You're right. Becoming an intellectual proper involves collaborating and sharing questions and ideas with other voracious readers. Try emailing professors at universities with questions related to their field; I've gotten insightful responses!

If you're looking for something more modern, try Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. Lastly, read King Lear, Macbeth, The Tempest, and Hamlet by Shakespeare (be sure to have a dictionary handy!). carlton sorrells That is an excellent question. A simple answer is that these books contain advanced vocabularies and complex sentence structures. If you study these aspects of the books I recommend, you will acquire a greater facility to express yourself: how you feel, what you think, why you believe what you believe, etc. Also, these books are a testament to the annals of human experience regarding every emotion from divine jubilation to despondent suffering. A better authority than me for your question is Harold Bloom, who has written numerous books on what you are asking. I highly recommend his book "How to Read and Why."
