Because of some of the stuff that Brian said, I want to alarm people of a few things. I have not seen Mary Poppins Returns yet, but I have watched a few interviews that Emily Blunt has done for the film. In many of the interviews, she’s stated that she did not re-watch the original film before filming this movie, but instead read the book. She also said that she based her version of Mary Poppins on how the character was portrayed in the book. And for those of you who haven’t heard much about the book, Mary Poppins is supposedly very vain and rude, but still shows signs of humanity. That’s how Emily intended to portray Mary Poppins, so basically this movie was always intended to be very different from the original, as was the character, Mary.
teamatcvg rawks! That makes a lot of sense. I remember reading the book when I was a kid, and I agree. Mary Poppins was very vain and rude, and strict. This movie emphasized a lot of that.
Haven't seen it yet but I will say this. Emily Blunt was sanctioned by Julie Andrews to make it her own rather than emulate what she did back in 1965. Keep in mind too that Andrews got typecast in those kinds of roles after the movie and she hated that for awhile. If you've seen The Edward Blake dark comedy SOB with Richard Mulligan or Victor Victoria she went to great lengths to show she could do more than Mary Poppins. It took Julie some time to accept that part and went on moving forward. I am going this with new eyes rather than live insode a bubble.
Just a note: Julie Andrew's former husband was Blake Edwards who also made movies like The Pink Panther and The Great Race along with Victor Victoria and SOB. You are correct in stating that Julie hated that she got type cast, especially after following up Mary Poppins with The Sound of Music and even when she did Mary Poppins there was the huge controversy over Audrey Hepburn getting the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, which she said the studio pulled contract on her in an interview I saw with her. In fact, the folks at Fox, which produced and distributed The Sound of Music came to Disney to watch the screen tests to see how Julie came off on film.
Couldn't have summed it up better, Brian! I have to say I also had a really hard time getting into it, and wasn't expecting there to be a bad guy, but it was overall a really great movie! It is just so hard to compare with the original because they are so different! And I agree about Angela Lansbury's part being written for Julie. I was disappointed not to see her at all in the movie, but she turned down a cameo so this could be Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins, and not hers which I totally get and I love that she did that! Glad Dick Van Dyke jumped at the opportunity when he heard they were making a sequel though! I definitely recommend this movie!
I believe that particular organ is called a Wurlitzer! They have one at our state's main theatre and they play it every so often with music suitable for the occasion. I think ours is about a hundred years old or something!

That is give or take the time zone you live in. Lol I do hope we run into each other this coming summer when we get to go back to Disney Land!
I just saw this movie today. Like you said, this movie understands what made the movie soo special and does the absolute best that it could do to honor it. I think that Emily Blunt did a fantastic job of honoring Julie Andrews performance while still making Mary Poppins her own. I have honestly not been much of a Lin-Manuel Miranda fan but if he keeps doing things like this specifically for Disney, I might be persuaded to come on board. I enjoyed his music for Moana. I don’t know if I would put this movie overall on the same level as Mary Poppins and Saving Mr. Banks but it would still make my top 10 list. I definately enjoyed the lamp lighters song the best.
Matthew Garber who played the child actor Michael Banks in the first one passed away in 1977. You can find it on IMDB. He passed away from Pancreatitis.
As a Julie Andrews devotee (so to speak) you had me hooked for the entire video and considering my attention span with TH-cam videos; that’s saying something! Every time you mentioned her name, i was a happy camper! I saw the movie opening night with my mom and we both fell in love with both the movie and the music!
I just got back from seeing the movie and I agree with all of your points 100%. I had a hard time getting into the movie until the cartoon scenes. Each movie is great in their own way. Thanks for your review Brian!
I feel like THIS movie is to “Mary Poppins” what “The Force Awakens” was to “Star Wars”. It felt pretty much like the original with some fun references to the original, but also carefully introduced some new characters and content. They cautiously bridged the gap between the old and new. And I 100% agree with you about the role that Angela Lansbury played... felt like it was originally intended for Julie Andrews.
I just got home from Mary Poppins Returns and I absolutely loved it. I also completely agree with you. It definitely had its awesome moments that were better, but some moments that weren't as good as the first one.
We went but the organ got stuck when it had to go down, AND the way the castmembers handled the refunds was horrible... I'm glad that you had a good experience tho (;

