The odds of beating addiction, when exposed to as a kid, is depressingly bad. It's not a question of discipline, but of how much pain these people feel they can and have to endure.
I managed to get off the glue, but finding the crack hard to give up. I’m not even gonna attempt quitting the hookers and Cocaine this year. Yes, your right, Childhood addictions are the hardest to remove..
I quit drinking alcohol over 18 years ago at age 50 even though I'd been a regular drinker from the age of 18. I didn't quit because of the reasons that were mentioned in this video by these two brave people, i.e. I didn't have liver or any other medical problems and could take it or leave it and didn't have to drink every day. The real reason that I quit was because I used to suffer from horrendous hangovers and I used what I refer to as my own 'Mr Spock' form of quitting, i.e. logic - if I didn't drink alcohol in the first place then logic dictates that I wouldn't suffer from those same hangovers afterwards, would I? After all this time I can't even stand the smell of alcohol in any of its many forms never mind the taste and I avoid pubs at all costs and the same goes for any other venues where I know that alcohol's going to be served. The daftest thing about this is that between the ages of 18 and 45 I worked in several pubs and clubs both here in the U.K. and also in Canada and I could've attended those same places on my nights off and have a tab running where I could drink booze at greatly reduced prices to my heart's content if I wanted to. No matter which drinking establishment I worked in I never took advantage of that fact. Most of my drinking was usually restricted to the evenings and nights before my days off to give me ample time to recover on the day or days after when I didn't have to attend work. In my last job which was in an office I was expected to work on Sundays therefore boozing on a Saturday was strictly off limits because I had no desire to be at work the following day suffering from a hangover. Fridays were okay because our offices were closed on a Saturday therefore we could all go out and socialise that same evening and night without any problem. Even though I'm such a longstanding non-drinker of alcohol I've tried over the years not to moralise with others who like to drink and keep my opinions to myself on that subject. It's never plain sailing when it comes to this because I often get dirty looks from people whenever I venture into a pub merely to use their toilets if I need to - most of those same dirty looks come from the members of staff who work there....if by chance I happen to stay in any of them I make a point of sitting outside in their beer gardens if they have them but that doesn't stop any of their regular customers or staff from either giving me dirty looks or making snide comments. It's a no-win situation as far as I'm concerned therefore that's why I avoid pubs. As I'm a single man and have lived alone throughout most of my adult life I have no problems with any of these lockdowns, shutdowns, restrictions etc because I've been used to them for well over three decades - in fact the only significant difference between now and March 2020, i.e. since the start of the pandemic, has been that I only go out once a day to my local shop for essentials if I need them and if I don't then I stay at home. If this makes me sound antisocial or like I'm a hermit then that's completely untrue - like anybody else I enjoy company but as with most things in the U.K. there just seems to be one word missing from a lot of peoples' vocabularies and that word is 'moderation', isn't it? Drinking booze to excess just seems to be another example of people trying to compete with one another, doesn't it? I often remark to friends of mine - both drinkers and non-drinkers alike - that the real reasons that people drink to excess is because they're either a) drinking to remember, b) drinking to forget or c) drinking to lose all inhibitions and make complete tw@ts out of themselves and not being able to remember what they did the previous night.
@@taniakeen4375, I too am a smoker but it's a sorry state of affairs when others start moralising with me about that while they're all quaffing booze, isn't it?
The alcohol companies in this country are very powerful, I notice on the radio how its normalised everyday by the presenters laughing and joking about having a few or one too many, the media even subtly convinced a nation that Amy Winehouse overdosed on drugs instead of drinking herself to death. As someone said to me it's like a very slow suicide.

My heart goes out to these people. I am an alcoholic, I stopped in May 2016. My brother. is an alcoholic too, and he is basically at deaths door. Why on earth are we encouraged as a society to put this stuff into our systems?
Governments view their citizenry as economic units. We consume and we create. We push it all around and, if they're lucky, some will fall off unnoticed. Alcohol is quite good, for governments, because it is a consumable and it is also a means of keeping us in the dark about the reality of our situation. I'm sorry about your brother. I hope you can find a way to save him in time. I wish there was one thing, that you could say to him, that would snap him out of his path to oblivion. Is he physically addicted or is it more of a social/psychological addiction?

