My 20 piece capsule wardrobe was the best thing I've done for myself. Every piece goes together, they all look put together, and totally makes my days better. I will never go back to a closet full of clothes, and nothing to wear!
Back in the 80's Steve Jobs asked me 'did you attend a private school?' because I wore the same outfit every day, as did he. Yes, I attended a boarding school and got hooked on wearing the same colour, style, dress everyday. Am 76 and still do. Six dresses all the same style, colour.
@@Jennifer-bs6oy exactly! And for those of us who don't have an in home washer, are you buying 7 black tops for the week, or beating your clothes on a rock? It's not often easy to drive to a laundromat. Are ya telling me these clothes never smell? 🤔 happy medium would be to reduce, not wear a uniform. But to each his own.
Add to your list: more bad taste, less sexy, more low value men and women, more ugly people, more laziness, more unexciting world (imagine everyone is wearing Uniqlo non-ironed) with cheap fabrics!
A colleague of mine wore the same outfit everyday of his teaching career: a black t-shirt and jeans. At the time, I did not have a good understanding of what this might have meant for him. You have explained very well all the advantages of this approach to getting dressed in the morning. On the day of his retirement after many years of teaching, staff and students wore a black t-shirt and jeans to celebrate his amazing contribution to his school. It was a fitting tribute to someone who was wise in so many ways and who passed on his teachings (as you are doing!). Thank you for another great video!
I had a professor in college years ago who always wore a white button down cotton type shirt, black pants, and black shoes. Everyday for that entire semester and every time I saw him afterward on campus, same outfit. I didn’t understand it back then, but as someone in a high stress job now, picking an outfit is the last thing I want to think about!
When I started the video, I thought “if you are someone like Steve Jobs, decision fatigue is valid. For anyone else, if deciding what to wear each day fatigues you, I have questions.” Less than nine minutes later, I realize I am only wearing a fraction of my wardrobe regularly and am reminded of my constant desire to simplify my life and possessions in other areas. Thank you for the thought provoking video.
Every time I watch one of your videos I feel a sense of peace and happiness. I love my minimalist life. Never once have I doubted this journey. Thank you, Joshua.
When I realized a capsule wardrobe doesn’t require all neutrals and solids, I was in. A few vintage colorful Talbots skirts, some simple solid tops, a few sweaters and pants that fit - I’m practically unstoppable. 😏
Yes, a capsule wardrobe/style uniform is a good way to get a bit more diversity and freedom in your look, but still give similar benefits. :) I like to go for basics that go together, and then I play a lot with accessories. This can give the same outfit some very different vibes, and can give a surprising amount of variation.
I am peeling down my closet slowly but surely, and trying to replace with high quality neutrals that all go together. Feels like a worthwhile journey, and love being able to turn off the massive clothing advertising machine. Thanks as always for your wise words Joshua.
When I went into nursing.....the less stress over "what to wear" was tremendous. My uniforms are all one color now. I grab and go. ..........previously I was a secretary. I had no idea how stressful it was coordinating outfits, shoes, jewelry, etc. etc. My nursing uniforms have been a life changer. I get this concept. I cannot imagine working again in the mainstream and having to "dress" for the part. Would be incredibly stressful.
I started doing this sort of by accident ten years ago. I found a plain black shirt that fit well and was made well, then I eventually found that it was my favorite shirt- I would put it on first after every time I did laundry. So I managed to order 80 of them at wholesale pricing from a guy I knew with a printing company. For the past ten years I’ve been wearing this plain black shirt 95% of the time.
I used to work in theater, both on stage and off. A wardrobe of 80% black separates that packed and laundered easily was a given. Besides, black and dark denim hide a lot of stains and abuse. A handful of "wow" pieces or statement accessories for special occasions or performances could transform an outfit in mere seconds. Hint: most people don't notice much about what you wear as long as it's clean, mended, fits you properly and suits the occasion. Today, I work in an upscale business-casual environment, and picked a "uniform" in a limited color palette with an emphasis on dark neutrals that suits my body type, coloring, and typical daily activities, but provides the same versatility to go from "grubby" work to "special occasion" by changing just one piece or adding an accessory. And always, always, always an investment pair of shoes that I would be comfortable wearing for a full-day urban trek but still look smart enough to wear to a special occasion. This wardrobe has served me well for several years on multiple trips and long-term work assignments in varied climates and annual seasons in several countries. My clothing shopping today consists of replacing my tried-and-true pieces when they wear out, or the occasional upgrading of a piece to one that offers more versatility or higher-quality fabric/construction.
