to play devil's advocate for a second, this was almost certainly made during free time as a hobby project, and those projects get done when they're done. despite having a lot of money behind them, professional movies have to abide by a schedule for a lot of reasons, so it's rare to see a CG movie that looks about as good as it possibly could have looked for the time it was made. no matter how much money you throw at a project, in many ways, it cannot replace time.
Whoever did the sound design for this is a genius. Like the visuals are obviously breathtaking but the sounds of the environment and subtle things like the creaking of the organ, groaning of the tower itself and clacking sounds of the wood when Skull Kid picks up the mask (or moves in general) are so satisfying and chilling to listen to 👌👌
The thought that a mask like that could exist sends chills up my spine. Hearing the Skull Kid scream as he tried to stay in control..... I don’t even have the words to describe it. If they made Majora’s Mask into a movie, and it was animated by EmberLab, I would totally watch it
Tabby Cat yes, it was rather dark.. it gave me chills. This is damn good work, and they should make it into a feature film! Too bad it didn’t have Link and Epona meeting up with Skull Kid!
FBN Flavius Broadcasting Network that scream wasnt him trying to stay in control, it was because so much power went into him that he briefly died and wanted that mask off asap
While this was a while ago, I also want to point out how it's framed the same way as Link's mask transformations, but drawn out. Even the gasps are similar. "Eugh-eh Eugh-eh, Eahhhhhh!" When Link puts on any of the three main transformation masks for the first time, there's a longer pause here between the first two gasps and the final scream as he collapses (presumably because this was more of a contest of wills while Link's were voluntary-yet-no-less-horrifying. The final frame and pose are the same, though. Really neat homage in an already great animation. It almost makes it feel as if all of Termina - including the masks and how they work, were made by the mask itself in the canon of this animation.
With the Mario movie proving how profitable a huge Nintendo movie can be, we really need to see a Zelda movie with this style and tone. It would be spectacular.
The movie was already in production before the super Mario bros movie hit theaters, its close to being done with the base editing/CGI and im certain will start early test screenings in the upcoming months.
An animated Zelda movie better not have that quirky family friendly humor though. It's time for America to stop associating animated movies with high energy goofy romps. A Zelda movie would not work with the same style as the Mario movie. I hope they realize that, but I doubt it.
@@josephjoe4180 I completely agree. Ive grown tired of the "happy" movies that have very little to no depth of seriousness, a lot is due to the MCU, and id hope, in the best case scenario, they would have a more serious tone with the Zelda movie, especially because some of the games, in the story/lore, are actually really dark.
This aged so fantastically. I remember seeing this when I was 10 or 11 and thinking that it was such cool animation and that still holds up strong today.
Of all the Zelda games, I think Majora’s Mask would be the best suited for a film adaptation. This proves it. It isn’t really up for debate that this game has some of the most well fleshed out characters in the whole franchise. It balances the line between whimsical fantasy and sheer terror like the other games just don’t do as well. The characters all have their own motives and personalities yet leave a lot for addition of needed. There is just so much. The fact that this was made for a TH-cam short film is almost insulting. This belongs in a museum. It is astonishingly beautiful and captures exactly the emotions the game wanted to tell. The movie wouldn’t work as live action though. This is why. There is something about the cartoon aspect of Zelda, especially Majora’s Mask, that blends with the darker aspects that can’t be recreated in live action. Incredible work is an understatement. The fact that this isn’t in theaters is sad. Then again, at this level of quality, it would take years to complete.
I'm thinking more of a Samurai Jack style mini-series so we can follow Link doing more than the main story. They should definitely still cut some stuff like the mask kids on the moon but the masks themselves could be collected as part of a darkest hour as Link has to come to terms with not being able to save everyone.
Alejandro Silva this animation probably took ages to make...but I think the depiction of the mask traveler is a bit off, it doesn't match how we see him in the actual game, but, it would be impossible to depict him in this without a tiny bit of personality changes, gotta congratulate them for it anyways. I could never accomplish even minute of what they've done.
