens's section of the shoe store. In her book "Some of Me" Ms. Rossellini said she got the idea from being at a party in the home of her employer and on the way to the bathroom she saw in his open closet that he had many slight variations (ie: lightweight material for summer; different kinds of material) of what was really just one outfit. --- I'm close to that myself with just a few pieces of clothing and I wear what used to be called "Sunday go to meeting clothes": for church I wear one of two white shirts and the same black pants.
I have lost a significant amount of weight and was happy to donate clothes that are now too large! The donation center told me that they do not get good quality plus size clothing, so they were glad to get the items I brought. Now I am trying to be much more thoughtful and minimal about my new wardrobe and what comes into it :)
I paired down quite a bit. I’m now in a phase of wearing everything I kept that isn’t my daily go to . At the end of the day I decide if it’s a keep or pass item. My other rule is, I have to love it, no being on the fence about it. No questions of how it looks on me, is it starting to look worn, will I fit it if I loose 5 more pounds….all of those mean they get passed on. Absolutely have to love it. If I’m on the fence at all then it gets passed on. I do intend to replace a couple pairs of jeans with a higher quality, more comfortable pair. There are about 5 more items to wear and decide on and then a bag of bathing suits (going to pick 2) and I think I will have reached my long time goal of a minimalist wardrobe. Thanks for all your great content!
Great tips Joshua. As I decluttered my wardrobe like an onion, I took out all the mismatched hangers as my inventory went down. I gave my closet a good clean and fresh paint, and now have all white hangers. Making it pretty helped me want to keep everything simple and well organized. I have a shoe rack that fits only 9 pair (all seasons) and that’s all I have. I pared my jewelry WAY down too. Now it is so easy peasy to be dressed, feeling good and on my way for whatever adventures the day brings.

It’s a helpful concise list. I’ve made some online sale purchases from a designer brand in the last few days, but the clothes fit well and they’re high quality. I’ve developed my own minimalist classic wardrobe style. I’ll admit as an older man I have a different sense of the importance of appearance and clothing than younger people. There will be a few replacements but probably just two suits, a black one for funerals, and either a grey or royal blue suit, and a few sport coats, no more than four.
I agree with you! I’ve had girlfriends since my divorce that “don’t like MY style” and tried to change me. Those clothes are gone just like the girlfriend! 😂 I prefer simple style in a semi-formal button-down shirts with nice jeans.
@@08Cruiser That’s fantastic. Button down is my favorite shirt, primarily white almost like a uniform. I’ve altered a number into perfect untucked length. The Oxford button down is where it’s at. But for classic Ralph Lauren polos I have more colors and styles. Also boat shoes, always gonna’ be right for Summer with 9 inch shorts, or khakis and no show socks. Buy great shoes and rebuild them over time. Thanks for your comment. And good luck to you. I hope you find what and who you’re looking for.
I too prefer formal clothing (outside of brightly coloured knitwear), I tend to prefer linen trousers, flat footwear and shirts and blouses. It makes me feel more put together and I think it complements the knitwear nicely 😁
I gave away 5 garbage bags of clothes. (I lost 60 lbs) It’s almost time to go back through again. I haven’t added much, but I know there’s a few things I no longer need.
Another tip for tracking what you wear to help minimize is flipping all of your hangers backwards and then turning them the right way once an item is worn. Makes it super easy to see what you don't wear over whatever given period of time you set.
I rotated my hangers by pulling the front item first and then when washed, putting the items in the back (moving left to right if that makes sense? And sliding everything along). It's a good suggestion and it really helped me see what I enjoyed and what I hated
I have 20 black velvet hangers and 10 wooden pants hangers, and that's all I need. Actually, 5 of the 10 pants hangers are going to be going away. Nothing else is going in the closet. People really don't pay attention to what you're wearing. They remember what you said, or how you made them laugh, not whether you had the latest trend on. As for getting rid of things, look for "Dress for Success" groups in your area - you can donate business clothing to them so people who can't afford a suit or nice pants and a blazer can get to an interview and get a job. MUCH better than being stuffed in a closet doing no one any good.
Absolutely agree! Minimalism in the closet often leads to clarity in life. Focusing on what truly matters-not just fashion-can be liberating. Love the idea of donating to "Dress for Success"-it makes a real impact. I share similar fashion insights and minimalist tips on my channel, where we explore style beyond trends!
