    Hello Julian, Welcome back and congratulations on your Z8. Of late, I've returned to shooting B&W film with my new to me, excellent condition Nikon F6 and F5, as well as two F100s. Great video and most helpful, as always.

    Well the menu system has changed a lot since the Z7 😱. Glad to see the grid lines option there now, as i usually use the destructive version on my Z7 as i use the 1:1 option a lot. I don't see the point of having format card in my menu now that the Z8/9 have the external 2 button format card option back on the top plate of the body. Now if only the rear screen was fully articulating, the Z8 would probably keep me with Nikon.

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When it comes to using the Format command in My Menu it's a case of old habits die hard! I admit myself, a fully articulating screen would be amazing...not so much for stills, but for video it would invaluable. :-)

    • @carlb401
      @carlb401 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jbairdexp I guess it is what you get used to, i have always used the external 2 button format method since my D200 days so that is what i have got used to myself. Although now with the Z7 i have had no choice but to put the format card into my menu as it can't be added to the - i menu which is where i keep everything i use, that way i rarely have to go into the menu system itself.
      The articulating screen is a must for me now as i can't get down to look through the viewfinder if i am doing low to the ground shots in portrait orientation, plus there have been a few times i have tried doing top down shots but wasn't able see the screen as the sun was on it with the fixed angles. I am currently having to use a tablet as a screen, but that adds more weight to my bag with all the clamps etc needed to fix it to my tripod.

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In that shooting scenario, would the vertical articulation of the Z8 screen not do the job? I shoot a lot of vertical orientation photographs and the new articulating screen on the Z8 really helps with that....because as you say, it's difficult to get your eye to the EVF sometimes.

    its exciting topic for me. I am going to buy a Z8, and I am worried about how much is sufficient image quality with 14bit, 45.7 mp vs my gfx100s with 16bit, 102mp! please advise.

      @@jbairdexp Thanks for your quick response. I used to do a lot of landscapes (long time Nikon user) and generally always stuck to f11, but since getting z8 a few months ago, I've not really done any landscapes as have been getting into bird photography, but am going out this afternoon as weather looks good to try to find the most fantastic poppy field so was really interested to know what aperture you use with the z8. I will try f13 (alongside f11) today and also focus shift as well. Then I also need to set up a separate photo bank for landscapes so I don't need to change so many settings all the time! Thanks again. Very helpful

      @@rachelhusband9890 I hope you got some nice photos from the poppy field? Did you also use focus shift? I hope you had a good time taking photos 🙂

      @@jbairdexp Hi yes I did thanks and I did use the focus shift. In landscape (depending on where you set it) it only takes about 4 to 5 images. It can take about 10 if set to one (though some of them seem irrelevant), but I set it at about 3 to 4. Got some good images, other than sky a bit bright on some. I normally bracket, but because i was focus shifting i forget to bracket. Doh! Though I can't see that you can do both at same time. So next time with landscape when I do focus shift, I will manually change exposure to 2 or 3 stops under exposed (or whatever I need) and then run focus shift again. IF that makes sense, so i have 2 sets or more if i need it. Also tried f13 which worked out well for single shots. But when I did focus shift i stuck stuck f8 or f11 as its taking multiple shots at different focal lengths for me so didn't need to go higher.

    • @jbairdexp
      @jbairdexp  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not sure that would be something that could be changed with firmware unfortunately. Brightness and contrast are probably baked into the physical characteristics of the panel.