In the manga it portrays the mask traveler as literally going way out of his way to find this mask even though he knew the consequences of obtaining this mask then when he went through the woods it's almost like he brought it upon himself and the skull kid got a hold of it....in the end when Link was still in his Fierce Deity form he tried to cut the mask salesman's head off saying "Beat it, Trouble maker" (seriously Fierce is putting it mildly)
... yeah... the mask wasn't as predictable as one might think... and the mask salesman wasn't as kind as he's portrayed... but the skull kid... was literally a puppet in the clutches of an ill tempered being... it isn't a happy tale... but the outcome is still up for debate, concerning Link... hopefully no one will jump to conclusions... after all, they're not yet acquainted with his inventiveness, nor with the issue of him making some of the possibilities able to be done... he did actually speak for himself... it's just not said in the game... and he made his own devices when necessary, for the next need during battle, and to get places for instance that weren't reachable for the moment... someone simply kept taking Zelda, and they kept saving her repeatedly... at first...
@@leonelmolina6198 Lmao that was one part that got me too. I never thought about seeing MM in a more realistic setting and while its cool, part of me is hella happy I didnt have to see THIS as a child.

It wont be as nice as this the time and money it would cost too make such a film would be ridicules. there would be tons of cut backs for anyone too even afford such a film, this was only 4min and 30sec's not that big of a deal compared to a full length movie is you add in all the factors
Holy crap. If they could only make the game look like this. This was incredibly intense. I am amazed by the looks of that forest, the lighting the sounds, simply everything.
manuel valenzuela I have but the scary shit of LOZ TP is so in your face i mean zant is creepy asf don't get me wrong but in majora's mask it's the subtle things that scare me like for instance on the final day if you go too romani ranch cremia gave chateau romani (which contains alcohol) to romani so that she would be drunk and sleepy and wouldn't notice that the moon is gonna destroy termina. Cremia wanted too spend the last moments with her little sister while she was happy and not scared. That is in my opinion for a kids game very dark..
Except Majoras Mask is literally about Link going through the stages of accepting his death from Ocarina of Time, that's pretty fucked up for a kids game.
Honestly, the game says he straight up attacked and stole it from the Salesman lol. This version makes more sense to me, because he was always painted as curious, nosy, and kinda obnoxious, but never 'evil' until he got the mask.
This ends way too early. The atmosphere, cinematography, music, even the salesman's voice invokes the emotion of the game better than the game itself. In that, it actually displays how the game makes you feel. So much passion. Amazing.
They made their own models, textures, and music. They aren't making a profit off this. What right does Nintendo have to take it down just because its REALLY good fan art? If anything, it's an incredible piece to add to their portfolios :)
Julie Carroll so like how tarantulas and other animals shed their skin, also it’s not just the mask but the boots and chest plating aswell so is Botw link wearing the hero of times skin???
@Sparticus Booker Those cartoons have some age to them. Just because the 1929 Mickey Mouse cartoon where a Reaper commands Mickey Mouse to play a piano exists. Does not mean those are not old cartoons as well.
if they ever make a Zelda movie...this studio whoever did this needs to make the movie. this is my favorite game of all time. I'm 31 and STILL play this game over and over and over...love majora mask.
This is incredible. I usually don't like this kind of CGI heavy fanart, but here, not only the look of everything is incredible and absolutely stunning, but the lights, the pace, the animation, the editing (both visual and audio), the visual choices, any single storytelling tool is sharp as it can be. The cut at 0:47/0:48, the beak mask (I can't recall if that was a Nintendo idea to begin with), the unfocused/lovecraftian shot at 3:11, the way he pulls away his hand at 3:32. If I had to nitpick, I think that the Happy Mask Salesman it's a little too much 'human' when in the game has a creepy feeling, but I understand this choice in the context of this specific work. I wish Nintendo could hire the team behind this and start a movie or a tv show.
I think the correct way to address it would be: "I usually don't show much interest for this type of fan short films" -- because CGI is a broad term. Paint images are CGI, Photoshop edited pictures are CGI, Cinema4D final product is CGI and so on.
