      Michael Mathers
      Why do you need an anthem? The straight male has been an oppressor and in seats of power against women, and even sexual minorities.
      You don't need empowerment in fact you need to feel what you've made us feel.

    • @sophiejameson4064
      @sophiejameson4064 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @Michael Mathers there are endless songs that glorify men and the male gaze. Off the top of my head I can think of "He ain't heavy, he's my brother" and most of the Stones catalogue. Most rock music, for that matter. Sexism is like water and men are fish. Most of you don't even notice it.

    • @blessedbeautifulhealthyhai9695

      @@sophiejameson4064
      Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother about somebody carrrying their brother on his back because he's wounded? Like, it's about two brothers in war; brotherly love?
      Also, I'm pretty sure 95% of men today notice sexism. I get that some men today are still sexist pieces of crap, but to say that the general population of men are sexist is unfair and untrue.

      A classic statement, and a wonderful soul rock anthem. To see two great female singers dueting and completely taking over the stage was really rare in a rock context back then - and giving it a political edge, on top of that, still rarer. 💗

      It was a big hit in its day, but did not top the charts on either side of The Atlantic. Listening to it now you have to feel that the mid 80s didn't get much better than this. It is a great song, and a great collaboration too. Dave and Annie get soul cred from "the Queen", but Aretha gets something back too arguably in the form of some serious 80s edge. The voices are interesting together too. Aretha Franklin's vocal instrument is just amazing but Annie Lennox also has a very fine voice, so bell like and pure in it upper ranges.

      I loved this song and had forgotten about it until 1 day, someone with an incredible voice was singing it on the telly. I looked and it was Lucy Lawless singing it on her TV show...Xena Warrior Princess. As I was watching it I realized I was singing the chorus by the end. Then I saw Xena, but actually it was Lucy Lawless herself was pregnant while singing a song of female solidarity. Yeah, she was a warrior, she was a mother and she knew she could handle everything that came her way. Women know some things men will never know. It's that lack of knowledge that make some very unwise men think we have a weakness. No. We have strength, but due to how they were raised or what kind of religion theyre forved into, it takes those women a little longer to find that strength. But it's there.
      This song is a celebration of who we are ladies! When this song was picked up by the NOW, some weaker people felt it was a rally call for women to all become lesbians. Kick the men in our lives to the curb and go full chick power. They were wrong.
      It says right in the lyrics, "a man still loves his woman and a woman still lives her man." Don't be afraid of strong women. We are really fun to be around!

    This song is not a man's worst nightmare; it's a misogynist's worst nightmare. A true man respects women and treats them as equals.
    On another note, I can't believe I'm just discovering this song now! This is so empowering!

IF so, thanks for making yourself obvious psychopath. - And if you were just trying to be clever, why do you have an awareness of such a thing?

    I love how this song conveys that feminism does _not_ equal man-hating!

    • @OlderSnake
      @OlderSnake 6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      There's always been an aspect of man hating to any age of feminism. It simply varies from group to group. There are many who want to raise women up, not tear men down. Some do want to tear men down. Some want female supremacy. Some want equality. We'll probably settle somewhere in the middle.

    man Aretha was a whole confident woman,the way she moved and sung,it was all female talent ..i love how simply she was like talking while singing, from soul to mouth every word was meant .....and then Eurythmics.... back when Artists had temperament ,other than just talent, and transformed themselves visually as well....did you notice how Dave Stewart appears on the screen ,while the ladies sing? this is a genius thing, a bit of art deco and art pop , his dress,make up and the guitars, and intelligent way to be present without interferring to the singing environment , fullfilled by Annie&Aretha...GENIUS DUO
