I read that Julie Andrews wasn’t gonna make an appearance in the movie because she didn’t want to take the spotlight away from Emily Blunt and she totally approved of her playing Mary Poppins.
@5:35 I can answer why that was supposed to be Julie Andrews and wasn't. I haven't even seen the film yet, but I read an article that talked about Julie Andrews turning down the cameo role, out of respect for Emily Blunt being Mary Poppins. She wanted it to be "Emily's show" and didn't want the people to say "but oh, there's the REAL Mary Poppins right there" during the cameo. A very respectful act on her part imo. This is why Julie Andrews is such a cool person.
That cameo went to Karen Dotrice, the original Jane Banks. On top of Julie Andrews being just a swell person by respecting Emily Blunt taking on the role, we have the original Jane meeting this version of Jane which is just as swell.
They asked Julie to be the cameo, but she said no because she didn’t want her appearance to overshadow Emily’s performance in the movie. What a class act
The wonderful thing about this movie is that, even though there are references to the original, the way they tied them in was respectful and fun. I felt like I did when I watched the original for the first time. Even at age 25, I felt the magic of being a child again. And that makes this a good squeal and a good movie overall😊
Evidently, Julie Andrews didn't want to be in the film, because she didn't want there to be comparisons to her, and Emily Blunt while Emily was doing the role. So it was a sign of respect. ETA: love the review as always. I like the original film, but I acknowledge the issues it has, so if this film has issues as well? eh. It won't make the film lesser than the original, because the original is flawed.
I can’t argue that the movie never needed to exist but I’m glad it does. It gave me all the feels. And as far as the less exciting plot goes, it was mostly drawn from Mary Poppins opens the door.
I saw it today and I actually liked it! I haven’t seen the original in a very long time but I was just in a theatre production of Mary Poppins, but I wasn’t constantly comparing it. The only time I really compared it was the weird uncomfortable slightly sexual tones in the song “The Cover is not the Book” because I was like “Mary Poppins...shouldn’t have this weird Chicago fee but ok” but I think I’m getting over it the more I listen. I mean, Lin’s rap is particularly amazing 😆. I also loved the 2D animation. It was so cool and I loved how it tied into the story! I really REALLY loved it! (Also: I TOTALLY WAS THINKING IT SHOULDVE BEEN JULIE ANDREWS AT THE END BECAUSE THAT WOULDVE JUST BEEN THE ICING ON THE CAKE. But Angela Lansbury was great too.)
I thought this sequel was musically and visually spectacular. Not as magical as the original but the effort being put into this one was pretty forgivable.
According to Julie Andrews she turned down appearing in the film so that her presence wouldn't distract from Emily Blunt making the role her own. So instead of the audience seeing old Mary Poppins and new Mary Poppins they could just view Emily as Mary Poppins.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water was mostly 2D. (The trailers just didn't reflect it for whatever reason.) Also the recent MLP Movie, which was animated using computers, but was 2D nonetheless.
@@lenisemicolon Well yes obviously. Computers have been used for colouring since like the 90s. MLP had more digital lighting and effects and less hand drawings.
@@superroydude 2D animation is almost always digital animation. Characters and sets are drawn digitally and moved with character rigs and digital tweens. The only place you'll find hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation is in an animation classroom.
@@lenisemicolon Not true. Most cartoon tv shows are hand drawn (on a digital screen yes but still by hand) : Adventure time, regular show, Simpsons, gravoty falls, spongebob etc. Many shows like rick and morty use shortcuts like tweening, but even then it's mixed with hand drawn animation. If we're talking Disney, the only things i've seen in which they use tweening are their some of their little kid cartoons. They would never use such cheap animation tricks on a WDAS or DisneyToon film.
I super agree about feeling the nostalgia in this movie that was supposed to be felt in B&TB (for which I had none)! I just saw this tonight and I’m with you! I was humming and tapping my feet and just all-around delighted! I had the same feeling with this one that I had with the original with new moments and references. For a Disney remake/sequel that’s the best I can ask for.
I pray to everything that's good and pure in this godforsaken world that this movie's success and the new management of Disney Animation Studios bring back 2D animation movies.