After 10 years in the military I appreciated the advantages to having a uniform appearance. It just made my life simpler. Thus, for the next 3 decades I wore khakis, a white or blue button-up shirt, paisley tie, and blue blazer each day to court. Now, in retirement, I pretty much wear the same shirt and shorts daily as well.
I’m not down to 33 but I am way down from where I was and continuing to pare down as I am inspired by people like you and this sound logic. Thank you for he continued encouragement!
I’ve swapped my summer clothes for winter clothes (from the UK) and the minimalistic journey has taught me to get them ready the day before and hang them back up if they are not dirty. If I haven’t worn them at the end of winter off to the charity shop they go. I started minimalistic journey on the 1st of January this year with the Xmas tree and decorations … I intend to be done by the 1st of January 2023. It’s been a cathartic journey but certainly worth the effort x
I did larger capsule wardrobes seasonally for years but I finally tried doing project 333 about 2 years ago. I was able to downsize my year round clothes by 2/3. The remaining 1/3 are ones I love and make me feel great. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and my smaller 33 item capsule really helps me. Less items, less laundry, more living. Currently I’m using 16 clothing items and the rest are my shoes, 1 purse, 1 coat some scarves and jewelry.
I don't wear the same thing every day but I have a daily uniform. I wear the same thing every Monday, same thing every Tuesday, etc. It makes it so easy to know what to wear and if something is worn out I don't have to worry about replacing it with something that's the same as my other clothes. I have a storage tower and when my laundry comes out of the dryer I put the clothes directly into it's assigned day. Then in the morning I just grab from that drawer. I'm currently working on doing the same for my daughter.
Now this I like because I love clothes. But I see the wisdom in the capsule wardrobe. I started wearing scrubs during the pandemic and can resort to that anytime
I love this, I've had a capsule wardrobe for a while now and it's amazingly liberating. I own 4 pairs of jeans, 5 t-shirts and 2 dresses. I wear jeans and a tee every single day (I work from home) and my 2 dresses are for if I have something special to go to. Makes life so much easier.
I am in high school and having a smaller closet has helped me so much! I wear the same thing everyday and I am confident in it because I love the clothes I am wearing. I wear a tank with a hoodie and jeans. I put clips in my hot and earrings too to make it pop!
Josh, based on your earlier video about cutting your wardrobe way down I did the same earlier this year. I live in southern central coastal California so the weather is on the warmer side. I cut out approximately half my wardrobe and placed it in the guest room closet. From there I cut it in half again; one half went to the thrift store, the other half is still there and will likely go to the same thrift store soon. I looked at the way you dressed and decided that was good. So I ended up looking for tee shirt dresses--something I can wear to work at the college--and found these black cotton ones for $20 each at Target. I bought ten. And over the past six or eight months that is all I have worn with a single pair of black shoes. I simplified my hair; while I now have white hair I am letting it grow long and keeping it pulled back with a single white silk band. Make-up disappeared during Covid so getting dressed in the morning means no decisions whatsoever. And I like it! It takes about three minutes with no decisions. For the winter we are heading into I will add a couple pairs of black leggings and maybe three pairs of jeans plus some black tee shirts like yours. I am never bored with what I wear. And I love the freedom of no additional expense and most of all, no decisions because there are none. It is what it is. I almost feel sorry for those who dress differently every day.
Love your comment used to buy t-shirt dresses at k'mart $10 and self taught sewer alter them. (Shorten spit up each side or off center middle or middle back) gonna check target thanks
I’m moving in this direction, however I live in the Midwest where the weather can change 30 degrees in the same day. I’m selling a lot of items and working towards losing 20-30lbs so I can start my capsule wardrobe.
My wardrobe color palette has always been black, navy blue and gray from tops to jeans to shoes , even accessories - and I have never felt more confident in my fashion style! I no longer have the desire to keep up with trends because I know I would look good and in a classy way. Best parts are: I got to save money as well as always make a statement in the workplace. This is my favorite video on your channel, by far! Thank you very much! Support from the Philippines!
I can’t agree more. Thank you Joshua for reiterating the value that a capsule wardrobe brings. Invest in good quality pieces and start building an iconic wardrobe..🙌🏻
I have sensory issues and hate wearing long sleeves or anything too low-cut. Yet I spend hundreds on fashionable fast fashion clothes my fantasy self would wear and never wore them because I wasn't comfortable in them. When I realized I am happy with my black T-shirts and don't need any other kind of tops, it was really freeing.
