What is the secret of these perfomances of Bach's cantatas by Rudolf Lutz and all his precious friends that they move me all the time to tears? Is it passion reached by perfection or is it perfection reached by passion? You name it..

1. ARIA (Baß)
Es ist euch gut, daß ich hingehe;
denn so ich nicht hingehe,
kömmt der Tröster nicht zu euch.
So ich aber gehe,
will ich ihn zu euch senden.
It is for your good that I depart;
for if I did not depart
the comforter would not come to you.
Thus, as I am going
I will send him to you.
2. ARIA (Tenor)
Mich kann kein Zweifel stören,
auf dein Wort, Herr, zu hören.
Ich glaube, gehst du fort,
so kann ich mich getrösten,
daß ich zu den Erlösten
komm an erwünschten Port
.
No doubt can disrupt me
from listening to your word, Lord.
I believe you go away
so I might be comforted
that I, with the redeemed,
will come to the desired harbor.
3. REZITATIV (Tenor)
Dein Geist wird mich also regieren,
daß ich auf rechter Bahne geh;
durch deinen Hingang kommt er ja zu mir,
ich frage sorgensvoll: Ach, ist er nicht schon hier?
Your Spirit thus will govern me,
that I walk upon the proper path;
at your departure he indeed comes to me,
anxiously I ask: Oh, is he not already here?
4. CHOR
Wenn aber jener, der Geist der Wahrheit,
kommen wird, der wird euch in alle Wahrheit leiten.
Denn er wird nicht von ihm selber reden,
sondern was er hören wird, das wird er reden;
und was zukünftig ist, wird er verkündigen.
When, however, yonder the Spirit of truth,
does come, he will guide you in full truth.
For he will not speak of his own accord,
but rather what he hears, this he will speak;
and what the future holds, he will proclaim.

Was mein Herz von dir begehrt,
ach, das wird mir wohl gewährt.
Überschütte mich mit Segen,
führe mich auf deinen Wegen,

Whatever my heart desires from you,

Dein Geist, den Gott vom Himmel gibt,
der leitet alles, was ihn liebt,
auf wohlgebähntem Wege.
Er setzt und richtet unsren Fuß,
daß er nicht anders treten muß,
als wo man findt den Segen.
Your Spirit, which God impart
is from heaven,
he guides all who love him
along the well-laid path.

Ich habe noch nie eine schönere Aufführung dieser Kantate gehört.
If scholars are correct, that Bach wrote one of these gems each week for six straight years, well that’s just....frightening.
The individuality of so many of the chorales astonishes me more than almost anything. Bach created a musical universe, but much of his genius, unlike Mozart, lay in a workman like attitude. This hard labor is to me more evident in the chorales than any of his other work.
Wasn't it 3 years? Whatever, more than enough to just listen to over a lifetime ...

It is interesting to see that the Bachstiftung has selected a large Italian instrument with both 8' 4' registers as its usual continuo harpsichord. Nikolaus Harnoncourt commissioned an instrument from the German builder Martin Skowroneck of the same type, and it produced a distinctive kind of continuo sound: clear, plangent, yet sweet, that truly defined the sound of that ensemble for years. I wonder if it was a conscious choice here, too? A wonderful performance here, as usual.

Man wagt sich nicht, jemanden aus dem Ensemble hervorzuheben. Aber dass Kerstin Kramp eine ganz große Könnerin ist, darf gesagt werden.
