  • Starting to look slightly above the budget category. How do I decide as I’m looking at 4 very different watches to add to my collection. Which one do you like?

For the money of some of those tissot seastars, I’d take a look at the new Longines hydroconquest.
You should be able to get some sort of discount on the big brand watches if you shop around.
In terms of micros/smaller brands I’d take a look at Farer, doxa, Nivada grenchen, zelos, nodus, formex, jack mason, Monta, Chris ward, maen, and traska.

Microbrands were a revelation when I got back into watches after a 20 year break. Got an English, and a few German watches.

I have the Tissot seastar quartz 40mm. Its a nice watch for my skinny wrist. One negative is that the bezel is mineral crystal & in certain lights you can't see the numbers on it clearly at all. Its overpriced really but im hoping the movement lasts for 30+ years. Its a nice looking watch overall though.

Those are nice watches Gary. Some how YT unsubscribed me from your channel so I missed a lot of videos. Guess it’s time to binge watch

I don’t think you missed much as I haven’t posted on this channel in over two months. Retiring took priority.

Stay with the 121 I own the GMT like it very much the mini wears large for a small watch, love the case on the Alpinist GMT very comfortable.

William do you prefer the 121 or the GMT version? Also do you have the green GMT?

In my own case, I would say I am my own version of Stage II looking at Stage III. Started with Vostoks and Seiko 5s plus the odd Steeldive here and there. Then moved on to picking up a Hamilton, a few Zelos watches, a Strela, and both a Dekla german flieger coming, and considering a 24h dial Glycine purist soon. After that though, there is really only my grail being an Omega Speedmaster Pro 3861 and other high-end watches I'll probably just always look at and never own.
FYI, if you are interested in some JDM watches I'd recommend looking at Sakura Watches -- I picked up a JDM Speed Timer from them not that long ago for a lot less than it was elsewhere.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will look into Sakura watches.

Studio Underdog release in batches, sign up for notifications & be quick. Be mindful of the Alpinist GMT thickness, some feel it's a little top heavy.

Thank's for the video for us stage II guys. I'm updating my Seiko Alpinist black dial to a green dial golden hands. Just came across a microbrand Venezianico. Great looking ~1000 euro watches. Has anyone experience of those?

I have not looked at Venezianico. Need to check them out.

If you have OCD dont get an Alpinist. I owned a SARB017 and the crown that rotates the compass will move just with the friction of it rubbing on your top wrist. The leather strap was crap. I sold it after a year or so. Perhaps the new versions has improved. Went through many phases like you and they are always changing. Gone through the homage/clone stage and have kept 2 and sold the rest. I have a PD rolex daytona homage, as will never buy a $30,000+ original as well as a PD Omega Alaska Project Homage very much enjoy both! Do you sell your watches or keep them all?

So far I have not sold any but getting to that point.

Studio Underdog website says Watermelon series will be restocked March 2024. Also the Tissot Seastar quartz is far better value. They don't say on their website but the movement is a high accuracy quartz to just seconds a year.

My "stage 2" was underpined by a complete moonswatch collection, the Seiko Alpinist and the Casio black dial Gshock (full metal). I cannot recommend the Alpinist more...it hits way beyond its class. The cyclops was a winner for me and the splash of white works nicely on the dial for me. My "stage 3" will be a bigger jump to an Omega vintage Constellation, the Navitimer B03 and the Speedmaster. The new Longines Conquest Heritage and the CW Bel Canto / Moonphase are probably in this category.

I have a question for you. Do you find the Alpinist too thick and top heavy?

    • @technoviking4131
      @technoviking4131 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@GaryWatches I have a 7inch wrist and it sits smaller than I originally expected. Its not too high on the wrist and definetly not too thick for an "explorer" themed watch. Its extremely elegant actually - large watches (especially large divers) are not for me, and this one is extremely classy by comparison. I literally live in the alps and took it for a short hike under my jacket earlier today - it doesnt catch a sleeve (and sits neatly under my leather gloves also). It winds rather quietly with a neat little friction (very polite and "Japanese" in elegance). I am considering the new GMT version as an addition to the PC but I certainly wont replace this one as its really fantastic. The factory strap is wearable albeit somewhat stiff, but a high quality leather aftermarket version is amazing on this watch. I recommend Hirsch as they're well known for quality and craftsmanship (also I live close to the factory so that helps). There is a bunch of enthusiasm online for the SARB017 but honestly, in my opinion, that older dial and caseback do not compare well to the catchy darker green Prospex version with it's fun see-through caseback. The SARB017 is also nowhere near a homage to the original Alpinist so I had no hestiation with the newer Prospex version - and I never looked back.