I agree, the CGI is awesome and the presentation is sharp. My only nitpick is the rendering of Tatl & Tael which looks less ball-of-light and more floating marbles.
Revisiting this again after a few years. What I love the most about this is how you need no context or understanding of the original game, and no knowledge of Legend of Zelda to find this fascinating, engaging, and terrifying. Beautifully well done. Would love a Legend of Zelda movie in this style.
@@lordshivonski6149 if you crazy people think you can somehow make a coherent 2 hour movie out of a game that has multiple divergent plot threads and time travel, you're out of your mind. Even if you only focused on the bare bones story of finding 4 giant men to catch the moon and end the apocalypse, depending on how you look at there's simultaneously too much and too little information. Focus only on link, a little boy who never talks and has a borderline imaginary friend who follows him around while he moves blocks around to open doors and fight a context-less monster. Or you bring in all the other characters who merely exist to guide you to this goal, and on their own aren't really interesting at all. The handful of side characters that could be considered interesting are largely irrelevant to the story, like kafe, malon, the zora singer, others i'm forgetting off the top of my head. Most of the people that would want a movie are just thinking of seeing link fight the skull kid on some cool set-piece, while giving no thought on how you would actually end up there in a satisfying way ie most of the movie.
Wow. Fantastic. The salesmen himself looks relatively human, but there is still something deeply unsettling. All those details, right down to the pack and the masks. Skull Kid transformation was something else.
Thats crazy that this was released 6 years ago. I love the style, and if nintendo is gonna do a majoras mask themed movie, I hope it has this kind of horror vibe to it.
*Krampus_510* I think when the OP says "newest engine" that is referring to what the hypothetical Majora's Mask remake would be like if it was done on a modified version of the Breath of the Wild engine, with a similar art style (a blend of cartoon art and realism). I don't think they are suggesting a game that would feature gameplay that matches the quality of the footage in this trailer. Although that would, in fact, be amazing, I assume they understand the natural limitations that would be necessary to keep development of such a game within a reasonable timeframe. Although, I will say that with the Legend of Zelda series, Nintendo clearly prefers to spend the time needed to get the games right, as demonstrated both by the six years they spent developing Breath of the Wild, and the overwhelmingly impressive end result.
Pedro Gonzalez they didn't ruin anything. The things that they changed were actually major inprovements like the owl statues saving so that you could get off quicker when you have to go to dinner, and the bomber's notebook being more useful with detailed schedules and better quest descriptions. In my book, they didn't really change anything, just added fetueres that would enhance the gameplay. Majora's mask on N64 had to be made in 6 mounths.
This is mind bogglingly good! There is not a single thing I would change about it. The soundtrack, voice acting, style, visual effects, character design... EVERYTHING is perfect.

El Universo de Dave Kranz the biggest problems with game movies is that they can only bring a linear experience while games do the exact opposite. Games give you freedom to make out your actions and do what you want, while a movie is just a scripted character. The legend of Zelda wouldn't be a good game to turn into a movie, because link is a projection of the player character, and that's a huge problem for directors because that means you have to create a character that everyone can relate to, EVERYONE. Game movies without the protagonist I don't see much of a problem with, albeit new characters would have to be introduced and characters would have to be filled in more in order to work.
It'd be interesting. MM deals largely with death. Even if you don't believe the fan theories about Termina being purgatory for Link's soul after death you can't deny that death itself is still a major theme running through the game's story.

I’ve never seen this side of Majora’s Mask before. I mean, I know the story of Skull Kid and the giants, but this... This is a totally different way of looking at things. The mask was the villain, Skull Kid was the victim. This perfectly captures that sentimentality.

to play devil's advocate for a second, this was almost certainly made during free time as a hobby project, and those projects get done when they're done. despite having a lot of money behind them, professional movies have to abide by a schedule for a lot of reasons, so it's rare to see a CG movie that looks about as good as it possibly could have looked for the time it was made. no matter how much money you throw at a project, in many ways, it cannot replace time.

