Some Wagons Need Preservation - Some Need Restoration | Engels Coach Shop

  • Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles involves a number of factors that determine when a wagon or carriage is preserved versus being restored. Foremost is the owner's intent for the vehicle and monetary commitment, but also of importance is the present condition of the vehicle in consideration. Weighing these factors is part of the process in determining whether the wagon or carriage is restored or preserved. This wagon will be a mixture of both: the undercarriage will be preserved while the upper sheep wagon body will be restored. This is the start of the process.

That was my grandfather's job at my great grandfather's coach and buggy works. He was a gifted artist as well. His calligraphy was outstanding too. He also was the one responsible for dagger lining the pin striping on all the buggies and wagons. He could do one side and then do the other side exactly the same which was an art in itself. Later he went on to run his own panel beating and spray painting workshop after the motor vehicle supplanted the coach and buggy. My great grandfather became a Studebaker dealer during the transition. They would receive a crate load of metal bits and would have to form all the coach work out of wood from provided plans and specifications. My grandfather had some interesting stories about teaching the town cop how to drive when Grandpa was only 8 years old.

The trick with the paint can is a new one for me. I used ready made paper lips from a paint store on a tip from a professional many years ago. The trick with vinegar and metal filings is something I used when repairing antique furniture. My friend always accused me of cheating, but I did it as a sympathetic restoration to save the pieces. This is the question museums have always asked: do you restore it to working condition, so you can demonstrate it's function, or do you just want to preserve the look? I think what he is doing is the right approach for this project, fix the minimum parts so it can stand on it's own and preserve the wood and metal to stop further decay. It will look fine and the original craftsmanship is on display.
