From before I can remember, I was raised and brainwashed by Baptists. Regarding Tim's comments beginning at 1:11:23, I did not have to look at tribal cults in the middle of the jungle to find religions and cults that were "Oh, that's so weird." They were right there in our midst in the form of Methodists, Jews, Catholics, Episcopalians, etc. As a Baptist, I looked at them and thought how weird and misguided they were. After spending the first 30 years of my life as a devout Baptist, I became an atheist/agnostic and now look at the Baptists as the weirdest of all--even surpassing jungle tribal cults! My biggest regret in life is that I was raised in such a narrow, closed society that instilled such nonsense in me.

Yes, I was raised Baptist in the Bible Belt. Very indoctrinated. I attended a Christian School and even obtained my bachelor’s degree from a Christian university. I was in my thirties when I stopped believing that God existed. It takes quite a lot of time and work to deconstruct. Long process! So glad to be free from the fear of hell!

One underlying, yet often over-looked aspect of religion, is the inherent external control mechanism that it is. Instead of encouraging people to think for themselves, religions of any type induce people to believe what they are told. It discourages inquiry and personal explorations. Political dogmatism is a very close, unthoughtful, unexamined vehicle for mind control. They both scare me equally.

Tim, I'm with you. I still want to live forever. The biggest grief since leaving Christianity, for me, is losing eternal life and the possibility of being with loved ones again. I hold out hope that there's some kind of consciousness that lives on. I don't want to just disappear into darkness and cease to exist.

@@carolwilliams8511 Its sad that people have been so conditioned to believe the only two options are Christianity and Hard-headed materialism. I left Catholicism as a teen, passed through Buddhist/Eastern thought/ Studied Western Mysticism etc. Until finally I settled at just "spiritual but not religious" after having a few OBEs (out of body experiences) as a result of a deep meditation practice early on in my college years. In this OBE, I witnessed my friend walking down the path toward me dormitory, Immediately woke myself up and ran to the window, and there he was, walking right as I had seen while "away from my physical vehicle". I recommend watching NDErs talk about their experiences. and there are various forums dedicated to those who explore and have had "nonphysical experiences" without the baggage of organized religions. Belief/Faith are unnecessary when direct experience is possible, that includes Faith that the world is completely material, although scientists have known we're not material for quite some time (hello quantum physics).

Eternal life. I just admit that I really, really, really do not want to die. Even at 73 I continue to enjoy life too much. I continue to appreciate what I have. I fear that when I die, I will miss out on the party. I really want to know how this or that will turn out. I really want to see this or that happen. My damn brain will not let go of the feeling that when I die, I will miss the party.
But when I am dead, I will cease to exist and so will not know.
Paradoxically, as a kid and young man I was actually afraid of death, because how did I know with 1000% certainty that I was saved. Maybe, at the judgement, Jesus would really say "I never knew you". Or as the bible says - "Narrow is the way". (These days, I also understand that according to some theologies, God may have predestined me for hell, all for his own glory. No matter what I think, God may put me in hell to illustrate his power and his glory.)
Hence, even though my brain will not let go of the fact that I will miss the party (assuming ice ages, meteor strikes, world wars and other nasties will not happen), I agree with Krystin. Let the younger generation have their go at making their world. When my time is up, I will try to step off the planet with grace and understanding. Shake a fist at death but be stoic about it.
And yeah. We are not living in ancient Israel, any more than we are living in ancient Rome nor medieval Europe.

I’ve not read all the comments, I may be repeating someone else’s comment. As a believer, which I was, one thinks, that the Holy Spirit confirms the accounts of the old and New Testament. They are taught, and they believe, that the Holy Spirit confirmation is what ties everything together. I greatly appreciate the work that you do. Thank you for all that you do. It’s because of you and others like you that have educated me, caused me to have the confidence to ask questions, and be able to let go of the dogma that I was taught. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your material.
I do appreciate the sensitivity to recovering from religion. It has had trauma for me. And the realization that what I was taught, wasn’t real, it was and still is an unraveling of so much of who I thought I was.

Unfortunately the true meaning of Jesus's teachings were turned into rhymes and riddles that confuse Bible scholars today. Jesus taught how to have life on earth and have it more abundtly. One scripture stands out to me. Jesus said, "depart from me for I never knew you." He meant, because of your egotistical mask you hide behind, I don't know the real you.

My family already acknowledged that they believed because it was convenient and prefer not to delve much into my reasons because they don't want to risk their faiths. This has lead to them not pushing anything to me anymore. And I also don't want to break their heart because losing your faith isn't easy for everyone.

