Magic is Amazing!! For example, on the bottom right corners of the the cards you'll see something like 3/1 or 4/2, etc. The first number is the card's Power and the the 2 is the card's Strength. On the the top right corners of the cards is the Mana that it costs to cast your spell. For example, if you see 2 and a water symbol that means it costs 2 of any land cards and a land card that matches the symbol. And if it says 5 and 2 fire symbols that mean it costs 5 of any land cards and 2 land cards that matches the symbol. Magic is a lot of fun and it's such a rewarding game once you start to understand it. It's basically about strategy and building a deck you like to play with. The goal of the game is to knock your opponents health from 20 down to 0. I'm no pro at Magic by any means lol, I'm still learning about the game myself, I've only been playing for about a year. My neighbor across the street got me to play Magic with him one day and I started to like it to the point we play every other weekend at his house.

    Boogie,
I have been your fan for closing in on a decade. I have discovered and fell in love with MTG in the last 2 years. While I am definitely experiencing the college brokeness you referenced, I agree that being apart of this community is the main way I enjoy the game. I would love to see more videos from you about MTG, especially those EDH decks you mentioned. I hope I can do so as just a basic viewer of this channel or a sub on a different channel. Love you very much.

Boogie I'll be honest. I've played Pokemon and a little Yu-Gi-Oh, but never have been interested in MTG. My cousin tried so hard to get me into it, but I just never took up with it. In regards to how you meet "normal" people, you do what your already doing Boogie, go to something that you enjoy and meet like minded people. "Normal" is what you enjoy. I did the same thing in college. First day of freshman year, outside of our classroom and our teach was late. It was a game design school and I just randomly purposed a question to everyone there, "So, anyone else going to PAX?" Mind you this was when there was just the one PAX, and it was so low key you could walk up to the ticket booth at the Bellevue Expo center and buy a ticket. But everyone immediately started to talk to each other about gaming, music in gaming and art. TLDR: Do things that include what you like to do in a social setting and you can find friends there.

I have never played Magic the Gathering or any other card game, but what always fascinated me were the beautiful designs and drawings on the cards. I also never understood when players criticized a certain series within the game. To me as an observer all cards look the same. It is absolutely necessary to study the matter thoroughly to have an idea of what makes a bad or good set.

I was 19-21 I believe when I sold all my collection to a friend for a steal. In 35 now and I miss it for sure. We used to play a lot throughout middle School, but teachers really frowned upon gaming in high school, even though we technically weren't supposed to be playing in middle School either. We were all nerds so we got good grades and first to finish tests types so we stayed out of trouble and got special treatment. Not getting to play really consistently for a few years got me out of the mood of it so I rehomed my legendary collection.
I only played in one official tournament in maybe 8 or 9th grade, third place beating out adults. I was a savant, only thing that lost me the last match was nervousness caused one minor mistake that began my downward trajectory. I got lucky with a handful of circle of protections maybe from 7th edition (maybe, can't remember) and I was able to hang in matches until I could build up my army or spells and develop a plan to win.
I remember that I let a lot of my friends win matches against me knowing I could smother them because it was all about having fun and sportsmanship to me. I even let people win just to see how they played and their deck strategy. I had one deck I was proud of, all green, all commons. All about regular creatures and enhancements or whatever they are called. I could have a handful of green creatures out with 5/5-20/20 with flying, trample, whatever. Very powerful deck that I built up and perfected over time. Wonder if my friend kept it together..

Oh! Get this, I once bought two boosters of.. what's it called... Unglued!!! I got both sides of BFM in just two boosters! Impossible odds! I remember though I used to be.. Still am.. So anal and OCD, we were in the locker room in athletics and a jock grabbed my cards in my hand, BFM being some. They got bent and k as so mad and depressed my one friend felt bad and placed them in a stack of books to flatten it. I'll admit, he fixed them but I thought they were still tainted and no longer perfect so I told him he could have BFM.

Started playing MTG (specifically commander) about a year ago to keep in touch with my friends who live in a different state than I do. I can say it’s legit one of the best games I’ve ever played ever. I have quickly built a nice collection of cards as well as 9 (soon to be 10 once the Warhammer decks finally drop) commander decks. I still have a lot to learn but I can confidently say if you’ve never played MTG for whatever reason you have and are reading this give it a chance. Have someone teach you, you will lose a lot but each loss will make you better as you figure out how to play, build and master the decks you make.

I absolutely loved this. I know very, very, very little about MTG, but I did grow up when it first started to become popular. I bought a few packs back in the day simply because I loved the art on them. It's the sort of thing where even if you don't play them you can still really appreciate the artwork. There's a particular card I'll never forget, even though it was really common, simply because at the time I thought it looked absolutely amazing: Brush with Death. No idea how to play MTG and don't know if I'd ever get into the game itself, but they sure look cool to me. And I appreciate when someone is passionate about a hobby. I really enjoy vids like this. Do what you love.