The difference is that you don't pay for healthcare. In the USA you do. If you abuse your body through over eating or from abusing alcohol or drugs.. you should be paying the NHS for treatment End of story.
Alcohol is a massive earner for both Govt and wealthy share holders. The Govt has to spend tax payers money on treating the patients and chrine brought about by abuse of alcohol. Meanwhile the share holders laugh all the way to the bank. Not quite right is it somehow. The industry needs to act more responsibly and square up to its responsibility for the damage it does to society. Why should it be tax payers paying for the damage caused. The NHS and our police have enough to do already.
The pandemic needs to be recognised as a trauma and where trauma goes, addiction follows when people turn to substances to numb whatever is going on in their heads.
Hard to disagree that the UK has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol when minimum wage staff in off-licences nationwide, are considered key workers...

Refreshing to hear someone vocalise why government is reluctant to even recognise the problem, never mind address it. The alcohol industry and the relevant bodies that represent them have far too much influence on policy, and far too little (self) regulation. Also, 4+ years sober. Not an example of how it should be done. Just evidence it can be done, and offer encouragement to find a way that works for the individual.
I've been sober for a year now, and I swear to God after 17 years, giving up alcohol was the best thing I ever done. You don't realise until later how much control it had over you and how little of your life was actually yours.
People misunderstand that being alcoholic is only when drinking hurts your job, your family, your health etc. In fact, if you can't quit drinking, you are already an alcoholic.
Compared America and 2/3 of the other countries in the world you've got it good. Practically a fuckin paradise. Rather be in say, Bangladesh? Afganistan? Right.
It was never about health, Care, concern, protection, or safety for citizens or the world, it's always been about death, and profit. These governments, and Politicians never gave a Damn about you!!
We should ask ourselves what kind of society we have created that makes people feel they have to drink too much. Alcohol is not the problem it is the socio economic psychological issues that lie behind peoples' problems. Life is not so easy for many. We need to change our society and care and share.
I am so happy I managed to kick my addiction a few months before uk lockdown started in 2020, I think I would be in a very different place if I hadn't.
My mum stopped drinking about 5 years ago (she wasn’t an alcoholic but for digestion reasons she had to choose between spicy food, wine and caffeine and she chose spicy food) and it’s encouraged me to cut down massively to 2 beers now and again with friends. I never have more than 4 units and stick to low percentage beer or even have a non alcoholic one.
Part of the problem in the UK is the most affordable place to go in the evening is the pub. We need more temperance bars and venues where people can socialise without alcohol.
While that's a logical step & might help in catching some young, it won't stop more die hard seasoned drinkers etc alot of people already know the risks but still don't stop. Coming from a family & general social enviroment of heavy drinkers/alcoholics going back generations, I had uncles & their friends who used to make their own liquor when they couldn't afford it or get it otherwise, much stronger & more unhealthy than regulated legal stuff.
Oh shut up. This video is literally about the side effects covid lockdowns are having on us. Maybe just let people be free and for the most part will act in their own self interest
Depressing, dank, over cast weather contributes. That, the economy, breakdown of family, and lack of hope and a drinking culture have people self medicating.
Its scary to think that even if you realise you have a problem it is almost too late at that stage, even with 6 months the damage cannot be reversed. That really hit hard. People usually dont do anything drastic until its too late.
This is one of main reasons that alcohol is forbidden in Islam. The harm outweighs the benefits. The only religion that provides a solution to this problem. Don't drink.
We should probably add some of the other harms..harms to the individual, liver damage, depression..harms to the society, drunk drivers, demostic violence, rape, broken relationships etc Islam forbids alcohol because the harm outweighs the good. This is why we are instructed not to drink. Our creator knows us better than we know ourselves.
Put the calories in big print on the front of the bottles. Not being flippant, I believe this would be a big incentive not to drink too much (especially to younger people).
Think it's a good idea, but it won't help with its miss use. Every place in the world where alcohol is accessible or can be brewed, it's essentially miss used. There are so many reasons for doing so; an escape, feeling social acceptance, lowering inhibitions, just the buzz itself, a lubricant for a good party, even a lubricant for mating, etc. We are very insecure beings - and that's not about to change.
When he said " I've got nothing, but I'm happy" that's exactly what " they want for us" I wish this man , all the best of luck and happiness in the world tho 🙏

