"New school" mechanics are intimidated by drum brakes because they've never seen, let alone worked on them. A close friend of mine is the "automotive technology" (or something like that) instructor at our local vocational high school. He stopped by my little shop a few Sundays back as I was getting set to do drum brakes (all 4 wheels) on a 68 Chevy C-10. He actually only stopped to drink a beer and shoot the breeze until he saw what I had in the shop. He then proceeded to pretty much demand that I bring it to the school so that the students could do the work. You should've seen their faces when they got the tires off! The looks were priceless! It was even better when my friend and I showed them how to get the drums off. They were dumbfounded by all the springs etc. Since the truck is getting a nut/bolt restoration, it took them a couple days, under my friends careful supervision, to do the job, but, they did it right and learned a good lesson. Now, they all want to participate in the rest of the project!

Keep doing the brake videos (especially drum brakes). You may not realize it, but there is so much we learn by watching how you approach a fastener or overcoming problems. Things like tool choices, accessing/approaching fasteners, overcoming adversity, or even just installing fiddly springs add to our knowledge base. What you sometimes do automatically is a revelation for some of us. Thank you for what you do.

Excellent! Glad I never worked in rust country (but now live there...). A thought... back in (stone age) high school auto shop, our instructor often went on over the importance of giving calipers a couple of brass mallet raps before the last bleeding 'pump' cycle/s... in order to knock loose 'cling on' bubbles within said caliper. Always did it out of habit, sometimes even with master, wheel & slave cylinders; but don't know how much good it actually does. Got some odd looks from other techs too. Cool videos, Thanks!

Well, I mean no slight to Eric when I say this, but anyone can do it with a lift, a big air compressor, and all the right tools. I mean, spring pliers. What shade tree mechanic bothers to get those, right? We're all out here on our bad knees on the ground fighting with a pair of regular needle-nose pliers trying to fight those f#$_ing springs back into place and by the time we're done (if we haven't already called "uncle") we're ready to beat an automotive engineering to death. It's for reasons like this that I'm honestly surprised it's not easier to find a place that rents lift time and air tools by the hour. I mean, I get the liability issues but I bet some smart entrepreneur could make it work.

    • @snoopdogie187
      @snoopdogie187 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Drum brakes aren't hard to do. I've done them before I had a cell phone. At least now you can take a picture to see how everything goes back together.
No one to show me how to do them, no special tools, barely had a jack. Pair of pliers and some sockets/wrenches and you can fix them.
You may mess up the order the first few times, but after that you start to get it.

Me again, 5 yrs later. I just did rear drum brakes on a 1997 F-150 and followed instruction video of taking the shoe off along with the parking break lever by removing the cable from the bottom of the lever. The cable ended up going way up into the spring and it took all I had to compress that spring far enough to clamp some vice grips to the tip of the cable, then I had to put it into the groove on the Parking lever. Got it done but it took two of us, one to pull the lever and spring so that the other person could pull the tip of the cable into the slot. I think next time I'll follow your lead.

I thought mine was crusty! My Ranger (2004) had the luxury of living ts first seven years in a southern (Alabama) environment. 2011 to present it has resided in Ohio. 2011 til today has taken its toll. Went from near perfect to bed and floor boards mostly rusted out among several other rust related issues. I hope to move back south someday! Eric O, your talents would be extremely welcomed down there, but I don't think you would know what to do with the majority of vehicles having little to no rust!

goenitzlopez Yep, they're still popular. They're cheap and last a long time because they don't have much braking power. The 75/25 distribution of braking usage makes rear brakes last 2-3 times as long as the front brakes, so it's not too big of a deal unless you tow or have a performance car.

Good video, very interesting, FYI when I got out of high school I went to work at a Oldsmobile/Datsun dealership servicing used cars that were traded in, and one time I had a Ford Granada to service and I noticed that the brakes felt funny when I pulled it in the shop so I put it on the lift and started checking them and I started the car and put it in drive and gave it a little gas then pushed the brake pedal and the rear wheels just kept turning no matter how hard I pushed, the car had about 75K miles on it and the brakes were brand new, so I got my boss to pump them up and I did not get one drop of fluid so I cracked a line coming out of the TEE on top of the axle housing, still no fluid, so I loosened the flexible line going into the TEE and got fluid, so I took the TEE off and it was never drilled out at the factory, no rear brakes ever, very interesting, I showed it to the mechanics in the main shop and they got a kick out of that, I just wanted to tell you about that experience,
    Thanks, Dave

I know this is a year out but I use a large cotter pin or split pin opened so you are only using one end. That can be pushed into the window and gives plenty of room for the spoon because the split pin is flat. You can slightly bend the pin if needed to push on the adjuster brake. I have been using the same one for years. I wrapped electritions tape around the other end so It gives me more material to grip, also so I know it is for brake jobs. I used to keep all my brake job tools together in a plastic tackle box so I knew exactly where all my stuff was. This was back in the days where I was going to college and used to do brake jobs on the weekends for extra money.

