    I love how all the mystique and finesse Easy Andy had throughout the whole gun selling process is completely lost the second he starts offering drugs for sale, in Travis' eyes he was the holy iron monger providing him with the weapons he needed to embark in his crusade, but after getting the guns from him he transforms into just another scumbag dealing poison.

    Such a great scene on so many levels. Scorsese at his very finest. The movie, and Travis, are escalating here and the viewer really sits up and takes notice. A few things:
    1) The workaday way that Andy handles the gun sale is super fascinating to watch. Even though he is selling firearms he treats it like any widget. He knows his products and is detail oriented.
    2) His youthful appearance and haircut belie the criminal nature and severity of what he is doing
    3) The banal sounds coming trough the window serve as a counterpoint of the seriousness of the gun transaction. The shot of the gun pointing at the two women under the umbrellas is really chilling and amplifies this effect.
    4) The way he has the holster ready (to sell, not to give, to Travis) shows how much he orchestrated everything on his end
    5) When he has the gun sale closed, the effortless manner in which he switches to drug dealer gives the scene an entirely deeper sense of menace. Andy will sell anything to anyone, no matter how dangerous or harmful.

    • @agentanaranjado
      @agentanaranjado 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Beautifully stated. It also must be noted how Travis’ approach to the transaction turns truly transactional as soon as Andy begins offering other illicit goods. A common degree of indecency led them to that room, but their psyches diverged when he brought up drugs and illegal cars. Travis maintains some sort of sick code in the face of luxury commodities.

      Andy is a good man. He simply recognizes valuable commodities and respects people's rights to freedom. It's not the sellers problem what you use the shit for, that's all on the customer. Andy is simply a businessman who treats this stuff like any other product. He is a smart businessman that values personal freedoms.

    We'll always have people like this-whether selling firearms or drugs it doesn't matter how many laws and restrictions are made but it inhibits people that believe in law and order from being able to defend themselves. I agree with Ice-T stating that the Second Amendment is a last line of defense against tyranny. I can go to jail for just wanting to buy an automatic without a special license yet cartels are armed with military issue weapons. I wish people would quit falling for the government's endless 'we need to make it safe for our children' pleas while chipping away at our freedoms and still failing miserably at 'protecting' us. Their solution is always more laws and restrictions as an answer to their own failures. It isn't about safety it's about using it as a smokescreen to establish tyranny. I like the analogy of a frog will jump out of a pot of boiling water-but put one in cold water and slowly dial up the heat and the frog doesn't realize what's happened until it's too late.

      @@chrisjimenez603 As far as American made 9mm pistols, they weren't as common then as they are today. S&W had their model 39 and 59 pistols, and Colt had their 1911 patterned Commander. Much of the 9mms were either Browning/FN Hi-Powers, Lugers and P38s that were G.I. bring backs, Beretta M1951s, and maybe a smidgeon of French MAC Mle 1950 pistols. Revolvers had their preeminence right until the mid to late 1980s, which by then, more American companies were putting out newer 9mm designs, more foreign made designs were being imported and their manufacturers began setting up production in the US, and 9mm ammunition was improving in quality.

    The true Apex of the movie, and my personal favorite scene. I get ASMR every time I watch it. Easy Andy is the consummate salesman. He manages to sell 4 guns to Bickle, a guy who has no need for one gun let alone four, and absolutely no idea what to do with them. Andy is like Mephistopheles to Bickle's Faust. He offers Travis the key to the door through which he can escape the soul-crushing loneliness and monotony of his day-to-day existence, but at the cost of what remains of Bickle's sanity and stability. Bickles access to the guns becomes his sole focus, as he has absolutely nothing else to focus on. His isolation and the bitterness caused by his rejection by society as a whole and women in particular warps his sense of purpose, causing him to want to lash out. This angst is tempered by his ingrained sense of moral obligation and duty, and his hypocritical passing of judgement on the vice he sees around him (he frequents porn theaters daily and pops pills constantly), the rest is history.
