It's a really hard to play tune even if you wrote it, because of the many changes, and they just pull it off without a hitch. They were always excellent musicians with outstanding skill, add their story telling quality in a lyrical/literary sense, and they had a surplus of artistry.
Still hard to believe I got to experience this live last year, absolutely fantastic. What an incredibly gifted musician, what a great band, what a fitting lead vocalist.
Amazing footage and sound, but very sad watching KE struggling with his focal dystonia even back then. You can see how his little, ring and even middle finger are constantly 'curled under' and stretching even an octave is difficult for him. If you watch earlier footage of him as a younger man, you can see just how easy it all seemed for him by comparison. Tough watch....
Kudos to ELP for keeping on keeping on. Equally this Montreux film crew should be applauded for this excellent filming and editing as well as the superb audio quality. Whoever is responsible for the recording's quality is to be thanked almost as much as ELP themselves.
I have toured the world as a guitar tech, but I have to admire Keith's keyboard tech for keeping up with all of the connections, routing and what not! Sounds like a big job.🥵
@@jamesalfano5740 One of the guy's from Tangerine Dream (Peter Bauman if I'm Correct) had some german hand made modular synth setup, with a bunch of arpeggiators, loopers and a whole bunch of other stuff. It was a wall nearly 25' across and 5' high, complete with like 5 techs running around changing cable patches between, and even during pieces! So in 1970 already, he had like 6 keyboard "tracks" (electronically repeating patterns) going all at once. Sometimes he would have them at different timings creating morphing polyrhythms, cascades and canons, and pulled it off live too! 🤯🤯🤯 I bet his engineers ate well🍖🧀 and got plenty of beer!🍻🍺 (All Germans😜).
I'm very familiar with Tangerine Dream having seen them at the Tower Theatre on the Underwater Sunlight tour. Being a guitarist myself the addition of the guitarist was a plus. Edgar Froes R.I.P.
@@jamesalfano5740 I liked early TD best. Both Chris Franke and Edgar played a little guitar here and there, nothing fancy, but more in line with the synths. Edgar will be missed!😢
The riff at 0:50 is a clear example of the issue Keith had with his right hand That riff requires the hand to be spread out wide, alternating between the thumb and fingers 3 and 5, and targets exactly where Keith was experiencing hand pain. Near the end it got worse, and he played it with 2 hands, foregoing playing the bass notes with his left hand . I loved Keith and his end broke my heart ❤️ (Though I never enjoyed the phallic ribbon controller bit….😉

Keith was given the luxury to fill in the space depending on what instrument Greg Lake was playing. But they knew Keith was a force to be reckoned with.
I used to love ELP when I was a teenager beggining to play the drums. Now I feel sorry for their bad tempo live and lack of swing. I still like the music and respect them, but that "wow" feeling has long been gone.
So lucky to have these guys around when we were growing up.
R.I.P. Keith Emerson & Greg Lake 💔😔
After struggling with his voice in 92, when he starts singing tarkus it sounds deep and amazing. Miss that guy
To singing and play the base lines not such easy

One of the greatests bands ever.
Glorious!
Tarkus... one of the greates compositions of modern prog rock!
Awesome tune. My favorite from my all time favorite band Emerson Lake and Palmer I never get tired of it. I have listened to it thousands of times.

Not modern, but classic prog rock 😊
Keith Emerson has been the best keyboard player in rock history of all times. Don't doubt me.
Yes,not only rock...
I doubt you
I agree he was great, but Rick Wakeman says, hold my beer

@gianfrancoreda6944 - Stesso percorso...🙂 anche io avevo 12 anni, era il 1972.
Ascoltavo di nascosto i preziosi dischi di mio fratello. 👋👋
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
Ever wonder why there are no ELP tribute bands? Totally impossible to replicate a masterpiece ,end of story.
Now "shamans" rule in your today's "light kingdom". What they can teach new youngsters is quite predictable.
What a voice he had!
Seen a lot groups work a lot shows in NYC Hendrix Zeppelin Who super groups But ELP impressed me the most 3 guys so good what they played
Il supergruppo della mia adolescenza. Ho ancora il vinile di tarkus, pictures at an exhibition e trilogy, e ogni tanto li riascolto con piacere

When a new ELP release was coming out I was buying them blindly and never got disappointed greatest band ever.

We can't possibly put these guys in the R&R Hall Of Fame. They can play their instruments.
Incredible! Thanks so much for providing this.