Great tips in this podcast. I have been losing weight on purpose. I find I am not buying anything until I lose more. I did buy swimsuit bottoms bc they one I had was falling off. No flashing…haha. I’m 2 sizes smaller there. In fall plan to get a few new things when I see how much more weight I can lose. The goal 40 more lbs. hopefully by mid October will have lost 20 of it. Also bought swim bottoms bc I joined gym with indoor pool so I can swim year round. Best part my insurance pd my membership in full. I’m happy to be doing this new healthier lifestyle. Minimalism has taught me much. I’m hoping I will be able to donate my clothing by Christmas. I will be sure to be careful what I purchase by then. That’s the plan. Wish me luck and hard work.
When I was on a weight loss journey I was able to buy a pair of pants at a resale shop to get me through the next phase. Felt good to get the larger stuff decluttered.
Yes to all of this! I would add in that it is important to remember "age and stage"...I worked in two very dissparate fields and the dress codes were different. Now I am semi retired and doing dog sitting on the side. This made it easy to get rid of business suits, dresses and any fancy clothes. I kept one special occasion dress and sold almost every other fancy outfit :) And forget about heels at this stage of the game. If the shoes/clothes are not comfortable they are GONE..
The first step has tremendous effect! Track and tally your clothing expense for a year and you will be surprised how much you spend on clothes. I set a budget on clothing for 2 years. It is hard in the beginning to see I get to spend so much less (but so much more reasonable) on clothing. That made me really think twice when I see a clothing piece I like. I start to feel that there is an opportunity cost for every piece I buy. if I decide to buy this piece, I may not have enough budget for the next one I like. So I think very thoroughly before buying one and really love it afterwards. That brings peace to my wardrobe. We don’t need every nice clothing in the world.
I finally got my wardrobe down to keeping only the clothes that I really like. There's lots less in there but I feel like I have more because I enjoy everything that I put on. Great video as always!
My wardrobe is my next area I am working on tackling. Very helpful advice i will use. Thank you.Fewer and better will stay in my mind when replaced items are needed.
I haven't purchased any clothes since 2018 and recently donated a lot of tops that I hadn't worn since then, some with the tags intact. I'm left with items I wear, but don't like because they are too big and make me feel uncomfortable. My issue is getting out there and shopping, which I've always hated (especially with a friend tagging along) , all the racks and trying on of items. Somehow I'm going to have to dig deep inside myself to just get up and tackle this issue.
Hi Joshua! Thank you for a timely reminder to be true to myself. I'm at an age where those videos of "These styles make you look older" somehow draw me. I don't mind looking my almost-60, but I don't want to look frumpy, either. Sticking to my personal style ought to cover both of those goals and not strain either my budget, or my closet space.
I wear a lot of black and it’s my style. I do choose quality over quantity. It has helped me so much. I always know I am at least presentable. Lol. Love love this Chanel and the great message Joshua provides us!thank you!!!
Joshua, as always, this gives me inspiration and a desire to be a more human person. I never tire of your videos and look forward always to the next one. Thank you for all your help. 😊
Good basic tips. If I removed clothes that didn't fit or look flattering, nor the right color, I'd literally have 1-2 days of clothes max. Sad but true. I really need to do some shopping. The good news is that I can replace pieces that don't work when I acquire new ones, and everything fits in my closet.
From owning 6 shelves of clothing, today I've cut down to 2 shelves that includes even festive wear as we've many festivals here in India. The feeling is so 😇😇
That's a fantastic accomplishment! Minimalism really brings clarity and joy, especially in a vibrant culture like India where festivals can easily lead to clutter. I share similar experiences on my channel, focusing on simplifying life while still embracing those special moments. Keep up the inspiring work!
I went through my closet for repairs/alteration matched and sewed in buttons, fixed necklines, etc; and got a seamstress to hem up a few items. It’s also super satisfying keeping clothes in good repair as it helps you either keep using them well, or recognise they are definitely good enough to help someone else.
When I first decided to try minimalism. I tried it with my clothes first. It was such a success I decided to change my whole life to being minimalist. Its taken me a lot of time to figure out what I like to wear. But with the guidance of buying less it hasn't been too costly to try out the different styles I was drawn to. I'm now very happy with my minimalist wardrobe.