Ghostbusters 2 and Force Awakens vibe. My mom has never seen the first Mary Poppins but I want her to see this movie. Emily's Mary came across as very warm to me. I saw her smile openly, laugh, and held back tears in this film. It was odd with what they did with Jack and Jane, but I enjoyed the performances -- I also believed Disney learned the singing lessons from B&tB. Good work, everyone ;') .. PS: Did anyone else LOVE seeing 2-D animation again?? It was refreshing and made me realize that the last time I saw 2D drawing dancing and singing on a screen was back in The Princess and the Frog.
Thanks for the review! I agree with you on "Beauty and the Beast". There were two problems. The animated movie was excellent and not very old. 2. There are things that can be done with animation that just doesn't work with live action. So you left the movie feeling like: " Oh, it was good but.... why ?" There was no need for a new movie. Hopefully, I won't experience that with the new MP. It looks like fun!
P. L. Travers hated the original 1964 movie. She might have hated this movie a little less. The sequel kept closer to the books, and Mary Poppins herself was more mischievous. In the sequel, you could see past Mary Poppins' stern persona and that she was the source of all the fun and chaos.
YOU are adorable. And organized. Thank you for clearly moving from point to point during your review, and not just blathering aimlessly and repetitively as do so many less professional reviewers. They brought back 2D animation? Very cool! I haven’t looked into this movie yet so I am going on blind when I see it (meanwhile I’ve seen Spider-Man twice now with the hubs). I can’t wait to hear the songs! Keep up the good work Andre!
Different time and different situation is my response to those who try to compare the original Mary Poppins with Mary Poppins Returns. There were several important themes that struck me in this film and one of them was the way that the Banks children i e Jane and Michael, didn't grow up to be snobs, like their dear ol' dad tried to portray himself during Edwardian England times. I find it interesting that the original film is set during the final year of King Edward's reign and this story takes place during a mere five-day period in 1935 while the "Great Slump" or Depression is going on. Lin Manuel Miranda's character as Jack The Lamplighter lets us know that he first encountered Jane and Michael Banks as a child when he was taken in by Bert, who's now touring the world? Another point is that we know Michael did give his father George Banks the tuppence which caused all of the mayhem at the bank when Mr. Dawes Senior, in his greediness, tried to take the coins from Michael's hands as the boy wanted to buy crumbs to feed the birds from the old woman sitting on the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral. We know that George Banks took the money and he invested it for Michael and that George Banks must have been hired back. The man continued working there and he was a very much esteemed employee according to Mr. Dawes Junior. What I find fascinating is that another actor played Mr. Dawes Junior in the original film and here is Dick Van Dyke playing the role in this film. I'm not going to give it away but, there's also that Easter egg wink that Mr. Dawes Junior gives to Mary Poppins after we see her shadow moving back time...I first saw this film two days ago and, like you, I'm going back today....Emily Blunt's Mary doesn't outright argue with this Mr. Banks "Michael". Instead she lets the guy process all of the horrible things happening while teaching him the power of love and how much his children are fighting to save their dad....
We think the original can't be replaced, but it was a nice film to watch. We liked that Emily Blunt was her own MP. That's a good point, the 2D animation was very enjoyable to watch. We didn't talk about it that way in our review. Thanks, Andre for another great review!
I think this is the best review of Mary Poppins Returns out there. Nostalgia Critic's review feels like nothing but fanboy raging from a Star Wars fanboy simply because it wasn't a masterpiece. I agree that it feels more like an homage, but not just to the original Mary Poppins, but to other old goofy Disney musicals, like "Bedknobs and Broomsticks," and "Pete's Dragon." It was clearly made by fans of the original putting their own talents into it, not necessarily a copy, but an attempt at a replica, studying the original in depth, remaking it true to the roots, but with a few personal touches.
Julie Andrews turned down the cameo role out of respect for Emily. She said she didn't want people to see her in the movie and be like..there's the real Mary Poppins. She said it's Emily's show.