Doesn't help Xmas coming up and loads of ads on the TV for Gin etc! I feel I'm one drink away from another, so just don't do it like I have done in the past. If you don't pick up the first you don't have the second!
@TheRange, I'm in the enviable position of being completely teetotal and I never celebrate that Festive Fiasco, I'm neither a Christian nor a hypocrite therefore I see no point to celebrating it. As to your point about Christmas advertising - not just for booze but for everything else as well - unfortunately it's unavoidable between the end of October and all the way through tot the following New Year for all of us, isn't it? Fortunately for myself I don't own a television set because where I live I'm unable to receive any terrestrial channels as I don't have either a connected aerial or a satellite system so I can't receive any of their signals but I can still quite legally watch all programmes online without the added expense of having a television licence. Coincidentally I just renewed my status with TV Licensing earlier today so I don't have to fork out any money for the next two years for that unnecessary piece of paper. The beauty of my situation is that I can still watch all of the programmes that I want to watch them without the nuisance of advertising ( I mute all ads ) including those provided by Netflix, Britbox, All 4, ITV Player, My 5 because I have accounts with all of them. Funnily enough and despite the fact that I don't celebrate Christmas I just received an extra £10 bonus on top of my ordinary State Pension today. When I first retired over three years ago I was talking to a lady at the DWP and she told me about this Christmas Bonus thing of theirs and I told her that I didn't celebrate it and she said that "....it was so I could have a couple of drinks on them...." - I told her that I was completely teetotal and then told her that I'd probably buy a couple of large jars of coffee instead. We both had a good laugh about it.

BC Liquor stores were allowed to sell booze in the early phase of Covid19. The medical system couldn’t cope with illness from alcohol withdrawals and Covid. AA and NA meetings were allowed to reopen in the later part of 2021 as the need for continuos peer support and help with staying off of booze and drugs. I was lucky to have a core group of 6 people who met out in the open on ranch land, public parks and personal property. We lost many addicted people during Covid19, their hopelessness and future questions about living safely with Covid19 were unanswered for a long time. It isn’t a surprise to see the total deaths around the world due to alcohol and drug addictions

I was taught about drinking in moderation from childhood. Never had a craving for alcohol. Enjoyed a fine wine over dinner from time to time. An occasional Dry Martini. Shared a beer with our farm workers during harvest. No hangovers. Stocked our Wine cellar with several hundred bottles, my sister was Chateleine at Loudenne in the Bordeaux region
You are lucky ...I had to stop as my moderation turned bad ..nice that you can have it occasionally and enjoy moderation..Good for you ..wish I had been like that ..but 2 years on I enjoy like without ..my only option

There is a lack of proper support and care for mental health conditions of all kinds including drink and drug problems. There is no real community support or after care. We need to care for people.
Women need to be made aware of the dangers of drinking in pregnancy. Alcohol ( a toxin hence the word 'intoxicated') passes through the placenta and may cause a range of physical and neurological disabilities in the developing child. These lifelong disabilities are called Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) - the symptoms of which are ASD, ADHD, learning disabilities etc. There needs to be a public health campaign to highlight this issue.
One of my first drinking experiences at the (then legal) age of 18, was to get drunk on about a half of a fifth of Southern Comfort; I was nauseous and sick for nearly a week. I was so traumatized by it, that to this day, I have no desire to drink, and I am welcomed company and feel at home amongst Welsh Methodists and (American) Southern Baptists. I'm not going to be too sanctimonious about my abstemiousness however, as I had a weakness for Coca-Cola and drank nearly 12 cans a day for about 8 years; I made my dentist rich......

