  • It's the most infamous punch in NBA history, but this is the side of the story explained like you've never heard before! Rudy Tomjanovich sustained serious injuries after he was punched by Kermit Washington during a 1977 NBA game. It was reportedly so bad that Rudy T could taste his own spinal fluid. In this video we'll break down what actually happened and just how serious these injuries really were.

People forget that punch nearly killed Rudy. The aftermath was bizarre, too. The punch was part of a SNL skit and Kermit caught a lot of heat afterwards. It was crazy. On the plus side, the NBA got a third referee and started to regulate fights out of the game.

I'm guessing Kermit Washington also suffered some psychological effects of being a pariah and laughingstock. A pariah that his own team's front office stopped talking to him and other teams didn't want him except Boston. Eventually after his Boston stint, his reputation was somewhat repaired and found other NBA jobs. Then he spent years trying to look good, and now he's in jail for embezzling money intended for kids.

@@de132 your comment was just the one I was looking for. I wish they would have kicked him out the nba but it certainly still sounds like he got what he deserved. What's crazy is I don't even necessarily hitting someone is unforgivable even in the NBA. But I do think that when you do something no matter what you need to own up to the consequences. Most people have been in fights and is scary to think that freak accidents can happen. So I'm surprised to read that the guy seems to have been a bad guy in life in general. Hope someone punches him the same in jail.

Hey Doc, I have a quick question.. As a Paramedic in Baltimore I have seen plenty of injuries and I'm wondering why a doctor would even ask a patient if they "taste anything?" though at hopkins I hear the doctors always ask this depending how conscious the patient is when we bring them in. It was my understanding- or at least what they taught us in school- that if you see any CSF coming out the ears and 'Battle signs' or ' RACCOON Eyes' you should immediately think that they will be able to taste any type of spinal fluid, is this wrong? Anyways, love the channel I'm all caught up on all your videos keep doing what you're doing!

That was the dirty '70s, where fights happen almost every night. Kermit Washington was the designated enforcer to Kareem for that struggling Lakers team, a la Dennis Rodman to Jordan. Kermit was actually tussling with Rockets center Kevin Kunnert when Rudy T. ran toward them to stop the fight. His sprint absorbed Kermit's sudden swing (that of a 6'8" 230 lb. dude made of pure beef) which caused this life-threatening injury.
I brought this injury up to Doc Brian because in a previous video he said that the worst NBA on-court injury was that of Shaun Livingston's. I disagreed and brought up the infamous Punch.

I was thinking about the cranial bones from this video and the acronyms we used in both of my A&P classes (PESTOF and Ethan’s Fried Spinach Pasta Tempted Octavia). I love your videos and am by no means telling you what to do. I just know they really helped me learn quick and it would make your videos make a lot more sense to some people having that extra tool that would take that long to explain. Thanks for all you do on and off screen, God Bless.

many years ago my father had suddenly developed a twitch on the left side of his face. He needed surgery to correct the problem. But while he was recovering in the hospital he noticed that his nose was running. It turned out to be spinal fluid leaking into his sinus cavity.

Can I request a video in to possibly the worst injury in English soccer, the double compound fracture suffered by David Busst (Coventry vs Manchester United in 1996). It was so bad the Utd keeper, Schmeichel, vomited upon seeing the injury and it took 10mins for staff to clear the blood off the pitch with water and sand. It ended Bussts career as he then caught MRSA in hospital!

My neighbour runs a washing machine. It sends pulsations (vibrations into my body) mainly into my head.
Causes my brain to feel hot inflamed almost a headache (I never had headaches before) I feel the temple viens near my front of ears pulsating hard during the spin. Is that an increase in blood pressure in the brain.
I usually have very large pupils (parasympathetic nervous system?) but now my pupils are small, even in dull lighting.
Sometimes I feel a bit weak in the legs.
Pulsation are like deep internal vibrations in specific part of my body.
I don't feel the pulsing in the rest of my body. Although sometimes in my chest.
How can my head blood pressure Increase but not in the rest of my body. Have you ever heard of such a phenomenon.
I am scared I get cerebral ventricular enlargement, dementia, brain aneurysm or IQ problems. Please advice or even make a video?
My mother in the same house feels the vibrations downstairs but in her lower body.
I only feel these blood pressure sensations in the house nowhere else.

Was the fracture from the punch or more so his head banging off the hardwood?

    • @jonjetmore4018
      @jonjetmore4018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Very likely the hardwood. To fracture a skull with your bare hand is difficult because the bones in your hand are significantly weaker than a human skull. The punch probably broke his nose and jaw, and the fall cracked his skull.
