I can't wait to get my 4k Copy of this, Saw it twice in theatres. Both times, with a different person. And seeing their reactions in how invested and blown away they were from the visuals, Story etc. Was awesome.
Oh man I love David Lynch's dune exclamation point it's got such a surreal feel to it. And there's nothing wrong with liking David Lynch's Dune it is good
Ken, I get that you are a busy dad but c’mon. This movie has been in theaters for a looooong time. I watched this in 70mm IMAX and the sound is the best I’ve ever experienced. If you get a chance say it gets rereleased in IMAX do yourself a favor and watch it.
My wife and I really tried to go, just couldn't make it happen. The 3 hour runtime is tough to get away for. We did see "Civil War" recently in theaters though, which I feel needed a theatrical experience as well.
I had the same experience watching it the first time. I don’t think I was in the mood for it and didn’t get into it. When I watched it again, I absolutely loved it. I immediately preordered part 2 right when the movie ended.
Actually the entire movie was shot in IMAX so there is no shifting of aspect ratios. Only time that happens is like 3 moment when they are using binoculars to look through. Aside from that the entire movie is in IMAX.
I actually like all of the adaptions Of Dune but then I loved the original trilogy of books. Each adaption has its own strengths. This one may become the definitive one for the next generation or two.
Definitely agree with not wanting special features tied to digital codes! Big WTF for that. I really hope that is not going to be a growing trend. That's one of the reasons people spend the money for these movies, not just for the movie itself but for all the extras, to get the best viewing and listening quality and so that we don't have to depend on streaming services to still make them available to us five or ten years up the road. I'd rather pay an extra dollar or two for an added blu-ray if they can't fit everything on a single disc.
Yeah, part of the reason that’s a bigger deal to me than the lack of IMAX is the fact that it sets a precedent going forward with other releases. I could see them start making all the features digital only soon.
@@midlevelmedia That's when we the buyers have to start making a big stink about it and refusing to buy those releases, no matter how much we want the movies. That's really the only thing that would stop it in it tracks.
And Ken, while I'm thinking about it, what do you think of the idea that the studios might actually see this approach as a way to get more people to buy more discs? I mean, think of all the codes that you and others give away, and all the ones sold on eBay and elsewhere? Having fewer of those available "in the wild" as a cheaper (or free) alternative might translate to more people paying extra for their own disc copies. Or at least some of the studio people might be thinking that. Just a thought.
@@midlevelmedia Personally, if I had to choose between having extras available on disc and having digital codes, I'd choose the extras. Having the digital copies is good if you want to watch movies on the go, but I have to wonder how often people who buy physical media do that, since I would think that most of them would probably value the experience of watching their movies at the best possible quality on big screens. But maybe I'm in a minority. I'm always seeing people leaving negative reviews and comments because of expired codes, so maybe a lot of people buying discs ARE rewatching their movies on their phones or whatever, or maybe they just like being able to give the codes to others...?
I don't go to the theater anymore as I have my own at home.I haven't been to a movie in a theater since Transformers:Dark of the Moon.Plus being a double amputee in a wheelchair has it's limits.
The black and white scene that you mentioned looks so great was actually utilizing infrared cameras! I recommend looking up how they did the process it’s so interesting.
For Dune Part 2 on IMAX laser it was all on 1:91.1 IMAX and just few second clips that went back to 2:39.1 that’s why the consternation that we are getting the scope version. So it would have been a 1:90.1 all the way through 4K Blu ray with no shifting aspect ratios.
It does matter not having the IMAX version. I've watched the Disney Plus IMAX versions of the Marvel movies, and the black bars will either halfway disappear or fully disappear giving a larger image for the scene that is in IMAX. I love it. Give me more of that any day.
Why didn’t they just do 4k + Blu Ray combo to begin with? Since The Batman had a Special Features disc included, why not this movie’s 4k release instead of just the digital release? Oh wait…they’re pulling that shit to save them money. Also the IMAX scenes would be incredible if they actually do that in the first place.
