The biggest testament to Home Free's quality at this point is that legendary musicians are happy to team up with them. In this case, wow, just a fantastic performance!
The best line I have read about this version is " An incredible masterpiece of a timeless masterpiece."
I am so glad that Don McLean is a home fry or we may never have had this masterpiece. And maybe it's not faster, we are just 50 years older and our brains work 50 years slower?

Tim Foust (Low Dude) sang the 4th verse, he just did not go as low as he can. Tim has a 5 octave range an can sing from bass upto tenor. A Dire Straights cover of Brothers In Arms is a powerful song that shows off Tim and Adam Chance’s very low range. I highly recommend it. We are show your and mine ages because we know who Paul Lynne was.lol

Tim Foust (low dude) looked different from 'Man Of Constant Sorrow' because of beard trim and haircut (with a bit of silver showing).
Great review...I highly recommend going down the Home Free rabbit hole...Brothers In Arms is bone chilling and Hopelessly Hoping (Crosby Stills Nash) is simple and pure harmony. How Great Thou Art is one of my personal favorites!
I know who Paul Lynne was- center square. I may be 41, but being raised by my grandparents has caused me to have a older soul. I grew up on Hee Haw, Lawrence Welk, Love Boat and listening to anything from Elvis to Johnny Cash to Jim Reeves.

Don is 76 years old now and the song had its 50th Anniversary . Don asked Home Free to do this for the Anniversary. He still has a great voice too. They and Don also won Telly awards for this video and Don finally got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year and invited Home Free to sing as they presented the star.

They've performed together since 2000, 22 years on the road now (Although Adam Chance replaced the founder Chris Rupp in 2016)

What Raul said and also as much as we want to believe it and believe he could do it, Adam is not a 2x world champion. The beat box competitions were National ones here in the US. One was Chicago and I forget the other.

You will find the Home Fries are avid fans and happy to support the reactions to their music! Home Free has been around for something like 16 years with a couple of changes of singers. I was going to comment about your "Low Dude" singing his verse too, as his higher voice is so beautiful you wouldn't recognize it as being the same person! Others have mentioned his range too.

Brother, soon I'll be 71 yrs old. I LOVE these kids! Don asked them to do this for the 50th Anniversary of the song! It's clear why!! Kenny Rogers, Oak Ridge Boys and Alabama have all done collaborations with them. I confess, I've become a Home Fry.

This was done for the 50th anniversary of the song. Don McLean knows that it is iconic in American culture, and is very careful with the song as it is also his legacy. It is quite a thing that he chose to do this at this time with Home Free. And they did a beautiful, beautiful job.

I totally agree; each of their voices is very distinct and as Home Fries 🍟 we can tell pretty much who is singing without looking. It's fun to guess who is going to be the lead or chorus each song with all that talent in one group! I remember Rich Little on that TV show doing impressions. I was the youngest so I was the T.V. remote for old black and white set. Long, long time ago is right. 🙂
Thats the rabbit hole of Home Free...so many styles/genres of music, all with their own touch. Their collaborations, like this one, pay such homage to the original artist, yet they add their flare. Don reached out to them to do this collaboration for the 50th anniversary and asked Home Free to sing on location when his star was revealed in Los Angelos...the first time I believe that has happened. Check out "God bless the USA ft. Lee Greenwood and the Army Singing Sergeants" for another awesome and powerful collaboration with the original artist.
Home Free sang a snippet of this during Don's Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame reveal, Weird Al also spoke in tribute as well.

They do a duo with the Oak Ridge Boys doing Elvira.

One of the many, many reasons I'm such a "Home Fry" is Home Free's unselfishness when they do collaborations with other singers and groups. They take a back seat to their guests. This was recorded during the pandemic, each singer was recorded separately. Loving your reactions to our guys, can't wait to see your reactions to many more of their varied covers and originals.