I buy most of my clothes in charity shops. That's been the worst thing for the size of my wardrobe. I always buy quality too. It's so hard keeping it decluttered, but your tips have inspired me.( last time i tried, i got one pair of trousers out.😂)
Have a shopping list. I buy all my clothes second hand too, but at the start of each season, I go through my clothes and note any 'gaps' or things that are getting worn-out and will need replacing and make a list of items I need to trawl the charity shops to find! I do have a couple of items that I will buy when I see them, regardless of whether I need them or not. For example, I have a specific brand of jeans that I like, and they don't always come up in charity shops when I need them, so if I see a barely used pair at a reasonable price, I buy them and store them away for when one of my current pairs wears out. Items that are easier to find, I just wait until I actually need them before buying.
@pippas5808 thanks, that's really helpful. The jeans issue, the same brand do trousers, and they always fit perfectly, so I realise that's a problem. I've moved house to an area where the charity shops are awful, and whoever it was that donated my favourite brand remains in the other place, lol. I'm going to ban myself from entering such establishments ,and no new clothes for a year. 🙂🙏
Joshua boa noite.
I've been trying to tackle this issue for my teen son. I've noticed, though, he wears clothes hard, so it's a relief to have a back-up in case. Last weekend doing laundry, I noticed a nice, newer pair of light blue shorts which had black marks and mini holes on only half the seat. I think he sat on asphalt. After scrubbing with Dawn and tools, the material faded along with some spots but the miniature holes remained. It occurred to me, they were a goner, but luckily, we have 30 more pairs of shorts. I just know now not to buy light blue or light anything, again.
I have had a capsule wardrobe for several years now. I have nicer clothes and plenty of outfits. I have gone for brighter colours this year. You will still get to shop, but for specific items and I treat myself each season to a few new things.
I'm in the same boat, I have a colourful capsule wardrobe since black doesn't suit me and white washes me out. I think autumn colours and marine tones work well for me, plus they're very easy to match with other things ❤️
I wore a uniform for 27 years consisting of navy blue shorts blue T-shirt and joggers now retired still wear the same just added my colours into it 👍🏻👍🏻
I have decluttered a lot of clothes, but why do I still have so many that I don"t use??? ok - don't answer that😄. I have to try your suggestion of_ checking it regularly, and creating my style. This makes a lot of sense. Thanks again for the inspiration Joshua
I used to laugh when my mother was decluttering when i was in my 30s. Now guess what i am now downsizing as i find with retirement the need for a lot of stuff whether it's clothes or household items is becoming unnecessary so my local lifeline shop has received boxes and bags of stuff.. also when i put on a piece of clothing and it doesn't work out it goes in favour of one that does... i have tried to be firm all my life. Thanks for reaffirming that good habits are good for everyone.
I watch your videos and have learned alot. Thank you for your advice. What do you do if your spouse opposes to remove their clothing? The feeling of no accomplishment is present for me.
So I love the ideas. I'm still kinda confused about how much is enough and what is to much? Would an example for a man be 14 work/casual shirts and pants, socks, t-shirts and underwear? Then toss everything else. A reply for a guide-line would be appreciated. Thanks
I don't think you'll find any helpful guidelines. At least, not from me. What is the right amount for one person will look very different from what is the right amount for another person based on a whole bunch of factors. Each person needs to discover and define for themselves what is "enough." But I'll try to help. Are you wondering if you own just the right amount of stuff right now? Or do you look around your home and see that you have too much? If you know you own too much, then begin owning less. You'll find freedom-and the eventual answer to this question. Hope that helps.
I have black everything since I'm always at home, comfort over everything else lel and when I go out a few Scottish thread polo shirts for color, a lovely jade one, a blue one, a pink one, and that's that. Actually I always wear a simple gold bracelet and gold necklace that were gifted to me in my baptism, which go hella well with black, thanks relatives!
I have never spent much on clothing. I wear scrubs to work. I have a pair of black jeans, a pair of blue jeans, and a pair of black slacks. I have 3 t-shirts, a zip-up sweatshirt, 3 blouses, a cardigan, and one dress. I have one pair of sneakers, one pair of casual shoes, and one pair of low heels. That's it.