Good for u. I gave 2 beautiful pair high heel shoes away n costume jewellery. I don't wear dresses much n now wear orthotics. My fantasy self also thinks I'm going to do crafts, sew etc. Etc. 😔
Once I moved from Hawaii to the mainland, I bought a minimalist wardrobe consisting of mainly black clothes with a few pops of color. I love the way I look and it gives me one less thing to worry about.
I've been working on the capsule wardrobe the past couple of years. As a clothes-horse, it's been hard! But what's been helping is that I have a color palette I choose when shopping and ONLY purchase things that I know will coordinate with what I already have. Coupled with eliminating clothes that don't work within this scheme, it's been trimmed and coming along nicely. Less clothes and faster getting dressed in the mornings and happy with how I look!
Grew up with wearing a uniform so having ready to go outfits for adulthood made sense. My problem is currently, while I've always had this mentality and approach to my wardrobe, my waist size has fluctuated over the past three years after covid and I don't fit into my old wardrobe. I've had to get some new pieces to wear w the stretched items that still fit. I'm not happy at all and working at the gym with snails pace results to improve my self image. I've never felt so self conscious about my look. Not ready to streamline yet. Want the old me back first. #frustrated
I wear exercise clothes or ... Whatever is lined up next in the closet that is weather appropriate. Eating? Well, I feel best with beef, coffee, water and butter. Talk about streamlined. At old job, I definitely wore same outfit. Had set number of tops and bottoms for days of the week and that's all I wore for two yrs. Loved it.
Once I decluttered I get ready so much faster . I only buy once I need something. I can afford more but I love this style of living since 6 years . I slowly have less and less
This is the first time I have come across this lifestyle. I am very pleased that someone else has come to the same conclusion I have come to. I would call it wisdom.
I am surprised that the reason to not draw attention to oneself wasn't mentioned. For several years now, I have chosen to wear the same dress to my church services, so that I do not distract from the messages and draw attention to myself. Obviously, it makes getting dressed easy, but I am hopeful that by doing so, I am not thinking too much about what I am wearing, but rather being more attentive and sensitive to the needs of others around me. We still have people without adequate clothing in society. It breaks my heart, especially given the fact the some people are obsessed with wearing designer pieces, and designers are still obsessed with making their clothing for certain people in society, so much that designers will burn heaps of clothing at the end of a cycle so no one can have their clothing but the elite. On the other end of that, we still are mass producing clothing for Walmart, Old Navy, Target and more. One has to eventually ask themselves, who or what child is making these clothes!? We need to be more thoughtful consumers for eachother, not just ourselves. .
Seems like that would actually attract attention. (e.g., "psst, did yo see sister N, she's still wearing that same old dress", etc). You remind me of the buddhist disciple who said "i am the most humble of all"
@@sustainablelife1st How is it any different than a man wearing the same suit every week? It's not like I am dressing down for church, it is my "Sunday best", jewelry included. I am not trying to be the "most humble" looking of all, I'm just keeping it simple. When my dress starts to wear out, I replace it.
Your comment about designers burning clothes really made me think. I do not want to be a part of that cycle. I am going to look at how I can repeat things/create a uniform, and replace only when things wear out like you said
@@HistorianMom sAme here. I love colors and a little of variety but did not hurt me when I wore my gray-colored tee once a week. I also love simple clothes and not the flambouyant styles we see at the malls. I stick to simple cut and style. My uniform is jeans and a tee for work and almost every day. Dress for church sometimes or jeans with feminine tops
I have not quite gotten there yet but I'm currently working towards the end portion of my nurse practitioner journey and I have found less fuss and time with simply wearing the same thing on my practicum days (nobody notices with a lab coat on snyway). Such a strict dress code so this is the perfect area to start to work towards this. My mornings go by smoothly and I always know I am wearing the approved attire without thinking. Fast fashion is a big waste of time, money, and energy.
Decision fatigue. I felt that one. I just retired from a position that I enjoyed, but the massive amounts of decisions that had to be made minute by minute was very taxing and exacerbated by constant interruptions.
Bravo 👏🏻 I’ve been doing the capsule wardrobe about 7-8 years, I’ll never go back. It’s changed over the years from being a stay at home mom to now an empty nester in the workforce again, but it’s so freeing and fun! I love switching everything out 4 times a year with the seasons instead of a closet full of things that don’t work with my real life.
