I love how death isn't portrayed as malicious, but a curious being who just wants to explore and have a friend
Being Death is hard. The hardest bit is living with no one to hold in your arms...
The deer's death...
"Death Buy Lemonade" shows death in a very similar way, and "Grave Mistake" shows Death as actually caring about who dies, and brings back people who shouldn't have.
:)
u love death?
The moral is: we should not fear death. We should live with it. When the time comes we should meet it with understanding.
wonderfully said
couldn't have said it better
Just the way he says it makes my heart wrenching worse, but is well said. You can definately see it in the deer (doe?) 's actions.
Inkblood
Lol, feel better?
I wouldn't call it a moral -- that would constitute right and wrong -- and while the thought is poignant, and certainly romantic (in the actual sense of the word), it does seem a rather cliché platitude, and personally, I would think it arrogant to not fear death: there is nothing wrong with being terrified of finality.
Death was ashamed of himself, hating to have to kill beautiful things. All he wanted was friends and fun. The deer helped Death realize that nobody is angry at him, and that letting his friends move on is caring for them.
Death is reality
Well said......
Επιτέλους ενας ανθρωπος που καταλαβε το νοημα της ταινιας
He wasn't ashamed of himself. He just realized that he held the power of taking life with one touch of his hand. And it's not that he wanted that power, in fact you could see that he struggled with it, but it was his task and he understood it and knew what it meant. In the end, he reluctantly gave rest to his best friend, and felt the grief of it. I think if I had to think of it in a spiritual sense I could imagine G-d loving us just as death loved the little deer. But like death, G-d realizes that He must deliver us to our death. Though it hurts, he does it. But it doesn't mean He doesn't love us. It's simply our time.
@@mrswilliamstoyou3325Amen🙏
Notice that towards the end, the rest of the pack leave, but Death's friend start to struggle to breath and stand. She knew what death was and knew it was her time. Those little details just make this story that much more beautiful and heart wrenching.
That moment when they hug
I could feel the deer saying
"thank you for everything"

I love the way death was drawn as a human, but with animalistic motion. The way he sits, the way he lays down... It's very visually interesting, making him seem like a whole different sort of creature
I liked that too. But did anyone else wonder why the grass didn't wilt when Death touched it when it laid down next to the deer?
Yea hes cute ;( he's sad
Thats very sad😰
I think he was mimicking the deer...
I just saw this on facebook
The kid is dying and life and death are watching the kid survived it and life screamed "yay another point for life" and life look at death and death said "haha i love losing to you life" and then life said "don't worry i know my people will have a beautiful place when they die i trust you death" and in my mind i realized why are we angry with death i mean he frees us from suffering and just accompanies us to somewhere and not really take our life.
My kitty cat passed a month ago. I hope death was as gentle to her as it is depicted in this movie. I love you, Noki. ‘Til death did us part.
Very sad to know about your cat RIP
Sorry to hear about your cat. Death is a very misunderstood being, nobody is exempt from dying.

Why, out of all the short movies that get all these awards, has this one never garnered any? I found this five years ago and I showed it to my kids. Now they request it. May they learn (as I have) that Death is an old friend!
13 Million views and 89000 Comments and still going... It's more than recognised. Worth more than any award.
It itself needs no reward after being a rewardful story
In my opinion, the character of "Death" touches the animals not to kill them but because he wants to touch something, to play, to have an embrace. This is clearly evident when he touches the flower and it withers immediately, shocking him. So in the end, the deer chooses him to touch and give him the embrace he was seeking. It was time for her to die. This is apparent because the deer seems to tremble and not be well when the others depart. Very, very touching from every perspective.
She was ready to go and her last wish was to be loved by her friend. Beautiful and real...WAAAAAAA!
Calm down bruh
This story made me cry, but I realized, there comes a time when we all need to take a rest.

I never imagined that death can be represented in such a beautiful manner
The way Death gently lowers her to the ground 🥺

Hats off to u dude.
Death loomed over her. Over the many years that it followed her she got closer and closer to it. Sleeping along side her, being with her while she ate, and watching over her family. Over time she grew old, weary, or sick. She knew it was time... As her family left the forest to graze she stopped. Pausing only for a moment and looked back to the death that had watched over her. She walked towards it calmly. She had lived her life; with understanding and trust she embraced death. The friend that would come for her and all that followed.

Notice how all of the other animals lay down immediately and fell into slumber the moment Death touched them, but in the deer's case, at 3:40 it did not, as Death (I guess) himself don't accept it, but seeing the deer tolerating the pain, Death hugged it with acceptance and peace. Just a realization that made me cry even more.

+Marsha Onderstijn One Question: The Deer and "Death" had a very good time together. So why did they end it?
+Admiral Domo Look at 3:15. The Deer just got old and couldnt run off with everyone anymore. Thats what happens to everyone, if you get old you are not fast enough anymore. The Deer accepted that and touched Death to be released from her (i assume) pain because it was her time to die.

