    Totally agree !! Drawing a still life picture with a single type of pencil is not an easy work ..It's a great effort indeed..

    "It's a very courageous way to draw."
    You know, Davy, I never thought one could encounter fear in being artistic, but the little experience that I have has given me a nasty wake-up call. As you imply in the video, you really do need courage to be an artist and to become proficient in your medium. If you allow fear to seep into your psyche, the artist and his work will show it. At 8:43 is a magnificent piece. EXCELLENT video (as always)..

    These days 50 euros is the norm for a monochrome drawing.Double that for colour work.
    I worked in Rome in 1981 ( spanish steps) and I was charging 15,000 lira. at that time for a portrait.
    A beer cost 1000 lira!
    I was working for 15 beers a portrait...food was cheap .I used to eat near the railway station with the working people::5000 lira for a massive meal with wine
    A kid busker some times came in and sing "bella ciao". Those were the days....

    I noticed at some point you said that the artist isn't using any eraser. well, the pencil she was using was sanguine pastel pencil, even if you had an eraser you couldn't use it because that pencil can't be erased haha I know because I struggle with this in university, if you get one line wrong, you have to redraw everything from the beginning haha, great video mate

    We also use Derwent pencils.Make sure you use a sharp cutter when sharpening your pencils.Some colours are more fragile than others.For example the No47 naples yellow conte pastel is incredibly fragile.A lot of artists use stabilo carb othello which are softer . the range of flesh colours offered by Othello is excelent.

    This is a F. Parto portrait. CANSON paper.....but please take note this is not publicity for any brand of paper.This artist could have worked wonders on any material.(including toilet paper)
    It really is NOT about paper or pencils, it is about sensitivity and observation.
    There are no short cuts..no magic solutions you can buy.Just keep drawing on
    ANY paper.

    I see the point, however as occasional street artist, I'd like to know more about professionists' choice as to make things easier. For example, I see that Montmartre artists use Conté a Paris pastel pencils. I have a set of Derwent pastel pencils and though I like Derwent products I am not very happy with these as they break off easily. Should I try Conte pastel pencils (they are not easy to find in Italy). Thank you.

    4:35 A very "Ingres Technique"

    • @DavyLimvideos
      @DavyLimvideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Rob. Very linear, almost no shading. Ingres was very linear in his approach. Picasso was a master of line, too. Portraitists like Rembrandt used light and shade to incredible effect. Caravaggio's dramatic use of directional lighting is probably the best example of an artist "seeing" in terms of volume. But pure line drawings can have real impact, and volume can also be suggested by line. All these ways of representing reality are valid, and we are seeing more artists experimenting with different styles at Montmartre now than ever before, which is a really positive development.

    A lot of parents had me draw their kids because the photographer couldn,t do the job. For instance, one kid refused to sit up straight and hold still. Another little girl had two diffefent eye colors that no camera could capture. Add to that, an artist can see in 3D whereas a camera has only one plane of focus.

    Davy, I hope to meet you and get a portrait of my sister and me in September. It will be my first trip to Paris and will make a beautiful memento of our time there. Are you always located in the same place at Place du Tertre? Merci

    • @DavyLimvideos
      @DavyLimvideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The standard price is around 50 euros per portrait...the hardest part of this job is getting the first clients to sit down.If you guys can get in early you can kick -start my day.So we can go for 80euros for both of you.This channel is not about ME..it is giving exposure to ALL the artists in the square.Please, if you like my work you can contact me through my web site davylim.com