I've been doing this too for a few years for my non-work clothes. Curious, do you keep your off-season clothes in a separate closet? I find it drives me crazy if I don't.... my last home, I didn't have this luxury, but now I do and love it! I created uniform(s) for work, but I like playing with clothing choices in my free-time.
@@ChrissyChrissyChrissy333 I have 3 large totes that I stack In my closet top shelf. I limit myself to the hanging current season and those totes. If it doesn’t fit in there, it goes. The exception would be coats (they stay in hall coat closet year round), then I have a chest of drawers in my closet for pjs, under garments, exercise and lounge wear.
@@JenniferVanMatreMissouriUSA Okay, I like that organization method. Yeah I find decision fatigue is eliminated when the out of season options are completely out of view. The bins are a great idea for that, thank you!
I am close to reorganize my wardrobe. It was a good clip to inspire my way of daily wearing to reconsider. After nearly 15 years collecting clothes, not to missunderstand I am not a big buyer of clothes, but the body is changing, too. To understand the loving clothes are just not fit anymore or as Mrs. Barrymore: What was good with the 20, could not be for the 40 anymore. Thanks for sharing and a way to make perhabs a change!
I love all things creative and felt having a smaller wardrobe would feel restricted…I was wrong. I am 2/3 of the way rebuilding my capsule wardrobe which is based on the colors I love & some prints but they all coordinate. It’s been fun getting it all to work. I took of photo of my hanging clothes and I use it to help me select new items. Today I need at least one scarf so I will pull up my photo and make sure I purchase something that coordinates with all of the current colors I own. Black, tan, white, blue are my usual basic colors. ❤ It’s quite a relief not feeling stressed about what to wear. I also refer to Pinterest to help me coordinate the items I do own and I feel like I have new outfits when I restyle & coordinate pieces I’ve never worn together. It’s fun 😊
I've switched our whole household to a neutral capsule wardrobe. Everything we wear is either black, gray, denim, khaki/tan, and olive green. It has been life changing! First of all, laundry is a cinch. No sorting (and I know that some people have all colors and don't sort but that would drive me crazy). Secondly, it is much easier on the eyes. Less overstimulating and everything and everyone matches. Third, it reduces decision fatigue. Not just at home getting dressed, but when shopping for new clothes especially for my boys. I can quickly scan the racks and find what I need by sticking to our color scheme. My boys are on board too because it makes it easier for them. They were just as decision fatigued and overstimulated as I was. I am in the process of "neutralizing" stress throughout the house with the same concept (bedding, toys, dishes, etc.). :)
I realized this when my job (I’m a nurse and wear scrubs) adopted a policy of only black or white scrubs for nurses. At first I was mad as I’m a pediatric nurse and had all sorts of cute and colorful scrubs. I quickly realized however, that it was much easier to pick what to wear. Now I have edited my normal wardrobe similarly. I don’t much care for black in my personal life so it’s simply jeans and neutral beige/brown tones. Small wardrobe and all goes together.
So good Joshua. These might be your best thoughts I have heard but then again I think most of your info and thoughts are truly thought through and spoken with clarity, first hand and first rate knowledge. Thank you for sharing your God given gifts to me.
Great reasons from great people. I love my minimalist wardrobe! It saves me so much time when I have to go somewhere. After years of wearing black tops I’m not sure it really is “slimming” though 😂
I will be hybrid working so NO need for all my office clothing. I have sooo much clothes and NO space. I have different clothes for different occasions. The lounge clothes, the church dresses, the casual weekend wear, the date nights and club wear and of course gym clothes. I needed this video ❤❤
Craving continuity is a good point. Like a favorite meal, I could see how seeing someone wearing the same thing or similar things could create that feeling.
I love hearing about peoples’ uniforms or outfit formulas. I too live in a four seasons unpredictable area. So I adapt to the season and the activity. Formula dressing for the activity adds variety but limits the choices.
I discovered that I am comfortable wearing white shirts and black soft pants, and soo I decided to change all my go out clothes to that things. And everytime I go out, it's so much easy because no need to choose what color to wear...
I'm a size people grow out of. I buy no clothing. I keep more classic practical items. Lots of clothes, BUT wear 3-4 pair of shorts and about 6 tops during the summer. Similar each season. Something gets stained, torn or worn out, I throw it out and have one less item for that season. I'm working at wearing several items out each season. Dress clothing is all classic. I don't use a dryer, clothing tends to last longer. Having a system is key for each person.
