"Full High Definition" I don't think you know what this means. Not to be rude here, and just hoping to educate: 1080i is NOT 1080p. Interlacing on modern televisions can introduce a massive amount of input lag. Also, interlacing means the actual rendered resolution sent to the TV is 1/2 the final output resolution. So 1080i is actually 540 lines of resolution with every other line being "interlaced"... Meaning the pixels are basically faked from the actual lines of resolution in the original signal. So one line of pixels then one line of faked pixels filled in by the TV. Progressive resolutions will always have a lower input latency and cleaner image because every pixel on the screen will be output in real time from the original signal with no extra processing from the TV - with the exception of upscaling.
1080i doesn't "fake" half of the pixels, it just posts half of them at a time alternating between odd rows of pixels and even rows of pixels. Hardware could more easily handle broadcasting and receiving (mostly cable TV pipelines) half of the pixels for a given image per frame than all of them at once even though, at the time when 1080p and 1080i were both regularly used, 1080i would generally post at double the framerate. 1080p was clearly more favorable as displays grew larger and the interlacing became more noticeable. Part of the problem with interlaced scan was that anything that depended on frame precision (like slowmo video) resulted in you only getting "half" of a frame interlaced at a time. Modern TVs now days CAN de-interlace a 1080i signal however, which (depending on the method) does sometimes result in the "fake" pixels you described. Back in the day, displays didn't do all of the upscaling they do by themselves today and depended on the device broadcasting to them to basically do that with interlacing.

This is literally on page 7 of the owners manual. And when Gran Turismo 4 came out they were making a big deal out of it being like the first HD PS2 game, remember walking into Best Buy and they had a big display set up for it
Everybody watch out !!! Nate Great Games knew about this years ago from reading said page in an official PS2 owners manual !! How cool is that guys !! Wow !!
it's not really an HD game tho, the game runs at 576x960 (552.960 pixels) which is was less pixela than the lowest HD resolution 720p (921.600 pixels) the PS2 didn't have any games that actually ran in any HD resolution, just modes that supported HD signals and made the image look sharp enough to look decent on an HD TV. Jackass runs at around 540p, which is lower than PAL SD resolution
The first 1080i television came out in ‘98. Gran Turismo 4 came out in ‘04 which was well into the 1080 days. Was useful for the larger projection tvs that many houses where beguinning to have at the time
I found this out while working on the road. The PS3 had been out for a few years but I still rocked my PS2 sometimes and this time in particular I decided to take it with me on the road. I saw the 1080i setting, and was dumbfounded then when it didn't work over composite I was bummed. (I've learned alot since then.) However I figured pretty quick that there had to be a component cable that I just didn't know about. I looked it up to confirm my theory and luckily the local game store had a set. So I got them and set them up on the crappy hotel flat-screen. And I was not let down, it looked amazing and the rest of my time in that hotel room was spent playing the only game I brought with me. Gran Turismo 4.
Resident Evil 4 (and others) had the progressive scan option by holding triangle and x as the game was starting up. With a home brew app called GSM you can force most games to 1080i with some working at 480p. The ps2 lives on!
I’m glad I had PS3 component cables lying around. Most games on the PS2, including PS1 games can at least play in 720p. And some games even support progressive scan, which helps make the picture and frame rate slightly better.
Despite only a handful of games supporting 1080i HD resolutions, it is still highly recommend that you use component cables for your Playstation 2 nowadays simply because they make even standard definition games more clear. Not to mention that there are a plethora of Playstation 2 games that support 480p output which is a pretty big improvement over standard 480i, and this can only be enabled by using these cables. Some notable examples of 480p games on Playstation 2 include Burnout 2 (the very first game to support this feature) onwards, Guitar Hero II onwards, Rachet and Clank: Going Commando onwards, all Rock Band titles, Jak and Daxter II onwards, The Simpsons Hit and Run, both God of War games, and many more.
Thank you very very much for this tip. I also ❤ the PS2. I have kept my original version 1 alive. People think I am mad by having it fixed everytime it goes wrong but I have 125 PS2 games I adore. The Original Monster Hunter for example, Shadow of the Colossus, FF10 & FF10-2, FF12, Gran Turismo 3, 4 & special editions. My list goes on & on. I will not let my PS2 die and how DARE Sony stop production on this Magnificent console.
You just brought back alot of memories...lol..I remember finally discovering this feature at the very end of ps2 life cycle (basically a few months before i got my ps3..lol) It made a big diffrence playing Shadow of Colloses..lol..Good throw back discovery🤗👌🏽👌🏽
I actually did know this for the reason of, when I eventually replaced my TV, it no longer had the S-video/composite inputs. and component inputs do not always take composite, at least sometimes when they do, you actually lose the color on the tv. Not like it is unsaturated, but that it actually straight up has a chance to become Monochromatic. On a hilarious note I recall having to changes the setting from composite to component blind. and even though it can do 720-1080i, it looks rather sharp and gets rid of some blurs that make certain games look better. Like in Okami.
Well, technically not full HD. 720p/1080i was marketed as "HD Ready" because it isn't true HD. Full high definition content is 1080p. 1920x1080 progressive scan. Still incredible that the PS2 had support for HD Ready TVs when I don't think they were even a thing when it first released.
Yup, this isn't Full HD, it's interlaced 1080 which yields an actual vertical resolution of 540 pixels, so lower than 720p but still having more pixels horizontally.
Would've been cool if other games supported 720p(I) (I'm not too picky as long as pixels aren't over stretched or blurry) since I still have some games I need to finish. What would really be cool is if big tvs in the near future were capable of running retro games/consoles at both they're native resolution and screen size for correctly displaying them while turning off parts of the tv display that's not currently in use! 😳 I'm sure this has been thought about yet it's either too soon till its actually possible or its just a fantasy. 🤔 (I guess I can't sell myself too short since decades ago we all used to dream about VR and here we are today playing VR games and witnessing different worlds created from VR. 😏)
As long as you upscale by whole integer numbers and maintain the aspect ratio, you're fine, regardless of the original resolution. That's how Xbox does it with their backward compatibility program. If the game supports widescreen modes, it'll look damn near perfect on an HD TV, despite the age of the source material. Though one could argue Xbox cheats a bit here, by maxing out texture filtering and other graphical options far beyond what the original hardware could handle, but, hey, you don't hear me complaining about my free 'remasters'.