This video was released on the 50th anniversary of Don Mclean's original release. FEB 2021..the boxes were because of quarantines...all were filmed in different locales..then post production did their magic.
Not exactly. The original was released Oct 24th, 1971, and Feb 3rd was the 62nd anniversary of the plane crash (Feb 3rd, 1959) that killed Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly & the Big Bopper. That is the date referred to in the song as the day the music died.
This was the 50th anniversary of “AMERICAN PIE”… for 76 years old…he sounds AWESOME ‼️. Hard to believe 😵💫😳‼️. And, yes, it’s the full version..8 1/2 minutes ‼️. Adam, the beat boxer, said he almost passed out it was so long 😵💫😳‼️ But, he did an amazing job ‼️. A note on Adam…he actually took drum lessons to make himself look like he’s actually “playing drums” 🙃🥰‼️ He plays a mean “harmonica” without a harmonica 🥰👍🥰‼️. He does a great solo in “WORKIN FOR A LIVIN”. Of course he’s Killer ‼️

Love this remake of this classic song. Can't believe it came out 50 years ago. Don McLean still has a good voice for his age. And love hearing all the guys take a turn in a verse. Poor Adam had to do such a long stretch of beatboxing but he nailed it. Think the song is about 8 min. long. Don McLean just received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame recently & Home Free was invited to sing a portion of this song there. What an honor for them.
Without a doubt, this song is in my top 10 of the best classic rock songs. It will always hold a special place in my heart. Glad I was finally able to view it because there's been so much talk about it. Thanks for listening!

I believe Don approached HF to do this for the 50th anniversary after he heard (about) Home Free.
What I love about Home Free is they are singers that focus on presenting a song rather than singers focused on singing amazing vocals (and don't get me wrong, they have amazing voices). That would be why you didn't hear Tim as much.
One other note is that this was filmed during a covid wave and they were all recorded in separate areas.

Don sounded great for 75! I believe he sought out Home Free for the remake. It’s so good. This was done during Covid so hence the separate boxes but they remind me of shadow boxes you keep your memories in. I loved the video with the black and white film in those boxes. Don recently got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and invited Home Free to LA to sing the song with him. They were delighted to do so. Such a great rendition. Home Free has also collaborated with Kenny Rogers, Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, and others. They’re known for their amazing harmonies. Paul Lynde (or Don) for the block….hahahaha yeah I remember! Good reaction Bob. Tim Foust is the bass. He has short hair in this one. Long hair throughout until Covid and he couldn’t get to the hairdresser so he cut his hair and let the gray show. Don McLean asked Home Free how they wanted him to do the song and their answer was to sing it any way he liked, that they'd adapt to him. I've seen collaborations they've done with The Oak Ridge Boys, Jeffrey East and others and I love the way they're so respectful of the song and the other artists. I think the age in Don McLean's voice adds a particular poignancy to the song.
Technically speaking there are 2 low dudes in Home Free. Adam Chance sings bass and baritone and did the first verse. Tim Foust is whom I believe you are referring to as "Low Dude" sang the last verse. Tim has a 5-octave range! I'm quite sure you would love his new solo album that is him singing doo-wop and does all the parts! It is good to hear a reaction from someone from my generation who heard the song when it was new. I think we have a completely different appreciation for it. Home Free pays homage to the older music with such respect. They have done songs with Alabama, the OakRidge Boys, Kenny Rodgers and they also did an anniversary rendition of "God Bless the USA" with Lee Greenwood. Lee sounds incredible as well. Keep a tissue handy though, it is very moving.

I had the fortune to see and hear Don McLean at the Jerusalem Theatre in 1980 while serving as Marine Security Guard in Jerusalem (1979 to 1981) he was phenomenal then and still has a great voice. Great collaboration with Home Free a fresh take on old memories I wouldn't want to have missed this cover or new rendition.🙏🏻🇺🇸🇮🇱🥃✝️🕎👍🏽
You will find that the "Home Fry" community is very welcoming to reaction "TH-camrs" and Home Free likes to thank them personally too from time to time if you drop them a message. If you have the chance, venture into one of their concerts, the live bass is 100 times better than any headset can capture. Many of us consider attending a concert as induction into becoming an "Home Fry" till then, just being a fan allows "Honorary" membership... so welcome.👍
Don wanted to do a 50 year tribute to American Pie and chose Home Free because they "understand harmony!" They polished this 50 year old classic to something shiny again. COVID made them do it mostly remotely. Only Tim, Austin and Don were in the studio at the same time. Thank them and thank Don...
Glad to see fellow "Home Fries" wading into the "deep end" of Home Free... they have an impressive playlist stretching several albums, so have fun on this pleasant TH-cam rabbit hole. It's always fun watching new listeners react and stop to Tim Foust's powerful bass talents, as well as the others guys' gifted talents.
For this song , it's like taking an iconic masterpiece and re-gifting it to a new generation. It begins with the epic matured voice of Don, then since it's a long, long song, the powerful acapella of Home Free and their beatboxer speeds it up for a catchy toe-tapping barrage of nostalgia mixed with the feeling of the timeless strength of a legendary song. The progression of the tempo from the power ballad to a fun soft rock and then finishing with the original tempo offers a somewhat eerie ending. Maybe a bit meta in suggesting that even when "HIS" song ends there will always be another generation to remember him and keep that drive to keep the music alive. While it's not passing a baton, I like that Home Free collabs with other legendary artists to pay respect and have fun with epic songs. As an avid Home Fry for years, and an A Capella singer, I highly recommend “Ring of Fire” as your next reaction. You get a bass surprise at the end! That will undoubtedly inspire you to then check out the group Pentatonix, as their bass singer corroborates with Home Free in this arrangement. Another that will open your eyes to the power of Austin’s voice is “When a Man Loves a Woman.” Keep up the good work!

