Let me know if you decide to sell seedlings!
I will definitely let you know!
Thanks for the video - great house and great that you've done all that to make it how you want it. Have you tracked expenses for what it's cost to build? And did you use any contractors to help with the work, or did it all yourself? I'd be curious what the total cost is for your place.
Thank you so much! Unfortunately I did not track the expenses, but I would say it cost somewhere between $75k to $125K depending how much you do yourself. We had the smaller shed premade and delivered, the larger shed was built on site, and a family friend helped us bring electricity from the pole to the sheds and run it inside. We also had the plumbing run by the septic guys, mostly because we were trying to get a few basics done before making the move out here. We lived 1.5-2 hours away and it was one of the rainiest seasons we had right before we moved. Completely crazy and hard to get out here. Everything else we did ourselves! Also, we did hire spray foamers to do insulate the cold pantry. I have a cost breakdown of that project! We've talked about "if we did it again" and we've learned so much over the years, I'm confident we could do everything from start to finish, even the construction of the shed! I appreciate you watching!
Love this thank you for sharing
Thank you for watching!💛
This is such an awesome idea! We are a family of 5, and we are making plans to downsize soon!😊
That's so exciting! It's amazing how freeing it can be in a smaller home. Good luck!
Mom and Dad, Your oldest boy is way too old to be sharing bedroom space with the younger kids. They need privacy. Hope you plan to add on bedrooms as those kids get older.
Do your kids have technology at all, watch TV, just curious.
Great question! They have limited access to technology-no personal devices, but we do have a family computer, they do their language lessons and I'm introducing them to editing videos, and we have family movie nights and occasionally just watch to relax. Most of their time is spent outside, working on projects, playing, and just being kids!
Ahhhhh We’ve gotta get started! 🤣 Love the driveby by Z, she is adorable ❤ First time I tried blocking I definitely made them a little too dense! Gotta carve out some space to get some Things started! Thanks for the inspo!
Haha, yes! It always feels like a rush to get started! 😂 Z definitely keeps things entertaining. I told her she looked like Sasquatch. I’m not sure if mine are too dense either, but we already have some tomato seedlings popping up, so fingers crossed! Can’t wait to see what you start growing!
@@tinyshedlife that is awesome! You did a lot of research and probably followed instructions perfectly! I’m not always the best at that! 🤣 You are an absolute rockstar!
🤣🤣🤣
Wow! Seed starting time already! 😮 You don’t get much of a seasonal rest, do you? So exciting to get your hands back in the soil. Zone 6a here - nothing until after Memorial Day. Until then I will live vicariously through you. Great video!
Right?! It always sneaks up on me, but I love getting my hands back in the soil. No real seasonal rest, but I wouldn't have it any other way! Zone 6a definitely requires patience, but your garden last year was incredible-so worth the wait! Can’t wait to see what you grow this year! Thanks so much for watching!
Kiddos to you Darlin... Your doing Amazing! Love your creativity! It's hard when the world passes ya by~ but BE PROUD! For how your fighting and figuring it all out! Be loud n Proud! You keep going and growing ~ all good and great things will come. And someday the memories your creating will make you feel 10 feet tall my darlin~ You are, truly Blessed and too, Amazing ~ keep the peace, good things Do come to those who practice patience and determination!!! You Rock 😉
Thank you so much! Your kind words mean the world to me. 💛 I’m just taking it one step at a time and enjoying the journey. Truly grateful for your support!
Separate bedrooms are a modern, American, upper class phenomenon. Families have done just fine sharing rooms (often including the parents) for thousands of years. Carry on!
You are completely right! I think it’s actually brought us closer and encouraged us to work together. Thanks for the support!
Amazing!!! Thank you for sharing! My husband and I have four children ages 7,3,2, and 8 months. We’ve living in a 2,220 sq foot home that was built in the 70’s for the past 6 months. we’re renting from family, and Ive been ready to downsize since the second week! I’m not trying to sound ungrateful, but I want *simplicity*. We have 5 bedrooms, and 3 bathrooms. We only use 2 of the bedrooms and 1 bathroom. However, if the home was in good condition I’m sure we’d stay. It needs a new roof, new plumbing, we’ve been sick since living here so I know there’s mold. The list goes on. Our goal is to start farming in about five years. Until then, we just want to live in a “regular” home with a nice fenced in yard. We aren’t 100% sure of the location we want to start our farm, and my husband is a highschool teacher so we’re wanting to travel for the next few summers. We’re in the process of buying a home that’s 1,500 sq foot with 3 bedrooms & 1 bathroom. My family is dumbfounded that we would buy a home that only has one bathroom, lol. They can’t understand why we would “downgrade”. I will now send them your video and ask them if my husband and I should do this instead 😄
Love it ! You really know how to use space!