My job requires a uniform ( and I am happy to wear it! ), so I don’t have to be bothered to what to wear 🙂but during my days off I like to change outfit, according to my state of mind( and weather 😅)😊 as a minimalist, I don’t have many clothes, especially not many accessories but stil enjoy shopping in my closet and create new outfits with what’s in there 🤓
I've worn the same things for the last 50+ years - solid neutral Tops and Jeans or black Dress Slacks as the occasion warrants. Since my weight has remained the same all my adult life - I could still wear the clothes I had in the '70s today. In the '70s and '80s i also sewed - and wore - beautiful Dresses for more formal events, but I don't need them anymore. I buy the best quality (not most expensive) natural fabrics I can find, and take care of them. My Wardrobe is small. Ive never needed my clothes to make a 'Starement' - they're deliberately simple and modest. Works for me. PS - I haven't owned an Iron/Board in decades.
This has been a long process for me... I've figured out my fav "uniform" is a dress... its a top and bottom sewn together... I don't have to coordinate outfits... plus a dress costs as much as either a separate top or bottom. On a recent trip I was super careful to bring the bare minimum... and even those things were too much... making me rethink and pair down more.
I do this for the little~orphan~girl I am raising. She wears the same form of clothing to school each day (not a uniform) but in varying prints/colors. I chose the clothing that looks the best on her and feels most comfortable. This absolutely streamlines all the processes of clothing, wearing, washing, storing, dressing. We Love IT ! ! ! I have not done it for myself yet but have wanted to do so for a long long time❣️
33 articles of clothing for months? I've got that beat hands down because I wear 1 of 3 grey t-shirts everyday and have 1 pair of daily jeans and 1 pair of decent jeans for dress-up. I don't know if it's as much of a capsule collection as much as I stopped caring.
I already have pared down my clothing to only those items that really work for me. I just completed my change of season task in my closet, resulting in pulling several pieces of summer clothing that I did not wear this year. They will not be replaced. My closet and my daily dressing regimen become happier with every year that passes.
I find your videos so calming as well as educational. I seem to be able to think straight and clearer after watching you. Thankyou. Also I love seeing you in your iconic v neck t shirt 😊. I would feel all discombobulated if you appeared in some bright coloured shirt or something xxx
It's interesting that my TH-cam algorithm led me to this channel after watching an old George Carlin video on American Consumerism yesterday. I'm certainly not a minimalist by anybody's definition, but you've given me food for thought. As a nurse, I basically live in scrubs, but your logic can be applied in many areas of life worth consideration. Thank You!
I have unconsciously been using a minimalist wardrobe for the past ten years: black knit pants and knit shirts in solid colors. Shoes are either black sneakers, black sandals or black boots. Tops are both short and long sleeved. I keep a couple of sweaters and winter coats. This summer I changed things up a bit and bought four identical maxi dresses in completely different colors/patterns. It was a refreshing change but still super minimal. My sneakers and sandals worked with the dresses. For church, I have three different skirts with four blouses that coordinate with them and three lightweight sweaters that coordinate with the outfits. I highly recommend finding a simple style that is comfortable for daily activities and looks nice and presentable always.
Wow! Sounds like me! I have 2 capris with 5 shirts for everyday and a black pants, gray pants with 5 blouses for Sundays church time! Only one pair of black shoes. And 2 fall sweaters. Thinking about adding a plain maxi dress to change out with belt or scarf. Easy, peasy! Now to cut down the jewelry!
@@NLY1WAY4U We think the same way! I had never heard of minimalism when I started paring down my wardrobe. I just needed something simple, comfy and easy that I could wear around the house and look nice when I needed to be out and about. It’s worked for ten years! Definitely add a maxi dress. They are so comfy and easy to wear and people always compliment me. :)
After watching this great video, I did some thinking about my wardrobe. I wrote everything down I “needed” and very nicely and organized into categories and sub-categories 😅. I didn’t double count. T-shirts for example counted for 2 different categories. I counted per category and then overall. To be fair I counted shoes, outerwear and undergarments. My total was astounding! I counted 66 separate items! What was astounding was that I was paring down! And even more astounding was that I’d already Decluttered a massive amount of clothes a couple weeks ago. 😳 what’s in my closet?? I obviously need to rethink what I actually need! 😂
As you speak I think of Martha Stewart-iconic & quality, of course Steve Jobs. But I live & work with many people who I realize also do this, my Friend Eric who wore a white dress shirt & black slacks every day. My husband was in the military. He said one of the most frustrating things he had to deal with after retiring was choosing what to wear everyday.