Tabby Cat yes, it was rather dark.. it gave me chills. This is damn good work, and they should make it into a feature film! Too bad it didn’t have Link and Epona meeting up with Skull Kid!
Same!
FBN Flavius Broadcasting Network that scream wasnt him trying to stay in control, it was because so much power went into him that he briefly died and wanted that mask off asap
If anyone makes a Majora movie it HAS to be dark.
This would be amazing haha

Factsss
“Then again, at this level of quality, it would take years to complete.” I’ve got some news for you about movies: they all do.
I'm thinking more of a Samurai Jack style mini-series so we can follow Link doing more than the main story. They should definitely still cut some stuff like the mask kids on the moon but the masks themselves could be collected as part of a darkest hour as Link has to come to terms with not being able to save everyone.
If the Super Mario Bros. Pixar movie dose well, I hope we do get Zelda, Earthbound, Metroid, F- Zero, and StarFox soon after.
Sorry but no, something of this quality, with the lights and shading, takes YEARS.

Alejandro Silva true dat
THIS should have been the commercial for the game
Alejandro Silva this animation probably took ages to make...but I think the depiction of the mask traveler is a bit off, it doesn't match how we see him in the actual game, but, it would be impossible to depict him in this without a tiny bit of personality changes, gotta congratulate them for it anyways. I could never accomplish even minute of what they've done.
In the manga it portrays the mask traveler as literally going way out of his way to find this mask even though he knew the consequences of obtaining this mask then when he went through the woods it's almost like he brought it upon himself and the skull kid got a hold of it....in the end when Link was still in his Fierce Deity form he tried to cut the mask salesman's head off saying "Beat it, Trouble maker" (seriously Fierce is putting it mildly)
... yeah... the mask wasn't as predictable as one might think... and the mask salesman wasn't as kind as he's portrayed... but the skull kid... was literally a puppet in the clutches of an ill tempered being... it isn't a happy tale... but the outcome is still up for debate, concerning Link... hopefully no one will jump to conclusions... after all, they're not yet acquainted with his inventiveness, nor with the issue of him making some of the possibilities able to be done... he did actually speak for himself... it's just not said in the game... and he made his own devices when necessary, for the next need during battle, and to get places for instance that weren't reachable for the moment... someone simply kept taking Zelda, and they kept saving her repeatedly... at first...
First time seeing this. It's beautiful. When skull kid puts the mask on, and his laugh becomes more sinister, I got literal chills. So good
I wish it ended with the classic "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" Because it would have just been absolutely perfect imo

This would be amazing if they remade the game with the newest engine and all new character models and textures. Wow this would be incredible.
Sky Rasmus there is a fanmade wii u trailer for this game
Sky Rasmus I agree they tried to do this with the 3ds version but they fucked up by changing things in game we want the same game with better graphics
Sky Rasmus I don't even think the switch can handle this but if Nintendo can make a console that can, plz make this a game
This is mind bogglingly good! There is not a single thing I would change about it. The soundtrack, voice acting, style, visual effects, character design... EVERYTHING is perfect.

ToastyAstronaut but what if they had someone project their character into the movie's link
Right? Thank you!
Let's face it yall, this would be a kick ass horror movie
I could see that.
Yess! XD
Chin Chin let's face it, in today's time, it'd just be some drama where link has an affair with Romani or some crap like that
It'd be interesting. MM deals largely with death. Even if you don't believe the fan theories about Termina being purgatory for Link's soul after death you can't deny that death itself is still a major theme running through the game's story.
Chin Chin yeah and the only one I'd watch
The fact that this is 6 YEARS OLD APPARENTLY makes me wonder even more why we don't have a movie yet, because this looks SO GOOD
The fact that this imp made by a random youtube channel looks better than sonic pains me
Designed by committee are the worst 3 words in existence

Seamus the Shameful this if from the Legend Of Zelda
A man that has the most powerful mask in the world
Keeps it in the back of a bag
This guy is a genius
T e m m i e if you would have looked carefully majora's mask is the only one he isn't carrying inside the bag its the only one he carrys with some kind of leather cord
He was trying to keep the mask safe from the world, wearing it would have been madness and he knew this.