A lesson learned from decades of alcoholism, and years of abstinence, is that 'normal' drinkers don't feel the need to defend their drinking. Not sure why that came to mind as I was scrolling through the comments...
Should put on bottles big pictures of people dying of liver disease as they do with tobacco. Instead alcohol is publicised as a refined way of celebrating. Also the recovery model is not suitable mainly because it’s massively underfunded. Addiction is a response to trauma and suffering and detoxing is not enough. Stopping drinking is doable. Staying stopped is the real challenge.

People have some idea of alcoholism but usually think that as long as you are not in the gutter from it you are doing ok. People realize it is not healthy but don't realize what it does to a body, how quickly damage can be done at what amount of consumption, and the ultimate consequences. If people really knew the majority would not drink on a regular basis. That information which should be a part of regular education, is largely kept from people to support the industry and it also helps government subdue public rage.

People drink too much to blur their dissatisfaction with life's experiences. Love, money, career and on and on. At one time in the Uk alcohol consumption used to be limited to weekends, however, stocking up at home has led many down a dangerous path. The odds of beating addiction, when exposed to as a kid, is depressingly bad. It's not a question of discipline, but of how much pain these people feel they can and have to endure.

If your habit was as long as your messages, you’d be dead by now..

My heart goes out to these people. I am an alcoholic, I stopped in May 2016. My brother. is an alcoholic too, and he is basically at deaths door. Why on earth are we encouraged as a society to put this stuff into our systems?
Money !!! We are all just cash cows !
Culture and peer pressure we need to stop normalising 15 year old drinking alcohol as just "British culture"
How is your brother now?
Drinking is forbidden in Islam. Do you know how many crimes, murders, accidents, problems that happen because of drinking around the world? Too much! But guess what? It is forbidden for a muslim to drink but God promised it in paradise!
Allah says in Quran [the English translation of the arabic meanings of Quran] : (The description of the Paradise promised to the righteous is that in it are rivers of fresh water, rivers of milk that never changes in taste, rivers of wine delicious to drink, and rivers of pure honey. There they will ˹also˺ have all kinds of fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. ˹Can they be˺ like those who will stay in the Fire forever, left to drink boiling water that will tear apart their insides?) chapter 47, verse 15
And a fact that The wine of the hereafter is much better than the one of this world!

The difference is that you don't pay for healthcare. In the USA you do. If you abuse your body through over eating or from abusing alcohol or drugs.. you should be paying the NHS for treatment
End of story.
Crazy how this is legal but weed isn’t
Much less harmful .
Cost to NHS 9 billion ! Alcohol revenue 13 billion !! Net gain to government £4 billion !
Alcohol is actually a depressant and when you live in such a damp, depressing country like England surely you don`t want to feel any more depressed.
It's a central nervous system depressant. Not a depressant in that context. However, it is depressing.
The pandemic needs to be recognised as a trauma and where trauma goes, addiction follows when people turn to substances to numb whatever is going on in their heads.

Part of the problem in the UK is the most affordable place to go in the evening is the pub. We need more temperance bars and venues where people can socialise without alcohol.

This is one of main reasons that alcohol is forbidden in Islam. The harm outweighs the benefits. The only religion that provides a solution to this problem. Don't drink.
We should probably add some of the other harms..harms to the individual, liver damage, depression..harms to the society, drunk drivers, demostic violence, rape, broken relationships etc
Islam forbids alcohol because the harm outweighs the good. This is why we are instructed not to drink. Our creator knows us better than we know ourselves.