For everyone who thought was Bert they mixed it up and was really his brother in the movie “Mary Poppins Returns” If you listen in the movie closely Mary Poppins says Jack (Bert’s Brother) It’s been quite some years since the original Mary Poppins came out so Dick Van Dyke has changed and is now in his 90s so they weren’t able to use him as Bert (if they’d used him he’d have been old) ! During the original movie in the Bank Scene Mr Dick Van Dyke had makeup on and wigs on to make him look older! The 3 new kids in the movie (Georgie , Anabel and John! Jane and Micheal are their parents in the movie
For me the first time I went to watch it I cried my eyes out. Not really but I was so emotional. They said they would capture the feel of the original and make a new story and they absolutely did! Jack, the new kids and mr Dawes junior’s nefew was a nice addition. I’ve never seen Colin firth as the bad guy before and I was a little apprehensive. Not because I thought he couldn’t do it well but because I have this impression of him in my mind and heart that I don’t want tarnished. It wasn’t and he sold it! The one minor issue I have is the fact that this one has a clear villain but not the original. Its refreshing not to have a clear villain but I liked the ending all the same. I was also disappointed that Julie Andrews turned down the cameo but Angela Lansbury was great to and actually seemed like an alter ego to the bird lady. Livelier. The same goes for Meryl Streep’s Topsy. It’s a hyped up version of uncle Albert. Overall I feel the second one was a lot more fun then the first. The first stuck to the book more though quite loosely still. I love both equally for different reasons!

I loved the movie.. it was done right. Yes characters are not the same but no one can be exactly like they were. The little snip its of the original songs were played throughout if anybody noticed. 🌂✨🎈
I really loved it, but have told friends not to compare it to the old one. I need to listen to the songs again, they didn’t seem as memorable as the ones from the first film but maybe that’s because I’ve only watched it once

I LOVED THIS MOVIE, it's so annoying I can't talk about it with my friends because they haven't seen it. Well it was an amazing movie and I'm gonna memorize the soundtrack. If you don't like Mary Poppins you'll love Mary Poppins Returns, it was better, they're both good, but this one's better.

I agree that this was not as good as the first Mary Poppins. I feel like the writing of the songs was done better in the first film. This film I don't remember a single song from the film. It was not catchy at all. Visually I think I like how this film looks. The first Mary Poppins looks like the entire film shot on stages. Marry Poppins Returns does not look like it was shot on stage but shot in England. I like how England looks in this film. I think Burt was done better. This one was not great.
To be fair, when the 20/20 special was released for Mary Poppins Returns they made it quite clear it was not the original. They said Burt was traveling and that's why they got Jack, and the movie has a significant time jump. I haven't seen the movie myself yet but I loved the behind the scenes documentary they did for 20/20

It's a beautiful film but it really bothered me how cold and distant the character was. Spoiler................................... She never hugged the children, gave them a reassuring hand on the shoulder and imho, was stingy with her praise and generous with her criticism. Nonetheless, I recommend you watch it. I plan on owning them.

I agree that this was not as good as the first Mary Poppins. I feel like the writing of the songs was done better in the first film. This film I don't remember a single song from the film. It was not catchy at all. Visually I think I like how this film looks. The first Mary Poppins looks like the entire film shot on stages. Marry Poppins Returns does not look like it was shot on stage but shot in England. I like how England looks in this film. I think Burt was done better. This one was not great.
To be fair, when the 20/20 special was released for Mary Poppins Returns they made it quite clear it was not the original. They said Burt was traveling and that's why they got Jack, and the movie has a significant time jump. I haven't seen the movie myself yet but I loved the behind the scenes documentary they did for 20/20
That's because the entire film wasn't shot on sound stages and much of the "Trip a Light Fantastic" was filmed on the grounds of Buckingham Palace.
Really?! I cant believe you dont think they are catchy😱.. I have not been able to get "Nowhere to go but up" and "the cover is not the book" out of my head since I watched the film and it was about a month ago😂 but then again everyone has different taste
It's a beautiful film but it really bothered me how cold and distant the character was. Spoiler...................................
She never hugged the children, gave them a reassuring hand on the shoulder and imho, was stingy with her praise and generous with her criticism. Nonetheless, I recommend you watch it. I plan on owning them.