T e m m i e Sometimes the best way to hide something is to hide it in plain sight.
+coolpurple00 DID U JUST QUOTE ESCAPE THE NIGHT-SEASON 2'S RECENT EPISODE!?!??!?!??!
The Happy Mask Salesmen is actually a smart person! He knows a lot of mystic powers and is thought to be a sorcerer himself!
Skull kid: takes off beak.
Also skull kid: i am groot
Christopher Mabry the beak threw me
Honestly my thought every time I see this
I thought that skull kid was a bird-like wood kid, but NO
Skull kid is basically a cursed kokiri, who are related to koroks. Koroks and skullkids have no facial features so they tend to wear masks. It’s pretty depressing story. The masked sales man isn’t some person either he’s an ancient god of deceit, thus he sells people masks in the literal and figurative sense.
Should we put him in a ship?
These people have a knack for beautiful visuals. Shows with this project and also with Kena
I dont need it
I dOnT nEeD iT
I DEFINITELY DONT NEED IT
I NEEEDDD ITTTTT!!!!!!!!!
WE need it!
I was thinking that same reference
WEEEEEE NEEEEEEEEEED IT
It can be a trailer for a Zelda movie
Let band together and storm Nintendo HQ and demand this movie. WHO'S WITH ME!✊
I would pay to see a Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess movie.... but I would kill to see a legend of Zelda Mjora’s Mask movie
And I will pillage and burn to see an Ocarina of Time movie.
@@DarkCreed agreed
Just whatever it takes to see any LoZ movie
Do all three, become a pirate.
I wouldn't pay a cent to see a cdi zelda movie
I would die for a Zelda movie made for Nintendo by you guys !!!!!
I know right?? I want to see a second part to this soooo incredibly bad! I can't imagine how much money and work it took to create this. I'd pay 1000 times to see this movie on the day its released..hell I'd wait 24 hours in line just to see this.
There will be no second part but this is the actually an unofficial origin of how Majora's Mask started.
Then you wouldn't be able to see it
Dragon Alchemy I'd sit in line for a week!
Philip Fill given that it is done as competently as this here!!! If the suits & penny pinchers jam the cogs of creativity, it doesn't matter how good it looks, especially if it's a PoS!!!
I remember watching this in second grade, one of the best animations i’ve seen
I'm not even a Zelda fan, but I'm already thinking this would make an amazing movie!
Verdade
You are now
Saw this in 2016: Loved it, showed it to my whole family.
Seeing this in my recommended in 2019: Loved it again, showing it to my whole family again.
God, if Majora's Mask was remastered like this nothing would stop me from getting the current gen Nintendo console.
Yeah, hate to break it to you, but not even the best of the best PCs could run a game that looks like this.
FullMetalBiscuit Not true Theres Photo Realistic Games already but they are a pain in the ass to run
the 1070 and 1080 are likely gpu's able to do this sort of thing.
+Lauren Uhlir nah it would cost you: arm, leg and body of a random person just for lolz
best of pcs? your kidding, a computer with 8 gigs of ram can run WWE2K16 extremely well
Seeing this with now after the news of a live-action Zelda in the works makes this way more sad.
This is so well done.
Leave it fans to make a better film than anything Hollywood could ever produce
I would pay good money to see a movie of this. Amazing work.
If Majoras Mask was a horror movie then holy crap this would be the best horror movie of all time. Look at this, and tell me you wouldn't say that Majoras Mask wouldn't be scary. This video was terrifying but amazing.
CMB Chris majoras mask might as well be called a horror movie.
Majora's Mask was scary af. The moon scared the frick out of me, still does.
That's when Fierce Deity steps in
CMB Chris I would
Majoras Mask is a dark game.
I have an idea, im being 200% serious with this...
Why dont we start a gofundme for them and raise money for them to create a legit movie for us. This is something im sure we can all agree and support.
