Xanadu was on the 1977 album A Farewell To Kings, this show was recorded in 1981 and was pretty good quality for that time. A user (stickhits) used AI tools and 'remastered' this in 1080p 60Hz - go check it out, it was blocked for awhile but is back up now.

Yup. Everyone's gonna say, and they're all right, you've got to do the entire song 2112. You're missing Neil's fills in IV Presentation, the greatest guitar solo in all of rock in VI Soliloquy, and the spectacular gut punching VII Grand Finale.

'2112' is the entire first side to the album and is a sci-fi rock opera. 'Overture/Temples of Syrinx' is 1st and 2nd movements, followed by 'Discovery', 'Presentation', 'Oracle: The Dream', 'Soliloquy', and 'Grand Finale'. All together, they tell the tale of a dystopian future in which mankind has divided and music and artistic expression has been outlawed by the Priest of Syrinx. The protagonist finds a guitar and wishes to share the beauty of the music he discovers only to be shut down by the priests. He then has a dream in which he sees the ancient past and the "elder race" who fled the planet long ago when the priests took over and still engage in artistic endeavors and expression. When he awakes he becomes despondent at the prospect of continuing in the world he lives in and kills himself. Unfortunately, right after this, the "elder race" returns to liberate the planets of the Solar Federation and assume control.

No need beating a dead horse that you should listen to the whole first side together w/lyrics, to get the story. It's a great story and a musical masterpiece imo. Part VI. "Soliloquy" has one of probably my top 5 greatest guitar solos all time. Just in terms tone and impact alone.

Neil was incredibly intelligent and a prolific reader ( mythology, Sci Fi, philosophy, scientific journals, fantasy, etc.) His lyrics usually reflected whatever he was learning about at the time. Some songs were inspired by a single work, like Xanadu, while others combined multiple ideas/concepts, like Hemispheres.

Drummer Neil Peart was the main lyric writer in the band. And 2112 was inspired by writer and philosopher Ayn Rand. He actually gives her credit in the liner notes.

At this point (from 1975 onward), Neil Peart is the primary lyricist. He is very widely read and you can tell he likes to read Sci Fi literature -- such as as H. G. Wells, Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, etc.-- well as the Classics and many other genres.

These 2 songs are parts of the whole side/song 2112 (pronounced twenty-one twelve). You really have to listen to the whole side to get the full story. It's a masterpiece. Their motivation for 2112 was to give a giant middle finger to the record company who wanted them to release more radio-friendly, shorter songs. In response, they released a record with one song on an entire side, lol. There's an animated video that someone did that accompanies 2112 the song, you should watch that, it's an incredible story. Other songs from this album you should listen to are A Passage to Bangkok, Twilight Zone & Something for Nothing.

Just to add: After the record company (somewhat hesitantly released) 2112 and it proved to be a great success, the new rule of thumb for the record company was to let Rush do what Rush wanted to do. Very few bands received as much freedom. No band deserved that freedom as much as Rush. Just my opinion...

A reaction to the entire first side would have been cool. Maybe you'll check the comments and decide to do that. I'm loving your reactions to Rush & Zeppelin in particular as these bands, along with Pink Floyd, Yes, Elp, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull and of course Jimi Hendrix to name but a few, make up the lion's share of the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times.
I first heard "2112" on 27 March 1976 in Spokane, WA when Rush was the opening act for STYX. I hadn't even heard OF Rush before that night. My seventeen year old brain was rocked to the core. I was hooked by the end of their first song ("Bastille Day"}. They were my favourite band before the end of their set. I almost didn't stick around for SYTX because Rush was so mind-blowing. I'm glad I did, though, To be fair, STYX performance of "Suite: Madam Blue" changed my opinion of them as a band. If I remember correctly, the encore ended with "Light Up", which we gladly did. 🤘😎

The visuals you were seeing was from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". "2112" is a single piece 20-some minutes long and consisting of 7 parts. It's technically a rock operetta. It follows many classical conventions such as an overture consisting of the musical themes throughout, the story being told through song, the various parts all interlinked, and ending with a grand finale. It really should be listened to as a single piece to be fully appreciated (it sounds pretentious, but it's true). The official music video has additional text. While the lyrics tell a story, they're song from two different characters' perspectives. The original album also had descriptive text in the form of journal entries that gave a lot more clarity to the story, and that text is included in the official music video. This piece was also one of the boss sections in one of the Guitar Hero video games, and the three bandmembers vocalized the journal entries preceding each section.

