I agree that it's important to showcase senior dogs, but they seem to work consistently with North Shore Animal League, which gets puppy mill puppies by the truckloads on a weekly basis. It's important to get them adopted so that North Shore has the space and resources to help the dogs that are harder to adopt.

While I'm happy that you do this, puppies don't have a problem getting adopted. It's the elderly dogs that do. Maybe feature some elderly dogs, who deserve to live out their remaining time in a loving home.

We adopted an older dog from an abusive home. He was so scared of humans at first, but after years of spoiling him (he was old and sad, we had no choice!) Smokey would put his head under your hand and nudge you if you weren't petting him enough!
He was the chillest dachshund I've ever met. Oh, he'd bark of someone knocked at the door and chase after our cats (well, he chased after April. Our old cat, Chet, who had to be.... at least 15 when this happened, took one look at these two new interlopers stealing his daddy's lap, took a few good swipes at them, and after that both weenies would jump off my dad's lap and hide when Chet came in a room! The one time Smokey did corner a kitten that my sister brought home, we freaked out, only to find the poor thing on the ground, clearly terrified, but Smokey was just... Licking it. He'd lick and lick then bark. I don't think he understood what to do once you tracked down your quarry!) But he wasn't whiney or protective like other dachshund 's often get. Smokey didn't care who you were, if you were willing to sit on the couch or his favored chair and just chill with him, he liked you. If you had chicken, all the better.
The vet put him at over 20 when he passed. He went in his sleep, curled up in the big fluffy dog bed that we got him, burrowed deep in the blankets that were all for him. His last few years of life he went deaf and blind in one eye, and by the end could hardly see at all. But he still ran around using his "guide dog" Beanie, and later Francie. He even deaf and blind he knew every time the fridge opened, let me tell you, especially since towards the end he had to take pills and couldn't have hard food, so it was all soft bits of chicken, all the time. Haha, he probably thought he was living the life of a king! We never had him walk up steps or jump, we carried him everywhere, set him down, gave him chicken and blankets and love.
He was the happiest dog ever.
I'm so glad we took him in. The shealter, they literally couldn't find any one to take him. He was old, he'd been in a bad situation, his teeth were already bad and his ears where slightly frayed (frost bite, from the inhumane pieces of garbage that had kept him before), he was a mix of a mini and full sized dachshund - possibly something else in there, he was the length of mini but he had shoulders like a linebacker! - and he was black, brown and white rather than the more classic red. No one wanted this dog.
My parents didn't even want him, at least when they went to the shelter they were there to pick up Bean (Bean was also a mini/full mix, but he was only 3 years old, was the handsomest cinnamon colored dachshund you'd ever seen, and was much more what people think of and look for when they think dachshund. He had some attachment issues after his first owner gave him up as a puppy, then his second family had abandoned him a park in crate with a bowl of water, but not the kind of behavioral issues that might make him hard to adopt by a family, he just needed a lot of attention and people to be around) and the rescue agency explained that "Cinnabun" (Bean) and "Slinky" (Smokey, because he use to literally get on his belly and crawl around when people approached him, he was so use to getting beaten.... God, I hate the people who did that so, so much) were so attached to one another that if we agreed to take Slinky they would pay for all their shots and paperwork. (For the record, Smokey could do with or without Bean. Bean, however, was incredible attached to Smokey. Bean had people and dogs he liked, and everyone else was just an enemy trying to separate him from his Forever Soul Mates... Until you left him for more than two days, in which case he would attach himself leach like to whoever was around and they would become his New Favorite Person.) Of course my parents, who have a long history of taking in animals, and they couldn't say no to this older dog who so needed a home. They only worried because my siblings and them had all met Bean before then, and what if none of us really connected with "Slinky"? But even if we weren't the perfect family for him, we had to be better than no family at all.
Not that it mattered because we were absolutely the perfect family for him. Or he was just the perfect dog.
Of our pets, four have been from rescue shelters, three we found on the streets/homeless, five were adopted at vet clinics/emergency vet hospitals, one was adopted through a rehoming program, one was adopted from a friend who decided it was too much work, and on three different occasions someone in my family has straight up pet-napped a dog from abusive/negligent owners which, to be clear, is not something I personally endorse. Of all those, one was a kitten and five were puppies, while four of the dogs and three of the cats were older (the others being between 2 and 5ish, I'd say). And I can't say there is a mountain of differences. No, okay, I prefer the older animals but that's a personal bias (even the ones like Diesel that my sister found as a puppy, I just think he's chiller now that he's older.) Also, of our thee pets that made it to ANCIENT (though at 17, Diesel is slowly making his way there!), one my dad got as a puppy while the other two were already older. Smokey was "over five" when we got him; not elderly, but considering what he'd been through, more than old enough.
As for Chet, the single most awesome cat to have ever live? Again, hard to say for certain. My dad found him at a rescue center they had gone to looking for a fluffy white kitten my sister had her heart set on. As they were leaving, this black paw just emerged from the bars of it's cage, swatting at my dad as he walked him. My dad turned and there was this cat just staring him down, almost glaring until my dad reached on to scratch at his cheek. There was a sign next to him that simply said, "Last Chance Adoption". My dad asked and was told that Chet was scheduled to be put down later that week. He'd been there for over two years - found on the street, caught by animal control, the vet put him "between 6 and 10" though I suspect he might have been younger but definitely no kitten, plus apparently black cats are harder to adopt out to begin with which seems crazy - no one was interested in adopting him, and they couldn't afford to keep every animal forever. So we agreed to forget about some imaginary white kitty cat and came home with a big old black tom. Chet was the single coolest cat ever. My siblings and I still joke because every other cat after Chet, no matter how much we love them, has been just a little bit of a disappointment. Seriously, no other cat I've ever met had even half as much personality and swagger as Chet. And it's not that he was one of those cats that's cool because he acted like a dog. Chet was ALL CAT, he was also just like.... The MOST Cat you could ask for. We had that cat from the time I was in 2nd grade, until the start of my junior year of university. That cat was nearly of not 20 when he went out one day and didn't come back, and he was amazing for every single second of it. Best cat ever.