I wouldn't say 1080i is "Full HD" but definitely an improvement. Didn't know anyone didnt know about the component option Edit: yes it's HD but it's not FHD. Full HD doesnt mean it's fully HD it means it's 1080p. There's a difference from FHD and HD
@@JohnGlasscock technically it's 1920x540 per frame. You could argue it's full HD at half refresh rate or you could argue its half HD at full refresh rate. Either way I've never liked interlaced but for the time this is the best they could do.

The best-looking game at the time when the PS2 was and this is my personal favorite the bouncer. The graphics for that game was the best-looking game on the PS2. then came next Midnight Club one these were the two best looking game on the PS2 you can ask the see the potential that the PlayStation 2 had to offer when it comes to graphics with these two games but then after that the graphist got downgraded after these two games until I got my hands on Transformers on a PS2 and again you can see the power of the PS2 the graphics on that game was insane 10 out of 10 and then after these three games the graphics went downhill with the graphics after that but that just shows you that the PS2 had the potential to rival the Xbox when it came to graphics had they kept the graphics the same with all there games like with the three games I just mentioned.
Some games also supported 480p, Tekken 4 can do this, but u have to hold X and Triangle on boot-up of game, u'll get a prompt about swapping to 480p. Games looks fantastic in this mode, Tekken 5 also did this but u could swap it in menu instead of the "hidden" button presses. Fatal Frame 3 also supported 480p, there's a list online of all the PS2 games that support progressive or higher resolution.
Guaranteed, this isn't as secret a feature as you think. The Gamecube and Xbox also had the ability to use component for a higher definition signal. The only real issue with the video is calling composite video cables S-video cables. While both cables produced a similar signal, S-video inputs were much more rare, and allowed progressive video (480p) versus the traditional or truly standard definition (480i). I'd suggest, for the most part, 360p is pretty similar to 480i and 720p is similar to 1080i for MOST TVs. I'd rather have a progressive video resolution, personally, but it could be argued that the 1080i signal was easier on plasma displays when they were more prone to burn in.

