    "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation!"
    7 words repeated 3 times = 21
    "We have assumed control!"
    4 words repeated 3 times = 12
    That was the Elder Race announcing that they'd deposed the Solar Federation, and could have also represented Rush announcing to record execs that they'd assumed control over their musical direction. And here's another Easter egg: 2112 is 9:12 PM in 24 hour format, and 9-12 (September 12) was Neil's birthday. If you want to hear something that will really blow your mind, I recommend Cygnus X-1, Books 1 and 2, whose videos are in a similar format to the one mentioned above.

      Agreed. Geddy said in an interview that it's Alex is responsible for the overall "sound" and feel of Rush. And that he is very unfairly overlooked and underrated.
      Once people get past the idea that "notes per minutes", time changes per song and complicated arrangements are the primary qualities of prog, they can begin to appreciate the subtlety and creativity of Alex. Listen to _Lakeside Park_ off _All the World's a Stage_. It's a simple, slow, beautiful song. And, IMO, it's his arpeggios make the song what it is. It also has some of Neil's absolute best lyrics. In another interview, Geddy says that Alex's arpeggiations are one of his best qualities. Alex's response, a sincere "thank you, eh?"

    • @markjohnson4217
      @markjohnson4217 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What they really pioneered was the cross-over from hard aggressive rock to a more complex, orchestral sound, which was the hallmark of progressive rock in the 70s. YES, early Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, and Gentle Giant were the forerunners of the genre. But Rush were the first to come at it with a hard, almost metal approach. With 2112, in 1976, prog-metal was born...

    • @davep8221
      @davep8221 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All IMO:
      That's pretty much the definition and appeal of prog.
      Yes were all over the map. They had many hard songs, soft, simple, complex, long, short. Nothing was the same, yet it was all Yes.
      Mike Oldfield's music can't be described other than by listing the name of every album.
      Queen did balls to the wall hard rock, the poppiest of pop, torch songs, literal Waltzes, olde Crooner style, and, what's that other famous kind of music will a lot of layered vocals?
      Rush fits right in, by not fitting in.

      @@markjohnson4217 Most people tend to focus on the hard side of Rush. They had *many* "soft" and slow songs. _Rivendell_, _Entre Nous_, _Twilight Zone_. _2112_, _Hemispheres_, _La Villa..., each covered multiple genres. To be fair, most of the _*_well known_*_ songs are harder. When most people think of _2112_, they think of _Temples... rather than _Discovery_

  • @rp9760
    @rp9760 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Maybe others commented... To get the whole meaning of 2112, you need all the song. Go to the studio album. In the liner notes it;s dedicated to the memory of Ayn Rand, author of Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, and , more applicable to 2112, Anthem. Note that Rush also has a song called Anthem. The story of Anthem is close in spirit to the story of 2112. You can read Anthem in one sitting - it's short. Or you can enjoy the story board version posted by the Atlas Society... th-cam.com/video/VYfDxkn-8YI/w-d-xo.html Very cool.

    • @davep8221
      @davep8221 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I remember, only _Discovery_ is missing. The liner notes can help.
      The dedication to [REDACTED] Ayn Rand got them a lot of negative publicity because of her ultra right wing views.
      Neil eventually backed off the hardcore selfishness "virtue" and called himself a "Bleeding heard libertarian."
      Rand would've hated his and the rest's charitable works. For which they all got the Order of Canada.
      Early on, they embraced the few good parts of libertarianism, especially the part about doing things their way... however, they didn't blow up anything.
      After _Fly by Night_, _Caress of Steel_ did very poorly. They called it "the going down the tubes tour."
      They were being pressured for more commercial stuff, like _Fly by Night_. Instead, they said, if we're going out, we'll do it our way. Result: 2112. They guy at the label said "this is exactly what we didn't want." However it worked, and they were left alone.

    I’m regards to your question about why they are so appreciated besides the amazing music. Yes, definitely their story telling. Their lyrics are among the best of any group/writer. Every song tells a story. 99% of their lyrics are written by the drummer Neil Peart. Besides music and lyrics they are also so well regarded because of their appreciation toward their fans and for their humbleness. You’ll not find many more musicians who are so genuine, humble and ordinary people.

    I would suggest listening to the studio version with lyrics to grasp the whole story. The priests symbolize the record company that wanted only short commercial songs and this was their answer basically screw you! The fans loved 2112 and the record company never bothered Rush again about their content.
    Rush are master story tellers and that is part of their appeal along with their incredible musicianship.
    Also, they are funny humble guys that took their music but not themselves seriously. Their great friendship also was also evident in their music and their performances. Rush are their own genre, you can't put them in a box. Prog Rock was my generation's classical music. Yes,
    longer songs would be great.
    Other Songs I recommend are The Fountain of Lamneth
    The Necromancer
    Cygnus Book 1 and Cygnus Book 2 (Hemispheres)
    for more of their story telling songs
    also Natural Science which is one of my very favourite songs by them. Cheers

    A big FU to the record company who had asked for shorter songs! For me, the draw the is lyrics which are deeper than any other rock/prog band, the musicianship (I mean, Alex, Geddy and Neil together? it's like the stars aligned), and their friendships with each other. No drama, no splitups. I like that they evolved musically and were always working on something new. If you watch their video that illustrates this story it helps you understand the concept.

