  • Woodturning - well, here's the video for the bowl I posted some close ups of on Facebook last week. It's probably my favourite of all the ones I've done and is currently for sale at my Open House in the Brighton Artists Open Houses 2019 if any of you are in the area at weekends in May...
It took a while to come up with a name but I think this just about covers it! Check out my blog for more information: www.stewartfur...
Next weekend I'll be at Makers Central on the Chestnut Products stand - I hope to see lots of you there!
See me demonstrate at Chestnut Products Woodturning Weekender on 3-4 August 2019...chestnutproduc...

    ....................................................
Since I started making these videos in 2017, I have been lucky enough to receive the support of some manufacturers with materials to use in my videos. Since May 2018, Chestnut Products have provided me with stains, an iridescent paints sample set, lacquers and waxes. I'd like to thank them for their kind and generous support. Martin Saban-Smith has provided me with a sample set of Intrinisic Colours.
All other products and tools, unless where indicated, have been bought from suppliers at retail prices. Products mentioned in my videos are for information purposes so that viewers know what I have used.

It was really great to meet and chat at Makers Central. What a lovely chap you are. Your pieces are even more beautiful in real life, they're such an inspiration - even if I do still sit here shouting "enough, enough already" at the screen! 😂

Hi Kathryn - great to meet you too. I'm pleased you've been able to see some of my turnings 'in the wood' as the pictures never seem as good as the real thing. I hope to keep you shouting 'enough' for a long time to come 😀

Thanks, Jeanie! Delighted you like watching my videos and take the time to comment. Much appreciated! I've already done another version of this one, I like it so much. I guess you're living the dream in CA then - a bit warmer than Brighton and sunnier! I hope to come to US one day - the AAW symposiums look amazing!

I love it Stewart! BTW, would you mind sharing how long you let the lacquer dry before you began to wet sand and polished the piece? There's a lot of data on that process, but the concensous all seem to agree you should wait a minimum of three weeks. Looking at your process it appeared that you just waited overnight.
    Thanks, MV

Thanks, Mike! Delighted you like it. I think the last coat of lacquer had about 36 hours drying time. It's acrylic gloss lacquer. I've not done any research about how long it's best to leave it before treating/abusing it like this. I know melamine lacquer takes at least a week or longer to fully cure. I'll have to be patient and leave one for three weeks to see what difference it makes! Cheers!!

Oh no, oh no! I really don't believe you did that.
That has to hit the national news now.
"Parents up in arms as school children have no stickers!"
Love watching your processes in doing these. Forget the texturing, you're clearly at your greatest pleasure when playing around with some colours. I bet you don't get socks for Christmas, all your family should know by now, just buy some colours.
Have to be honest in that I really didn't like the lines, that was until the still images came up. They look so subtle and really work well.
Have you thought about making a narrow lined stencil you can just hold above the work so that when you spray you don't get the sharp lines you get from when using something like masking tape.
Great job, I bet that's one of the first to sell on your open day.
    Well done!

Thanks, Paul - I always enjoy your comments as you really engage with each piece I make and offer thoughtful points. I've had a suggestion of making stencils from ice cream lids that might do what you suggest....will have to give it a go. Cheers!

@@stewartfurini Thanks Stewart. I'd rather have someone honestly say they didn't like something rather than the standard Well done all the time. Don't have to be brutal, can easily just say not my cup of tea. Ice cream lids sound a great idea. Just lifting them away from the work piece should hopefully give those more subtle edges rather than sharp lines.

Hi Stuart, I’ve recently discovered your videos and have to say I’m really enjoying your work, especially this one. I’m relatively new to woodturning and your inspiring me to get some colours. Can I ask what stains/dies your using with your airbrushing, I’m assuming they are solvent based. Thanks for the inspiration and sharing your techniques.

Cheers, Paul - glad you enjoy the videos! The stains I use are spirit stains from Chestnut Products.

    Did you sell it?

Thank you! I did eventually sell it, though a little regretfully....a woman from Ireland saw it at last year's Woodturning Weekender from Chestnut Products and snapped it up! At least I know it went to someone who really liked it!

@@stewartfurini would love to see a video on your spraying gear and what you recommend one day, if not already done 1, i have a very cheap bench top chinese one which i need to upgrade in the future

Hi Timothy - I use airbrushes at the cheaper end of the market and find they do all I need for colouring wood. Not sure they'd be as good as top notch brushes if I were doing more 'artistic' work with them, but for stains and stencilling they work fine. I will have a think about a set up video - nice idea!