This feature improves "sharpness", resolution., but pixelated graphics on HD TVs are noticeable when you are too close to the TV, the farther you are from the TV and the farther you look the image you see less pixelation, another factor is the size of the screen, if the HD TV or monitor is less than 32 inches you´ll see less pixelation, so you need to have a smaller screen and look it from a farther distance, but of course the best solution for the pixelation problem is to use scalers
You forgot to include Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria to the list. Another game released in the US. That game also outputs 1080i when using YpbPr component cables. This is literally on page 7 of the owners manual. And when Gran Turismo 4 came out they were making a big deal out of it being like the first HD PS2 game, remember walking into Best Buy and they had a big display set up for it
Cool
who the the fuck reads the manual tho
@@ayylmao8837 Me
Everybody watch out !!! Nate Great Games knew about this years ago from reading said page in an official PS2 owners manual !! How cool is that guys !! Wow !!
it's not really an HD game tho, the game runs at 576x960 (552.960 pixels) which is was less pixela than the lowest HD resolution 720p (921.600 pixels)
the PS2 didn't have any games that actually ran in any HD resolution, just modes that supported HD signals and made the image look sharp enough to look decent on an HD TV.
Jackass runs at around 540p, which is lower than PAL SD resolution
The first 1080i television came out in ‘98. Gran Turismo 4 came out in ‘04 which was well into the 1080 days. Was useful for the larger projection tvs that many houses where beguinning to have at the time
And that’s also why that trick was not known because who could afford those very expensive TVs back then
I’ll have to try it out. I still have 2 out of those three games. 👍
It works! 👍🏻
Just started playing my PS2 again after having it in storage for years. It's bringing back fun good memories. PS2 ROCKS!
Im also playing PS2 and the best way to enjoy when you are playing with friends.
720p would've been a better option for less motion blur
I still can’t get over the fact that his last name is glasscock
I’m glad I had PS3 component cables lying around. Most games on the PS2, including PS1 games can at least play in 720p. And some games even support progressive scan, which helps make the picture and frame rate slightly better.
Love your content man! Thank you for these new info. The PS2 is my fav console too. The magical feeling.
Yes, I love the PS2
Its also fun to remember, even if other games arent compatible with 1080i resolution, they still look a lot cleaner through a component cable
Also if you hold triangle and x as the system starts up you can change to progressive scan
Yeah, but it had to be on a TV that supported Progressive Scan
That's not true. My TV supports progressive scan and it didn't work.
I have around 600 PS2 [PAL] titles, all visibly fully functionable, blue, black or silver 99% have cases - there is about 6500 to collect.
This is by far one of the most helpful and useful channels on TH-cam.
I gotta say that i love this guys contents 🙌🏽
Thank you 😊
0:27 Yeah, that's a pair of S-Video cables alright..

I love you channel. You are very consistent in the composure of your videos which makes your channel awesome.
Got so much nostalgia when I saw one of those games was Jackass. I actually still own my copy to this day.
Yes, I knew. In fact, my PS2 is connecting with a component video cable to my TV right now.
So nostalgic
Very 😌
@@JohnGlasscock I have question john
Can i use any microfiber cloth to clean ps5?
@@halofreak1990 in not knowledgeable enough to understand computer jargon but if it's possible and hopefully won't break the bank, I'm almost willing to try anything sometime down the line. 😣 if I was in your shoes, I wouldn't be either! 😉
Thank you for releasing this educational video. I just bought Marvel vs. Capcom Clash of Superheroes. Can’t wait to try it out with this new way to play the games. I’m also going to try Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2.
I wouldn't say 1080i is "Full HD" but definitely an improvement. Didn't know anyone didnt know about the component option
Edit: yes it's HD but it's not FHD. Full HD doesnt mean it's fully HD it means it's 1080p. There's a difference from FHD and HD
it was considered full HD during the PS2 Era!
@@JohnGlasscock technically it's 1920x540 per frame. You could argue it's full HD at half refresh rate or you could argue its half HD at full refresh rate. Either way I've never liked interlaced but for the time this is the best they could do.
@@amamsurri5454 lol imagine finding something back in 02-03 at 1920x540 most ppl dont even know 1080i until 05-06
@@passerbeta2298 in 2001 the xbox had 1080i "The Xbox supports enhanced definition 480p output and high-definition output in 720p and 1080i with the addition of an official (High Definition AV Pack) or third-party component AV cable."
Mind you not a lot of games supported it but that's true for the PS2 as well. I own both. 1080i was inferior to 720p imo especially if your system was crap with deinterlacing
@@amamsurri5454 Ofcourse the xbox fanboys got a big mouth, GT4 has better graphics than Halo infinite.
I'm surprised I was able to keep my running to this day with how often I used it lol. Still runs great.
PLEASE DO MORE PS 2 VIDEOS i have a ps2 but i don't really get stuff cuz it's new to me, and of course i use the ps2 to just play immidietly with my cousin. But now i have my own ps2 😁 though it's not the original :(
So you’re saying you had the normal one or slim one?
1080i on PS2 had a lot of interlacing issues compared to the original Xbox, it was still a cool feature
with Bravia's at the time - ( I had the rear projection types ( for darkened rooms - that lost definition on the screen :( even 39 inch screens weren't crisp back then )
Goes to show why it's the goat and best ps of all time
My favorite console of all time!
It only seems to improve clarity but pixel counts seems to be the same. It's like the game it's doing the upscaling itself instead of leaving it to the TV set
You forgot to mention MGS 2 & 3. Not very Raiden of you..
The Bouncer was a beautiful game!
Oh the memories of bringing your memory cards with you to friends. The good dayss
Ok
Some games also supported 480p, Tekken 4 can do this, but u have to hold X and Triangle on boot-up of game, u'll get a prompt about swapping to 480p. Games looks fantastic in this mode, Tekken 5 also did this but u could swap it in menu instead of the "hidden" button presses. Fatal Frame 3 also supported 480p, there's a list online of all the PS2 games that support progressive or higher resolution.
Well that's amazing what's yall favorite PS2 games.
My is gta San Andreas
Manhunt
Black
1. MGS 3 Special Edition
2. Burnout 3
3. Timesplitters Future Perfect
Metal Gear Solid 2
1:12 The intro that defines my childhood! Wonderful times, those were!
1:19 theme song was the best!! Took me to the time can’t go back! But they were great memories :)
You can also do press and hold triangle + X on playstation 2 boot logo so that it will switch to HD if the game supports HD feature
I thought this was going to be another one of those "Did you know you can rotate the logo on the PlayStation 2" videos.
You have successfully subverted my expectations.
Eyyyy 600000 subs… must be doing REALLY good with your Glasscock