    Eric,
Regarding doing brake videos - you should never stop doing them. I say this because brakes and rotors are parts on a vehicle that have a service life and then they fail. When they do, people start searching out how to change them. The braking system on a car may be "routine" work, but it's no laughing matter nor is it something to be taken lightly with haphazard attention. Those brakes are what save your life every day. The average Joe who has some tools and is mechanically-inclined, can change his own brakes and take comfort in knowing that everything is done exactly as it should be. You show us how to do it the right way, why it is done, and that is invaluable for the simple guy like me who wants to do his own work to ensure its done right. The vast VAST majority of shops around my area are just throwing the crap on there as fast as they can with zero attention to detail so they can turn & burn on the next one. You are one of a select few mechanics I've ever seen that treats his customers cars and trucks as if they are his own. The pride you take in your work is nothing short of impressive, and heartening to see that there are still men around who do honest work for honest pay. You have saved me so much money over the years in diagnosing my problems on my vehicles and fixing them myself - especially brakes. I've followed your method to the T on my brakes since 2015 and have never once had a brake failure, a seized caliper, uneven pad wear, a scorched rotor, nothing. Permatex Extreme, fluid film, good hardware, etc. Good to go. Thank you Eric!

An old Rolls Royce trick for installing cotter pins that are captured in the castle nuts. Clamp pin ends in vise and twist the eye end 90 degrees. Makes pin ends perpendicular to axle when folding over. Makes a neat installation. Learned this from RR machinist from England.

I've used liquid electrical tape a try too, up here in upstate NY. I use silicone caulking now. It just pulls off in one piece, whereas the liquid electrical tape would sometimes leave pieces of itself on the zerks and other fittings. I heard it's an off-roaders trick to caulk the fittings. Also heard they do the same thing with off-road military trucks. Not sure if any of that is true however.

I like the older "square body" trucks. Simpler to work on, SAE tools, and lots of room to work with. I have a '90 Ranger, and a '79 GMC "Heavy Half". Love them both cause they are PAID FOR, and have never seen salt.

I put a few squirts some regular engine oil in my never sneeze when it gets low and clumpy. Works well and doesn't thin it out as much as WD-40 ...which seems to evaporate.

Hi Eric O you make some of the best auto mechanic videos I have seen. I am a little older but came up into the automotive/heavy equip. business as you did instead of working for my dad I worked for a caterpillar dealer for many years as a field service tech. I would classify you as one of the best at your craft. The other day I saw one of your videos about a 4 wheel brake job on a ranger with flames, as I to am a stickler for cleanliness and proper lubrications for brake system assembly you did everything by the numbers and then it happened... I thought I saw you remove the brake shoe actuators from the wheel cylinders and they were wet with fluid just inside the dust cover boots. To me this would mean that the cup seals inside the cylinders are bypassing the fluid beside the pistons past the dust boots and into the drum where fluid will collect in the drums wet the shoes and lock up the brakes any time you touch them. but I don't remember seeing new or rebuilt wheel cylinders go on the truck. Am I wrong or did I miss something?
    Really like your videos Mark...

I love bleeding brakes with my wife. It is the only time I can tell her what to do and get away with it. (up-down-up-down, Turn to the right, turn to the left). My wife is great like yours at helping out when I need a 2nd hand while working on cars. I Liked how you showed the use of the hose instead of letting the fluid run over the caliper. That is how I was taught to do it. Just something about brake fluid on everything that bugs me. I use a can and a hose. Anti-seizure has got to be one of the worst things to get off everything you don't want it on. I was wondering why you don't spray down the parking brake cable with your fluid film. I bet off camera you did. Funny how the Brake clean makes no sound when it is empty. A very hand feature only your brake clean seems to have. Your father/ daughter ride along at the end made the video. Keep em coming.

You had said that the Auto Adjuster worked on the parking brake, and so the adjustment was not getting done due to no one using there parking brakes. Well I had never heard that the parking brake did this. I had always been told that the Auto Adjust was ONLY when you went in Reverse and stepped on the brakes. So I "Googled" this!! And this is was I found:The adjustment takes place when the vehicle is in reverse and the brakes are applied or when the parking brake is engaged. So I have learned more at my Age of 61. And watching the South Main Auto Repair Channel.!!

I've had good luck installing the star wheel and the lower spring and then hanging it on the backing plate. It kinda holds things together when attaching the spring retainers and then the shoe adjuster and spring part. Plus it kinda holds the spreader bar for the parking brake. Kind of a bottom-to-top approach. Then you don't have to muscle the star wheel in last. (or the lower spring). Great vids Eric!

In 1995 I bought a Ford ranger and I had nothing but front end brake problems with it. The dealership did 5 brake jobs on the front. The truck kept pulling to the right when I applied the brakes. I got rid of it when it had 49,000 miles on it.

I never get tired of your brake jobs Eric! Hell everything I work on for the most part has air brakes so it's nice to see this. You put out quality work, I bought my truck used and whenever I fix something on it I see the handiwork of the previous mechanic and it bugs me because zero care was taken, wish you were the guy who worked on my truck before I bought it!