Thank you 💛
Great Job!😊
Thank you 💛
I've never left a comment on a video @tinyshedlife but I feel compelled. I came across your video because we also have a family of seven and are looking to simplify, downsize, put more focus on God and less on possessions and this showed up as a "next up" to something else. I immediately sent it to my husband. We regularly discuss the pros and cons of shared space for kids. I see so many people calling your responses "mentally unstable" and I'm sorry you're experiencing that from the world around you. I see a woman trying to navigate criticism and judgment with passive kindness and not submitting to the need to defend her actions. Let your yes be yes and your no be no and your actions speak for your heart. Every family is different and the need to separate gender is something new to our world in the grand timeline of it all brought on by projections and fears. Is it appropriate in certain situations and times, absolutely! Does it need to be a hard and fast rule, never. I watch my children yearn to be close to their siblings and us. We are meant to be close to one another and be a pack. What you're giving your children is a gift they will remember because it's not done with animosity or the mindset that it's a negative thing out of necessity and scarcity. It's a beautiful connection of family bonds and you will know when the time is right. When we set out eyes to Him, He always provides what we need, not what we think we want or what the world wants for us. Our job is not to impress the world, it's to impress Him. Bless you and your family and keep your kind and compassionate heart as you navigate these responses.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such kind and thoughtful words. It truly means the world to me to hear from someone who understands and resonates with the heart behind what we’re doing. I love how you described the importance of family bonds and the perspective of giving our children a gift they’ll cherish-not out of scarcity but out of love and intentionality. Your encouragement reminds me why I’m on this journey, and it’s so affirming to know there are others like you walking similar paths. Thank you for the reminder to keep my eyes on Him and trust in His provision. Your support is such a blessing!
I have watched SOOOOOO much tiny home content over the years bc it fascinates me and bc I live in a relatively small space, myself (at least compared to the typical American home of today and the last 20 years). But so much of it is just so impractical (although they'll try to convince viewers and themselves that the exact opposite is true). Or some of them clearly cost over $400,000 or more but still only have 600sf - and it's just beyond unreasonable even for their family (finacially and space-wise) and there's no real financial benefit. I love this kind of concept, though, bc it's a simple, practical approach and not just eye candy for the internet. The space seems HUGE and actually seems livable. I really love what you've done. And PS: there are many people who don't have an issue with siblings of different genders sharing rooms together. I'm one of them. People all over the world do it - especially when funds and square footage are limited. What you've done is great. ❤
Here’s a thoughtful way to reply to this comment: Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and leave such a thoughtful and encouraging comment! I completely agree that so much of the tiny home content out there feels impractical or unattainable for many, and I really wanted to focus on something that was functional and realistic for not only our family, but for other families. It means a lot to hear that you see the practicality in what we’ve done and that it resonates with you. And I love your point about how people all over the world make shared spaces work-it’s such a valuable perspective, especially when resources are limited. Thanks again for your kind words and for sharing your thoughts-it truly means a lot to me! 💛
There was a couple on TH-cam who build a home from two shipping containers.
That's awesome! I feel like when we first started this journey I remember a couple doing that.
Absolutely Awesome! I'm off grid in the Hawaiian Rain Forest and it's a great way to live!
Your house is amazing! It's surprising to see how open the floor plan is.
Thank you 💛 I do thinking having "less" rooms creates more room! Thanks for watching!
Love your cold room!! So practical in TX. Being inspired by this, Dean has put in shelving for me in an outbuilding and I am using it for canned storage and paper goods at the moment. Now I can have a year's supply of these types of items. Since there is no electricity in that building, I'll have to use it for that purpose only. Maybe someday soon. Great video as always!
What a great goal! I'd love a year worth of all our general goods. Such good piece of mind. Thank you for always be the best supporter 💛
Really love the way you explain everything that you have done to make everything fit for you all. Great ideas on the build that you all have done to make everything work. Tc have a great day. You r awesome and god bless.
Thank you so much! We love sharing our journey and it means a lot that you' enjoy it 💛 I appreciate your kind words and support.
I don't see much toys 😕 for the kids ❤ but your home is lovely 😊
Thanks for watching! Did you catch the whole video? They actually have bins of toys on the dresser and in the basket. While it’s not a lot, that’s intentional-we’ve found our kids thrive with less and spend more time being creative and exploring nature. We also encourage grandparents to gift outdoor toys or experiences instead of small, mass-produced ones. It works great for our family!
If you move your oats to the far right, being up against another unit might prevent that piece from falling off every time you use it.
Great suggestion. I'm going to give that a try! Thank you!