It wasn’t shifting in the theater, it was constant IMAX ratio. However, if you poke around a little, you’ll see some other videos on this subject, he frames it so that the IMAX version is zoomed in a bit, so the IMAX has a little more information on top and bottom, while the scope version has a little more information left and right, he didn’t just get the scope version by cropping the top and bottom of the IMAX.
Yeah, I didn’t see it in theaters, so didn’t realize that. The specs on Bluray.com listed both ratios in the original aspect ratio, so I assumed it was shifting theatrically.
What is with the ragging on Ken . So what if he didn't see it in the theater. I did see it in the theater but it is only one of the two movies I've seen this year. Not much of a theater goer. I enjoyed all versions of Dune including the Sci-fi miniseries. Yes, I too read the book.
I just got the 2nd filn as the sound level was so loud at my cinema that I couldn't always hear the audio description so looking forward to watching this at ho,me and being able to hear everything , loving these films
man i couldn’t disagree more about it being meandering. to me it felt like every single scene was important and needed to be in there. for me the movie flew by and i remember thinking that i could have watched another two hours of it when it ended in the theater
I don’t get the argument against preserving the theatrical aspect ratio. It is a much higher cost? I know most people don’t care, but I’d imagine those who care about the best at home experience would want the theatrical experience? It’s a bummer. I love how big it feels when a movie takes up the entire screen. Of course I appreciate a nice wide shot like those of Lawrence of Arabia but the director intended for a taller image on some shots so it’s a shame to lose that.
Nice review my brother - I did love that black and white “coliseum” set they did in this. And man…you ain’t kidding about the ATMOS! Damn it was a reference track! I got my steelbook in early from Gruv and it is gorgeous!! Love this film and looking forward to the conclusion from Denis Villeneuve in Dune Messiah (part 3) of the trilogy.
Good review Ken thanks for keeping it real 💯. BTW what is up with no standard 1080p bluray included with the release. These companies are so greedy man, damn.
Actually, the film was too short. At the end of both parts 1 & 2, I was wanting more. The complexity and detail of the 1st book makes it difficult to adapt these stories to a less than 3 hour film format, even for a two part adaptation. Some important detail was removed from the film to keeping the time under control. That said, Villeneuve did a great job. Many, including this video creator are used to 2 hour meet'um, grab'um, smash'um, and celebrate format you see in most movies of this genre and are not very interesting.
I love David Lynch's Dune. Sure, it has it's issues, and some parts are very 'of it's time', but i honestly believe that it does some things from the book better than Villenueve's. And it looks fantastic. Plus, the Lynchian aspects are extremely Lynchian, which is always worth watching.
Watched Dune part 2 twice in the theater. Including Part 1, this is my favourite Sci-Fi movie of all time. I highly, highly anticipate watching the 4k.
I saw it IMAX and was blown away. It was visually stunning and sounded phenomenal even though it was a hard story to follow. It was better than the first minus your girl Florence Pugh😂. Cant wait to check it out at home. I should have mine in on Tuesday along with American Sniper. I’m glad they aren’t coming from FedEx because my Dracula 2000 Scream Factory came mangled to hell
I didn't appreciate Dune part 1 until I saw Dune part 2. To me, it falls into the Deathly Hollows situation. Part 1's on their own are slow and a chore to get through become you're only watching 1/2 of the story. The part 2's cone along and you have all the action and resolution that makes you fully appreciate the work/heavy lifting that the part 1's did
BRO!!! You're telling me that you're a movie buff and you chose not to see Dune part 2 in IMAX? That's like being an art critic and only viewing 70% of the Mona Lisa. A car enthusiast that drives an Aston Martin missing a wheel. What are you doing?!?!
Wouldn’t say I chose. I don’t really have the time to make it to the theater as often anymore, especially since they shut down the theater 5 minutes from home during the pandemic. And since I’m more of a home video review channel and not a new movies at the theater review channel, I prioritize that experience over the other.
Lack of IMAX is only part of the reason why I refuse to buy the current editions of this and PART ONE. They also deserve the LOTR / Criterion Collection level treatment for supplemental features and not the jokes we have. One day hopefully WB will care enough to do them over, perhaps after MESSIAH. Until then, no sale.