I have LOTS of clothes. The majority are hand me ups. Former roommate worked at a laundry mat and it is SO surprising what people abandon. I went through lots of clothes I redistributed. I LOVE my clothes. I have some assigned to months or seasons. But again I have redistributed LOTs and I might spend $20. a year on clothes. Can you say that?
Thanks! Do you have any suggestions (or videos) regarding getting your wife to join you in minimalism? It’s difficult getting her on board when Amazon and Temu packages are constantly arriving. 😭
YEARS AGO i decided "black shoes, black socks, black pants, charcoal or navy jacket. I could match every dress shirt with those pants. Next, any tie i had MUST have the same color of the shirt. And...i got dressed in THE DARK to not wake her... now, how did that work? BRILLIANT! It was a "modified eintstien move"
I've had to really say no to buying cheap fashion. It's taken me years to realise this, it doesn't last. I've now got my uniform, comfy yoga pants , t shirts and a 2nd layer. It makes me feel ready for the day and comfy. I just wear trainers now too. I'm in my late fifties and I don't care about what's in fashion anymore.
Don't have to worry about my clothes lol I wear black like you and I have been wearing things from 5 to 6 years ago.. clothes are not a priority. I am presentable at work, but only buy here ans there to update. All good there. Just trying to sell my 80's stuff lol
Normally I pay 50 to 100 € a year for clothing because I very rarely shop and mostly buy thrifted clothes. I constantly keep on decluttering my wardrobe. But it is not easy, cause there are a lot of items, that I wore on special occasions or moments, and even if they don't fit anymore or are not my style now, I want to keep them because of the memories.... What can I do?
@@suewarren4486 Thanks for writing me😊 It is a good idea and I tried it for a few Times, but it is not the same than having them for real..... Mh, it is difficult. But it is a luxury problem, I think 😊
The memories aren't in the clothes, they're in your mind and your heart. Write down a short description of the item and what memory you had that was special, and then free it up so someone else can enjoy it - via donation, or sell it and give the proceeds to your favorite charity.
@@giennefarcais6834 Thank you! What you said about the memories is true. And your advice about writing down is a very good idea. I will try that and also take a picture like the other commentor said. And yes, I mostly donate my clothes when I sort out. Thank you so much for understanding my trouble and writing me!! Greetings from Germany 😊
Any advice for people who love fashion but don’t like having too much but also get bored with pieces and find themselves decluttering and then purchasing entire new wardrobes every month? Lol
Ladies, do not throw out your After 5pm wear /special occasions. Keep them. I attended 3 weddings of siblings within 18 months after Covid lockdowns and had to buy 3 new wonderful dresses because l released my Special Occasions wardrobe out of cabin fever. I have 41 clothing items in my all year wardrobe (excluding sleepwear, underwear and 8 pairs of shoes). Out of the 41 items, 9 items are predominantly for corporate work wear. The benefit of having a few extra clothing items is not having to launder every 2 days. Clothes on rotation last longer. I do agree with finding your fashion style and buying when possible the best quality of garments made from natural fibres. Generally people will remember more often what a woman wears rather than a man. It is far easier for a man to have a 12 items wardrobe than a woman. Afterall a man can have 1 suit for evening and get away with 2 day suits, 3 shirts, 1 pair of jeans and 2 t-shirts and a sweater / jumper.
It's cultural conditioning that makes people expect women to wear a wider variety of clothes, so maybe it's time to change the culture! I wore the same dress to every wedding I attended for 20 years! I only got rid of it two years ago because it started to look worn, and it's been replaced with another dress that will be worn to all future occasions until that too starts to look tatty. Simple cuts and classic styles don't date. I've had a couple of people comment that I wear the same dress to all smart occasions, and my response is 'they are inviting me, not my clothing'.
@@pippas5808I have seen a number of blogs / TH-cam vids etc that say “people don’t notice what you wear”. I don’t think that’s true at all, as your comment shows. However, I love your attitude of not caring that people notice. I am getting far better at not caring what others think as I age. My wardrobe is far smaller than it used to be after trying Courtney Carver’s Project 333 and I regret nothing!
