    People may think it as weird for Kupe to make a face with bulged eyes and a sticked out tongue but this is a reference to the Hakka war chant, where those performing the dance make faces like that as a form of intimidation (whether you knew that or not, it's an interesting detail and reference to Maori culture).

      Scrambled 59 the facial expressions are known as pūkana, and are not necessarily for the purpose of intimidation; it is more often used to emphasise a passionate display of emotion. Remember, kapa haka comes in many shapes and forms, some for war, yes, but also for welcoming, for grieving, and other significant and emotionally charged events.

    I like Kupe and Matthias’ defeats most of all. Kupe congratulates your strength and moves on either to a retirement or afterlife he has long ago accepted, without hesitation. Matthias admits defeat, and then ponders if you are a good enough leader to keep your conquests.
    Idk but the feeling of Kupe acting all “well done man, here’s to you” and Matthias basically saying he’ll sit back and watch your rule from the sidelines, judging you. It just seems infinitely more peaceful and calm/kind, compared to almost every other Civ.
    No sad crying. No stoic bravado. No screams of rage or disbelief or grief. No begging for their people to be saved/spared. No curses or insults. Just acceptance from one, and from the other, a question to you that is also philosophical pondering to himself.

    • @reescantdance7831
      @reescantdance7831 5 ปีที่แล้ว +120

      @Happy Hitler Laurier's impotence in improving the conditions of Quebecans, and vocal opposition against allowing Afro-Americans escaping segregation is an example. Kristina's Counter-Reformation arguably hastened sectarianism and violence against Catholics in the already sectarian Sweden. Certain tribes in New Zealand offer more critical views of Kupe, in opposition to the romanticized orthodox tradition. Matthias' policy of expanding the Black Army, while admirable and well ahead of it's time, required the suppression of the Hungarian nobility and ultimately proved futile after his death; it was utterly moot for more than a few decades. And Suleiman? The man is a controversial figure in the middle east to this day. Between the murder of Ibrahim and his own son, and the centralization of power that developed sectarian ethnic tension underlying modern Turkey, Suleiman could be heavily scrutinised. That's not to say that these leaders do not deserve their famed status; far from it. But their famed status is the source for the need to view them in a more critical light.

      xLetalis Hey dude/dudette, thanks for the love react.
      Allow me to elaborate on the inaccuracies I've noticed, and provide an explanation through my knowledge.
      --Kupe's outfit appears to be more... Hawaiian. Although it's mentioned he hails from the ancestral homeland of Hawaiki, and according to which tribe (note that every tribe throughout NZ all have their own stories, views on mythologies, beliefs, traditions etc), Hawaiki isn't Hawaii nor is it Tahiti. From what I can gather, it's widely believed Hawaiki is an uncharted island that sunk long ago.. An event that led its chief, Kupe, to set sail and find new land to prevent his people from dying. There is a noticeable difference between the attire that the Maori and Hawaiian Chiefs wear. Maori have more of a long coloured feather coat that surrounded their body almost like a toga. The Hawaiians often wore capes, much like what Kupe is wearing. Since his status is a chief, he should be wearing the cloak. However, Maori warriors also wore a similar thing except they did not don feathers but flax instead. Also, the cloth around his waist also appears to be Hawaiian. I do understand why Kupe is wearing this garb, perhaps the developers thought Kupe was Hawaiian because of the name "Hawaiki". In my opinion, Hawaiians were pretty bad ass.
      Kupe's necklace, and if I remember the name correctly its called a Taonga I think, seems unordinary. Most necklaces that the chiefs wore resembled their ancestry, a carving of a humanoid. You can find this on Google to get a better look at what I'm talking about. It's just that I've never actually seen a Taonga like that. It's fascinating.
      It's believed Te Reo wasn't an oral language back then as it is now. Though other tribes may argue against that. To my knowledge, Hawaiians were the first Polynesians to create an oral language. The birth of other Poly languages most likely hailed from them. Also, "Civ" and "mate" are not words that I'm aware of in Te Reo. It's almost like they based Kupe off a casual sarcastic Kiwi lol all he needed to say was "Too much, bro. Ka pai!" and he would've definitely broken the fourth wall.
      Now if I remember from the gameplay, the Marae is used as a spiritual boost. Not exactly true.
      Marae was often the home of a chief and the place of meeting for him/her and his/her warriors (Yes, in some tribes females could be elected to be Chiefs. Although not common in history, you'll find stories about a few who led their tribes to greatness) to discuss battle, village improvement, defences, hunting and growing food. Marae weren't really a place to worship the gods, in fact, I think Maori constructed a different home that acted as a temple for worship and prayer with carvings that resembled the gods. Although they mostly gave praise to nature after a successful hunt, harvest and fish. They took their religions seriously. Women were above men in their eyes because they were seen as gods because they gave life.
      The Haka was used to install fear into the enemy before a battle. Pretty much similar to the aztec death whistle, expect this is physical. It would be frightening to hear those frightful chants on a stormy night lol
      That's about it. Other than all that, I'd like to take my time to thank everyone for their positive feedback on my ancestor Kupe. I'm astonished to see him in a t video game withouthe use of mods

      The Maori consider him to be a pretty big deal. He's a legendary figure who may or may not have existed. The point is he stands for the best qualities of the Maori; that, and picking any other historical figure would have been majorly controversial and seen as favouring one iwi over the others. Kupe is someone most, if not all, Maori can agree on.

      The nice touch is that she speaks Old French in both, because she was born in Poitiers, France and Old French WAS her native language, even though she was the queen consort of France and later queen of England.
      Fun fact: She was mother to Richard I, The Lionheart.

    • @lordfedjuvekinval252
      @lordfedjuvekinval252 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@teutonieth I'm pretty sure she's actually speaking in Occitan, which is what people spoke in southern France back then. It was the language of many celebrated medieval poets (the troubadours, or trovadores). They mostly sang of chivalry and courtly love, which is why, at least i think, Eleanor claims she "rules the court of love".

    I *kind* of understand some of what Leonor says, "Cai si siá" is like "que así sea" (spanish), or "qu'ainsi soit-il" (modern french) or ""che così sia" in italian, "Cour d'amor" is like "Cour d'amour" in french, or "Corte de amor/Corte d'amore" in spanish/italian respectivelly. "Regime" is "rule", of course, only it's pronounced like in spanish or italian. "Vostra seds de puder" is like "Vuestra sed de poder" in spanish, "votre soif de pouvoir" in french, and "la vostra sete di potere" in italian. It seems the language she speaks is most similar to spanish. Old french, I presume.
