    I would strongly recommend installing a motor emergency stop, which works when the skipper is further than approx 35ft from the receiving unit, e.g. MOB

    I love autopilot!! We run long distances sometimes up to 65-80 or so miles one way. (weather permitting) Running like 20-25 knots, I can rig baits if it is a good weather day. We usually don't encounter another boat for about 25-40 mile stretch. Obviously, someone is always looking out and monitoring the helm. We only have a 24 WA with twin 150's. Trolling is also easier! Heading hold works well at those speeds. Besides the re-power 2 years ago, autopilot is the best investment we have made on our boat "Flanker". Autopilot is worth every penny.

    The new boat (2nd hand) which i purchased about 2 years ago had the auto pilot installed. I would never have thought to install one but now i wouldn't go with out. We do a lot of over night trips fishing on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and its the best thing....especially at night.

    I have added a full garmin electronic package on a 32’ mainship including auto pilot and it is awesome. You can select a spot on the chart and route to. The autopilot will follow the route. Of course you must always review the selected course and make any adjustments but this is a very simple process. I find myself using the heading hold while on short trips, and the auto routing for destinations that I have never been to previously. Having the same brand electronics throughout my vessel has made operation and software updates extremely easy.

    I have an autopilot on my whaler. I have a Simrad Ap44 autopilot controller hooked up to my Nac2 autopilot computer and my Nac2 VFR core pack. It is connected via Nmea 2k to my twin Simrad NSS9 evo3 chart plotters and my mercury vessel view 702. I absolutely love it. Anyone looking to upgrade their autopilot, I highly recommend this unit.

    I have the Garmin reactor, with the GHC 20 controller. Easy install if you're mechanically inclined, but you need to buy or make the extra hydraulic lines from the T at the pump. This is a good system, but the controller has to be custom fine-tuned with the programmable "rudder gains" to your specific vessel. Compass placement must be installed above the waterline and centered as possible. I've installed 3 so far on different vessels, and each of them needed to be fine-tuned to work correctly. I fish solo most of the time, so having an autopilot is like having another person at the helm. You just have to pay extra attention when fighting a fish and don't get complacent about boat traffic.

    I use the simrad auto pilot AP 44 VRF with nss evo 3S screens and the remote control module with optimus steering . Its worth noting that auto pilot doesn't work that well when moving greater than 55mph even with the sensitivity turned down. it struggles to maintain course and it starts to slalom slightly and it gets progressively worse. At slower speeds its works great.

      I have a 17ft Tracker I troll with on Lake Michigan. I was looking to get a Raymarine unit to go with my Element 9. Did you install or have someone install it? Will the 100 series work or do I need the 150? Thanks

    • @richardthomas3415
      @richardthomas3415 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brockus35 I installed the unit, 3 pieces in total (pump, compass & controller). It is a straightforward install and manageable by anyone who installs electronics and completes minor engine work. Tricky part is the hydraulics. You need a pair of hoses to run from the steering pump to the auto pump location, (2) 3 way taps on the back of the helm steering pump, one tap side into the helm pump, one tap side into a hydraulic hose to the pump and one tap side into your main steering hydraulic line to the motor. Port and starboard are mirror installs. My application is on a 200hp outboard. The pump is powerful, you cannot stop the motor from turning onto a selected heading no matter the amount of muscle you place against a turn in progress. Study your requirements to connect to the helm pump correctly and the hoses required about another $200 to $300 worth of parts. Make sure to use thread locker and cleaner approved for hydraulic and pressure (NO Teflon tape). Bleeding the system following the install is a TRIP! If you fish alone and troll with downriggers and never stop the boat it is a mandatory item. My autopilot networks with a Raymarine MFD and steers the boat to any waypoint selected.

    Have my first autopilot on my current boat, 6.5 metre cabin boat. We regularly fish 120-130kms off shore and I wouldn't be without autopilot now, it's nice to look back at a straight track over that distance. We have a simrad nss evo 3 with a nac1 computer. It's idiot proof, even I can use it.

    Great vid. Boat AUTOPILOT Worth It? Absolutely if you are sailing single handed or effectively single handed (ie with an inexperienced crew) -- it is the only way. But, the AP only steers the boat, either statically or dynamically with other nav equipment, it does not look out for hazards. So you have to keep effective watch keeping, when running on AP and performing the tasks that take you away from you boats helm. In deep water you can combine technologies to help you determine if you are likely to have trouble -- setting alarms on ais/radars for example -- but still you have to have effective watch keeping.

    Will it steer away from channel markers

    Will it steer around shallow water
    Will it sense incoming boats that do not see you and turn to prevent a collision

I have called lowrance and Seastar and no one will tell me if both systems will talk to each other! I am looking into a Simrad NEC2 or NEC3 computer. Will this computer talk to the lowrance MFD? I guess the pump is irrelevant as its just hidraulicp pressure. If you have some advise, would be great
