    She said, "How could you joke at a time like this?"
    I know why, because this is what you wanted all along now, isn't it?
    I think that all you ever really ever wanted was a reason to complain
    That never stopped you before, don't let it get in your way
    Those are her words, not mine
    As far as I'm concerned, we could've had a good time, so
    If you walk out that door in disgust
    I guess there's nothing more to discuss
    Birds don't sing, they just fall from the sky
    Girls don't call, and they never tell you why
    That's just how they say goodbye
    Goodbye
    Don't listen to my music, don't lie in my bed
    Don't listen to the references
    To things you might have actually said
    'Cause those are my words, not yours
    As far as I'm concerned, it could've been a lot worse
    I wasn't trying to avoid the confrontation
    She isn't crying, she's just making conversation
    Birds don't sing, they just fall from the sky
    Girls don't call, and they never tell you why
    That's just how they say goodbye

    The fact that John chose to stay with Vixen after meeting his future kid with Hawkgirl was and still is a very rare thing to show when it comes to a character meeting their kid from the future. And consequently it's one of my favorite things about him: he was in a happy relationship with Vixen and saw no reason to ruin that chasing "destiny" which really showed his maturity.

    • @conspiracypanda1200
      @conspiracypanda1200 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      Also a bonus: it made his getting back together with Shayera more genuine too. Would be pretty weird if your ex just came up to you and said they broke up with their current partner to be with you again, not simply because of anything they still love or value about you, but because they went to the future and saw you had babies together. Plus, it put the power in Vixen's hands to end the relationship herself, allowing her to show off her own ability to be mature instead of a standard red herring love interest to be thrown aside and never referenced again.

    It always felt so alienating to become attached to John Stewart from this show, only to learn he always exists in the shadow of Hal Jordan elsewhere, even being replaced by him in Crisis on Two Earths, despite it being pitched as a prequel to the show. I guess that just makes his relationship with Hawkgirl all the more fitting, since she's also second fiddle elsewhere.

    • @electricfeverx976

      Him being replaced by Hal was because the movie wasn't part of the DCAU. They had to swap him and Wally out so it wouldn't be seen as part of that universe and it became it's own mini universe. There's also another film in that universe later on called Justice League Doom.

    John Stewart: A man who doesn't have a destiny of his own. As a soldier his path is laid out before him. As a Green Lantern his path is laid out before him. His past life was set in stone. His future seemingly set in stone as well. Seemingly he's comfortable with living his life on a set of rails, steady as she goes; but it got derailed when he got betrayed. John forsakes those rail but then learns that those rails were going to a place where he wanted to be the whole time. It's an interesting idea: Does one choose to reject destiny and fate when it's the outcome you want, just to make a statement about being in control?

    I noticed how ever since John Stewart was introduced in the DCAU as the Green Lantern, there’s always a brotherly dynamic between a Green Lantern and a Flash whether it’s Hal Jordan and Barry Allen or John Stewart and Wally West.

    • @batman369able
      @batman369able 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      There was always a close dynamic between them. Barry Allen was best friends with Hal Jordan and by extension Hal became a "cool uncle" to Wally. Jay Garrick was also best friends with Alan Scott. Wally.and Kyle disliked each other initially because Wally hated the fact that Kyle had replaced Hal but they soon went on to become very good friends and Barry was both a good friend and love interest to Jessica Cruz.There have been numerous series focusing on said friendships such as The Brave and The Bold and Faster Friends.
      John Stewart and Wally's friendship in the dcau was simply a new form of that iconic friendship rather then the beginning of it.

    The ideal self he feels for himself seems to be based on a moral code where self denial is possibly the ultimate virtue. Indulging himself is basically always a departure from that code for him, and thus when he's with Vixen, a relationship that makes him happy, he loses the buzzcut and grows the pimp goatee. Shayera is the woman he's allowed to be self indulgent for, that's how in love with her he is, but even after Once and Future Thing, he can't bring himself to be selfish if there's anyone on the other side of it that could get hurt.

    • @Grizabeebles
      @Grizabeebles ปีที่แล้ว +16

      One thing that goes a long way toward explaining John's moral code is his experiences as a Marine and his training as an architect.
      John's life has trained him to focus his creativity in finding the simplest effective solution to any broadly defined problem in the shortest amount of time.
      And given how power rings work, John's preference for simple solutions can be represented in terms of simple constructs that are stronger than simple constructs usually tend to be.

    I like how in the Justice League Kids episode, he's openly nerdy and is always trying to make his green ring manifestations more anime. When we see him using his ring as an adult, there's no imagination to them. If he needs a shield, he just forms a sphere around him and his friends. He needs a projectile, he just shoots a concussive blob of light. If he needs to detain an enemy, he'll probably manifest some combination of the previous two. His manifestations are no form, all function. Much like you'd expect from a soldier that has to think of and produce the most streamlined, simple version of what he needs, right on the spot.

    • @Edible_Kittens
      @Edible_Kittens ปีที่แล้ว +16

    • @mc_zittrer8793
      @mc_zittrer8793 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Edible_Kittens Thanks. Yeah, I noticed that the Green Lantern Corps as a whole all seem to use their rings in the same way. It could be that keeping their manifestations uniform was just an easier way to animate them fighting in groups, but I like to think that this was simply the way they all were trained to fight with their rings. John probably started out with zazzy manifestations like Hal Jordan, but after getting smacked around in basic training, John fell in line and adhered to the phrase 'Keep it simple, Stupid.'
      And I agree, the simplicity doesn't make him boring. It's why he's such an excellent member of any team he's on - he always knows how to use the right tools for any situation.