As you know by now... after their first album when Neil Peart joined the band, he was the primary lyricist. He took inspiration from books he was reading, experiences he was going through, and his feelings regarding certain topics (such as being a "rock star"). The man was very private and a quite an introvert.
Oh yeah - and reiterating - listen to this entire side in a single sitting.

They based a good part of the story on Ayn Rand’s novelette Anthem. Part of the plot was the protagonist finds a guitar in a cave and shares it with the priests of the Temple and they destroy it. In Ayn Rand’s story concept of the word “I” is not used and everyone addresses each other as They, Them, Us or We. Only later does the protagonist learns the concept of “I” in an old dictionary. Oh, and no guitars in Rand’s story.

They had one more album on their contract and the record company was leaning on them to make short pop songs and they said no ! If we are going out we are going to do it our way. So they made an epic 20 minute 7 part piece talking about a future one world oppressive government in the year 2112 that bands music, art, and self expression. This was their proverbial finger at the record company and the music industry in general. Rush has been called the high priest of progressive metal.

Neil Peart was into the philisopher, Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged)
SciFi was in its infancy in the eary 1970's. Synthesizers were new.. This song was my first exposure to Rush when I was 12 years old (1978).
Star Wars came out in 1978... The subject matter and "space-ness" of the song (1st side of record) felt completely normal at that time.

The record company asked Rush to record an album of 3 to 4 minute radio friendly rock songs. They sent them 2112 instead. The record company was pissed and would not spend any money promoting it. By touring and word of mouth the album began to sell until it eventually went gold and then platinum. The record company never asked them for 3 minute hits again. You really need to listen to this all the way through to get it. The lyrics were inspired by Ayn Rand's novel the fountainhead.

Yes, whole album...and definitely a re-visit to 2112, but the whole thing this time!! It's a complete story/journey, and it's totally worth the 21 minute ride!!
Side 2 has five incredible songs in it's own right. A Passage To Bangkok, The Twilight Zone, Lessons, Tears & one of the finest album closers ever in Something For Nothing.
This album is nothing short of a masterpiece!
Their drummer, the Professor, Mr. Neil Peart is the principle lyricist. Nerd extraordinnaire, he's big into literature of all types, philosophy, fantasy, sci-fi, you name it. 2112 was inspired by prolific (and controversial) objectivist writer Ayn Rand.
Pretty much all of his words require some form of analysis, or at the very least, observation.

One thing I don't see in the comments is the reason Overture is an instrumental with so many musical changes: It's an actual overture, not a song called Overture. An overture is an introduction, an instrumental medley of the songs or parts of a longer piece. Temples of Syrinx is Part I. Side A of 2112 is a (progressive) rock opera. Are you planning to react to the whole side/story at some point? It's incredible!

  • @correctlyrics
    @correctlyrics 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, a slight faux pas. 2112 is the whole side. But...nothing wrong with doing it in pieces.
The other song on the album would be "A Passage to Bangkok".
Just an idea...when something gets blocked and you put it on Vimeo, just make a 1 minute video for TH-cam telling us that you did the video and it was blocked but we can see it elsewhere. That way, you still have a video here on TH-cam with the title of the band/song that ppl can see and click on. (Then they click the link and watch it elsewhere)
That's what I did for my channel.