Oh man i feel that not being able to go out with kids. Ive got 2 and it really is hard to get out for fun but its worth it! Even a trip to the movies is hard to manage with kids.
Imax is stupid. Yes, 70mm is incredible. And a giant-ass screen is amazing. But pick an aspect ratio and stick with it already (unless there's a narrative reason for it, of course). Besides, Imax at home will be a smaller screen anyway, effectively. I just find the whole thing annoying.
If the home video version is cropped to IMAX 1:90:1 like other similar films have been (or 1:78 to fill the whole frame), you get nothing but benefit over the 2:39:1 version and no black bars on the sides. The frame contains so much more detail which is lost and there are plenty of side by side comparisons on TH-cam showing this.
@MrDoctorMabuse Really, how much detail will a 70mm image (which has an approximate resolution equivalent of 12K-18K) lose at 4K, no matter how the image is cropped? My real question though is, why would a filmmaker frame the image for IMAX, when most people, 80% or so, will see it non-IMAX, and after the theatrical run, _everyone_ will see it non-IMAX? Why wouldn't you frame the whole movie for that audience? Using the entire 70mm frame just because it contains the most information, throwing out considerations like consistency in composition and which version will be seen by the most people, doesn't make much sense to me. Again, i love having the biggest, best image possible, but not at the expense of having to worry about which version is the "correct" version, and whether the "correct" version will even be available. Just pick an aspect ratio and be done with it.
@@kdkseven The DUNE films were originated on 4K, first of all. So not relevant. Variable aspect ratios have been a practice in motion pictures long before IMAX was even invented. Kubrick used them among others. In the case of a film like DUNE all the compositions are full of rich details because of visual effects, amazing location work and art direction, so if the filmmakers see fit to deliver a picture with more height, I'm not about to treat that like it's an issue. I've seen Part One in the IMAX 1:90 format and it was impressive enough even with not 100% of it being that ratio to want to repeat the experience at home. With PART TWO being shot 100% in IMAX, it probably would make a better experience at home for me.
@MrDoctorMabuse Well i've been speaking more about IMAX in general, but point taken. Yeah, variable aspect ratios have been a thing for forever, that's why i mentioned "unless there's a narrative reason for it." Also, if the director just likes varying aspect ratios structurally, or they just think it looks cool, that's fine. But there is only one version of those films, and that's the way they're presented both in the cinema and at home. My problem with IMAX is that for certain scenes, or maybe the whole film, the director composes the shot for the IMAX ratio, but it's only ever going to be seen that way on an IMAX screen, and everywhere else, that sequence is going to be compromised. There are two versions of that movie, and one is the ideal version (according to the director and cinematographer ), but that's not the one that's going to be available. When the original Dune came out, i watched Secrets of Dune's 'Standard vs. IMAX Comparison' video, and the feeling you get from the two shots is substantially different. The IMAX usually feels more open and vast, the other more framed and focused. Same shot, different feeling. Which one is correct? And, inherently, the taller an image is in the theater, the smaller it's going to be on the screen at home. Anyway, i don't mean to be argumentative, i've just been thinking about this off and on for the past couple of years and it's fun to talk about. And after Dune Part 2, which i saw in both IMAX and regular, i'm not going to bother with IMAX anymore. Truth is, after a couple of minutes i forget about it anyway and don't notice the difference. Plus, those theaters are always too loud (at least in my area).
I got the steelbook from gruv and been watching it damn near every day. Shit looks incredible, coming from a guy who watched it four times in 70mm IMAX.
They are gonna milk this series the best way they know how. They only touched the surface.......watch the tv series from 2002 Dune and Children of Dune it goes deep and i find it much more entertaining. Awsome practical visuals interesting characters.....can't believe people not talking about that. I recall people raving on about it back then.