I have some other colors but I really narrowed things down my go-to outfit almost every day has been a black T-shirt and a pair of shorts or a pair of jeans. I have like about 10 of them so I always have plenty clean in the closet. When I worked corporate USA I used to be so stressed about what to wear everyday because everybody scrutinized what you had on.
A decade in the military and a decade later I’m back to a work uniform after getting tired of shopping. My work uniform is 3 black polos and 3 black pants, all lululemon. One pair of all white adidas shell tops and black shell tops. One black belt. I LOVE not having to think about anything clothing related anymore and I always look polished.
Hi Joshua, because I like your content so much I couldn' resist watching this morning - although I didn't want to watch an ad like you announced. But someone wrote how one can be able to skip them. So I was prepared to try this, but I was surprised: There was no ad😊 Maybe it is different here in Germany? Just wanted to give a Feedback about this. And truly like your message- I' m working on having less clothes for 2 years. For me as a woman it is a bit difficult, but I like the concept and adopted it in my way. Just wearing White, blue and light pink. Never black, because I had too much sad times where I wore black for longer periods. Now I want to wear light and happy colours😊
I did not see any ads when I watched this session. I did nothing to make a change in viewing preferences. also, in 2008 I was told about the one in one out principal (and shuddered). after watching minimalism videos, organizing and decluttering YT messages i look forward to your messages for they are so very helpful. thank you for them. also for understanding and sharing the rationale.
Great idea.. however.. seasonal change requires appropriate clothes for the weather. Here in Florida you need lightweight light colors for the hot summers. Long sleeves and sweaters for the chili fall days. And on the real cold days you need a windbreaker jacket. I have adjusted to seasonal.
This can be true for sure for some of us with huge season changes but not an excuse for excess or not pairing down. I'm in Colorado and we go from 105 to 8 in a year. You can still have a 'seasonal' capsule wardrobe. Two seasons truly is all you need.
I have a "uniform" for working on the farm. Khaki pants with old tie dye shirt. For leaving the farm, I wear jeans and a newer tie dye shirt. As the new tie dyes age out, they get downgraded to work shirts. And my wife is always eager to make new tie dye shirts. :) Its what she does.
Wow I thought I was weird 😂😂 I have always kept my clothing to a minimum since i moved out at 18 10 pairs of socks all the same 10 pairs of underwear different styles of corse but ones I liked 5 pairs of pants different styles they had to really catch my eye and taste 7 shirts different styles fit comfortable and made me happy to wear and reflect my personality!!! 1 swim trunks 1gym shorts 1 nice shorts 2 long sleeves 2 hoodies 2 gym pants red and black 1 good jacket 1 pair of boots for hiking 1 pair of running shoes for comfort 1pair of high top vans my fav 1 pair of sandals with good straps for them hot summer days your good to go simple is key Along with purpose people I know take forever to get ready me it’s like 4 min🤦🏼😂😂there like you wearing that im like shure am !!! let’s roll😎 hood video loved it
95% of my clothes are black, with a few navy, charcoal, and very little other colors thrown in, just so I can say "Not EVERYTHING I own is black", and I love it. Everything goes with everything, I always looks well put together, and I never have to spend too much time figuring out an outfit.
I have only black jeans ... No other color. And I buy packages of Rit dye to recolor my jeans when they start to fade. I've been wearing the same black jeans for years, re dyed several times, they always look good.
I love the idea but one of my rules is never start a wash until the washing machine is reasonably full (because of water and power). It would be great to have a balance between our wardrobe and our washing schedule!
I wear the same suit every day to work. Exact same cut and shirts and ties and underwear and shoes. I have lots of colours and patterns that give me a 2-3 week rotation. But still the SAME suit. Ditto casual clothes. All Eddie Bauer first ascent guide pro in every colour. Brundlefly…
I have decided on a no clothes buy this year. Don't wear the same thing all the time but I could probably get by for 20 years with what I have just now.
As a teacher, I was faced with thousands of decisions a day and yep, the capsule wardrobe was a great idea. Once I began wearing orthotic inserts , my budget went to a pair of high-quality comfortable shoes that I could stand in all day and use the inserts. Those were not dainty shoes that looked nice with dresses, so I stayed with black slacks to match the shoe color and a few colorful tops. What a relief!
My uniform is a band t-shirt, comfy trousers, plaid shirt and trainers. LL Bean boots and a rain coat in bad weather. That’s it. Maybe shorts and a cap in summer. I threw out all my dresses, skirts and annoying fashion blouses. I’m much happier now.
