Hi Mark, I really enjoy your posts. I have raised dairy goats (mostly alpine and nubian) off and on since 1970, but now at 76 I no longer have any goats and miss them terribly.
I wanted to share a goat fence story told to me when we lived for a while in Oklahoma. An old rancher who had herded goats in Mexico as a young man.
He stopped one day when I was working on fence, after shooting the breeze he looked at me and asked "do you know how to make a goat fence?"
I played dumb and asked how?
He said "first you get 8' bo'darc posts, dug 2' in the ground. Then you stretch 6' fencing, then you stretch barbed wire every 2' up. Then you stand back and throw a bucket of water at it and if the water goes through, it's not a goat fence.'
And well, he wasn't too far off.

This is a great video. And kinda sad learning that even with the horse mesh I still need electric wires. But I’m not surprised either. Our Percy Island goats can jailbreak the most secure ideas we’ve had to date, including jumping over our current 105cm fence with ease.

Fence prices where I live went up crazy. I'm thinking a lot what would be the best fencing made of natural materials. My current idea is wooden posts with some kind of wood or bamboo nailed across them (not decks or planks, those are crazy expensive too, even if I can harvest and mill my own it makes more sense to sell it or use it for construction). Hope to test some ideas soon.

I glad you post videos like this. It seems like simple stuff but even someone who meticulously plans their life out with overlook these details.

Excellent advice! We have learned all the same with goats & fencing.

There is an in between step between field fence and horse fence. Sheep and goat weave has 4x4” squares. I’ve had excellent success with 6ft tposts and 6 strands of electric.

Great video as always very informative! I have good fencing with parmac solar electric wires also but my neighbors don't and their goats are always out running down the street! The 1st day we installed the electric fence each of the goats got shocked and never got shocked again ! Once is all it took! Thanks for all your great info! And happy New Year to you And your human family as well as your furry family! 😊👍🐐

My dad had goats, he finally gave up fencing them in, and just fenced them out, small good fence around the garden, couple other fences around some fruit trees, etc. goats always come
Home at night, one goat will stay close to home, two will be a little more adventurous, a herd of about 40 will travel about a mile, so you can’t have close neighbours. Not sure how far bigger herds will go?

Field fencing is a horn trap… and it can be fatal. I rescue about 2-3 ferals from our perimeter fencing each year, and feel awful when I find one too late.

I use 1200mm high heavy duty chicken wire. Now my chickens and goats can’t get out and trash my garden.

The best fencing for goats is a river, they hate water, everything else they will get out
