  • Well, I removed some shields, and my curiosity found potential problems. So before we have a disastrous breakdown, we killed a couple more days with repairs. And we do sharpen the knives!

    Same way we sharpened them back in the early 70's. Had a 2 row NH chopper that we sharpened the same way. I thought I read in later years that they had gone to some auto sharpening system.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The manual shows the auto sharpener. It may be quicker, but it negatively changes the bevel of the knives over time so you have to take them off for a professional sharpening.

    You making new chopper 👍 It looked like you had a picnic around chopper with them empty boxes .😃 You got right idea on welding that chain , I would go for it and adjust row spacing and see what that chopper can do ,also pull wagon along side like the BTO do 🚜

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pulling a wagon beside the chopper would be cool, but that would require an extra person to chop. Right now, we can chop silage with two people.

    oh yea, great catch on inspection to see and then realize how a chain hitting the blades could make for a really really bad day. good PM and inspection.

      @@boehmfarm4276 Nope don't do that... that's how my old man was... never spend a buck to fix it right today when you can jury-rig it for 50 cents with spit and baling wire, and then have it blow up in your face when you can least afford the downtime and cost twice as much to fix right than it would have before because you have to fix the other stuff that busted when the first thing let go... SMH.
      I mean, I'm a certified jury-rigger, for sure... I could dream up patches and work-arounds to keep going and get the job done that would probably make a lot of people blush... BUT I *always* believed in "fixing it right" when the work was done and the pressure was off, rather than "well it worked good enough finishing up, just run it that way til it busts again" like the old man was... crazy! Later! OL J R :)

    i had roller chains on my picker that where that bad! cant wait to see chopping videos

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but if those break, I doubt too much more machine will be damaged. Might be a hell of a time if the chain gets wedged between the rollers.

  • @BedeMeredith

    Wow, I dont think there is much left that you Havant worked on, with this machine.. hopefully you'll get another 5-10 years good service

    Looks like it will be ready to roll. Is that a 4x4? I always liked sharpening chopper knives.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, It is 4x4. It's all hydraulic, on one pump, so if you get one wheel off the ground, you can't move.

    Good video. Where did you buy your gathering chains from? My 717 could use a new set. Looking forward to chopping vids. Take care, See you next post.

      Apple Farm Service. They had a full set sitting on the shelf. And if you get the right parts guy in Covington, and the parts have been on the shelf for a long time, we have finagled a few percent off.

    how bad can it get? i worked at a 110 cow dairy that had a gathering chain go through the gehl chopper and they DID NOT bother or did'nt want to dump that chopper box in the field, put it all in the silo. following year when i started working there they lost cow after cow after cow after cow to hardware disease.

    • @fredf3391
      @fredf3391 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jasonmushersee didn't that chain make a lot of racket going through that Chopper . Neighbor was chopping dry hay and burned his barn down because of a hot bearing . Also didn't want to dump load

    • @jasonmushersee
      @jasonmushersee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      like inside a combine cab can't hear anything but the corn head must have plugged right now. it's happened to me when i was trying to pickup those 2 rows the tractor knocks down & i did dump the chopper box load in the field. all the chopper knives only had a nick on them and sharpening them over again got rid of that but the cutting bar was shot had to be replaced as well as all the gathering chains. they're $90 each.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We found our chains for $70 each.

      Somebody should have turned that owner in if he was that far out of control , the P.O.S. . NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO DO THAT TO DEFENSELESS ANIMALS , that F-ing farmer should be forced out of business for such practices !!!!!

  • @timerfarms113

    Does it run in reverse for sharpening?

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, reverse is not an option for the cutter. There is a reversing gear box that drives the feed rollers and the head.

    Don't forget the shear bar, I'm suprized you don't turn the knives backwards to sharpen them

    • @MrMagnum7220
      @MrMagnum7220 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chopper won’t let you. Only one direction for cutterhead.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's all forward motion. Only JDs have backwards ideas.

  • @MrMagnum7220
    @MrMagnum7220 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Stinks that your head has to run also. I’m spoiled with my Claas where all I do is flip switches and I’m done. Like another said, adjust your shear bar.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a lever and a reversing gear box for the head. I am sure it has a neutral position, but since we had to fix that gearbox first thing after we bought it, it has always been engaged in forward.

    do more videos about the cows.

      There will always be more. But animal videos invite the crazies.

    I’m surprised with all your old equipment you don’t have the tool that mushrooms rivets. Mustn’t have ever owned an old sickle bar haha.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have age standards on old equipment, so no old sickle bars.

    • @conortimm733
      @conortimm733 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Age standards? I think condition standards are better because newer equipment can be junk with the wrong owner and they made sickle bars into the 60's and I know you have older equipment then that, but I understand where you're coming from. We have 2 for mowing pastures. One came with our John Deere 60. Both in good shape and barn kept

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chains???? $70 each x 6 and we replaced bearings in the idler sprocket those were about $10.
