    Hello everyone,
    My name is Jason Leung and welcome to ‪@ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL‬ ! I wanted to make a tutorial on how to do side snap kick in Shotokan Karate. Yoko-Geri or side kick is one of the most difficult techniques to perform properly in Shotokan.
    It requires great physical prowess, flexibility, dexterity, and sharp technique! Try your best, watch the whole video and have some fun!

    I have been training since I was 16 and am now 68yrs old, having practised 3 martial arts extensively, a TKD 4th dan, 10yrs in Wing Chun and now a 1st dan in Shotokan and I can recognise a good instructor a mile away. The Sensei here is a very good teacher and a good practitioner. His students are lucky to have him.

      Wow, I really appreciate what you said, as that means a lot to me. I'm now 30, but have been training since 11 years old. The martial arts definitely require much sacrifice and dedication. I find that the new generation does not have the patience for learning a martial art as those did in the past. Not everyone is like this however. As the martial arts require delayed gratification usually until shodan or first degree black. And even at that point, black belt is only the beginning as my sensei used to say.

    As a practitioner of a style very similar to Kyokushin Karate, (the founder of my style, KokoroKan Karate studied under Mas Oyama and Tadashi Nakamura in the 60's and 70's who's name is Kaicho Frank Rossetti), I love the content and instruction in your video here. I hold the rank of 3rd Dan and having been an instructor at our dojo for years now. I can appreciate and respect a true and thorough instructor when I see one. Keep on the path of knowledge and teaching the way Sensei and may God bless you and keep you always. 🙏🏻✝️🙌🏻

    I've done yoko geri for decades and your technique is superb. But I was taught isn an early version of TKD which was really Shotokan with the main difference being the side kick which was the Korean iteration which is more like a back kick and the motion is more like a piston whereas the Japanese kicks are shaped like a fan. The KOREAN version is much harder biomechanically to master and I'm still trying to get it right

    I know what you mean about the transitional position that some stylists use when learning and practising some kicks. I think that the reason why some get into a bad habit of resting their foot when standing on one leg is because their teacher/sensei make them do kata super slowly to push them for endurance reasons.
    I grew up doing Ed Parker's American Kenpo and remember being drilled kata's (called sets and forms in Kenpo) over and over again, in slow motion for endurance during warm up.
    The Sensei / teacher who started that craze off probably didn't think at the negative consequences it would cause. Good point you picked up on it. Cheers

    • @ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL
      @ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate you sharing your training history. Yes, I've been in the same position before - being drilled repetitively techniques that are somewhat questionable. However, I've always maintained a very open mind when it comes to the martial arts, and I believe being able to adapt, evolve, and adjust are keys to always refining ones skill and improving. If we just accept that you must chamber the foot by touching your leg before you side kick, that will be the end of your martial arts growth. Learn it from your teachers, respect their teachings, but never accept one teaching as the sole truth or method. Become proficient at the basics and fundamentals, then eventually find your own path or put your own spin on the training. This is how to keep evolving overtime. Rather than staying stuck in time with irrelevant techniques.

    • @jusroc6353
      @jusroc6353 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL For sure, I agree. I respect some of the people who originally taught me. Although that was a long time ago. One book I learnt a lot from was Bill Wallace's "Dynamic Stretching and Kicking" on how he side kicked, which I found very interesting. I believe his side kick is similar way to how Jhoon Rhee taught Bruce Lee to side kick. More so raising your knee high and to an angle and push-kicking out at your target while at the same time moving your entire body in the kicking direction (so as to give the kick more power through momentum / mass). If this isn't how you perform side kicks, i would imagine it is worth considering.
      My Sensei at the time were rigid in how they taught their techniques, and perhaps people learning alternative methods caught them out. Yes. Respect your Sensei, until perhaps you are Sensei and then try things out for fun, entertainment and success!

      there's little difference between kicking airs and bags. .kicking stationary bags is for power development, timing and accurate calculation to measures for a right distance. . said kick need not be retracted at once upon impact and stays there for a fraction of a second in order to assess its penetrating force. . .whereas kicking airs is to assess its "whip principle" and balance. .that's why it should be retracted at once upon delivery. .

    Yoko Geri, Mawashi Geri etc needs extremely good mobile hip joints, in lack of which one could never be able to perform these kicks, no matter how much he/she practice. No technique would ever work if the hip joint is not super mobile. Look at his pivot leg toe when he is executing the kick. He is hardly turning it, he must be having super smooth hip joints, and frustrating part is no teacher talks about it.