I felt bad for death because it's so lonely but then I realized that death is every living thing's companion in the end. And thank God for that or our pain and suffering in declining bodies would be eternal. Wonderful work of art. Well done!
I love how you made the Death so nice and gentle, shows how he doesnt mean to do harm to anyone, he just does what hes meant to. Even tho he makes the animals die, he does it as gently as he can. Also you can see how every single time he feels bad for the animals that die, but its just their destiny, its just time for them to go. And he learned about it later thanks to the deer he loved so much. He didnt want to hurt it, but it accepted that its time for it.

In my freshman year of high school I wrote a story for an assignment that was heavily inspired by this animation.
imagine just waking up and be like "Oh yes, I'm gonna make 11 million people cry!"
We already cry about death. Adding a little beauty to the terror may not be so bad.
Yup
Death is sad because we’ve cultured it to be sad. Obviously because loved ones are no longer with us, but we choose to look at our own loss and rather than celebrate the life they’ve lived and moved on from, and rarely look at it as peaceful end to pain. Almost seems self-centred and egocentric, really. I like Neil Gaiman’s Death as portrayed in the Sandman comics; young, pretty, friendly, intelligent, warm, and reassuring rather than a dark and foreboding being. If you’ve never read it, I highly recommend the series.
@@travisjg80 It is indeed self centered. But we literally can't call these people up any more to catch up on things, to shoot the breeze. And the ache in our hearts sometimes never ever subsides until the day finally arrives in which we may join them--usually not soon, usually not today. So what are we to do but be sad?
Yes, yes, our roles now as survivors are to go out and to gather more stories with which to bring to the afterlife and to share with our loved ones. But upon forming each story the instinct is to share it--now!--and the one for whom it's designated can no longer respond.
lol, u cried?

.And I couldn't do anything for him, I could only look, he was young, he was only six months old, he had a lot of time to live

@@inkadinkadoodle yeah, i live on a forest property not too far off a medium-used road, we had a mother and baby fawn that lived on our property for a long time we loved to see them. but one day, we were driving out of our driveway and the little fawn had been hit while trying to cross the road...i cried in the car all the way to wherever we were going
sometimes it's because movies try to hard to be sad
Because movies these days are assembly built, piece by piece by cold heartless robots who design it to be as bland, safe, generic and as inoffensive as possible so there's no heart or soul to it. Oh I'm sorry my bad, those aren't heartless robots they're studio execs. Much worse.
@@Demogorgon47 totally agree
When the time came, i will greet death as an old friend but for now i will stay alive and experience all the things that an average human can experience. I love this, i get back here every time as a reminder to cherish everything i build and experienced.
one of the most beautiful videos i've ever seen. thank you so much!
This is the most profound depiction of Death I have ever seen. Death is not evil. Death just is. I have walked with Death almost my entire life, and seeing "him" in this fashion struck a chord with me. To see Death appreciate life, and seeing lives acknowledge Death is somewhat freeing. Death is a release from Earthly bonds. Thank you so much for making this. It shows that Death has a heart, too.
Your comment filled me with curiosity. How is it that you have "walked with death" all your life? Are you a coroner or doctor?
@@nerdstalgia we all are walking with death. Death is always with us.we don't know when and how we will die.you can die anytime
@Nerdstalgia Either they had near death experiences many times
Les gens ne veulent que du cour à lire
@@nerdstalgia maybe he got a tumor or a disease that can kill him at any moment? Or hes doing a metaphor like how the deer in the video "walked with death"?
I rarely cry when I see a sad story or hear one, but this actually made me really, really emotional
Lol
Same it’s so sad
@@isabellahayes337 same here I’ve almost never cried but this made me real emotional
Agrreeee
feel that. ive been crying for 5 minutes now lol
How beautiful! So glad to get to see this very creative and inspired work. It really touched my heart. Thank you for sharing this! 🙂🩵
Its truly beautiful. Death who falls in love with the deer wants her to live her long beautiful life with him by her side and the deer who wants his companionship along the way. The moral of this film is to not fear death but to walk with him by your side as a friend and to welcome him home when its time to go.
These comments are getting deep
Every time I watch this
Me: I'm not gonna cry
Deer: **dies in deaths arms**
"A waterfall was created"

I was a kid when I first watched this and i baeled my eyes out, year later when I rewvisit this video im still unable to stop the years spilling
Imagine being death and you just want to make friends and learn how to love
*DEPRESSION*
He is really afraid of making someone his friend because when someone becomes his friend, he/she will definitely come close to him and when he/she comes closer to him then.....................
but it feels good to realise at the end that you're not death and that you can make freinds, love, touch and hug all things♡
@NoMoreMr NiceGuy I think you're exactly my type jajaja.. just kidding I mean just don't be an ass and be nice buddy, hope u find ur best person ever❤
Ok
I sometimes wonder if death ever regrets being death himself like if death is conscious does he ever regret taking all of those lives?
Does he ever just want to give up or does death even have feelings to begin with
Some questions i suppose that are not possible to have an answer to
