    As someone who has legitimately had sand thrown in his eyes as the opening move of someone jumping me, this tactic is absolutely brutal. Nobody expects someone to throw sand in their eyes, and once it hits your eyes it sticks to them and you're immediately blinded. No pain, only darkness. You go from being prepared for a fight to wondering if you're going to live in an instant. It's terrifically effective, highly recommended if you have to defend yourself.

    The trouble is that you can't really test what effect sand in your eyes would have without _actually getting sand in your eyes._
    Also I think that a much more important thing to test would be how easily you can actually get your hand into your pocket or pouch while someone is trying to stick a sword in you, which was barely touched upon. If you can't _get_ your sand without compromising your defence, that seriously undermines how effective it is as a defence strategy.

      I wonder if that's why he recommends pocket sand for a mugging. The idea is that they pull out a sword and you say "No no, let me get my money!" And then you pocket sand the crap out of them.

    • @Lockz1111
      @Lockz1111 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you need to actually get sand in your eyes to test how effective it is, we already know that sand can scratch the lenses of your eyes and cause people to go blind, everyone has also probably felt something hit them in the eye at least once and know the instinctual reaction we have to drop what we're doing and immediately cover our eyes, the only thing that's really in question is how easy you'd be able to access the sand

      @@jamiewarren2307 that's what I was thinking too, even in a more modern setting :
      some guy mugs you, you reach for your "wallet" and POCKET SAND ! then you run away.
      basically equivalent to how pepper sprays are design to be used, reach into your bag, and pull out the pepper spray.
      in countries like mine, were pepper sprays aren't really all that legal, and guns are extremely rare (even amongst muggers) it might actually make for a decent option.

      A lot of areas like training grounds or arenas for fighting actually used sand on the ground (I mean, think about how much you see it for like, Roman gladiator stuff)
      There's not much fumbling to just shift down and swipe a bunch of sand up and toss it in that scenario.

    I knew this sounded familiar--back in the "Deadliest Warrior" days, in the Ninja episode, they tested the "black egg", which was an egg-shaped package that was filled with powder intended to blind the opponent for an escape.
    Quick check on Wikipedia, seems the term "metsubushi" (eye closers) refers to any number of blinding powders or devices to deliver them, including a brass box that you could blow into to spread the powder.
    The powder, the article suggests, was primarily composed of ashes, mixed with ground pepper, dirt, flour, mud, and sometimes finely ground glass for extra cruelty.
    It would be interesting to explore the different kinds of metsubushi and their comparable efficacies. If we look at this from an adventuring perspective, we should also consider ease of make and multifunctionality--it may not be prudent to have a pouch dedicated for blinding sand, but perhaps ashes are worth it because ash can be used to make impromptu soap (Jason Kingsley has a video about this).

      @@Cavouku ninja’s were just farmers originally who didn’t like the cruelty of some of the Daimyo and Shoguns at that time and would ambush their Samurai as they passed by the rice fields or whatever else they were farming. Which it turns out farm implements are pretty effective weapons. Eventually it evolved into the clans, upgraded farm equipment to actual weapons, and then mythical art of ninjutsu but they were basically just assassins with some family based martial arts training to do said assassinations. That show was crap for any sort of historical accuracy. Cause obviously a ninja would just find some time to kill a target in this case a Spartan when they least expected it. Also the Spartan being killed would be more then likely a captain or just someone who was further up the chain of command for a hit to realistically be put on them. Even if they Spartan just so happens to catch this ninja in the act of trying to take out a captain or senior officer the ninja would just gtfo. The Spartans also used spears so getting sand in someone’s eyes whos a good couple yards away with even a little bit of wind would be impossible. From what I've heard, in feudal japan when Ninja (or Shinobi) were more prevalent and doing the infiltration and espionage work, they had small eggs that were carefully hollowed out, filled with pepper juice or ground up shards of glass, and then painted black to make them more difficult to see. The idea was if they were caught and were close enough to whomever saw them, they'd toss these eggs into their eyes, giving them a chance to escape. It may not be sand (though if the had access to it they might have filled the eggs with them too) but the idea is basically the same. Distract the enemy enough to give yourself an advantage, be it to kill them or to escape.

      Yes, that isn't true. 'Ninja' weapons like that and shuriken, caltrops etc were just in regular use by samurai. Ninja generally didn't carry weapons as spies, those that were assassins tended to use multiple very large calibre and long arquebuses (almost cannons, ambush from prone). Yes, Japan had the first snipers. Oda had half his retainers blown apart by near misses.
      Samurai really did NOT fight fair though.
      Ground up glass is essentially sand/quartz anyhow. Glass being melted sand after all. Though, asia didn't really have glass which makes it more dubious. Plenty of sands and nasty volcanic rock ones at that.
      One used in the west and probably the east is quicklime, used in whitewashing (ground and baked seashells essentially, certainly commonly used) famously it permanently blinds you if you get it in the face, but it'll burn the hell out of your lungs and everything else too.
      Its been made for as long as humans have been around. Easy to mistake for ground glass though i suppose.
      You could even use it in the medieval period to heat your food without a fire.
      To rip some wiki examples;
      In 80 BC, the Roman general Sertorius deployed choking clouds of caustic lime powder to defeat the Characitani of Hispania, who had taken refuge in inaccessible caves.[23] A similar dust was used in China to quell an armed peasant revolt in 178 AD, when lime chariots equipped with bellows blew limestone powder into the crowds.[24]
      Quicklime is also thought to have been a component of Greek fire. Upon contact with water, quicklime would increase its temperature above 150 °C (302 °F) and ignite the fuel.[25]
      David Hume, in his History of England, recounts that early in the reign of Henry III, the English Navy destroyed an invading French fleet by blinding the enemy fleet with quicklime.[26] Quicklime may have been used in medieval naval warfare - up to the use of "lime-mortars" to throw it at the enemy ships.[27]

    Pocket sand, maybe not much of an advantage. Try pocket CRUSHED GLASS! It's very similar in the texture of glass if you crush it hard enough but if it gets into someone's eye, they do not miss a swing OH NO. Since it's like powder, they instinctivaly go and try rubbing their eyes, which is when the horrorshow begins and they just keep rubbing tiny glass shards and sharp as needles and blades even more deep into their eyes and literally shredding their cornea. That, is one of the most sadistic things one can do in a fight.

    Shad also hit on a great point too regarding the pepper spray and it plays into that flinch response. I was once upon a time law enforcement and for most people being blasted with OC spray instantly caused them to go on the defensive, but there are cases where they attempt to fight through it.

    I know it's effective because if you looked at ninja fighting style they basically upgraded pocket sand. They would crush glass into a fine powder and then poor it into an egg shell. So during a fight they would just crush the shell on their hand and throw glass powder straight into samurai eyes. When they would go to rub their eyes it would actually cause even more damage. Funny enough this is where the whole ninja escape using a smoke bomb came from. Except it was glass powder and very brutal.

      Can't they just throw the egg at the face?