I have a comment about the music. It's all great. A wonderful collection of new songs. For people who are saying it'll never touch the originals, you have to consider that no one back then came out the theater knowing all those songs as well. Sure you may have the melodies in the back of your mind (as this film did), but it wasn't until 25-30 years later, when VHS became a thing that you as a child was able to rewind those original songs 1000 times a day to get it lovingly branded in your brain. Just wait until this new film comes to video and Netflix. you wont go 5 minutes in the day without your children rewinding these songs. For the next several years.
I loved this movie, and yes, the cameo you mentioned seemed a little, like, "Huh? Why her?" but Julie Andrews didn't want a cameo because she didn't want to distract from Emily's Mary Poppins. She did give Emily her blessing though. I double checked before I went because I'm a huge JA fan, so she was cool with it, so I went and I loved it!
Thank you Andre, today I learned that the actress was not Bryce Dallas Howard. I swore that was her from the feature movie poster (the head on POV) clearly not her from the side profile.
If they can make sequels this good every 54 years then I'm not gonna complain. Emily Blunt is terrific. The music was beautiful and enjoyable. Great dance scene too. MARY POPPINS is BACK JACK...the lamplighter Leary..ahh, thank you.
Loved this! Saw the original when it first came out- and dare I say it...? I liked Emily Blunt's Mary BETTER than Julie Andrews' Mary ( Sacrilege, I know!) Ms Andrews portrayal was more matter of fact, while Ms Blunt is gleefully mischievous, with a constant merry glint in her eyes. She's clearly having a blast, and daring you not to have one along with her. Can't wait to see this again! And this was a very good review, André. I agree with just about everything you said.
I didn’t know you would be into Mary Poppins but I am a hell of glad you’re doing this I was thinking of seeing it with my mom actually because I definitely wanted to see it
I like a lot of things other than superhero movies, Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers and such. It's just a bummer that sometimes TH-cam, "the algorithm" and/or... no offense... even some of my viewers... won't allow me to reach outside the bubble I've been placed in. So have to decide how to handle it in the future.
Andre "Black Nerd" Well I say if you want to do something else go for it don’t let your fans stop it just because some of us don’t like it pack some of your reviews I haven’t seen but that won’t stop me from watching your review on it because who knows I might have missed out I won’t know Unless I have seen it to myself you’re just giving your opinion and for me that’s very valuable
These are the same feelings I had about the movie! I loved that it was such an homage. So much nostalgia. And I know EXACTLY which cameo you were talking about! I agree! But also, did you notice that (SPOILER) Emily's reflection in the balloon the second time WAS, in fact, Julie? I absolutely loved that.
YESSSSS! I've been waiting for the Rescue Rangers movie!!! And, a Chip & Dale movie in general. I've always wondered why they have not used those characters; instead of remaking all there other movies into live action.
I didnt grow up with the OG Mary, So no emotional attachment here, but I really enjoyed this movie and I think it has a lot of good stuff to teach kids and some stuff for adults too. I think it's the only disney remake which I genuinely enjoyed.
When they couldn’t get Julie Andrews, they asked Angela Landsbury because Bedknobs and Broomsticks started as a Mary Poppins sequel until P L Travers pulled the plug. (She was the only person who didn’t like the original) plus how awesome was her cameo?
The author put in her will that she never wanted another Mary Poppins movie made. REALLY THINK ABOUT THAT. That was her dying wish. That is the only reason I need to not see it.
Andre, I have been watching your videos for almost 3 years now, and there is something I've got to ask you... what the heck are you saying in your sign off? "I love you like a playin' cousin?" "I love you like a play, cousin?" "I love you like a plain cousin?" I have never been able to tell, and even if it is one of those options, what does that even mean? Regardless, love the content, keep it coming, looking forward to your 2018 rant.
Spiderverse is 3D though, Andre, even SpiderHam. It's just heavily stylized 3D, which is really cool since we very rarely get it, it's usually "photo-realistic flesh blobs" ever since CGI animated movies came to be.
