This cantata (103) could well be the earliest cantata of my memory. The reason being that I was an auxiliary (additional or extra) chorister at my local cathedral in the UK, and we were going to sing this cantata as part of a concert. I was 9 or 10 years old at the time (1963 I think) and for some reason the piccolo obligato player was stood next to me singing at the end of the trebles. (It was an all-male choir in those days). Well the music started to play and off goes the piccolo playing his part swaying about with this excellent and somewhat complicated tune playing high above the rest of the orchestra. Needless to say I was transfixed by the player and his music and was staring up at the man. When it came to the choir to start singing, my neighbouring chorister had to jab me in my side, very hard with his sharp elbow to bring me back to reality. Fortunately, we trebles didn’t have to sing during the first few bars of the fugular theme of Bach’s and I was able to join in at the correct point in the score, as the piccolo continued it’s wonderful obbligato theme next to me. I’ve never forgotten "Ihr werdet weinen undheulen" and still remember this wonderful cantata, and it is still my number one cantata of Bach.

Ein großes Kompliment der Blockflötensolistin! Dieses Instrument wird oft unterschätzt, dabei strahlt es unter allen anderen Instrumenten wie ein glitzernder Stern hervor. Hervorragend auch die beiden Gesangssolisten und der jugendliche, temperamentvolle Chor, der vom Dirigenten meisterhaft geleitet und angeregt wird. Bach und der Bachstiftung sei für diese wunderbare Aufführung herzlich gedankt.
In my recording of the cantata by Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir, I can barely hear the blockfl"ote. I heard the cantata in Leipzig 5 years ago, and it was much more prominent in the live performance.

Extremely dramatic and creatively interpreted by singers and instrumentalists. Especially creative are the harpsichord improvisations during the fermatas of the concluding chorale! Bach comes back to life!

Creo que bach penso como sonaba una flauta en el tiempo biblico.. por supuesto no se como habra sonado esa flauta en los tiempos biblicos..pero es muy especial..estoy seguro que bach era un siervo de Dios..la musica que transmite solo Dios se la pudo regalar.
I went into my metronome app to tap in the tempo I feel the first chorus should be. It’s the one opening Bach chorus I feel is being done TOO fast in modern recordings. The funny thing is, on BWV 103, I tapped 103 BPM. Haha
An Italian harpsichord with a 4' register, like the 1956 Skowroneck built for Harnoncourt and Concentus Musicus in 1956. It really provides foundation for the whole ensemble - a splendid sound. No. No discrimination. Just the best of the best. If a man was better, he was hired. Look at the recorder soloist-the central part of the entire cantata-she’s a woman, and beyond that, a brilliant instrumentalist.

This cantata is absolute GOLD, and it needs a diamond choir. This is the only Bach I’ve had to slow down to learn the melisma.
