Salvatore Mineo Jr. (January 10, 1939 - February 12, 1976) was an American actor, singer, and director. He is best known for his role as John "Plato" Crawford in the drama film Rebel Without a Cause (1955), which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the fifth-youngest nominee in the category.
Mineo also starred in films such as Crime in the Streets, Giant (both 1956), Exodus (1960), for which he won a Golden Globe and received a second Academy Award nomination, The Longest Day (1962), John Ford’s final western Cheyenne Autumn, and Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971).
On the night of February 12, 1976, the actor returned home following a rehearsal for the play P.S. Your Cat Is Dead. After parking his car in the carport below his West Hollywood apartment, the 37-year-old was stabbed in the heart by a mugger who fled the scene. Police pursued leads but assumed the crime to be the result of some sort of "homosexual motivation". Following the police investigation into the crime, a young African-American pizza delivery man with a long criminal record was arrested, named Lionel Ray Williams. Williams was tried and sentenced in March 1979 to 57 years in prison for both killing Mineo and committing ten robberies in the same area. Although considerable confusion existed as to what witnesses had seen in the darkness the night Mineo was murdered, Williams claimed to have had no idea who Mineo was. Corrections officers later said they had overheard Williams admitting to the stabbing.[36] Williams' wife later confirmed that on the night Mineo died, he had come home with blood on his shirt.
Mineo was buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.
Sal's remains one of the saddest and most senseless Hollywood deaths to date. A fine actor and a good guy, taken way too soon. RIP

Actually,he was sentenced to 51 years and only ended up seen in 11 (1979 until paroled in 1990) to be sent back for violating his parole.

It was apparently a failed robbery attempt. The guy didn't even know it was Sal Mineo he stabbed until later on.
Yeah. When he said the guy bragged, that's usually why. They find out later they killed someone famous. They want to share the other's glory which they didn't earn.

RIP SAL MINEO…what a sad and awful waste of potential…as I understood it, he’d had a dry spell of getting work, then seemed like he was on the verge of a comeback, he was getting good feedback from his plays, then some malignant zero takes his life…that man should have gotten the death penalty for killing Sal, they didn’t play around back then, none of today’s death row where they get a different colored prison uniform but will die of old age before they get around to them…

I heard it was an underground parking lot but my perspective of previous info stated was a bigger shopping center area near where he was in rehearsal. All in all a huge loss for movie goers such as myself. Horrible tragedy!!

Sal was just on the verge of Homosexuality really starting to be accepted, I remember in 1978 it started to not be a big deal if you were gay. It is so sad he died this way. Wrong place. Wrong time. So sad.
Sal actually pronounced his last name "men-nay-oh" according to his long time friend Alan Alda, but Sal never corrected anyone for mispronouncing his name.
He was an italian descent,his parents were from Sicily Italy. In Italy..they pronounce it as MI - NE - YO

When Natalie was a toddler, her mother went to a psychic who warned her about letting her daughter go in dark waters- that it would be her end.
Natalie actually had multiple incidents with dark water throughout her life after this psychic warning- starting with a part in a movie as a young child in which she wasn't told she would have to jump from a surface into dark water- during the stunt she ended up falling wrong and breaking her wrist in the process. This would cause her trauma since her wrist didn't recover correctly and left it "disfigured". During events and movies she would wear a bracelet on that wrist for the rest of her life to hide the bump.
...And I believe that incident is actually what lead to her having a body double for stunts. Which would be why your step-mother was her double ☺

Another version of the story had Natalie’s mother still living in Russia with Natalie’s. half-sister, Olga and still married to her first husband. She supposedly went to see a Gypsy fortune teller who told her she would die in dark water. When she heard about Natalie dying, she supposedly said: ‘The wrong one died’. As far as Natalie’s wrist, someone in the movie set that day told her she should take Natalie to see the onset doctor, but she refused because she didn’t want Natalie to lose the role.
Hi Kat. Could be? My stepmom told me Nat was 17 and Faye was 21. They had /have SAG laws about minors working late or too long days. I think a minor can only work 6 hours broken up. so they used Faye for night scenes. and also there was insurance coverage which demands a stunt double / stand in for anything dangerous.

I remember his murder as a big news story. Even though Sal Mineo's career had slowed down he was still a familiar face on TV in the early-to-mid seventies.
I visited this site a few years ago while staying with a buddy in Hollywood who lived a few blocks away. There are also a lot of Doors/Jim Morrison landmarks in that area too, like the Alta Cienega Hotel which still has the "Jim Morrison Room" where Jim used to crash.

Oops I was wrong. His stabbing was a result of a robbery but he definitely called himself bisexual because gay wasn't accepted back then.
Interesting very good content here. A tragic and senseless death concerning Sal Mineo. Poor guy, to be attacked and stabbed to death. Anyone who murders another person never should get out of prison. Another example of our justice system failing.

I just watched East of Eden, then Rebel for like the 10th time each. I had heard Sal's tragic murder was solved, glad I found this. Natalie ofc was murdered at least by involuntary manslaughter by her two-timing bisexual husband who used to beat her up in their Beverly Hills home. All in the book: Goodbye Natalie Goodbye Splendour by Marti Rulli which is why they finally changed the drowning cause of death to 'unsolved' or whatever but RJ did her in. Dean was to me the greatest actor ever and only once did Donald Turnupseed, the driver of the car that hit his Spyder ever make a statement on it. My theory is Brando the Mafioso was so envious of Jimmy that he had him taken out. I dont believe the official story that Jimmy was driving either as after he got the ticket it's likely Rolf took the wheel, Jimmy's body was on the other side of the car, passanger side, when they pulled him out. All so tragic, all gone too soon. Thx for the upload.

There must be a curse on “Rebel Without a Cause”. Both stars were killed tragically. Very interesting video though, l can see the comparison of the photos and your locations. He was probably trying to walk around to the front of the house, through the alleyway, when he was confronted and attacked.
Sal is buried in Gate of Heaven cemetery in Hawthorne NY....matter of fact I visited his grave yesterday....was there visiting a friend and stopped at his grave