Hello Modern Life....my name is Carole and I am 71 years old. I remember when Don came out with this song. It was the Longest playing song ever (minute wise)...there are so many references to the Beatles, JFK, going to the moon, the Vietnam War...and Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley and even Bob Dylan (the Jester). Many many mentions of the "older" days. Home Free does a fabulous job with the harmonizing with Don but after all, Don wrote and sang the song in the late 60's. It was his and his alone. I am surprised at your reaction only due to the fact that you are within my age group (I would think)....I do not mean to guess how old you are but you seem to know the song and Don McClean. I have watched many other reactioneers and they have no clue who the old fella in the center of the video is. It makes me want to yell and tell them that Home Free are only harmonising with Don. I totally appreciate your comments and it is very true that headphones are the key to hearing all the nuances of the singers. I love watching Home Free do their own thing but to me, this song is almost sacred knowing where it comes from and what it all means.....all the power to you and I look forward to more of your reactions....I am a French Canadian from Ottawa Canada with a great memory of the "oldies". Low dude had a verse. He is a basso profundo but also sings high tenor, so the Jack be nimble was low dude. Along with his strong baseline throughout. When he sings his verse Chance covers base, he was the first solo verse. As you get to know home free you'll get a feel for all that they are capable of. Low dude is Tim Foust he cut his hair during quarantine so you might not have recognized him. If you want a Low dude heavy track check out Brothers in Arms, the Dire straights cover. @@ModernLifeForThe70sMind Tim cut his hair short during quarantine and is allowing it to go gray which is confusing to a lot of people who aren’t very familiar with the group. It’s okay. A lot of long time fans were thrown at first too.
An interesting side note is that when Don received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this past year, he requested that Home Free be allowed to sing American Pie at the ceremony (there had never been a live music performance at a star dedication before that).
Some other “older” songs covers you might enjoy by Home Free: Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’, the O’Jays ‘Love Train’, Crosby, Stills & Nash’s ‘Helpless Hoping’ (5 part harmony, no beatboxing), John Denver’s ‘Take me Home County Roads’ & ‘Thank God I’m a County Boy’, and Johnny Cash’s ‘Rung of Fire’ & ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ (Tim goes very low in this one!)
They also just released ’Unchained Melody’ on Valentine’s Day. Austin Brown the group’s high tenor has a solo version of that song as well. Both versions are very good.

I love how they set this up with the framing, because it was made during covid. Also the black and white photos and film added to the story telling of the song. So much emotion.. Love, LOVE this!
Tim Foust has a 5 octave range. To get really good taste, watch his video of A little bit longer/Stay. All the background and singing is Tim in layers. It showcases him beautifully 😍

Low dude otherwise known as tim foust is singing the last verse
He has an amazing vocal range
They do "duets" with several original artists including Billy Gilman-One Voice, Oakridge Boys-Elvira, Lee Greenwood-Bless the USA. I too noticed how they kept coming back to Don(but also how he OPENED and CLOSED the song--he was the beginning and the end!).
These guys have increbly tight harmonies and timing, even after listening to so many songs it still astonishs me how "just" 5 people are able to produce a sound like a large pipe church organ (a few already mentioned Brothers in Arms - you will know what I am talking about). Beside their great voices these guys are friends for a very long time and genuinely love what they are doing and man does that show in anything they do. Especially when they decide have fun with a video, they can be completely hilarious - you want to have a good laugh - Champagne taste on a beer budget or Full of cheer - both are original songs written by Tim Foust.
They are pretty amazing to listen to, for sure.
You should totally check out their cover of Ring of Fire! Tim really shows his high and low note chops on it.
Everything Home Free does is good, but they knocked this one out of the park with Don. I could listen to it a hundred times.