the best looking ps of all time, it still looks modern currently
1:08 oh look, a memory card. The heart attack you get when you could not find it. Ah, good old days.
PS3 component cables will work as well on the PS2 and are much easier to find available to buy than the official PS2 ones.
Many complain about still poor quality image, but if you used the official PS2 and later the gold plated PS3 component cables, the image is crisp and detailed.
PS2 is still my favorite, that boxy design and startup sound.
1:12 I know i'm not the only one who felt a little bit happier inside after hearing the start-up noise again
I have a Sony Bravia, now I finally knows why it had a 1080i option
Thanks!
The sound of the boot up is music to my ears and joy for my soul.
That startup cutscene drew back nostalgia to the time I called grand theft auto.. Car stealy game
Tourist Trophy was awesome and the PS2 is my favorite console also. That music at the beginning with the “PlayStation 2” logo tone. The shape of it is simple and resembles a car amplifier.
The start up tune made me smile but feel old at the same time.
I bought my first HD TV specifically because of that functionality. I remember all the conversations about whether 1080i was better than 720p because of the frame refresh rates. I also had a 30ft ethernet cable running from my PC to play it online, because that's how we did online gaming back at the beginning. 🥴
Still do if your not stupid, wifi just isnt good at all for online gaming...
@@DeanWilliams1987 still do, yes. But we don't need the PC for the bridge anymore. Straight from the router, currently at 124mbps. 😁

I actually bought the first 55 inch hd sony tv and i did use the component cables to play my ps2 in 1080 i was fresh out of high school. There was literally 1 hd channel on tv and it was a rotation of like 3 things a fireworks display a bee and some flowers and something with water like rain i used to watch it over and over for hrs cause it looked so amazing. Lol how times have changed now i have a 300 inch 4k projector
"You probably remember plugging your ps2 with these cables"

Off topic but those LCD Sony Bravia televisions are still amazing to this day
The PS2 start up just gave me goosebumps of happiness
Freaking awesome. GT4 is one of my favorite PS2 games. Didn't even know about those component cables; what are they, $800?
Kinda funny how HD doesn't really help the picture though lol
They weren’t really expensive at all, but I’m guessing it’s probably hard to find original ones today, especially brand new. But I think you could find “alternative” ones.
That starting sounds rly brings the memories
1:36 lol that tripped me out for a split second. I have that exact tv with a ps2 hooked up to it as well. what are the chances lolol
Came for the humorous last name, stayed for the info lol
It honestly made the pixels so much more visible, sure it was High-Definition, though it became so 'pixely' (for lack of a better word).
0:25 "...THESE S-Video cables..."
* holds up RCA cables *
Don't think I have my old RF adapter or SCART (RGB) cable for my PS2, but still have the component cable I bought for it. Best investment ever.
I was never able to get the component cables, so I used S-video for everything. nice and sharp for it's day, even at 480.
Component cables for video and fiber optic for audio tapped into your 5.1 Dolby sound system was kick ass back in the day. Did that for the original Xbox and first revision of Gamecubes too. Sadly, there was no fiber optic output for the Gamecube though. And if you really wanted the best picture you would get Monster brand cables if available for that system which were the best at the time.
He says “remember when you used an av cable to hook up your ps2 to the tv?” I’m sitting here like “yes indeed I do, it was yesterday” lol
0:27 The cables you’re holding are composite cables, not S-video
Nice Shulk pfp
Also tons of games have combos for progressive scanning mode with component cables
I knew about this feature but still nice to see a PS2 video
Do not forget the Triangle and X feature
FYI, what you called s video is composite video cables.
The ps2 was robust as hell! I remember at the age of 13 my ps2 constantly froze .. I dropped it down the stairs accidentally.. it never froze again and still works to this day I’m 25 😂😂
Duuuuude just hearing the old start up sound and the sound when the ps2 name comes on screen is pure nostalgia
I can't tell whether watching this video was a mistake or not, I forgot how beautiful the PS2 was and now that I remember I don't think I will ever forget
