I grew up as a kid with this movie, I went to see it at the movies around a dozen times! I remember the video came out the movie hire store and they wanted $50 a week for it! You know those huge cardboard movie posters at video hire shops, well I got the Super Mario Brothers one! My family must have knew how much I’d loved Mario Bros movie because they had to put it in a small car with the boot door open just to get it in! It was around 3m in size! The memories of this movie will be with forever!
I agree about that this was the most realistic way to adapt a LIVE ACTION version of this classic game, while still trying to give it a modern 90s edge for the time. In a way it was definitely ahead of its time. While script and dialogue could have definitely been way better, the atmosphere and setting was amazing. It definitely feels like Blade Runner for kids, and the world they built was definitely one of the most ambitious of its time, very similar to films like The Fifth Element. So far I've only got the DVD (which looks like sh*t) and I'm hoping my local indie shops will get this even just in its standard form. It would be nice to get that big box edition but I really don't need all that. And to top it all off, that actress who played Daisy was a TOTAL hottie lol
I was able to order a regular version of Super Mario Bros from Grindhouse, it had no slipcover. It looked awesome and I know people complained since it wasn’t HDR. Yea it’s a silly movie and went through hell just to get made but the fact it actually got a 4K release, says it has a cult following. I’m more than happy to have this movie in my collection. That’s a nice looking collector set though.
Super Mario 64 was mindblowing back then. The free roaming 3D was more my kind of game than the original platformer, which I never had the insane reflex for. I was really bummed out when my N64 stopped functioning, even the spare one I got. But it’s available on the Nintendo subscription thing and you can download it for free and play it on your Switch. Even Goldeneye is available there, which is amazing.
That's what it'll be worth when some other lablel releases the same movie with HDR. I hope this will happen and I also think it's kind of unavoidable. The booklets of umbrellas release look really awesome however. But not $100 awesome! ;)
Would Second Sight ever do an "extra life" version of the "Dawn of the Dead" box set similar to what Umbrella is doing here for Super Mario Bros? I would be so down for that.
I don't remember hearing anything about The Super Mario Bros. movie when it came out. It could be because when it came out in May of 1993, I was graduating from high school. So I guess I had other things on my mind. Its just weird to me that I don't remember hearing anything about this moive and only heard of it years later.
Was just talking to someone at Umbrella and said Vinegar Syndrome sells their stuff and designs Umbrellas slipcovers on VS website. Also a US distributor might be a possibility soon. Hope so they are at the top for boutique labels for me right now along with Second Sight
I really like what Umbrella is doing but $65 for the slip version? I can’t, man, especially if there is a chance of me hating the movie. I have never seen it. The $7 DVD is looking awfully tempting.
I just ordered the 1UP edition, incredibly bummed they changed the outer slip design though. I think that purple slip is so much better than the 1UP's. I would have gotten it back in January if I wasn't a broke individual, I just got promoted with a pay increase and the first thing I did was go online to find that boxset and found the 1UP thinking it was the same one. Still lucked out by catching it but damn, not looking forward to the wait. I love this movie, such a huge part of my childhood and I am just happy to have such a cool edition of it to replace my battered dvd copy.
I saw this movie in theaters when I was 11 years old, so it will always have a soft spot in my heart. However to say that you can’t think of how they could have made the film differently, even back in 1993 is pretty outlandish. Even at the time it was recognized how off the casting, story and world design did not match the video games.
Crazy that a live action Mario was played by both Oscar nominee, Bob Haskins snd pro wrestler , "Captain" Lou Albano.

I had the Mario and Luigi action figures back in the day. No idea where they are now but they did exist.
Nice

Yeah she was. Also loved her in “Broken Arrow” as well.
I never thought Nintendo would release this movie.
You’ve never seen Audition?!?! Oh boy lol…you’re in for an *experience*.
Audition is Japanese not South Korean - and it's a great film, not one you'll forget afterwards!
Apologies. I should have known that. It did come out in the big Jhorror era
Ahh Ken You Want To Feel SPECIAL...
😆 🤣 😂
Always
Nothing beats playing DONKEY KONG!!! on an original Arcade game, with the original Joy stick
& Botton...

Yeah Mario 64 was mind blowing to me when I first played it. I still have it downloaded on the original Wii system.
Bummed I missed out on the big box edition of Audition. Hoping someone sells it on eBay soon.
$100 is a lot of money for this kind of movie. I snagged a 4K standard one with a slip for under $10 by some miracle on Amazon. Had to be a mistake.

@@Pushateetee83yes it did Second Sight did a blu ray release years ago
Ken have you seen Noble House?
Nope.
I hope someone does a domestic release for Mario Bros because $60 is to much for it.

Two different companies, so not sure.
Noble House is a mini series.
That explains it
Wow this video is 4 months late
I explained why

The 1993 Super Mario Bros. Movie came out two weeks before Jurassic Park, which absolutely stomped it in both marketing and hype.
Brandon Lee was supposed to be in mortal Kombat
Yeah, he was originally cast as Johnny Cage, he would've been great.
Thank you for the video ! A question ? Do you happen to know is the 1up version is it region free ?
You should see Audition. It's a masterful movie. Don't read anything about it. Let the movie surprise you.
I will definitely check it out soon
Love Umbrella Entertainment's Collector Edition's releases.
Same here Frank!
Was just talking to someone at Umbrella and said Vinegar Syndrome sells their stuff and designs Umbrellas slipcovers on VS website. Also a US distributor might be a possibility soon. Hope so they are at the top for boutique labels for me right now along with Second Sight
That would be awesome if they became more accessible in the US.

The most cursed production of all-time
Love the Hammer boxes. I hope they keep coming

Yeah, but I think that world in 1993 would have looked lame. They made the right choice going scifi
Super Mario Bros to me is comparable to movies like Jaws: The Revenge and the Highlander sequels Battlefield Earth like its uwe boll levels of bad
Definitely had Battlefield Earth vibes watching it again years later after BFE came out.
that movie is god awful. i think in some countries it considered torture to watch more than once
Was really disappointed in this Mario movie