Heck, a combo of puppies and seniors would make my day(s)! And where are the kittens and cats? Was a time I was able to reunite lost dogs to owners and have enjoyed four of my own. I love this, but I do wish they’d use adult dogs (1 year or older). They have a much harder time finding a home as they’re not quite as cute as puppies (sort of like baby vs teenager in foster care, everyone wants a baby), but they’re often potty trained and will give you more love than you could otherwise know. My current dog was three when we adopted him and not only was he housebroken, he speaks both English and Spanish and makes a great Denver omelette. My last dog was a year old when I adopted him and I had him for over 14 years. He was deaf and could read lips, walk a tightrope, and always had a Werthers on hand for when you’d had a bad day. Adult rescue dogs are where it’s at.

Stephen & Crew - I adore that you feature puppies in need of homes, but since every dog you've shown has gotten adopted, why not do one of these for older dogs? They often end up at rescue shelters, and unlike puppies not everyone is so keen to adopt them. They are not as cute or young, and sometimes they may come from bad situations. That just makes them more in need of a loving home!
We got my last dog when he was 6. He came from an abusive home and if you tried to pet him he would drop to the floor and whimper and shake. When he past away at 23 (!!) And by that time he would nudge your hand with his head if he didn't think you were petting him enough!
Please think the high number of older dogs in desperate need of loving homes, and possibly consider doing an segment for them?

Agree with all the comments saying that, with this platform, TLS could really help some dogs stuck in shelters for a long time instead of the ones that will be super straight away with or without their help. Could do better.

I am generally pro pet, but where I have ever lived folks allow their CATS outside at all hours, particularly at night. So I could probably care less (most times) about a " rescue " for what I perceive to be quasi-wild animals. But then again, I think things like a Squirrel Rescue are stupid, too.

It took me too long to find this, John Oliver, Stephen Colbert and puppies! They just make me happy. I have a rescued senior Chesapeake Bay Retriever who's brought so much joy into my heart and home I can't imagine life without her. My boys have had three rescue cats. Two were adopted as tiny kitten floofballs who are now 6 and 7 years old. A senior cat getting ignored by people looking to adopt, caught our attention all curled up and alone. He came home with us that day. The boys named him Chairman Meow, claiming something about "world domination disguised in a cute fluffy package." (my boys are interesting, what can I say?) We had 7 lovely years with him and his giant personality confined in a such a small fluffy cat.

A few months ago I found out it closed down when I drove my to see about another adoption and the people who bought the land turned it into a high priced pet hotel which is just all kind of awful. It was one of not nearly as many guaranteed no life ending shelters so I don't want to imagine what happened to the animals that got tossed aside so someone could make money. It's a great thing they're doing with this segment.
