My husband passed away almost 3 years ago. I cleared out his clithes and other things that were easy to dispose of. He was a hoarder of note, keeping every little thing imaginable. Last year, I started renovating the house, a task that he managed to delay for almost 30 years. In thhe process i have recycled 3 big bags of paper, metal aerial conduits, kilometres of wires and everything else imaginable. All that remains are a few boxes in the garage which we are going through currently. In the process, I have a "new" home. I have also donated boxes of unused items from the kitchen cabinets, cups, glasses and pots etc. Theres one last sweep remaining, that is my closets to get rid of clothes not worn. All my children will have to decide what to do with is my craft stuff. The house feels so much lighter already.
My goal every day is to do one household task. Besides regular daily care, I scrubbed my bathroom floor extra well. My house is so easy to clean that I have to look for things to do! Lol
As someone with anxiety disorder, clutter absolutely exacerbates it. But oddly, so does a room thats to sparse. For me I have to have enough to feel cozy but not so much that I'm anxious.
Hi Joshua, I'm 67 yrs old and find clearing out 'stuff' clears my mind, it makes me calmer, too. I'm reading a book just now titled 'The gentle art of Swedish death cleaning. Basically, how to free yourself and your family from a lifetime of clutter, making things easier for your family when you're no longer here. Why would we want to leave things to our children to clear away our lifetime of possessions.
Thank you for your thoughtfulness in considering your loved ones. My husband and I had to clear out his parent’s house last year. Let’s just say it was quite the undertaking! I’m sure it never crossed their minds that 60 years worth of living in one place would generate so many belongings! We loved them and tried our best to handle each item with care. Most of it was donated. The experience motivates my family to really consider our possessions differently. We’re trying to decluttering and minimize our home. And yes, like you, I feel calmer and more peaceful in my house.
Good for you! I had a friend who recently had to deal with moving her mom into assisted living and it was such an ordeal for them both, as the mom has health issues and the daughter does as well. And her mom still wouldn't part with lots of stuff, so it will need to be re-done when she passes away. :(
If you do have things that are important to you and have a story behind them, leave that note attached to the item so it means more to family and friends.
Thank you!! I started decluttering last week for the first time properly. It feels like I have just woken up to what this all really means now and I am eternally grateful. The more I do, and remember what you say keeps me going and motivated. Genuinely beginning to feel more calm and in control❤❤
I encourage my (aging) friends to simply their lives doing exactly what you have laid out here. It’s so important for healthy aging to lessen the environmental stress in order to mitigate helplessness as we age as it becomes increasingly impossible to take care of stuff.
Although it’s forced minimalism for me, I’m thoroughly enjoying the simplicity accompanying it. Proper sleep and good nutrition are excellent baselines. Small changes bring huge difference with time.
I’ve been pretty minimal for a decade or so , since moving several times in a short time, it feels like 90% of whatever I’ve bought in my life was stuff I didn’t need , a waste of money, time and resources, I don’t make that mistake any more
Slowing my life down where multiple tasks at one time with a busy household WAS the norm has been so healthy for me, literally with lower blood pressure. Totally agree with all this advice.
I like the “single-tasking” idea u mentioned! I always thought multi tasking was more productive. I’ve heard this concept before ( but not heard the phrase as u put it, single-tasking. Brilliant! I wasn’t convinced until I tried it. Focusing on one task @ a time has made me more efficient and better @ what I’m doing. Thanx for including this bit of wisdom!
When I was young I was told that most of spend the first half of our lives collecting things and then as we start our second half cleaning away the stuff and only keeping what we really need... so true I have found.. living with less is so stress free and happy.
The hair,😂 but seriously it’s these videos- much appreciated!❤️👍 several of these I already use and love. I simplified our diet along with a really deep declutter of my kitchen after your video “The crucial decluttering question you’re not asking” in which you brought up a Mark Bitman‘s article titled “A no frills kitchen still cooks”. I watched a video about the same time from Dawn The Minimal Mom, in which she was talking about reducing inventory of food items along with cooking the same meals on repeat. I already did a weekly meal plan using the same old favourites anyways. I picked 20 easy favourites, created a 4 week loop with a grocery list per week and a simple list of ingredients I need on hand and it’s all on repeat. I pick 5 veggie sides each week. I grocery shop online, pickup once a week at the store. It’s SO MUCH EASIER. If I want to get creative I can swap in a new recipe or I just carry on with the loop. 5 meals for 7 days allows for leftovers and meals out. Like a capsule wardrobe. Which I also do.