This movie is by far my favorite movie of this year, also I loved all of the other nods to the first movie and references to the other Disney properties
Holy, I've never thought of that before. Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers is the ONE series that would make sense, and even benefit from a Live-action CGI movie. There was always a disconnect between the animal world and the human world in Chip and Dale, and they could LEAN INTO THAT, have the plucky young kid who understands/sees what the Rangers are doing and show a complete disconnect between two parallel storylines. Like many episodes DID.
I totally agree with you Andre about the live action version of Chip and Dale's rescue rangers!!! I say you and I should just write it and get credited for it! I am totally down if you are! Let me know let's make it happen!
It's our most favouritist imaginative ANDY! You know it's a win when you pay to see Disney and get to see Andre for free! :3 ...side question: how many people actually call you Andy, Andre??
I haven't seen it yet but I honestly I think I'm going to cry as soon as the 2D animation starts. I almost cried for the trailer when I saw the animation. I hope I can make it through this LOL

Fate Or Chance? 🤣🤣 I am the king of the tower
Loved this!
Saw the original when it first came out- and dare I say it...?
I liked Emily Blunt's Mary BETTER than Julie Andrews' Mary ( Sacrilege, I know!)
Ms Andrews portrayal was more matter of fact, while Ms Blunt is gleefully mischievous, with a constant merry glint in her eyes. She's clearly having a blast, and daring you not to have one along with her. Can't wait to see this again!
And this was a very good review, André. I agree with just about everything you said.
Fun fact: the story Lin raps in the music hall scene was an actual story Mary told in the book
Do a review on bohemian rhapsody!!!
Enjoying the talking style review. Can tell you enjoyed yourself
Disney needs to make a gargoyles movie
YESSSSS! I've been waiting for the Rescue Rangers movie!!! And, a Chip & Dale movie in general.
I've always wondered why they have not used those characters; instead of remaking all there other movies into live action.
I miss Andre singing “I have a review fur youuuuuu blacknerdrevueeeeeews” 😂🤩😭
You are fun! Love this review. Subscribed
I’M MARY POPPINS Y’ALL
"Mary Poppins Returns" is the greatest movie I've seen in YEARS. Brilliant! Marc Shaiman and Lin Manuel Miranda are National Treasures!!
5:11 the exact definition of TH-cam rewind
after watching Nostalgia Critic's review of Nutcracker in 3D Where Andre made a Cameo this is better and more heartwarming talking about Marry Poppins
Spiderverse is 3D though, Andre, even SpiderHam.
It's just heavily stylized 3D, which is really cool since we very rarely get it, it's usually "photo-realistic flesh blobs" ever since CGI animated movies came to be.
I read that Spider-Verse is a mix of 2-D traditional and CG animation.
Since there are 8 or 9 Mary Poppins books, we should look forward to a few decades of Mary Poppins movies if this becomes a big seller.
Merry Christmas Andre HO HO HO
This movie is by far my favorite movie of this year, also I loved all of the other nods to the first movie and references to the other Disney properties
Holy, I've never thought of that before. Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers is the ONE series that would make sense, and even benefit from a Live-action CGI movie. There was always a disconnect between the animal world and the human world in Chip and Dale, and they could LEAN INTO THAT, have the plucky young kid who understands/sees what the Rangers are doing and show a complete disconnect between two parallel storylines. Like many episodes DID.
"A movie about a circus, that Wolverine was in" I want that on a shirt too, can I just take your quotes and put them on shirts? I'm going to Zazzle
*I'M MARY POPPINS, Y'ALL!*
This is what I felt when walking out of screening of it a over the weekend
Welp now with Atlantis, I now want a Chip and Dale live action movie. Thanks Andre!
I saw you in an ad for Disney land at this movie
Love all your videos!
Julie Andrews was busy voicing the Karathen in Aquaman 😍 can't wait to see this movie too.
I like this version of your review. Great job.
It's been Pooh 2011 since the last 2-D animated film
my favorite review channel.
I’m taking my little cousin to see it. She is excited, but I’m kinda on the fence about it. I’m hoping her excitement will be contagious!
I haven't seen it yet but I honestly I think I'm going to cry as soon as the 2D animation starts. I almost cried for the trailer when I saw the animation. I hope I can make it through this LOL
