I can remember when I was a kid, pre-internet, there were letter chains that would be like "send a dollar here and you'll get 100 back." As soon as BBSs and email were adopted, they switched to that. Invading social media was the next logical spillage spot of this toxic waste. The sad thing is I even personally know people that have made hundreds of thousands of dollars in "scams" like this. It's pure craziness.