Hi Joshua, I have been decluttering for a long time. I had to stop and think about things as I went but now it has resulted in a calm house. My husband started with his things and now our grandchildren have told me they love coming to our house because it is calm, so win 😊
Bravo. Well done. It is wonderful to experience when your steps is noticed by our surroundings - especially when we inspire, touch and motivate our loved ones ❤
Thank you Joshua. I love your videos and your philosophy on simplicity. My husband has dementia and removing stuff and keeping to a simple routine is better for him and reduces my stress level.😊
One thing at a time is HUGE. I also try to push everything else except for that one current thing out of my mind. Having too much weighing on you mentally while you’re trying to get focused can slow and weigh you down a lot also. I have to tell myself all the time “we are only doing this one thing right now. And we are going to do it well. Forget the rest until it’s time to do the next thing.” It always goes better when I can win those mental battles and it greatly reduces all that overwhelm I used to be so plagued with. Esp having female wiring where you tend to have all these boxes opened in your mind all at one time. In this case, developing a one track mind (like most men seem to more naturally have-one box at a time open only) can be of huge benefit. And Bcuz it’s hard to focus and do well and be efficient on a task if your mind is bogged down with worrying about all the next things on the queue that you know need to get done.
I’ve been doing a major decluttering since 2019 . It’s just taken a long time because I am the only one in the family that does it . Also no one else cares to declutter . I think I was somewhat of a maximalist , but a neat one . Now I’m 56 almost 57 , and a grandmother , I can’t not stand to see even a little mess in our home . I’ve completely flipped the switch . It hurts my head to see even a small mess around . I am now really ocd . I have been diagnosed with ocd .
I have been following Joshua for a while, these videos have massively contributed in changing my life for the better. My whole family knows of you and I quite you often in decision making! You've helped me learn that letting things go can feel so free!! Thank you Joshua Becker
I always eat oatmeal with fruit. Hot in the winter. Cold muesli in the summer. Both always include fruit. That is my week morning breakfast. On Saturdays I may skip breakfast for brunch with something more labor intensive, like a chickpea frittata.
I am decluttering and simplifying my life. This stuff came in by the armload and handful, and it's going out by the boxful and trash bagful. I wrote down these 8 things in my "goals" notebook. Love the encouragement and direction. (But losing that strawberry donut though.....)
Simplified diet: I found when I stopped eating highly processed foods, my diet got much simpler. Whole foods that are cost effective for every day and that I like, there are only so many. The thing is, I never get tired of giving my body really good fuel every day.
I absolutely agree with what you are saying and have been doing most of you suggestions. 2020 and lockdown was my turning point. Thankyou so much for caring for us all and showing us the way ahead. Many thanks ftom England!
Totally agree … every moment should be done with intention has worked well .. just thinking before anything. … leads to a common sense decision for me anyway … but always appreciate your affirmations 💚
Lolol the hair! No for real….it’s not. If you were bald we’d still listen because what you have to say is adding so much value to our lives. Thank you.
Our brans prefers to do ONE thing at the time...in fact some scientists say, that there is not such thing called "multitasking" - we just believe we are productive when we walk the dog and answers emails at the same time: but we are missing out on both tasks. Breathe. Focus. Enjoy.❤
Dear Joshua, thank you super very much. Your words are never redundant. I just need you to tell me again and again how important decluttering is. Sitting on my balcony in Northern Italy listening to the birds and your words.
Thank you Joshua for the important message of Simple Living you are spreading, as always! Great video, we can all truly benefit from these and it is so helpful to me right now, as we try to further simplify our life. All the best. God Bless xxx
Joshua, do you have a video regarding how to get started on decluttering over the age of 65? I have just recently found you on TH-cam and really enjoy listening to your advice. Emotional attachment to things at that age can be difficult. I am a believer in Christ and would appreciate your thoughts on this subject.
What Joshua has in his TH-cam videos and books applies to people of every age. Just start and keep going. Catherine from the Life Tidy addresses people over 50 specifically and the Swedish Art of Death Cleaning book is also a very good and quick read. You are going to love the results!
Thanks to you Joshua, keeping things simple has risen from the excluded debris of clutter in our lives. I do like the idea of applying simplicity to a healthy diet, so will give that a try. Thank you for another inspiring video.
As seniors we find there's not that much in the world that excites us anymore. We unplug our phone and turn it off at night. It stays in another bedroom in another part of the house until the next morning. When we get up 5:00 am, make our bed, make our coffee, read our Bible, go to the gym and THEN we look at our phone, it's so freeing.
RADISH I love festool and dreaming of having a workshop full of the brand! But big thanks for this video!! A wonderful reality check for me as I was down a rabbit hole researching about all new tools that I don’t really need.

Declutter has really reduced my anxiety. So I get you!
I agree with you about simplified diet. I think about an old adage, garbage in, garbage out. Eating badly just make me feel bad physically.