      This is true and they didn't care about what the record company wanted. They were going to do it their way no matter the outcome. And Billy your wrong. This song sent Rush into stardom. They didn't need radio play. Record sales is where they survived.

  • @jimpemberton
    @jimpemberton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Neil Peart was not only an amazing drummer, but he was also widely read and a bit of philosophical type. He was Rush's lyricist. So that's why you get some depth to their songs and coherency to their later albums.
    2112 was written to spite the recording industry. Their label wanted them to do these cute little songs thinking that they were more marketable and worked better for radio. Rush had a larger vision and talked them into letting them do a kind of rock opera on this album. So the rock opera they wrote was pure rebellion against their industry overlords and 2112 sold like wildfire despite not fitting the typical pop and rock radio format very well.

The mellower parts is Rush talking to the record company and the louder in your face parts is the record company telling them to go F themselves and stop annoying us. SYNOPSIS:
    2112 is the year the story is set in. The narrator is an average guy living under the yoke of an oppressive regime run by the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx, who rule over at least a handful of planets (The Solar Federation) with an iron fist. All learning, music and art are strictly controlled by the priests. The narrator thinks this is ok until he happens upon an old guitar hidden in a cave. He learns how to play it in his spare time, then presents it to the priests thinking that they'll praise him for his wonderful discovery.
    His hopes are dashed as they admonish him for clinging to "ancient ways" and tell him that his newfound "toy" was part of what brought down the ancient people. The priest in charge then smashes the guitar at his feet. Distraught, he is visited in his sleep by an Oracle (or was it just a dream?) who shows him the world of this ancient, elder race who are making their own music, art, literature, etc. and he realizes that he cannot go on living his "cold and empty life". In true Shakespearean ironic style, he commits suicide, only for the ancient "elder race" to return soon after and destroy the Temples of Syrinx and the Priests therein. That is what you hear at the end: the elder race is announcing to all of the planets of the Solar Federation that they have returned, assumed control, destroyed the Temples, and that the citizens are now free to live meaningful lives filled with art, music, and knowledge.

    Abbreviated live version. I was fortunate enough to see them play the entire suite live on the Test for Echo tour, 1996. The story itself borrows heavily from a novel called "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. And the Rush song Anthem derives from her novel "The Fountainhead." The voice at the end signifies the return of the Elder Race, which he saw in his dream, learning, growing, and preparing to reclaim their home.

    This live version omitted parts 3- Discovery and 5-Oracle:the dream. My guess is they had to keep to a specific time limit and these two parts weren't as easy to reproduce at that time, they did play it in it's entirety on the test for echo tour in 1997. The story is inspired by Ay Rands book "Anthem" but completely conceptualized by Neil and then they wrote the music to accompany it.

    This is how I first heard "2112" - 27 March 1976. Almost exactly three months prior to this performance in June '76 at Toronto's Massey Hall. I saw them in Spokane, WA as the opening act for STYX. I had never heard of RUSH before that night but they were my new favourite band by the time they finished "Bastille Day".
    Imagine my surprise to learn that the studio version of "2112" had bits that they had to leave off the live version. They were an opening act for the majority of the early years and as such would be limited in the time they were allowed for their set. Not to mention the fact the record label had told their management (Ray & Vic) that they needed more "radio friendly" material and when they got "2112" instead they gave RUSH next to zero support for the subsequent tour. When the slbum turned out to the be breakout record it was it gave the band the freedom to pursue their musical ambitions with minimal interference.

    Ya need to listen to this studio side. The song is based on "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. They just switch it to a guitar he found and tried to show it to the Priests at the Temple. Anyhow... listen to the full studio version. Some of it is just the sound of a stream and him plucking a couple notes on his "new found wonder". I can see why they skip chunks for live. Oh and to add on, Rush was freakin amazzzing in concert. Fortunate to have seen them 11 times. Rock on.

    There's SOO much to this story! It is based on a book by Ayn Rand. I don't remember the title. The song takes place in a futuristic world (the year 2112) where the "Preists" of Syrinx control EVERYTHING. ( kinda like our government!) A boy discovers a relic from the past under a waterfall, a guitar. He presents it to the Preists, and they smash it. That's where the line, "another toy that helped destroy the elder race of man" comes. And YES, do the rest of ATWAS!! The first track is my birthday song, "Bastille Day." July 14th. About the French revolution, and storming the Bastille. "Bytor And The Snow Dog " is awesome too. The battle of good vs. evil. You'll LOVE IT! Trust me. Have I let you down so far?

    What sets Rush above and beyond all other rock bands (besides being virtuosos) is that other bands make rock songs and they may experiment with rock operas. Rush makes OPERAS of ROCK (not rock operas) and they experiment with rock songs.
    But if I were to put them in a genre it would be their own, it would be Progressive Electro-Metal Rock.