    There's no such thing as a "definitive" future, especially in DC, there's just a general direction based on what's happened already. Hawkgirl finding out about Warhawk very likely if not definitely changed the DCAU Timeline same as it changed a second time with the Batman Beyond Time Travel Episode.

    The interesting thing about John’s final decision in the series is that it can be read as quite selfish. He knows he still loves Shayera, but he tells her not only that he won’t be with her but he’s staying together with Vixen to assert his own control over destiny. The thing is that in doing so for that reason he’s actually hurting all three of them. He’s hurting Vixen by leading her on while he’s in love with Shayera, and he’s hurting Shayera and himself by refusing to face his true feelings. He’s essentially saying that he would rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. Frankly I’d love to see Vixen figuratively (and possibly literally) slap some sense into him and dump him. Then she at least could be free to find someone who loves her for her, and not because he’s afraid to lose control of his life.

    I can't wait to see your analysis of Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman.
    I always can't get into their comics because I love these versions so much and hold them as the ideal standard. Plus they rightfully show him having super strength, modern animated adaptations keep showing him as just the psychic shapeshifter and he gets jobbed way too often in and out of comics.
    I wish people would respect MM again not just power wise but also his importance, hoping the movies can show him as like the heart of the team again and their last bastion.
    And on WW her depiction in JL feels the most humanized compared to comics where things are often rocky and at its best she seems bland. I loved the episode where she struggles with her growing temper and cynicism against unending human crime and conflict.
    And then also working through her grudge towards Hawkgirl.
    Oh and on the former there's that underlying arc in JLU where she and MM help each other out of their struggles and outsider feeling, a transparantly inhuman alien and a demigod from a closed off island.
    I just realized he was the one to confront and council her on her anger issues before she did the same when Jon was set on living out his life in isolation.
    And Jon has also been good at helping his other friends out of some tough situations like when Superman's greatest fear was his powers out of control in the dream episode, he's a lot like the dad or the team sometimes, and it also tracks cause he was a father once.

    I'm still positively surprised how both JLA and JLA:U have replaced Johns general history and character from his comics - considering he was characterised in the comics as someone destined for greatness whose own anger brought his downfall. If you didn't know, around the time the animated series aired John had actually caused the destruction of an entire planet (which infamously got blown up by an entirely yellow coloured bomb) and he also was wheelchair bound, meaning he essentially was fully retired as a hero. he only acted as sort of a big brother to Kyle Rayner as the sort of mentor who teaches his students exactly what not to do to be successful.
    and yes, I get it, John was the right choice as the Gl for the series, but dang it I'm still salty about Kyle getting the very short end of the stick in the DCAU

    • @9751matt
      @9751matt ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hal is both too easy to write for and also too difficult. When he's around, he just sees a task and does it. He's fully admitted that he isn't that deep a thinker, but that's part of what makes him so powerful a green lantern. Outright the strongest GL of the GL corps in terms of success rate. But at the same time, he's gotten the repuation for being mule-headed and never learning from his mistakes. That's why they make John the leader of the Green Lanterns in Rebirth when the Corps decide they need someone with good strength of character.
      Even during the Earth 1 and Earth 2 crossover comics, before Powergirl and others jumped to Earth 1, the Guardians praise Alan Scott for being a much more level headed Green Lantern despite not being an official member of the corps. Which is a little unfair because if anyone knows the statesman Alan Scott, he and Jay Garrick have as much willpower towards justice as ANY Superman does. In Justice League Online, Alan Scott outright destroys the Sinestro Corps yellow energy in Sintestro. And he fights villains that are on Dr. Fate's level.
      If you want a good portrayal of Hal besides the CG series, which sometimes focused on Razor more, then there IS Emerald Knights.
      DC editors want Hal to be the main GL but they also don't know what to do with him. In the New 52 movies, they made him a joke during the movie 'War'. In the following movies, they had Nathan Fillian ad-lib a lot of his personality. They kill him as quickly as possible in Apocolypse, and in Young Justice, they have Hal and John on completely equal standing among the JL, instead of John being Hal's backup.
      DC editors: Bring back Hal!
      DC writers: Okay, what do we do with him?
      DC editiors: (shrug)

  • @youngthinker1

    John is a Marine, and Marines behave in a very different fashion from the rest of the military. They see themselves as better than other arm forces, which is easily seen with their higher PT standards, and the fact they rejected special forces funding and titles on the basis that being a Marine makes you special forces in comparison to other arm forces. This sense of soldiering and capability drives his character forward.
    As for his relationships, I took them as him shedding his childishness. Hawkgirl represents his ideal woman from his childish standards, as she is nearly a copy of him with certain aspects changed. He connected with her over that, but after the betrayal, he loses his rose color glasses and is forced to take a long hard look at himself and where he wants to be. He realized that he doesn't want someone that is him, but someone that completes him. However, the connection with Hawkgirl, i.e. their sexual relationship, taints his future ones, as that one cannot be broken.
    With Vixen, she is a much more mature and feminine woman. She knows herself and tends to teach John and raise him up, while letting him take the lead from time to time. She isn't blindly going along his path, but choosing to travel with him. He loves her due to this, and forms a much more mature bond than with Hawkgirl. Vixen even accepts John's failures with Hawkgirl as something that won't go away easily.
    At the end of it, his life is meant to teach young men the difference between your first love and a real relationship. Hawkgirl maybe what you desire as a child, but she is not good for you. Vixen maybe what you need, but she is tougher to find and hold onto. In essence, break the rose color glasses, and be completely honest in love.

    I think what makes his character even better is if you read the comic, John Stewart eventually does begin to let himself be truly happy. Unfortunately, it took Vixen being killed and him being kicked out of the Green Lantern Corp to get to that point. That said after it as all said and done, him and Shayera could finally live the life they always wanted to and finally settled down.