*The Enuma Elish would later be the inspiration for the Hebrew scribes who created the text now known as the biblical Book of Genesis.* Prior to the 19th century CE, the Bible was considered the oldest book in the world and its narratives were thought to be completely original. In the mid-19th century CE, however, European museums, as well as academic and religious institutions, sponsored excavations in Mesopotamia to find physical evidence for historical corroboration of the stories in the Bible. ***These excavations found quite the opposite, however, in that, once cuneiform was translated, it was understood that a number of biblical narratives were Mesopotamian in origin.***
*Famous stories such as the Fall of Man and the Great Flood were originally conceived and written down in Sumer,* translated and modified later in Babylon, and reworked by the Assyrians ***before they were used by the Hebrew scribes for the versions which appear in the Bible.***
***In revising the Mesopotamian creation story for their own ends, the Hebrew scribes tightened the narrative and the focus but retained the concept of the all-powerful deity who brings order from chaos.*** Marduk, in the Enuma Elish, establishes the recognizable order of the world - *just as God does in the Genesis tale* - and human beings are expected to recognize this great gift and honor the deity through service.

I am an African man and had been a Christian Bible puncher for over a two decades and have had nasty brushes with bigotry, racism and white monopoly nasty experiences in church and social places. Then I had a hard look at what Christianity is supposed to promote - love, happiness and a total acceptance of humanity that, in the end would end up with me in that starry, golden celestial place called heaven. But the treatment that the white folks, both at church and social setting continued to be toxic as beliefs and cultures of both Africans and Europeans entered the ring and each one expected to have its own assumed as Christian. Obviously, the European narrative under which Africans were subjected to, prevailed, for most of the time and the African cultural practices continued to be trampled upon. This became very problematic as I could not transform who I was and be something I naturally couldn't be. I ended up wearing two hats and two faces - act white when with whites and African when with Africans - schizophrenic. But it is the social and political setup that pissed me off to the point of wondering who this God was who relentlessly promotes my being subjugated and trampled upon, everywhere. I wondered if "whites" were human given the stance and holier than though attitude they had and still have to blacks and if we all are human and therefore Christian could a heaven be our common destination? The open colonialism, neocolonialism by Europeans and the West in general left a lot to be deciphered. Why would white Christians not stand up to their governments who are stark racist toward blacks - everywhere! Why would white Christians not feverntly stand up against white monopoly as they do against LGBT or environment pollution! Why are white Christians not become "your brother's keepers" and become vocal against such stark racism against other races? The theft and mayhem, the rape and the lies, the diabolic plans of relentlessly killing whole communities in the Global South for their resources and the plans to wipe whole countries off the map like in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Africa (France and USA) being the elephants in the room) I began to wonder who and what race, Adam and Eve were and if these two had been white folks, how did some of us emerge? If there were people before them, were they human and if human, why and how did these two suddenly become the first?

I mean, it's not wrong, Christianity is no different from all the other mythologies out there, all of which used to be religions in the past before Christians arrived and said, "Nope that is wrong we are right so accept our belief."
Eventually, Christianity will also jon the ranks of myths people used to believe in, and the sooner the better, cuz right now it's the cause of so much harm and evil in our world.

Anything anyone tells you about God is immediately false.
Even to say God is spirit is false. How do you know? Is God merely a spirit? Certainly not. He is all, therefore any specifics about him are incorrect already in premise let alone in specifics.
Especially when someone claims God literally did something for them or told them something. A supposed all powerful being would have a literal infinite number of better ways to reveal something such as making us all born innately with the understandings we need of him.

    • @statesman6379

I can't tell if you're an atheist or not. You say, "Anything anyone tells you about God is immediately false" and then go on to say that God is not spirit and that he is all things ever told and would never need to speak.
Well, God is spirit. John 4:24 tells us this. And, fun fact: you too are spirit. Your body covers your spirit. In fact, you are not your body, rather, you are your spirit/soul. When you pass away, your spirit/soul will leave your body and you will continue to always exist as your spirit/soul. Where your spirit/soul will be for eternity is determined by whether or not you've accepted by faith Jesus' payment on the Cross for your sins.
We have specifics about God because God did speak and He instructed those He spoke to to write down His Words to preserve them.

God has never been seen and never spoken what would an infinite being ever need to do or speak? Your God by your own bibles definition is ALL. He is all things noun and verb. Therefore he can never as an abstract entity ever interact in his own creation like some genie. He is you. He is me. He is the process of time. He is everything, he is nothing, as the Bible says He just IS (I AM)
Jesus himself prayed his disciples understood this. That he has learned he was ONE with the Father. And that they should learn they too are ONE with him.
Jesus talked about your and your religions idea about God. He told the Pharisees who followed that kind of God vipers. He called their God the enemy, even satan. Jesus father is not your biblical God.
Also, reading bible verses at people doesn’t make your philosophy any less silly. You have the opinion that God is spirit and the opinion you are a spirit in a body. You are entitled to that opinion. But your opinion is not reality.

I had one Christian friend whose sister treated her like crap because she wouldn't obey they commandment to honor thy mother and thy father. Their father abused her so she didn't honor him. The sister treated her horribly because of it. How messed up is this? You think she would do this if she knew it was all based on stories? It's no different than Apostles dying for the same God and Jesus. Christianity is what doesn't make sense, once you actually spend the time researching and using logic, common sense, and intelligence. They are perpetuating the myth because of their belief in it. Spreading the "Gospel", living out the scriptures in their daily lives, and forcing their beliefs onto others in society who want nothing to do with it.