    Rush is a very professional as well as intellectual group. They have said in interviews the continuity and so much time working together had encouraged them to push their musicianship more expected they could actually do.Neil claim it was the glue to being together over 40 years.2112 written from the book Anthem by Ayn Rand. Read Chapter 1 pages 17-3 You’ll see nails inspiration.

    I hate to say this....but Rush seems more popular now than then. They had a niche audience...a lot of them...but a special breed. Rush is intelligent rock. It requires some kind of depth and mental awareness to really appreciate their complex compositions. And Geddy's voice was not the usual. I have been a die hard fan since the 80's. But they were around before then. Once I became aware of them and in a more mature place...that was it. I've seen them live countless times. They were fantastic in concert. Just those three guys and their instruments. Humble and grounded as individuals....gracious and thankful to their fans. We all just had a good time and you always left feeling great. Not angry or hardened or wasted...just happy to be alive. I miss them. But they deserve to retire. And Neil's loss was a stomach punch out of left field. What a talented trio of master musicians and best of friends. I am thankful they are still being discovered and appreciated. I think they probably fit more into today's world considering the technological place we're in and the mindset of the youth today. Only....they are learning what it means to hear real intelligent composition, master musicianship and the deeper creative spirit human kind is capable of. .
    Thanks for your reaction and appreciation of this stellar work by Rush. This album saved them after the record company threatened to cut them off they didn't produce more commercial radio friendly songs. They did what they wanted and the rest is history. Seems like this is cut up a bit. Listen to the album.

    2112 was written as a farewell album because the recording studio wanted singles and shorter songs and their manager agreed. The band said fuck that. They wrote 2112. The radio stations played it and BAM.
    Neil said at that point they could literally do whatever they wanted.

    You know we are excited! Rush gets the blood pumping lol! Progressive/Metal. I've always loved Rush. They have said that in the beginning there were only males at their concerts. I for one would have been at every one of them lol. Neil was a master storyteller. I prefer the longer versions.

    You should watch the official Rush illustrated lyric videos for 2112 so you can get the complete story. 2112 was my first exposure to Rush, while with friends at a University dorm room party during the 1977/1978 school year. This totally blew my mind!

    Really enjoying your Rush discovery. Regarding 2112 (pronounced twenty-one twelve) I recommend you listen to the studio version... there are some extras in that version that paints the picture better and find the video with the comic book art with it which helps paint the picture of the full story. Once you do that you have officially gone down the Rush rabbit hole.

    We are right at the dream is still in my head. And you had to stop it and realized you were missing some stuff. This is why you absolutely need to listen to the studio cut first always. You're missing huge chunks of the story. But that's what they had to do to abbreviate it for a live performance and they were playing for their fans so the fans like me who saw them on this tour, could fill in the blanks, laugh. But for a first time listener and you're just losing so much of it by going with the live version first. But anyway it's still impressive isn't it? It's amazing. I just hope on your own time you go back and actually listen to the whole side of that album which yeah it's like 18 minutes. But who cares it goes by really fast and it's like a good novel, when it's over you don't want it to be over. But yeah never listen to those people that say you have to check off this live version first. That's absolute bullshit. Always listen to the studio version First because that's what the artist wanted and that's what we all grow up hearing. I never saw any of this live shit other than the physical times I saw them live until like 2 years ago. It just wasn't available so unless you want to one of their live shows like me and a whole bunch of other people you would never even know. So you're way better off always doing the studio cut first but anyway I'm enjoying the hell out of this. I can tell you're a treat by the stuff and it fills my heart with joy. Happy holidays on that note, pardon the pun.

  • @markjohnson4217

    Rush's success was almost completely due to the loyalty and undying commitment of their fans. Mainstream rock fans didn't care about lyrics or epic concepts, but maybe enjoyed the loud aggressive sound and the concerts, so they were cautously accepted by the AC DC, Van Halen, Ozzy and Aerosmith people, but no hit singles until the 80s and no bleached hair, eye liner or purple spandex, sooo...they were never really the market darlings of rock. Rolling Stone magazine despised them, Kerrange, Cream and the rock press in general were either luke warm or coldly mocking. No-one carried them except the fans back then, and that did not include their girlfriends!!

    2112 is the story of a young man who lives in an oppressive society, without music and so forth. He finds an ancient artifact, a guitar, and discovers it makes beautiful sounds. He shows it to the Priests of Syrinx who dismisses it telling him it is a toy that helped destroy the elder race of man. Long ago their society was free but it came to an end after a conflict between opposing factions causing great destruction. The more totalitarian faction took control under the banner of the red star (album cover) and banned music and so forth claiming it was one of the reasons for the destruction of their society. The opposing faction fled the planet becoming exiles basically. The priests destroy the guitar and tell the young man to stop his foolish whim. He leaves dejected and depressed. Thinking there is no hope, he takes his life...his life blood spilling over. This sparks a revolution causing the exiled faction to return. There is a battle and the priests are overthrown; the rebellion assumes control.

    bobkitten81 has it right, the record company wanted shorter songs and Rush wanted to do what they wanted so they came up with this concept. The last sentence We have assumed control repeated two more times was I believe the bands way of telling the company that the group was going to do what they wanted to hell with the company.