50 years and Don still has the chops! This was a great endeavor by these guys. I love how they arranged this. I have heard that it was Don that approached Home Free because he loved their harmonizing. Great reaction for a fantastic song. Oh, and actually when you broke and talked about "low dude" not having a solo.... that was him singing at that time! Tim Foust has a 5 octave range and when he takes the lead, Adam Chance takes the bass part.
If you want more harmonizing, I suggest that you check out Home Free cover of the Crosby Stills & Nash song Helplessly Hoping, I promise you will be wowed.
Welcome to Home Fry status. Low Dude had the 4th verse but he was not using his low dude voice plus he lost weight and cut his hair during the pandemic. You might like Take Me Home Country Roads, it qualifies as it's a 70's song. The 70's really did have the best music!

HF does not perform a dramatic, forceful rendition (i.e. Carrie underwood, Whitney Houston)...But with their acapella, reverently/serenely presented, in the midst of the Austrian Alps...truly uplifting!!

So happy you did this one. Thx! I thought you'd like it. Don brought these guys in to sing this song when he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at the ceremony last yr. The only other group he ever sang this with was Elvis Presley and the Jordanaires. Pretty cool since the song is 50 yo! Don still tours so no wonder his voice is still in good shape. And isn't it wonderful to see these young folk appreciating and loving the music we grew up with? And paying it respect, too. You have to dig deeper into Home Free - some of the best music being made today. I recommend their 'Elvira' (performed with The Oak Ridge Boys), 'Ring of Fire' with Avi Kaplan, 'Helplessly Hoping' and 'Brothers in Arms'. There are so many more, of all sorts of music genres! You'll find stuff you will love !

His name IS Tim Faust. I've been following these guys since the won the competition show they were on. Tim did sing the verse that starts, "Oh, and there we were all in one place...". His voice range is outrageous. I'm telling you, please watch Tim and Petet Hollens singing a duet of Sound of Silence. You need to hear him --or may be Misty Mountains with Peter. Tim hits the last note like its butter from the middle of the earth.

It was a memory box lol. Adam, (the beatboxer) recorded his track in one take and someone said because it's such a long song and he went from going hard on the drums for six or seven minutes straight into harmonizing at the end that when he finished he was so lightheaded he damn near passed out. I have to say though the boy is truly God's gift to beat boxing and Adam is constantly perfecting his craft.

Love the reaction to the Home Free guys and Don McLean. Don received his Hollywood walk of fame this past summer and invited Home Free out to sing a part of this song. Really nice, Don's star was placed in front of the Pie Hole (I thought that name fit quite well :) ) Also Weird Al Yankovic spoke. Ok maybe this will be long sorry...Names of the Low Dude and others in order of singing...Adam Chance (goes by Chance) baritone/bass from Alabama...Austin Brown high tenor from Georgia...Rob Lundquist (The Beard) tenor from Minnesota ...Tim Foust (with an O) (low dude) bass/plus so much more from Southeast Texas...Adam Rupp the beatboxer/percussionist from Minnesota. You will also see an original singer, Chris Rupp wears a ball cap or cowboy hat. Chris left to go out on his own and is doing well. I know that was long but hope it helps with names.

That mistake has been pointed out to me numerous times. I"m starting to think all of you are starting to enjoy highlighting my misses. LOL I thought the same thing about Adam. I would have gotten lightheaded and passed out half way through it.

If you haven’t watched it, I think you would enjoy the documentary about this song, The Day the Music Died on Paramount+. (If you have Amazon Prime, you can get a free trial period for Paramount+.) The Home Free guys are scattered throughout the film either in group interviews or as commenters behind the film since Don asked them to record a 50th Anniversary version.

To hear a completely different style, but beautiful song you should listen to their Helplessly Hoping cover. There is no beat-boxing but it is one of their best.

Another Covid isolation video. They did these so well. I think each of them had a home studio set up, so each one recorded alone. I think all the "who does what" decisions were made in the editing. Funny that you didn't see that the guy doing the low bass beat (Tim Foust, their bass) was the same guy who did the fourth verse. And when Tim goes high, Adam Chance goes low. Chance joining the group gave Tim so much more freedom. Chance is mostly doing baritone for Home Free, but he was the bass singer for his previous group. And like Tim, he can go all the way to Tenor if he has a mind to. Chance did the first verse.
The other thing that I loved was near the end as the beatboxing part concluded, you could see Adam Rupp bow his head as he lay down his metaphorical drumsticks.
Two other great classic hits are Love Train by the OJays and Take Me Home Country Roads by John Denver!! Would love to see you react to those!
