How to Update the Firmware on a Nikon Z Series Camera

- A few weeks ago, I talked about things I would like to see from Nikon to support their customers, including firmware updates. One feature from the Z8 that I mentioned would be nice to trickle down to previous camera systems was the Warm View option.
A commenter pointed out that Nikon had actually released that feature in the most recent firmware update. I thought this was a great opportunity to walk through how to do a firmware update or a Nikon Z Series camera (and show off the Warm View option!)
In this video I talk about checking the version of your firmware on a Nikon Z Series camera, where and how to download the firmware, and initiating the firmware update on the Nikon Camera.
I demonstrate this on a Nikon z6 II and a Nikon z7 II camera.

Thanks Jeff, I was hesitant in doing my first update on my Z8, but you made it look so easy, so I'll give it a go,
Glad the video was helpful! Good luck with the update (and enjoy the Z8!)
Thank you so much for this. I've been struggling for ages now to get the correct update file in the correct place on the memory card. Most helpful.
Great! I am glad the video helped!
Thank you! This was just what I needed
Glad it was helpful!

Glad it helped!
Thank you, i was having trouble updating my camera but you made it clear. I was placing the file in a subfolder
Glad it helped!
I have such difficulty with firmware updates thanks for doing this video . Going to try again for the Zfc so frustrating.
Glad it helped! Hopefully the update to the Zfc goes smoothly!
Just getting back to playing with my original Z6 and it’s still at 3.0 - anyone know if I can just download 3.6 ? Or do I need to install intermediate updates ? ie is the firmware CUMULATIVE???
Thanks!
No problem! Hope it helps!
Thank You!!!
Glad it helped!
I was trying to follow your advice but my z7ii did not even see the update on the SD card until I realised that you have to have the SD card as the primary card, I had mine as a back-up card, then it recognised the update.
Glad you got it figured out!
I just upgraded to a Z 8 and a few days later installed FW version 2.
There was one detail that was different.
Before: (Windows) (a) download file of .exe type and this is a self-extracting archive (zip) file.
Once done (b) extracting, we have a .bin file that is the binary holding the new firmware.
That .bin file needs to get (c) copied to the root folder of a memory card that next is (d) placed in the camera and from there can be (e) installed (provided enough juice in the battery).
New: (Windows) the download file is the .bin file already. This replaces (a) and (b) by "download the .bin file" and (c) .. (e) stay the same
Thanks! They changed which file type they download on the most recent updates for each camera system - I probably need to pin a comment and/or update the video description!
Thanks for the video. For the update from 1.41 to 1.50 on a Mac, I only get the choice of a .bin file. Is that normal?
Z fc? The .bin file should be what you need. Here’s the instructions on the Nikon site and they reference the .bin file:
downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/506.html
Hope that helps!
FYI instead of scrolling down forever, you only need to scroll up once to get to the firmware section of the menu :)
Oh yeah! Great tip!
Thank you for this amazing video! I run into one problem that after I downloaded a file from Nikon Download Center, I double clicked the 'dmg' file and it does not show the 'exe' file. I tried this on another computer, and have the same problem. Do you have any advice? Thank you.
Are you updating using a Mac computer or Windows? The dmg file is for when updating the firmware from a Mac, and it should have a .bin file in it. That’s what gets copied to the memory card.
Does that help?
@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography OMG! I use windows and thought the shaded one (either MAC or Windows) was the selected operating system. Now, I am able to do firmware upgrade without any problems. Thank you very much and I subscribed to your channel. Thank you again!!!
Great! I’m glad that got it going for you. And thanks of the sub - much appreciated!
GET TO THE UPDATE!
👍
Do all the settings reset to factory settings after an update?
No - the update won't reset the camera back to factory settings.
Just getting back to playing with my original Z6 and it’s still at 3.0 - anyone know if I can just download 3.6 ? Or do I need to install intermediate updates ? ie is the firmware CUMULATIVE???
Nikon updates are typically cumulative. And the 3.6 update is cumulative - they note this on the update page "This update includes all changes made in previous updates."
Hope that helps!
Thanx
I did all that but still dont see update onlo what i see is 2 versions and files delete and done
Were you able to download the update? Which files were on the SD card?
I found oud that i have the FTZ 2 there is no update for it yet . Thank you for the quick response@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
when I try to download the firmware it is in .bin format which is "an unsupported format". Now what do I do?
It looks like in the most recent firmware update, Nikon provided the .bin file for download directly. So no need to extract a file, just copy the .bin file to the memory card for updating. Hope that helps!
@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography did not work for me on my Z8 from version 1.0 to 2.0
and the bin file is on my SD card
Make sure to follow these steps, I'll include the "gotcha's" below the steps to watch out for:
1. Make sure you have the downloaded firmware file on your computer.
• Z_8_0200.bin (the camera firmware)
2. Copy “Z_8_0200.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.
3. Insert the memory card into Slot 1 on the camera and turn the camera on.
4. Select [Firmware version] in the [SETUP MENU] and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
5. Once the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
The key things to watch for.
-Make sure it is the 2.0 version of the firmware for the Z8 (you can tell by the file name)
- Make sure it is the .bin file in the root of the memory card
-Make sure the .bin file is not in a sub-directory, needs to be in the root of the memory card
- The memory card needs to be in Slot 1 of the camera.
Those are the common reasons why the update might not proceed as expected. Hope that helps.
@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography The problem was I had to remove the CFXb card. Once I did that no problems.
I just bought a Nikon Z30 but it only has the Chinese language. Is there a solution?
I am not sure on that. To my understanding the cameras might only have a small set of languages on it depending on which region of the world it was intended for. I am not sure how to get a version of firmware with the correct regional language on it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