As a woman, I have one "formal dress" for weddings etc. I can wear the same dress for multiple weddings, why not? I mean that thing has been worn for funerals too. If the couple invited me, they invited me not my wardrobe ❤️

@@08Cruiser 👏🏾
I gave away 5 garbage bags of clothes. (I lost 60 lbs) It’s almost time to go back through again. I haven’t added much, but I know there’s a few things I no longer need.
Short, Sweet and to the point! ❤
Another tip for tracking what you wear to help minimize is flipping all of your hangers backwards and then turning them the right way once an item is worn. Makes it super easy to see what you don't wear over whatever given period of time you set.
👍🏻yes..worked for me!
Always enjoy your videos Joshua. Keeps me motivated to own less. Thank you!
That’s some hard work right there, good on you for all that effort and working towards your goals!
Totally agree with the comfort aspect! 🥳
I don’t think I bought any clothes in the last year. Oh wait I just (finally) replaced my shoes since they were falling apart on the inside haha.
That is the most elegant wrap up at the end of this video that I have ever heard. I think this way of talking to viewers is respectful and beautiful.
I hate clothes shopping also 😭
En fait, Joshua, you were the inspiration for me to replace my Ts with all black with my business and Whats on them! Thank you!
I wear a lot of black and it’s my style. I do choose quality over quantity. It has helped me so much. I always know I am at least presentable. Lol. Love love this Chanel and the great message Joshua provides us!thank you!!!
My daughters meet to hear this, I been telling them thy need to stay off of social media and buy only what they need and not to buy so many wants
Amen! Thank You! Very True!
Great information. I’m getting more into being a minimalist. Thank you!
Good advice!
Owning less and just more intentional is awesome!!!
Thank you! ❤
Thank you! Worthy
Agreed. I turned up the hem on a few trousers I own and I'm so happy 😁
Really like this video. Lots of great clear advice. Thank you. 😊
Great suggestions
Joshua boa noite.
I love your videos! I would appreciate videos in the 10-20 min. range so I can get work done while I listen.
Thanks
Thank you.🙂
Dear Joshua,
Thank you so much. This was very helpful and motivated me to go forward in letting go of the excess. :)
Thanks for the reminders.
And we appreciate your presence very much 😊
Please Add reference pictures...clips etc. that makes it easier to follow the videos and prevents them from getting repetitive .
So Good!🙌🏼🔥🔥🔥
I have had a capsule wardrobe for several years now.
Thank you, Joshua! 😁
I watch your videos and have learned alot. Thank you for your advice. What do you do if your spouse opposes to remove their clothing? The feeling of no accomplishment is present for me.
Should consider changing the title to “How to be an adult” because it's helping me a lot, lol.❤
Ha!
Thx Joshua. Always useful advices...
Love your encouragement! Thank you!!!!
thank you so much
Def needed this fr 👍🏾💯
Great advice
Thank you guruji.
Very good ideas ❤
Great video!
Always a good video and great advice
I have never spent much on clothing. I wear scrubs to work. I have a pair of black jeans, a pair of blue jeans, and a pair of black slacks. I have 3 t-shirts, a zip-up sweatshirt, 3 blouses, a cardigan, and one dress. I have one pair of sneakers, one pair of casual shoes, and one pair of low heels. That's it.
Minimalist wardrobe is not for everyone. Minimalism is great, but variety is nice to have. To each his/her own.
Very inspired, thanks a lot ❤
Just because it gets worn now and then isn't reason to keep it either if there're other items that will suffice.
Commenting just because you asked 😊
Thanks :)
Already pared down, but still not happy shopping, so my style gets more and more minimal.
My problem is that I decluttered everything I do not wear or like. But still I have more than I wish.. not sure what to do about it
Don't have to worry about my clothes lol I wear black like you and I have been wearing things from 5 to 6 years ago.. clothes are not a priority. I am presentable at work, but only buy here ans there to update. All good there. Just trying to sell my 80's stuff lol
Great
Normally I pay 50 to 100 € a year for clothing because I very rarely shop and mostly buy thrifted clothes. I constantly keep on decluttering my wardrobe. But it is not easy, cause there are a lot of items, that I wore on special occasions or moments, and even if they don't fit anymore or are not my style now, I want to keep them because of the memories.... What can I do?
Take a picture.
I shop only at a thrift store.
❤