We have a 12x24 shed that we have a window unit in and radiator heaters during the winter. We actually have it split into two rooms (you can go see in my new pantry tour video from almost two years ago) so I can keep the temps divided for whats needed. We are in west tn
Thank you for sharing about your shed setup-it sounds like a great way to manage different temperatures! Splitting it into two rooms is such a smart idea, and I’ll definitely check out your pantry tour video. West Tennessee can have some challenging weather, so it’s great to hear how you’ve made it work with a window unit and radiator heaters. Thanks for sharing!
@tinyshedlife we also plan to sell this property in 6-8 years when the kids graduate and move our sheds to some land and make them our home so we've been learning lately in areas of concern so we can begin to set them up in a useful way that can convert to a home more easily once we are at that point to move. We have 2 12x24 sheds at the moment. I think we are either planning on connecting them at one end of one to the middle of the other in a T shape OR keeping them separate and building between them like yall did. My husband likes that idea lol. I showed him your tour. We MIGHT have it "figured out" by then....and then it will change and we have to start all over 🤣
I remember you telling me that. It will be a big advantage to have it all planned out at the beginning!
@@tinyshedlife hope so, I'm trying!
My husband and I were able to move into his great grandpas house that he built a couple years ago but if we had bought our own land I would absolutely do it this way!! Awesome job and thanks for the tour! 🤗🙌🏼
How special to live in a home with so much family history-that’s such a treasure! Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words. I’m so glad you enjoyed the tour! 💛
Stainless steel 5 gallon bucket?
Gamma seal on a 5 gallon bucket
Growing up, we would visit our grandmother. Though she lived in the big city, she lived in a large duplex with a double porch off the back of the house. Both were screened in. They overlooked the backyard with huge trees. The trees cooled the yard and back of the house in summer. The upper porch was a summer sleeping porch. Late spring, summer and into mid fall we slept on the sleeping porch. If I close my eyes I can still feel the breeze across my skin, the smell of damp moss and the sounds of crickets. As we woke up, we could hear the birds singing their songs. You would never know she lived in the city. The huge trees blocked the city sounds. I write this, to encourage you to consider a screened in tent or maybe the covered porch with mosquito netting.
Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful memory-it sounds absolutely magical! A screened-in tent or mosquito netting for the porch is a wonderful idea, and I love how it brings that connection to nature while staying comfortable. We have definitely thought about it, but it's been a while since we discussed. I'm glad you brought it up! Your story truly paints a picture of peace and nostalgia-thank you for the inspiration! 💛
Rule of thumb is you are never done with projects in your home until you sell and move out, lol.
This is so true!!! LOL
Would moving the "broken" bin to the center help keep broken piece on?
I'll have to try that! It such a nuisance, but thankfully they still work fine. Thanks for your suggestion.
I bought a 12x32 shed 5 years ago. It sets in the back corner of my son and his family’s land. I’m almost ready to move in. I am 63 years young and I’ve been taking care of my mother so it’s taking me awhile. I love your home, it’s beautiful! I’m going to go back and watch your videos. ❤ from Tennessee!!!
Thank you for sharing your journey! Taking care of your mother is such a loving thing to do, and it’s wonderful that you’re almost ready to move into your 12x32 shed-it sounds amazing! I’m so glad you’re enjoying my home and videos. Sending love from Texas to Tennessee! 💛
Thanks for sharing
You bet! Thanks for watching! 💛
I don't think people are being mean by suggesting that it makes more sense to put the five kids in the bigger space and the two adults in the smaller space. Thats just logic.
There were some nasty comments, but overall I don't think people understand this lifestyle and might be mislead about how the bedrooms showed up on film. We prioritize family areas and outside. The kids change and sleep in their room. Occasionally we he they'll tinker, but for the last part it's a place to sleep. The rooms are within a couple feet of the same square footage. At one point we had our king bed in that room with a set of the bunk beds, plus two dressers. Thanks for sharing your perspective.
I'm just now building my kitchen cabinets. Plywood from a wholesaler was delivered yesterday. I can't wait until I've caught up to your progress.
Wow! That's awesome! I'm sure it's going to turn out great. Slow and steady wins the race! Do you have a TH-cam channel? I'd love to follow what y'all have going on.
Hard work!
Definitely! So thankful for all our helpers!
Nice
Thanks 💛
Beautiful window and plants
Thank you 💛
Just discovered you! I live in North Texas and am hoping to have a root cellar! What do I need to do or who do I need to ask about whether or not we can put a root cellar under our home (before we build)… do you know? Thank you!