Color is lively, happy and fun. I'm always amused by it. Not sure if I can let go of ruffles, puffy sleeves, and pistachio green🤗 interesting video, I admire those with few classic pieces in a similar color family.
I understand the principal, but there are many Beyoncés and Serenas for every Steve Jobs….the point is to simplify in areas that matter less to you. I’m so over the black T-shirt minimalist cliche.
This is all well and good in the work environment - and for your "working wardrobe". I am fortunate enough to have a home in England and in Spain - so straight away 2 completely different environments. Then you have the "going out" outfit, the "working in the garden/campo" outfit, the "walking the dog" outfit, etc. Multiple these by the seasons - certainly in Spain, this ranges from below freezing to over 40 degrees C - and the country and I fail to see how I can boil this down to "the same thing every day"... Is it just me? Joshua, maybe you could give me some guidance here? Thanks
I have lived in navy nursing scrubs for decades. I like to have fun with my clothes. But it is easy to get ready for work when I know what I am going to wear
I just got a new dress and my son challenged me to wear it for 9 days straight. I did, washing and ironing it 3 times. It isn't a beautiful dress, but it is well made and versatile. I got a lot of compliments. I didn't want to have to wear it another day, but I also didn't want to pick out a different outfit on day 10. I learned a lot about myself, but I still don't know what my every day outfit is. I have read a couple of books and I am making progress. The idea that someone chose versatile easy things they love to wear is a lot higher bar than I thought when I set out to pursue this a couple years ago.
Variety is the spice of life! A uniform is great! I do agree. I am a painter I have my grungy work clothes. Because I haven't been poor, unable to make hardly want decisions and had only a few clothes 40 years ago. I can now as a senior citizen who looks beautiful by my standards why would I want to look the same every. Single .day? I don't spend much on clothes though. I take good care of what I get and have. If they don't look right on me... they're gone!
I love that!
Yet how many complain that a uniform restricts freedom of choice.
That's a great idea.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Did you ask Jobs, why je was just a disgrace?
1. Less time wasted
2. Less stress
3. Fewer decisions
4. Less wasted energy
5. Feeling put together
6. Iconic
7. Less expense
8. More peace
Thank you 😊 💓
Im all for it. I just wonder how long it will take until I get the first question, didn't you wear that yesterday?
@@Jennifer-bs6oy exactly! And for those of us who don't have an in home washer, are you buying 7 black tops for the week, or beating your clothes on a rock? It's not often easy to drive to a laundromat. Are ya telling me these clothes never smell? 🤔 happy medium would be to reduce, not wear a uniform. But to each his own.
Add to your list: more bad taste, less sexy, more low value men and women, more ugly people, more laziness, more unexciting world (imagine everyone is wearing Uniqlo non-ironed) with cheap fabrics!
I love my very minimal wardrobe. One less thing to deal with every morning and I’m comfortable at all times!
Lovely story:)
Yes. TY
For anyone else, if deciding what to wear each day fatigues you, I have questions.”
Less than nine minutes later, I realize I am only wearing a fraction of my wardrobe regularly and am reminded of my constant desire to simplify my life and possessions in other areas.
Practically unstoppable.😂 I love it!👏🏾
Yes, a capsule wardrobe/style uniform is a good way to get a bit more diversity and freedom in your look, but still give similar benefits.
I have so many empty hangers now
@Ron and Patti Telfer find some cheap shoes only last 6 months before soles go soft.. By quality research before buying
Would be incredibly stressful.
lol!!
I love the idea, there is more to life than worrying about what to wear everyday
How true
More time for video games
I started doing this sort of by accident ten years ago. I found a plain black shirt that fit well and was made well, then I eventually found that it was my favorite shirt- I would put it on first after every time I did laundry. So I managed to order 80 of them at wholesale pricing from a guy I knew with a printing company. For the past ten years I’ve been wearing this plain black shirt 95% of the time.
Having a smaller wardrobe has been a huge blessing for me! Thank you for encouraging all of us!!
I totally agree!
I switched to a capsule wardrobe for my work. Wow, what a game changer. It makes the process so much easier 😊
A great idea. I could switch the days around and also replace items as they wear out. I just can't seem to get rid of clothes.
Now this I like because I love clothes. But I see the wisdom in the capsule wardrobe. I started wearing scrubs during the pandemic and can resort to that anytime
This is a great idea.
That is good
I love this, I've had a capsule wardrobe for a while now and it's amazingly liberating. I own 4 pairs of jeans, 5 t-shirts and 2 dresses. I wear jeans and a tee every single day (I work from home) and my 2 dresses are for if I have something special to go to. Makes life so much easier.