I've never played Cube. I tried commander once and got wrecked. Friend who tried to "Teach" me used his best deck and turn 2 was insane. But I got interest in eventually learning. I started back in the 90s and still got a lot of my older cards. I know ya hate Urza's but I got them Urza's lands that made my artifact decks work wonders! I still got old ice age cards and the OG javalineers, etc. I still miss Banding sometimes hah. I have grabbed some cards now and then. I do have a weakness for Ravnica. As for tournaments I've only entered 2, mostly went to pre-release events. But I won 1 of the tournys for a Masters one. I forget which year, but I had Cyclonic Rift and it carried me HARD. Every time I got in a pinch I board wiped. I do miss events like that but less likely masters. I want to say it was like 70$ just to play.
Edit: Also I gotta say Amonkhet with the Egyptian set and the Artifact one right after with the Aether, love those. I really need more MTG friends. lol

I laughed the number of parallels between the two of us growing up. I grew up in Bowling Green Kentucky and went to Upward Bound for my junior and senior year. Got into magic and late 94 with the Dark and revised, and ended up getting out during the Ursa Saga because of what Tolarian Academy did to type one. Got back in again with original Ravnica but ended up getting out during Future Site because I deployed to iraq. I actually got back into Magic the Gathering because of you Boogie when M15 came out, you talked about it a lot and it really piqued my interest and I decided to get back in and have been playing ever since. Genesis Hydra ended up being one of my favorite cards as well and I won several championships because of it and Devotion.

Boogie i would pay big money if you were to sign and sell cards. I made the mistake of selling my small collection after graduating high school in 2013 that was around 300$, then i picked magic back up in 2020 and realized that those cards added up to over 1000$ over the years. I no longer sell any of my cards instead i chase after signatures or autographs on all my expensive cards. Most recently my best friend bought me an imperial seal reprint and i asked him to sign it. Monetary value means nothing compared to the emtional value these cards bring.

I'm no lawer but I'd say just include a Magic episode a week. I actually JUST started playing yesterday and I'm your age. Buying the first pack and someone showing me how to play. Really enjoying it.

Would love to see mtg mondays more! Doesnt have to be unboxings every time, could be things like meta / strat discussion, state of the game, going through collections, etc just like this vid

When Boogie mentions your hometown "Lubbock", Dang I was that close to meeting the man the myth.

Pretty much everyone makes friends thru a common interest like going to comic cons, church, gym and bookstores. The Other ways are thru work and school or neighbors. That's how most people build their social network.

Let's be honest Boogie. As collectors we keep telling ourselves that we are making an "investment", but we both know we have no intention of ever selling the good cards lol. A bit of advice on the question you asked. If you truly do enjoy magic and it brings you joy, don't mix it with money. It becomes a job. When you do it because you want to it really shows.

I’ve been playing MTG on and off over the years since day 1. I remember the days of Type 1 and Type and Type 2. I used to go to FNM every Friday and play Standard and Legacy. Later on, I got out of the tournament scene and was pretty much only playing Commander. I’ve met some cool people and made some good friends over the years, but I also met a lot of elitist assholes and gatekeepers that ruined the game for me. I haven’t played in about a year since the Strixhaven set. I really miss playing and have considered getting back into it, but I don’t know if I want to commit a lot of money and time only to have toxic players run me off again.

Keep "Magic Mondays" going! Love listening to you talking about Magic, and I too have been in this hobby since 1994 (revised).
Would love to see your Commander decks.

I played for a bit and have a good Revised Edition set. I just looked at some of the prices of them. OMG. Most I just took out and put into sleeves.

If you want the money videos, pokemon pack openings are the way to go atm. A new set is about to drop at the end of the month.

I’ve never liked MTG but what actually got me into this channel years ago was the MTG opening videos. I was thinking about giving it a try but I couldn’t ever stay interested in playing but I absolutely love pack opening videos

Boogie, while I understand your TH-cam revenue has tanked, I don't think a pay-wall is a good idea. I'm not a MTG player, but I enjoy listening to you talk about things that make you happy.
I used to play a lot of D&D, a few video games (mostly Halo 1, 2, and 3), and have thousands of hours sunk into Minecraft, but I still like hearing about things that make the people I follow passionate, even if I can't relate specifically to the content.
Keep the MTG on the main and make it a regular series. Those who don't like this content will only have to wait a day or so for the next video.
Keep being you. Those who matter won't mind, and those that mind don't matter.

I have a whole brand new sealed 5th edition box from 1997 that has just been sitting in my closet. I bought it years ago with hoping to draft it, but I haven't done it yet lol