Welcome to the channel-thank you for being here! How exciting that you're planning a root cellar in North Texas! Root cellars and basements are rare in Texas due to expansive clay soils, high water tables, and our shallow frost line (5" where I am and about 20 inches in North Texas). Unlike northern areas where foundations must go 5-6 feet deep, making basements more cost-effective, it’s typically cheaper here to build outward rather than downward. That said, I’ve seen one home in Amarillo with a basement, but it’s definitely uncommon! To plan your root cellar, consult a local geotechnical engineer to evaluate soil and water conditions, a structural engineer to ensure the foundation can accommodate it, and your local building department for codes and permits. Be sure to discuss insulation, ventilation, and drainage with your builder for the best results. I hope this helps, and I’d love to hear how your plans progress!
@ How kind of you to share all of this information! Thank you!☺️ It’ll be a while, but I absolutely will keep you posted! We are homesteading in Dublin-Desdemona, TX (we practically have one foot in Dublin and one in Desdemona😆), we also took a shed and are turning it into a cottage while living in it!😅 It’s taking forever, and I’m ready for some normalcy!🤣
Of course! I love all my YT friends! Great job planning ahead and I totally understand the need for normalcy lol
I truly enjoyed watching the replay ❤I'm new to your channel ❤
Welcome! And thank you for subscribing. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 💛
I love it so much!
Thank you 💛
So what does it cost to do a project like this? Rough estimate please
I would say somewhere between $75k to $125k depending on how much you can DIY. I hope this helps!
@tinyshedlife thankyou, I'm very interested in these sheds. Do you have a link or a brand name? Obviously you added insulation and real walls and plumbing. 😎
The kids r growing and will need their own space soon
Boys and girls should e separated at a certain age. Why do you need such a large space? Selfish
I love this video and it is really beautiful with all your family and thank you for all your help and your life .............Thanks
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! 💛
This is awesome! I think kids should have to share rooms for at least part of their childhood. It helps them learn skills they’ll use throughout their lives. This place is clean, has everything you need, your kids read and spend lots of time in nature and are learning to design and build, they have loving parents who spend lots of time with them, there’s lots of room for add ons as the kids get older, including their own tiny homes, etc. This kind of life is what ends up with children becoming adults who are self sufficient, well educated, kind, family oriented, hard working, good communicators, not materialistic, inventive, etc. You stated many times that you are still in the process of building things and changing things you’ve found would work better. I say bravo and heck with the nay sayers! Their kids are probably addicted to their video games and constantly engaged in screaming matches through the walls of their own bedrooms and have terrible relationships with their parents. You’re doing AMAZING!
Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement! We completely agree with you-sharing a room can teach kids so many valuable life skills, like compromise, communication, and teamwork, that they'll carry into adulthood. It’s something we’ve discussed often as a family, and we love seeing the kids learn to navigate and grow in their shared space. You're absolutely right that many adults don’t have their own space, whether it’s sharing a home, dorm, or apartment. Learning to share early can make that transition so much easier and less stressful. And yes, we’re still in the process of building and tweaking things to make life even better for our family-it’s an ongoing journey! We’re so grateful for the life we’ve created, and it’s always wonderful to hear from someone who sees the value in it too. Thank you for your support-it means the world to us! 💛
So awesome I really think u should prioritize getting some of you storage solutions sorted will make a huge difference to the overall feel of your home and functionality like cupboards that close over the freezer and over the laundry will give you a lot of space and put the clutter out of eye sight which will do wonders and sorting out a wardrobe for you and the children will just help with the daily function of your home ❤
Thank you for your thoughtful suggestions! Storage solutions are definitely on our radar, especially the laundry area to help with functionality. We really appreciate your encouragement as we keep improving our space!
Love it!
Thank you 💛
What is the flooring? It looks seamless and so smooth!
It's the floors the shed came with. When we were first planning this I was overly worried about getting "better" floors, but with all kids and dog in and out, I don't mind them for now! I don't even notice the seems anymore. It was a pleasant surprise! We've talked about getting wood planks, nesting them up a bit and putting them in.
Cramming five children in one tiny room, and with a noisy washer and dryer, I can’t imagine how claustrophobic that is!! I hope this is a short temporary set up. Children grow up way fast, they’re going to resent this setup.
Thank you for your concern, but I think there might be some misinterpretation about how we live. The ‘bunkroom’ is just for sleeping-it’s cozy and functional, and our kids love it. We spend the majority of our time outdoors, playing, learning, and enjoying nature, which is a huge part of our lifestyle and values. As for the washer and dryer, we don’t run them at night, so it’s not an issue. Our family is incredibly happy with our setup, and we’ve found that living simply has brought us closer together. Everyone’s journey is different, but this works wonderfully for us.