Think it's a good idea, but it won't help with its miss use. Every place in the world where alcohol is accessible or can be brewed, it's essentially miss used.
People have some idea of alcoholism but usually think that as long as you are not in the gutter from it you are doing ok. People realize it is not healthy but don't realize what it does to a body, how quickly damage can be done at what amount of consumption, and the ultimate consequences. At one time in the Uk alcohol consumption used to be limited to weekends, however, stocking up at home has led many down a dangerous path. No matter what the problem, 'reaching for one' seems to be the norm.
Make weed legal and phase out booze
My sister was only 53 when she drank herself to death 😞
Sean is so fragile, it’s a terrible disease, it’s a battle everyday , good luck kid.
❤
I watch a programme on Netflix recently and the adults drank on it daily. I recognised it as normalising alcohol abuse. I’ve been a nurse for 20 years and some of the worst deaths I have EVER witnessed were secondary to alcohol abuse. Alcohol doesn’t just ruin your liver- it destroys your body. Much of the NHS doesn’t even assess for trauma when people are having problems.
You are a special and unique person. Your life & soul matter. Your life is very short compared to eternity.
Therefore if you want to spend eternity on heaven after your life here on earth 🌎, you should believe in your heart ❤️ that Jesus Christ is your Savior. If you don't, you will miss going to heaven and end up in the lake of fire. It is terrible so I beg you to make the only correct decision for God to allow you to go to heaven. Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. 🙏 Have a nice day. God does love ❤️ you.
That reporter has zero empathy. Total sociopath
Has more compassion than those american yankees!
important issue
well done channel 4.
Same in Australia
Anyone know why Channel 4 isn't reporting on the case of Julian Assange?
There are new news items on the BBC, RT, The Guardian and The Times as of today.
Why waste time on him. He can live in Ecuador or the Gaza Strip.
Really? How accurate are stats? Some people were drawn into drinking booze instead of other activities such as reading, gardening, or shopping groceries online when they had more time at home?
As a sober alcoholic for more than 40 years in Alcoholics Anonymous I can assure you AA began holding Zoom meetings at the very start of the Pandemic. There are now members who have been sober via those meetings for more than two years. There are no dues of fees for AA membership and no one there is selling anything. If you want to drink, that's your business. If you want to quit, that's been the very successful business of AA for more than 80 years. Millions of people have been helped into sober and productive (and happy) lives because of it.
I wonder if part of the reason for not legalising all drugs is that alcohol sales would dry up if they did. Compared to other drugs alcohol is such a neanderthal hit, please don't ask how I know.
Worst drug .
Poor one can you imagine? He must be struggling is hard .. I hope he is okay
It is alright to be concern or not know about what happens after this life. Fortunately there's a way to not suffer, not be in danger, not be poor, not get hurt, not have to work in vain, not have to feel any kind of negative vibe, and not to get tired anymore.
Imagine you will be invincible, immortal, and holy with a new, upgraded body to the core! Imagine everyone around you will be the same as you. Isn't that a delightful thought? It's true you or anyone can have eternal life.
All you got to do is to accept Jesus Christ 🙏 as your Savior! Once you do, He will let you into heaven during your day when you finally see Him!
Aye. Same in Canada. Boozed it up quite well during lockdown. I'm now 2 weeks sober. A shitty way to die.
COVID really, REALLY ramped up my drinking. Been sober now for 1 year and 4 months and just celebrated my second sober Christmas! It IS possible to get sober but my goodness, do you have to WANT to get sober!
How about a mandatory jab for people who drink too much? After all they know the risks! We could do the same for smoking. Save tens of thousands of lives a year.
I drink once per month but it always ends up In a 3 day bender no sleep? I am Scottish though. Does anyone else??
4:45 im in anerica and the did not allow me to start a liquor home delivery service😢
Sod the beer, pls pass the gear.
Very well summed up by Professor Steve Ryder. I can’t agree with him more on that.
just goes to show you the social causes behind many health problems and addictions. Addiction is a coping mechanism. We need to address the reasons behind why people turn to alcohol and drugs.
The number of patients that die from alcohol liver disease is A LOT and it is heartbreaking because they are otherwise young and healthy. Young parents even, very sad, the government should intervene here and not force people to wear masks!!!!
I drink alcohol to enjoy events (not as a daily drink) and I've been drinking since I was 16, I'm now 27 and I never drink alcohol everyday only occasionally (it's all about mindset and how you discipline your self).
Lol. That's not normal. You should be drinking heavily at your age getting laid and sticking class As up your bottom.
Every addict ever has said the same thing before they became an addict.
(it's all about mindset and how you discipline your self)....that's not true at all. Some people are highly drawn to alcoholism specifically people who have suffered trauma in their lives.
I understand that's your perspective, however, how many people have been hurt, how many broken relationships, how many broken families, domestic violence...all by people who feel that's they just drink socially
There's some that would suggest that that's a mindset that could use a little bit of adjustment...
