Virgil's job interview...."Have you ever operated a high speed computer?" "Yes, yes I have." "Where was this computer?" "My aunt has one." This is his funniest movie for sheer laughs. He may have made films that were overall better but none funnier. Music teacher: " He had no concept of the cello.....he was blowing into it.". Hilarious stuff!
The writing and narration are brilliant. The use of a narrating voice, other than Woody's was really what gave the movie a whacky documentary feel. Older folks, holler out if you think about the "Gub" scene at your bank. You know someone n=must have tried that back when the movie came out - I'm sure.
Oh that's hilarious, I have not watch this one in decades I've got to see it again! One of my favorite films starring him. I also really cracked up watching Zelig.
I worked at subway with a guy who'd sing 'gonna go to Mississippi' and I just knew he had been in a chain gang, so I called the police and they took me to jail for being predjudice
I remember watching my dad listening to visiting insurance salesmen and encyclopaedia salesmen back in the 70's, it was probably the only times I ever actually felt sorry for my dad,😂
“Gonna see Miss Liza…gonna go to Mississippi…gonna see Miss Liza…” The audience must have thought he could never make two movies this funny. Silly audience.
“What we got here, and, you know, I’m not saying anyone is at fault because I’m sure you’re a lovely human being and I can see you know how to polish a gun-you might want to work on the shoes, by the way-but, and I’m being completely honest here, I think we have some sort of failure to…well, you know…communicate.”

My very first Woody Allen movie. Saw it in college. Hilarious and the documentary style was innovative at that time. I once stole the joke “Any questions? Do you think a girl should pet on the first date? “ I was at a book reading by an author who was an attractive widow and the audience was being very insensitive and asking a lot of personal questions about her marriage and dead husband. The author was getting very uncomfortable. Thinking of Woodys joke I raised my hand and asked “ Do you believe in sex before marriage?” It was so inappropriate that she laughed and the questions stopped. (She thanked me later)
Remember that time Woody was sleeping with his 15 year old adopted daughter and didn't get arrested and also tore his family apart? That was hilarious.
I'm 59 and thought this was stupid and never understood it back then and the feeling is confirmed, not a grin not a chuckle could have been written by 6-year-olds maybe the shadow whipping was clever Feh
Also ‘I was a fugitive from a chain gang’ starring Paul Muni. They parodied the scene where the guy missed when trying to to use the sledgehammer to take Virgil’s chains off
These early Woody Allen movies are forgotten
by the mainstream but they’re brilliant.
100 % agree. Bananas.
WRONG....not evenly remotely funny. And, so dated it's beyond belief that anybody would have invested in it.
@johnanthonycafe2993 "Sleeper" was always my favorite, all his oldies were hilarious.
@@alienasoul That's your opinion.
@
You must point me to a comparable body of work by a woman or do you just hate Woody Allen ?
Getting locked in solitary with an insurance salesman..ohhhh man I'M DYING..HYSTERICAL!!
"They punish him often by locking him in a dark closet. When they are really angry, they get into the closet with him."

Jeeez that is bad
Is this what happened to woody haveing sex with under age girls ?
or a clergy man

"Food on a chain gang is scarce and not very nourishing. The men receive one hot meal a day: A bowl of steam."
I think I saw this movie over 40 years ago and I still remember that line. I burst out laughing.
"A bowl of steam."
he's locked in a sweat box with an insurance salesman. cruel and unusual punishment.
Its even worse when you let them into your house.
Yeah, true. But! It could've been with Hillary or Nancy Pelosi. 😱😭😱😭
Or Don Jr.
Allen had a bit in his standup up set:
“I know the meaning of despair. I once spent an evening with an insurance salesman”.
boy, it's the hardest.
5 minutes of my favourite movie moments ever
The narration is delivered by the great Jackson Beck, veteran radio actor whose authoritative voice lends a mock solemnity to the proceedings.
Thanks. I was wondering who that was.
"Gonna go ta Mississippi.......gonna see Miss Liiiiiiza!"
Reminds me of a scene from Family Guy
Pissisippi for sho going to pissisippi
I saw it in the theater when it came out. My first Woody Allen movie.
At first I thought WTF, but then totally got into it 😄. Big fan ever since.
Poor Dylan,
This and Bananas are classics. Dr. Strangelove is also a classic ahead of its time.
I've never forgot this scene. I've seen this on tv,...40years ago (?)

"I worked in a office."
"What kind?"
"Rectangular."
I think Bananas was better
@@RonInbarI go back and forth on that…For me, it’s Take the Money, but those Howard Cosell bits in Bananas are gold.

Friggin classic movie !!
The sledgehammer bit 🤣🤣🤣
9 stars out of 10. I deduct one star for skipping the opportunity to steal the other guy's sledgehammer.
Made me laugh out loud
I used to ask my wife for a bowl of steam as a joke. She did not find it amusing.
I remember how funny that movie was now I'm going to watch it tonight
This and Broadway Danny Rose. Real comedy genius
Don’t forget “BANANAS”!
And Sleeper. I think I broke a rib laughing the first time I saw it.
5 minutes of gold.

i can't think of a more severe punishment than getting locked in a sweat box with an insurance salesmen.
don't think it's still allowed nowadays.
His first movie was his funniest. James Anderson was the chain gang warden. He also played Bob Ewell in To Kill A Mockingbird.
Anderson was terrific in this picture.
His first movie was a take on James Bond. Casino Royale.
@ Allen only performed in "Casino Royale". Two years earlier, he both wrote and acted in "What's New, Pussycat?"

Not to mention his rewriting the script dialogue to the Chinese take on Bond titled "What's Up, Tiger Lily"
The life insurance salesman bit was brilliant. Classic WA humor.

if you liked this, watch love and death. my favorite woody allen movie
Cool Hand Woody.
“Gonna see Miss Liza…gonna go to Mississippi…gonna see Miss Liza…” The audience must have thought he could never make two movies this funny. Silly audience.
no me rei tanto en una pelicula ...gracias Woody
His funniest movie
I like the scene when Woody eats 37 hard boiled eggs as a challenge. It's one of the finest moments in cinema history.
Got to like the Spanish subtitles.
He writes and acts in 2 movies a year
And there is a whole archive of movies he wrote that were not made
Man to Woody. 'I lost my leg in the War! 'Woody - I hope you find it!
I always wondered what this movie was having seen it when I was young and never catching the name.😊
Paul Newman is fantastic in this!
Nobody uses the word "pet" in that sense anymore.
Especially with their own step-daughter, but then again he was an Epstein friend.
Like working at Amazon, or for Musk!
'Bob Ewell' actor from 'To Kill a Mockingbird'

Yes! I saw him. He's STILL hard not to HATE!
OMG 😂😂😂❤❤❤

Interesting to see a New Yorker like Woody Allen joke about one of the most brutal situations in our unresolved racial past.
Don't think I'd follow that "take off for Florida" advice these days.
This movie is about wage slavery in the USA.
Get real, please.

Allen used to be funny - now he is a creep.
This really isn’t funny, especially in racist America
Is this supposed to be funny? Maybe it was almost 50 years ago, but i doubt it, very distastful.
Why? It's clearly making fun of the old road gang movies & the movie Cool Hand Luke, that came out the year before this movie.
Also ‘I was a fugitive from a chain gang’ starring Paul Muni. They parodied the scene where the guy missed when trying to to use the sledgehammer to take Virgil’s chains off

lmao , a bowl of steam
@Anne6621: And thanks to that deadpan delivery, that line is just as funny now as it was in 1969.
I heard Woody Allen married his step daughter