From what I remember Neil had been reading books by Ayn Rand the author at the time or before - books like Anthem and Fountainhead etc by Ayn Rand in 1975 - I have heard Neil put his "own creative spin" on ideas and inspiration taken from books he read along with being creative about sci fi stuff - so he was good at like - making up a story - fictional - kind of based on books he read and ideas and just putting it all together - so - also it's based on how they felt at the time - they were going to "call it quits" after the Caress of Steel "Down the tubes" concert tour as they called it - and they told the record company it is our way or no way - Neil was going to go back with his Dad to work at his farm equipment store and stop being a rock drummer - however, 2112 was successful and it spring boarded them to keep on going at that time - they were like the Frank Sinatra of prog rock - it was their way ("My way" - they did it their way or no way - 2112 was "Their last shot and their last try" at that time - and it worked - it was successful enough to keep them afloat and going financially in the business - so they kept on going.

Twenty one twelve is the title. Gotta play the whole first side to get the real effect. One of the best power trios ever.

Yes SalvoG, this was just the beginning!! You must react to the entire 2112 suite (side 1) in one reaction.. You only got a piece of it, although, it was mighty tasty! P.S. Thanks for the link to XANADU ! ☮

Buckle up- and there’s a legit rabbit hole 🕳 here with this band. Check A Passage to Bangkok next, same album. It’s raw and grungy before “ grunge” was a thing- 3 guys, saw them live myself 4 times. 1978, we had very little technology and they did this LIVE. 🤘😎🔥❤️🎼❤️

The CORRECT pronunciation of this album's title is "Two Thousand One Hundred and Twelve." Messin' with ya. The ACTUAL correct pronunciation is "Fuck Me, Where Have You Been All My Life??!!" That's how I felt, anyway, in the 8th grade or so, when my friend Roger played it for me on the turntable in his family's dining room. We geeked out to the lyrics, how Side One was this cool sci-fi story, side 2 had a song about weed, lol, etc. RUSH! ("Twenty-one-twelve" is "correct," btw ;)

Twenty one Twelve. :-) This album polluted my young mind. Hahaha... One of my favorites of all time. So so so good. I could listen to this thousands of times,... o wait,... i have! Also, the entire first side is "one song". Its a full story loosely based on the Book "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. And just listen to the whole album,... side one listen to the whole thing at once basically.

Oh no! Listening to only the 1st 2 parts of 2112!?!? You MUST listen to ALL of 2112! Trust me, its an unwritten law to only listen to 2 parts of it. It's like only eating 1 Lay's potato chip...but much worse! PLEASE, listen to ALL of 2112...you'll thank me later!

Kudos to whoever came up with the inspired idea to pair the song(s) with the amazing cosmic journey imagery of two great sci-films, "2001: A Space Odyssey," and "Contact." For the win!

Your missing 2/3’s of the song hahahaha
It’s 23 min of total craftsmanship and musicianship
If you can watch the comic book version it will help you with the complete story line
Also check out something for nothing an passage to Bangkok
Actually just do the whole album lol lol

Just wanted to add another vote for listening to the whole story (side 1) not just the first 2 parts. I did not make it through the reaction when I realized you only had part 1 and 2.

I've seen them 3 times in concert in Minnesota.. 2112 is actually an album you need to listen to from beginning to end! Each song leads up to the next!

looking thru the comments real quick, nobody has mentioned the influence of Ayn Rand, particularly in this album. Neil Peart was the primary lyricist of the band since his joining the band and he was into all the sci fi writers of the time, but Ayn Rand in particular was a primary source of theme for this particular concept album. Reception to Miss Rand's writings and philosophies over the years has been mixed, but to say the least, today's world rings particularly familiar. I wish Neil were here to comment on such concepts.

My good man, I would like to explain the difference between today's music and yesterday's music. Today's music you feel you have to watch. Yesterday's music there was no way for us to watch we didn't have cell phones or Internet or any of that we put the headphones on and laid on the floor and closed our eyes that is the difference your brain is the greatest imaginator if that's a word or you can watch somebody else's interpretation Rush is not a big fan on this that's why they put washers and dryers up on stage

RusH is composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any the ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands.
Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.

About this song in particular, it is highly influenced by the book "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. The story is similar. There are some other songs by them that are influenced by Ayn Rand's ideas.
