This has quickly become my favorite channel for learning Japanese. I love all the dialogue and how Kaname-sensei always manages to put out videos about grammar points I have been eager to learn more about.
I love how straightforward your explanations are. Sometimes I have a vague 'feel' for something, because I've heard it often enough, but it's good to get the specific, correct answer rather than risking my assumption.
I love commenting on these. I think it's like in English when we say, "So...I got this melon. Do you want a slice?" or "So...Tanaka's birthday party is tomorrow. Are you going?"
Interesting point, as "so" generally means that there is a result coming up, which comes from an initial condition. ("I received my passport, so now I can travel to Japan.") However, "so" does not really have that meaning in your example...similar to how "けど" has a general meaning of "but"...but...it's also more flexible than that.
That's a great analogy. We have far more of these kinds of spoken expressions in our language than we realize. These types of expressions can be hard to learn for ESL students.

It's popular lol, Japanese people use this all the time. It's so ubiquitous that after a while I don't even really hear it anymore, I'm just used to it being a part of a very large percentage of sentences.

Oftentimes when it's at the end of the sentence you can think of it as meaning "though". Even in English, "though" and "but" are often interchangeable in terms of meaning, and "though" can be placed at the end of a sentence.
@@Dragon-Believer There is no difference between those. "Dakedo" is just "da" + "kedo". "Desukedo" is just "desu" + "kedo". They're not separate words from "kedo". If you want to connect a noun or -na adjective to "kedo", you have to use "da" or "desu". That's it.

I've diligently studies 日本語 for 6 months now and I honestly have hard time trying to grasp the usage of this 「けど」since the materials I study to only gave the literal translation "but" but doesn't give further explanations if used on scenarios like this. I'm a Spanish native speaker and we often end sentences with "pero..." (But) in the same fashion as japanese do (when it's obvious what comes after that). I think English speakers also do it, so that's the easiest use of けど to grasp intuitively. It's so helpful to know all the other uses amd context for them though. Great video

im a native korean learning japanese, and i have noticed a lot of similarities between the two languages. one of them is the “けど”. this ending is a lot like “~데”. it reflects the same meaning and use of “kedo”.
This is a gold mine of information. Something about your videos is buttery smooth. They're so fun to watch, and I feel like I already understand so much more after this and the んです video.
What I understood from this video is Japanese is easy normally. But its the 200 ways to be humble and polite that adds 5 fold complexity to the language.
And also not saying everything you mean, but expecting your conversation partner to implicitly understand the unspoken parts. This is true even for people not speaking in a polite register, such as a boss.
Wish this channel had been around when I was learning Japanese 20 years ago! It's such natural Japanese - the textbooks and teachers I had then always taught basic masu/desu language, and didn't have time for small nuances like this. I was forever trying to sound less formal, but it's a bit risky in Japan - you never know when you have gone TOO informal! If I'd seen this channel, I could have used more little sentence joiners like 'kedo' and my sentences would have had a more natural flow. But I used to be too nervous to try.

Do you mean the Korean verbal suffix -는데 [-neunde/-nuntey], or is this another suffix that I'm not aware of?

I am a native Japanese and lived outside of Japan for a long time. Now I am re-learning the language with this video..! it's super helpful.!!
What I understood from this video is Japanese is easy normally. But its the 200 ways to be humble and polite that adds 5 fold complexity to the language.
And also not saying everything you mean, but expecting your conversation partner to implicitly understand the unspoken parts. This is true even for people not speaking in a polite register, such as a boss.

Wish this channel had been around when I was learning Japanese 20 years ago! It's such natural Japanese - the textbooks and teachers I had then always taught basic masu/desu language, and didn't have time for small nuances like this.
I was forever trying to sound less formal, but it's a bit risky in Japan - you never know when you have gone TOO informal! If I'd seen this channel, I could have used more little sentence joiners like 'kedo' and my sentences would have had a more natural flow. But I used to be too nervous to try.
