this was Emerson's band The Best, formed in London in 1990, featuring John Entwistle (bass), Joe Walsh and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on guitars and Simon Phillips (drums). this was some of the last footage prior to Emerson's health problems that hampered his technical skills

So many who listened to him didn't even appreciate the full range of what they were hearing. The man was a walking musical encyclopedia. Chopin, Richard Rodgers, Bernstein, Brubeck, ancient Japanese folk music, Prokofiev, Britten, Bach (played from the backside of the keyboard!), tied together with Emerson's original stuff -- and all that in one 13 minute concert segment.

Older people used to think Liberace was a great piano player, on TV in the 50s and 60s with his fancy clothing but they need to take a look at rock and roll music where they will find some of the finest musicians in history. One such example of three excellent rock musicians together is ELP, blowing away everyone else for years. Keith was just amazing and this video is great proof of his endless talents. There are many other fine keyboard players in rock such as Steve Winwood and Elton John and Rick Wakeman but Keith was superb. So sad that he left us too soon.

I'm a young pianist/keyboardist and just recently discovered prog rock through Yes. Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson are an enormous new inspiration for me. When I discovered these two guys, I heard things I'd never thought possible on a keyboard, I am so happy these two have broadened my musical understanding and creativity, and heartbroken to find out of Emerson's passing. His playing is absolutely timeless and will inspire, awe, and amaze people for ever.

I second ashley tart's comment...welcome and good luck. Play like it's your last day and you want to blow everyone away and remember you forever!!! Learn as much as you can from as many people as you can!!! There is so much great prog music out there. Emerson and Wakeman are a good start and they epitomized the prog keyboard player at the time. But there are many who came after as well.

Check out Lyle Mays of Pat Metheny Group - one of my favs next to Keith, also Chick Corea/ Return to Forever. Rod Argent does a smoking' solo in "Hold your Head Up" (as does Tom Scholtz in Boston's "Smokin'"). Eddie Jobson of UK is unbelievable as well, and of course Kerry Livgren & Steve Walsh from Kansas are no slouches, either.

The two of them Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman probably won't ever be equaled. Emerson has to be from another planet. Close your eyes and you'd swear that he must have 6 arms. I've been to two of their concerts back in the middle 1970s.

Emerson was a true master of his craft and, I reckon, a typical Yorkshireman - modest, thoughtful, and with a great sense of humour. We'll never see his like again.

He is the greatest, the best, a God, not only in keys, but as a musician as a whole. An incomparable talent. I listen to his music on a daily basis. He always makes me happy. I would love to thank Keith Emerson for everything he's done in his whole life. I am a keyboard player and I can tell you Keith is from another planet because no one and I mean no one can play like Keith Emerson. May have heard this a million billion times but I think I'm his number one fan. I would not be playing the piano or synthesizers today if it were not for Keith. Pure musical genius.

I actually had the pleasure to meet him. Keith was my idol and I have to thank him and Greg and Carl for giving me a lifetime of great music. I've been playing the piano for 20 years and need about another 120 to be as good as Mr Keith Emerson. Like I said without a doubt the greatest keyboard player of all time

One of the saddest days of my life was when my brother called me and gave me the news because he knew how much of a fan I was. I have started Keith's fingering movements on the keys and like I said he's from another planet. I seen him play two songs at the same time. Two Christmas songs. Try that my ELP friends. If you are a keyboard player, you would know it's just about impossible and the way he did it was totally impossible but he pulled it off with no problem , a pure genius musical genius

I was 13 when I heard Toccata. (A miracle behind the iron curtain.) I still remember the shivers down the spine sitting by the old tape recorder. That was a moment for a lifetime. Nowadays, well over 50, I can hear all kind of fantastic music being made, but there hasn't been a year without those weeks of ELP mood on me since that Toccata.
    Bless you.

This music is so demanding to play!
But clearly, no compromise is allowed.
Keith Emerson was never about holding anything back---For Keith, it was "balls to the wall", almost nonstop.
Incredible energy and explosiveness, permeated with personality and flavor --
    A timeless combination.

Keith was King. He was thee greatest player, pioneer, composer and showman. As great as Rick Wakeman, Patrick Moraz and many outstanding contemporaries of Keith were, Keith was on a much higher level. Keith was too much of a gentle men to ever accept this, but this the truth.
I'm so upset he is gone. He did not realize how important he was to all of us. Schumann ruined his hand from his passion to be a great pianist so he concentrated on composition. Keith will be missed for a long time to come. What a horrific loss.

Mad respect for Emerson's musical ability, and the form of his passing was a tragedy of the highest order. If anything, this world needs TALENT and Keith had it in spades!
It's too bad that the strength of his mental/physical illnesses exceeded his willingness to live (and seek professional help) in the end. Even if he was diminishing physically by his sixties/seventies, to the point where he could no longer play according to own professional expectations, he still had SO MUCH to give to the arts/the musical community!
Had he the capacity to live and learn to ADAPT according to his newfound limits (and let go of the insignificant online naysayers and trolls), he easily, in my opinion, could have continued to have a significant impact on music (and carved out a decent living) through musical composition, record production, teaching, writing, speaking, counseling, mentoring - whatever!
That said, to have that all potential lost suddenly (and forever) through a self-inflicted gunshot wound, not to mention the resulting, long-term impact on his loved ones, was a big loss for the musical world AND HUMANITY IN GENERAL. Hopefully, there are (or will be) others talented enough to step up and fill in this man's mighty shoes and legacy! Long live ELP and Keith Emerson!!! LL

Yes. Here is a brief synopsis. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake got together when their respective groups the nice and King Crimson we're performing on the same bill. Both musicians felt that their groups had pretty much come to a dead end as far as they were concerned and decided to hook up. After auditioning several drummers including Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix experience they decided on Carl Palmer who along with Vincent crane. Just started Atomic rooster. They came together to form the first supergroup ELP in 1970. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. What's weird is that Vincent crane with atomic rooster committed suicide just like Emerson did in later years. I hope that helps

Now if you're talkin about this particular group I believe Simon Phillips is the drummer and he was pretty much a session player who played with Jeff Beck amongst others. Of course the bass player is John Entwistle who played with the who. You probably know this so to answer your question I'm not exactly sure how they hooked up for this particular project.