Also, time saved shopping at the clothing store. Just grab 5 of the same thing and you are good for the work week.
I had a Spanish professor in college who had a different outfit every day of the semester. Makes my head hurt to think about coordinating that!
I’m moving in this direction, however I live in the Midwest where the weather can change 30 degrees in the same day. I’m selling a lot of items and working towards losing 20-30lbs so I can start my capsule wardrobe.
What A Blessing You Always Are.
Yes Circe DPZ- I feel the same!! So glad I ran across this, I started doing this for the past year. I am a black T-shirt girl all the way!🖤
Loved it.
“Drowning in our possessions “. Amen
We need to be more thoughtful consumers for eachother, not just ourselves.
.
Wow, truth
I am going to look at how I can repeat things/create a uniform, and replace only when things wear out like you said
I like the idea but it’s not for me, I like colors and variety, but overall my wardrobe is pretty simple and I don’t shop a lot
I’m with you! I basically wear neutrals plus a color accent; I don’t have a lot of clothes, but I appreciate a variety of pieces and colors.
Yeah I wear summer stuff all year round with sweaters in the colder seasons.
Me too
I am close to reorganize my wardrobe.
Small wardrobe and all goes together.
do u wear any pins/sew decorations for the children?
This is my hardest place to minimize. It's been a slow process but I'm getting there. Thank you for a thought provoking video.
Joshua, I love your philosophy of minimalism.
It makes me feel relaxed and free. Contentment. Now if I could get my husband to adopt that philosophy.
I needed to hear this again- and fan of Courtney’s project 333…. Thanks Joshua
I love my capsule wardrobe! While it’s mostly tshirts and shorts, I live in Florida most of the year and work from home, so it’s perfect!
Very interesting. Thanks for telling me that - both parts of the message.
I live in Phoenix. A long-sleeve shirt over my t-shirt works just fine.
That’s one of my biggest issues with paring down! Being dressed for the weather or occasion
Lol, I was thinking about switching to all tie dye while I watched this! I feel happy wearing them!
Wow did I need this! Thank you.
Wow I thought I was weird 😂😂 I have always kept my clothing to a minimum since i moved out at 18
10 pairs of socks all the same
10 pairs of underwear different styles of corse but ones I liked
5 pairs of pants different styles they had to really catch my eye and taste
7 shirts different styles fit comfortable and made me happy to wear and reflect my personality!!!
1 swim trunks
1gym shorts
1 nice shorts
2 long sleeves
2 hoodies
2 gym pants red and black
1 good jacket
1 pair of boots for hiking
1 pair of running shoes for comfort
1pair of high top vans my fav
1 pair of sandals with good straps for them hot summer days
your good to go simple is key
Along with purpose people I know take forever to get ready me it’s like 4 min🤦🏼😂😂there like you wearing that im like shure am !!! let’s roll😎 hood video loved it
I like men’s style and I like dressing up (or down) with different looks. It’s like an artist’s canvas. Variety is the spice of life.
95% of my clothes are black, with a few navy, charcoal, and very little other colors thrown in, just so I can say "Not EVERYTHING I own is black", and I love it. Everything goes with everything, I always looks well put together, and I never have to spend too much time figuring out an outfit.
This is so true. I have less than 33 and still dont wear the same thing every day.
I just have multiples of the same items. No decisions about what to wear and no need to run a half empty wash.
Few clothes better quality. Wear what you love everyday. No one else will notice or care.
Mom just had us set out our clothes the night before. My mornings are less hectic when I do it
"Less time wasted", so true!
I try to wear white top and jeans daily. The only outer wear I change is cardigan and jackets 😂
I love this idea! 😊
Totally on board. Also, I watch videos at 2X speed, for capsule viewing. Would do 4x if it were a option.
I have been doing this for over year you are my hero !!!
4:50 love this analogy “fine dining restaurant”
Color is lively, happy and fun. I'm always amused by it. Not sure if I can let go of ruffles, puffy sleeves, and pistachio green🤗 interesting video, I admire those with few classic pieces in a similar color family.
My morning wardrobe choices are based on the day's weather forecast. January clothing is not the same as July.
Thanks
I have addressed exactly this dilemma in my upcoming book!
4:50 - Brillant example!!!
Sounds wonderful... I will give it a try. Thank you!
I love my capsule wardrobe! Also I didn’t know that fact about Christopher Nolan! My favourite director and director of my favourite movie.
