Brilliant review Ollie :) I love this episode,t he romantic drama between The Doctor and Renette is amazing (and the Doctor-Rose romance doesn't effect it for me, though it may have been even better if the Doctor-Rose romance wasn't in this series). My only complaint about this story is Rose and Mickey take a backseat (which is especially disappointing for Mickey as he's only a companion for 4 episodes in this series (6 if you count the finale)). Besides that, brilliant! The spaceship in the future with Clockwork Droids trying to repair it contrasts with 18th Century France perfectly and the reveal at the end is beautiful, the cast are outstanding especially David Tennant and Sophia Myles. The Clockwork Dorids are great villains and the production is amazing. Everything fits into place wonderfully with this story. And Arthur The Horse should be next companion, love him, and the jokes with him. Steven Moffat IS an amazing writer when he puts out amazing scripts like this, his other RTD era scripts, The Eleventh Hour, The Day of The Doctor, Heaven Sent and more, but unfortunately because of his mediocre and bad scripts and his time as a showrunner has given him a bad reputation. But I think it's important to acknowledge the amazing stuff he also did, because he did just as much good as he did bad. Case and point, this story with a DEAD EASY 10/10. See you next time for The Cybermen's epic return to the show.
Thanks Nick for the great comment. I guess you like the story a tad more than me but I just can't give it a 10/10 . Yes Arthur the horse is great lol imagine The Doctor riding Arthur throughout all of Series 2 haha. I don't count Mickey as a companion in Army of Ghosts/Doomsday cause he wasn't travelling with The Doctor and Rose at that point. Yes I cannot wait to talk about Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel which brings back the Cybermen in a BIG BIG way as we know :)
Awesome review Ollie, glad you really enjoy Girl In The Fire Place. I have a hot take on this story, it's decent but the most overrated story of Series 2 in my opinion and far from the best story of this series as the fans say. Don't get me wrong this is still one of Moffats better scripts and I did feel for the character of Renee. Visually Paris and the ship look glamourus, the Cloakwork Droids are creepy as hell and The Doctor riding on a house and crashing the party was so badass. But I'm not convinced by the love story it would never work because The Doctor has Rose, Rose and Mikey take such a backseat and Moffat gives them nothing to do. I'd give The Girl in The Fire Place 3 stars out of 5!
Thanks Harry :) oh interesting that you find it overrated. Fair enough man. I wouldn't rank it as the best story in Series 2 but its a great one for me. I mean yeah Rose and Mickey do get a bit sidelined I guess. I won't ever call this one perfect. Did you like Murray Gold's score for this one? To me it was beautiful. :) See you next time for Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel.
I enjoyed this story although I do think it is quite overrated. It’s good but it’s not my favourite of this season or one of my favourite Tenant stories. David Tenant is very good as the Doctor here. Rose and Mickey are good although they don’t get a lot to do but for the scenes they have they are pretty good. Madame De Pompadore is a good character and she has good chemistry with David Tenant. However I’m not really a fan of the whole romantic relationship with the Doctor. Personally I don’t think that humans and Timelords should be romantically involved with each other, there’s a huge age difference and besides he was a grandfather in his first incarnation so it just doesn’t work and is one of my negatives with the story. The clockwork robots are decent villains, I love their design but their voices are pretty bland and they’re not the most interesting of monsters. To be honest I wish there was a main human villain who got to interact with the Doctor more. Also the idea of the different time periods on this spaceship, it’s kind of interesting but I wish they just set the story in 19th century France instead of on a spaceship. The sets and costumes are great here, I love all the old fashioned French outfits. The music is also very good. The pacing is good although some scenes do drag. Overall a good story but not great in my opinion.
Fair enough Sam thanks for sharing your thoughts. I disagree about there being the need for a human villain. I think the story is fine with the Clockwork robots. I disagree about it dragging as well, but I respect your opinion. As for The Doctor having romantic relationships, eh I don't mind it it doesn't happen too often. I'll make exceptions for Rose and Reinette (Reinette was a one off). I don't think it needs to be a regular thing, and I am glad it isn't. I don't think romance needs to be a regular thing in Doctor Who. I don't think age difference matters when The Doctor looks so young Sam lol :P Anyway its good to agree to disagree sometimes. See you next time for Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel
@@MrTardis11 sorry but I think it does considering how old he actually is. He’s been a very old man before and I just think it’s a bit weird having someone fall in love with the Doctor Who is over 100 years old. Just doesn’t work for me and it did annoy me. Fair enough if you disagree about the villains but that was a big problem for me. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on some of this story but I liked it overall just didn’t love it.
I hate the whole Doctor and Rose romantic relationship as well. It just doesn’t work and I was so glad when Rose left at the end of this season. I was just sick of her by that point.
Jeez you really don't like Rose do you Your not the only one Jack hates the love story too. I don't mind the love story personally but towards the end it did get a bit sappy. Rose is overrated, she can be too emotional at times and her whining did get a little annoying. I prefer Martha and Donna as companions. I thought Rose was decent overall.
@@MrTardis11 yeah I liked Rose is Series 1 but in Series 2 she just started to get on my nerves. Yeah Martha and Donna are much better especially Donna, she’s just so funny and likeable.
