Don’t lose your mother tongue. Don’t forget her. Teach your future children.
Speak your language as often as possible always.
My mother arrived in Aus as a child with her family and still speaks & writes & understands her mother tongue 65 years later from the Mediterranean region and speaks fluent Aus accent & writes & understands Aus English.
As the youngest in her family she grew up speaking her native tongue with her family and relatives and also learning English at the same time.
Yes it’s true that children learn multiple languages quicker than adults do.

This is the fourth of your vids I have watched. I'm always impressed with the way you methodically apply yourself with a determination to succeed in everything you do in your adopted country. Your Australian English is excellent with a nice trace of Spanish/Argentinian accent, it makes listening to you speak very easy.

It is a case of you have to.
My experience the other way 'round, going from Australian English to German, was dreadful. The written test I would breeze through, getting a 1.1~1.3 (top marks basically) in every section but spoken. Because Australian English is non-rhotic (in opposition to rhotic), and German grammar depends on sounds like -er, I'd get crucified in the spoken section. Also we have the tendency to drop vowel sounds, which you need to be conscious of.
After a while you stop forcing yourself and it becomes second nature, but people notice that you don't sound exactly right.

To be honest I have watched a number of your videos and your English is amazing, no, it's more than amazing , it's superb.
I would go as far as to say you speak better than 80% of the population, something you should be aware of .
After watching some of your earleir videos I was getting confused trying to work out what you did and who you were with.
I figured you had something to do with pyschology or psychiatry .I was close in my guess.
But, I have to say it astounds me how someone can grasp English, and switch back and forth between that and their native language.
I took German at school but I was useless , taught myself a few phrases in French, enough to get me by so I would not starve in Paris.( what a weird lot they are, they wont speak to you in English till you address them in French )
My wife is Cantonese, and has been here for 10 years, her English has not really improved in all the time she has been here ,even though, I see lists of words that she continually studies ,so it is still a guessing game for me to understand what she means because she misuses words and she and he is always confused so, I have to decipher her words to follow the conversation .When I speak, she just ignores me or pretends she didn't hear and I guess that works for her so, I have to just brush it off and realise it's not going to change as all her friends are either Chinese, , or Malaysian.
Oh , one thing I noticed with English speaking South Americans is the way they say Australia .It sounds like it has been learnt from a "bloke from the bush "it's devoid of any hint of an South American accent and is more Australian than Australian , just sounds unusual.😁

Love your video's. I am not trolling you here, but learning to pronounce "t" as in "important " NOT "impordant" is a key... Oh, and never loose your accent, it is so charming :)

I think it would be more correct to say that you needed to change your approach to preparing for the IELTS Test. It's such a particular thing and needs specific preparation. But as you acknowledged, a grounding in grammar is still helpful. I find that in general most of my Asian students are familiar with grammar but have rarely practiced conversation and social English. Most of my South American students are more confident with speaking but often have grammatical and pronunciation errors that they have been repeating for so long they're often frozen now in their approach to English.
Connecting to learning you're engaged in is a vital point though, I love that you watched Sabrina! I've had quite a few students who've risen through levels really quickly because they've been enjoying watching TV shows and movies so much and they pick up so much that way.

Also, just to defend language school a bit, in good language schools, we do all of this. Real receptive skills and real productive skills. My students listen to TED talks, we use it for vocabulary, listening skills and then analysis to either write a summary or discuss the themes and implications of what they've heard. A language school that focusses only on grammar will never help their students succeed.

Strong intent and strong work ethic. You put in a major amount of work! My parents paid a fortune for me to go to Ipswich Girls Grammar for three years (years 8-10) and that involved 3 years of French … omg! … After attending French classes for those 3 years I can say without a shadow of a doubt that my French accent was the best in class (dear god they were terrible) - brilliant minds who became scientists, pharmacists & doctors but they couldn’t do a french accent.
And my understanding of the Language remained a resounding Zero.
Lessons Learned that remain with me from French Classes - well I don’t butcher the word au revoir when spoken.
I know le and la precede many French words and
FIN means end of the movie.
The Story of The Ramble from a parent’s perspective is Good Money doesn’t guarantee a great education.
And School isn’t just for Academia - I loved my school - best time @ school ever.
    Ciao!

awesome english you have, I have been in a kind of a same process as well as you , by taking english lessons , I've started from A2 now I am doing the C2 level, it wasn't easy peasy, requires a lot of effort on this and consistency, it takes me 2,5 years to get at this point, nonetheless still being challenging understanding some accents specially the australian which is the country that caught my attention because of their culture and tranquility as a nation.
Comprehensible input is a great tool to learn also you can combine that by using language reactor desktop app and Anki app both of them great tools to learn new vocabulary.
Do you have any recommendations to listen the australian accent on YT?
    awesome explanation, bye bye.

Hola, Martina! Muchas gracias por el contenido.
I think it is not the proper video to ask it, but, how hard would it be for a Portuguese PR and Communications graduate (with low professional experience) who have never studied abroad to find a job as a translator (is it a viable income source, by the way) or as a receptionist (is it a common job among graduates) in Australia? I am pondering moving abroad within the next 2 years, and from what I've found out Australia seems to be a good option.
    Saludos desde los Açores

    • @livingsimplyaustralia
      @livingsimplyaustralia  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hey! Thanks for the comment :) It all depends on your CV, your skills, your English level and the industry you are looking at. For translator jobs, you'll likely need specific qualifications and FYI it is a competitive field (have a look at job ads). For admin/receptionist jobs, there's high demand in general, but again it all comes down to how you present your job application and how you position yourself in the job market. For more information, I have a dedicated video about getting a job in Australia with little to no experience here th-cam.com/video/1TB9xtk-D1c/w-d-xo.html I also have a few others about finding a job & working in Australia (key things to know) th-cam.com/video/z7uh3dpatRk/w-d-xo.html and Job ideas for international students & backpackers th-cam.com/video/cA6D6VV0TGE/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps :)

Crikey. Grats. English would have to be one of the worst languages to learn as a second language (it is so inconsistent), let alone the Australian version of it. If you want a real challenge, go along to a cricket or footy match and see if you can make out what the crowd is saying. For example, when troublemakers are removed by the police, you'll hear the crowd chant, "You're goin' home in the back of a divvy van."
