  • Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Philies was struck in the face by a 97mph fastball pitch during a recent MLB game against the St Louis Cardinals. Harper was forced to leave the game but with an injury like this there is definitely concern for facial trauma. In this medical breakdown we'll review what happened and talk about facial trauma and the anatomy of the facial bones.

Can you tell me if doing GHD sit-ups, like you see primarily in the sport of CrossFit, is likely causing trauma to the brain? If so, could this trauma lead to CTE? I don’t want to put athletes, especially the younger ones, through further brain trauma than that what comes with their sports. Thanks in advance.

You should take a look at Zach Greer’s injury from 2016. Greer is a lacrosse player in the NLL, and while playing a game for the Saskatchewan Rush that year he had a very unfortunate 2 seconds- got sucker punched after laying an illegal hit on an opposing player. To make matters worse, as he was going down from the punch his helmet came up uncovering his face, and he fell right into the path of the ball that his teammate had just shot- hitting him dead center in the face. For context, the current World Record for fastest lacrosse shot is somewhere between 127-131 MPH, although that’s a bit of an outlier in all honesty. That being said, in game shots from Pro’s such as this one are more typically around 90-110ish MPH. If I’m not mistaken, Greer finished the game. I think it would be very interesting to hear your perspective as to how this wasn’t a much worse injury. Thank you for your videos!

I thought blood would be pouring out of his face. Orbital/face fractures can look pretty gory at times

97 is pretty much physically impossible to identify and make the move to duck. Especially because a fastball "chases" you. Starts out around your chin and then have some rise and run on it. Hell, 85 is hard enough

Maybe it's not quite the right content but the youtube channel Kentucky ballistics host nearly died when his 50 cal exploded by chance. Many injuries. Would like your thoughts.

So many facial injuries in baseball when the batter can wear a helmet with a face shield or face guard, kinda like the nfl

He was wearing a guard on the other side of his face, but turned the wrong way. It is counterintuitive, but sometimes you have to give protective equipment a chance to work.