Haha i don't think Nintendo would let that come to pass.
@@woweezowee5826 but if they partnered with nintendo
Someone give this guy 100 million likes cause THIS is something we can do today
Because the reason LoZ hasn;t been made in to a film has nothing to do with money, and nothing to do with finding a studio. Nintendo doesn't let their properties get made in to film. Thank the 90's Mario Bros film for that.
@@shibarinos7079 partnering with Nintendo would probably be the best bet. How the hell do we even bring the idea to NIntendo's attention?
It's now 7 years since this was posted and it's still phenomenal. Time to make a movie
That was actually more terrifying and disturbing than most horror movies out there.
What horror movies have you seen? Lmao
@@jaydens.2526 I recently mustered all my courage and strength and watched the deathnote movie. Not gonna lie it was disturbing. ;)
Watch the shining
Watch the original poltergeist lmao-
Thomas Burri 😱
Did people hear that the people who made this are making a ps5 title called Kena: Bridge of Spirits? Glad they're getting the recognition they deserve.
That right?
@@PROTOBLUES90 Yes, if you look on the Ember Labs website, they are creating Kena Bridge of Spirits
they should try to make this aswell!
@@Tmb7evvvvv Any way we could potentially make this happen? This is the remake we all deserve. :)
@@msc281 I have no idea but we should try!
After seeing this who wants a cgi movie made for Majora's Mask?
+better late than ever because the super mario bro's movie was such a hit.
Animating Sponge that was then this is now. film has come so far. Nintendo needs to take another chance
better late than never i think i would prefer a twilight princes movie
Predador 2000 that would be cool. maybe both since the skull kid is in both
its true :v xD ivent notice xD
I’ve never seen this side of Majora’s Mask before. I mean, I know the story of Skull Kid and the giants, but this... This is a totally different way of looking at things. The mask was the villain, Skull Kid was the victim. This perfectly captures that sentimentality.
Who made this? They deserve an award for this animation.
Rohaan Asad/BNDHAL yeah but they animated all the figures so still-
Rohaan Asad/BNDHAL and forgive me if im wrong but all the people credited were hired/wanted to work on the project so they all contributed uvu
Skullkid was so cute.
@The Game Theory Theory Are you trying to sound dumb?
Sir Bibton why did u like ur own comment
... Have you considered a career with Pixar? Seriously, this is AMAZING!!! The textures are extremely realistic, the backgrounds are capturing, the animation is smooth, the story is great, and I can't think of a better execution of atmosphere!
C Seamon And the lighting and the shading are amazing too!
C Seamon this is definitely not got Pixar style lol maybe um.... Nintendo or Funimation
Andre King I was referring to the quality, not style, but I still agree.
If you watch the making of, the background isn't animated, they used real sets and then filled it with CGI for the characters, so still impressive but the shading and backgrounds weren't rendered
Daniel Dean Wow, I never noticed that before...
this really makes you weep for skull kid. homie so innocent in all this.
That part. Most look at him as evil
@@bradykay9322 I look at him as "I AM GROOT"
I just saw it again. Can’t believe this was made in 2016. BY A SMALL TEAM OF PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!?????? These guys should be known worldwide for this!! This is better than most CGI films in 2022! Wtf?
One thing this short does really well is make the Happy Mask Salesman seem human.
It made the mask seller seem human, and made me feel SORRY for Skull Kid.
NikkisorousRex well skull kid isn't a bad person
he is just a lost child, who turned into a forest imp and as children do, played pranks on people. he just got really unlucky and "pranked" the wrong person. someone who happened to be carrying a very dangerous mask... and well, he became a victim of curiosity and just some shit luck
well, at the very least we assume he was "pranked" he could have been asleep for all we know
Well now I really need to finish the game.
Wtf ....... How ??Is this possible ?? This looks ... o_o . Wow. The cinematography .....This is amazing and 100% how majorask mask should look and even better. This is perfect
Yep making good movies out of games IS possible.
watch the making of. this forest is real!
One word: Dang!
YES