Being a Fan of all the Extras , i'm not digging this , i would've paid extra coin for a Bluray Disc full of all the features no Worries at all , I'll still buy a Copy though , i'll figure out a way to make my own extras Disc 😉👍
Kenny won’t watch an IMAX experience movie in the theater but he’ll complain it doesn’t have IMAX aspect ratio on physical media to no end… make that make sense 😔
Did you hear the part where I said it really didn’t bother me too much? Part of these reviews and criticisms are on the behalf of the people I’m reviewing it for.
Didn’t like your video and completely do not agree with your opinions. You should probably do something you have more passion for, this video is proof you have no eye for art or cinema.
The movie manages to make riding giant sandworms boring. Zendaya's acting is horrible as usual and her character is extremely unlikeable, even giggling with her friend when Paul's mother could possibly die after drinking the poison to become a reverend mother. Some people really think this is the best sequel since Empire? I would rather watch the Renegade version of Highlander 2 over this overrated mess! I'm just being honest
Crazy how anyone could define this movie as "meandering". The film is massive, but every scene is so meticulously crafted with purpose.
I saw Dune Part 2 in 70mm IMAX and it was probably one the greatest theater experiences I've ever had! I can't wait to watch this again at home!

Glad you enjoy it!
Fred Meyer and GameStop are going to start selling 4K discs
Yup. Got a video coming today!
Got my copy coming on Tuesday.
Big week coming up. I have the steel of this, Killer Klowns and Lair of the White Worm on the way, plus the 2 Fletch blus.
Nice! Hoping to get the Fletch films soon as well!
The slipcover is a beauty!
Thanks amen.
Movie is AWEsome....
I bet Ken is going to see Beetle nice and Juicy!!! in the Theater...
😆 🤣 😂
I don’t really want to, but family might force me out on that one.
I own three of the lenses this was shot on which I got for less than a hundred bucks 😂
Being a Fan of all the Extras , i'm not digging this , i would've paid extra coin for a Bluray Disc full of all the features no Worries at all , I'll still buy a Copy though , i'll figure out a way to make my own extras Disc 😉👍
Yeah, I don’t like it either. I’m not a digital code guy at all. Lol
Reference quality stuff man
These movies are masterpieces. Maybe Transformers is more your style, lol.
Yes absolutely. Saw them all 10 times a piece in the theater. Michael Bay is the greatest visionary filmmaker of our generation. 🙄
The Black and White is infrared.
I believe Ken has a Secret Crush on Florence Pugh ❤
🤮
Ken, what are doing with your life ? One quick question, do you really like movies ? You think so but I am not sure.
I honestly ask myself that everyday. 😔
5x! In Theaters!
Incendies and Enemy are weird and great.
Enemy is probably my favorite of his.
You really need to go and listen to how his surname is pronounced.
Nah
I absolutely love movies and collect, home theater, 4k, all the stuff. I don't like Dune
Understandable. We can’t like everything.
Does this guy even like to watch movies? Or is this channel only for slipcover collectors?
He said he liked it. Is that not enough, or does he have to build a shrine to it?
He literally lists all of the other movies he’s seen from this director and how much he loved them….
He didn't see it in theaters and only has the physical disc because the studio gave it to him for free. That means he absolutely hates the movie.
If you don’t like slips, then get the hell out. 😂
David Lynch's dune 👍
GASP 😂
Didn’t like your video and completely do not agree with your opinions. You should probably do something you have more passion for, this video is proof you have no eye for art or cinema.
How bout my 1700 other videos? Any proof of passion or my cinematic eye in there? Lol
How does one quantify "passion"? I never understand that mindset, people enjoy what they enjoy.
Honesty is a matter of perspective.
Honestly I was hoping Paul would cut her head off after walking out on him at the end. Total disrespect. Would have really made the ending for me. 😂
@@midlevelmedia based on book?
I missed out on the Steelbook, but I am still really looking forward to Dune 2.
Was John Cena in Dune 2❓ If not then not everyone was in there. 🤪🤪
You didn't see em??
He was in several scenes all throughout the film. You not see him?
@@midlevelmedia John Cena ❓ I'm like whistling his entry music 🎶 going into the ring. 😂🤣
Arrival is overrated
