A friend, a friend like Adrian is a blessing, always, everywhere. Used to make those type of hoses. Had to test them, all took better than 10,000 psi. This was on a water filled tester. That was a test to destruction.
When I done my apprenticeship MANY years ago we had to make hoses and test to destruction to pass the hydraulics section of fitting and machining. I couldn't get mine to pop cos the machine topped out at 9500psi. The ones that did blow done so spectacularly. You are getting there Stu. ps. You are heading in the right direction, its getting cooler down south. G'day from Hobart!
So right from the start of the video, i see Adrians t-shirt, and for the rest of the day, stuck in my head... gonna be a rock and roll singer, gonna be a rock and roll star! Because i hear it pays well. Lol 😆 another great stu production video. 👍🏼😎

Brilliant episode. Just to balance the effusive (albeit deserved) glowing comments about Adrian, I'd say Adrian is also fortunate to have found a high quality friend. Fair winds to you.
EVERYONE needs a friend like Adrian. I have NEVER found one in all my years. I need the occasional mechanic but have never found one I could trust to throw a dead cat let alone repair something. Most I've met couldn't change a spark plug without messing up something like the A/C and the Alternator...Adrian is both knowledgeable and communicative but friendly and wants to help. Kudos Adrian.
I have a mate a bit like Adrian, but he says “I’ll tell you how to do it, but you have to do the job yourself or you’ll never learn anything !” He’ll only get involved if nobody can figure what is going on, likes “Puzzles”.

We all need a bud like Adrian I've had one for years he's been a great help through my life. Now the roles have changed, he's starting a business and we're helping him get to know the ropes so to speak, until he off running on his own. Its a learning curve like everything else in life. It was funny as you caught Adrian deep in thought, I think, you kind've caught him off guard. LOL I guess if you don't have a check value in your system you can always use a rope temporarily to tie off the wheel at the helm, until you get a check valve installed. Adrian is full of great ideas isn't he. He's a man that thinks out of the box which is the only way to go.. Does your wife know every time you drop over to Adrian's place your really going over there for a love affair. lol

Great job! When you have time, you should attach two clear plastic hoses to the ram bleeders, attach a T-fitting to these hoses and run a hose to your reservoir at the helm - open the bleeders, then cycle the steering wheel port to starboard - this will purge any air from the system.
I watched this video two times. The first time I was a bit confused about some of the setup but after watching a second time... this is a remarkably simple system(and install) to have a fully functioning auto steer system. This is fantastic. I can’t wait to see how you like it over the long term. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from the USA 🙏🏼
Adrien is the man. I can still just eyeball fittings and fastener sizes in SAE like him. Always had good luck with Raymarine. Pretty straightforward install. Cheers to the girls for the parts run. Thanks for posting.
“Hmm that’s a good question hmm....” lol that made me laugh. What an awesome episode with Adrian, the god of the engines. Enjoyed every second. Great work you guys!
I know this may be a bit late.. but when bleeding the system attach a line to each of the bleeder valves, then use a plastic bottle to catch the excess oil. Just a little tip my dad taught me in the marine mechanic business. Cheers & thanks for the content!
Adrian is an absolute legend, hydraulic knowledge is a superb skill Great job Stu, I am about to install a complete hydrive system and Auto Pilot System in our Cat and found this very valuable. Thanks buddy. Ross
Similar to how my projects go. Get all your fittings ahead of time, and then make a second run for the one oddball. I like those reusable fittings. Keep a bit of hose on board and you can make a replacement hose any time you need. 👍👍
I put a Wood Freeman old school auto pilot on my second shrimp boat. It had a magnetic compass with cat whisker contacts and a manual clutch. Very crude compared to your hydraulic version, but it was one of the best things I ever put on any of my boats. Thinking of getting one for my 22' outboard now that I have seen your install! Adrian is the kind of person we all need as friends!
That's great the Detroit Master comes to the rescue. Y'all did a fine job on the hydraulics, now you can move about while under way,I hope you pull a safety rope behind you. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida

Very helpful. I have a small truckable tugboat that I am thinking about adding autopilot and now I have a good understanding of what I am in for when adding it. Thank you.
Its great that you know and understand what has been installed on your noat. Being there, taking it apart and installing is so important. It must give you a lot of confidence in your boat. Excellent!
Just a tip Stu, if you cut a hydraulic with a grinder or any mechanical cutter always pig out the line or blow out with compressed air. the last thing you want is a bit of swarf blocking an internal porting on the system.
Good thing Adrian is there to help you he's an ace. Those raymarine autopilots are awesome I had it in my boat it really works especially during a rough seas
Thanks. Really interesting. You owe Adrian a lifetime of beer. Suggestion. Get a big reflector in the wheelhouse so there's more light on you when you shoot with the windows behind you. White card, or expanded polystyrene will do the trick.
Denzo tape the fisherman's friend! It kept my hydraulic fitting on trawl winches and haulers in good order even though they were covered in salt water most days. Good to see you with the reusable fittings they saved our ass on many occasions worth carrying a few spares incase you have to join a blown hose although that is un likely on a steering system.
Stu !!! I have been watching your videos for quite some time. Especially your videos when you rebuilt your Diesel with Adrian. I also mentioned that I'm currently in Diesel tech school and learned so much from you and Adrian. Well here I am waiting to take my next class which is Hydraulics... I have been reading to get a jump start on the class when I came across your video, and the hoses and fittings Adrian told you to get are in my book...Adrian mentioned using double wire braided hoses for high pressure as opposed to single, and Fabric braided hose which the book say's are for low pressure....and I come to find out that they also make spiral wire braided hoses ....Also learned about the fittings Adrian mentioned and the reason's for using 90's when needed as opposed to straight fittings..... Thanks Mate, now I really want to jump into this class. ALL the Best to you and Adriane.........Tell Adriane I said thanks !!!
That was really cool. Adrian is quite the knowledge base. I've never dealt with hydraulics either, though the "mushy brakes" comparison was helpful. Thanks! 👍
I remember making some oil cooler lines for aircraft. There is a special mandrel that goes into the tapered fitting that is rounded on the end. It prevents the inner fitting from cutting the flap inside the rubber tube as Adrian mentioned.
Hi guys I just love the way you work together and always concerned about the safety gear when you are cutting things with angle grinders got your safety their feet and non-safety glasses LOL, The Australian way, Adrian is such a character and that’s really interesting how he describes things and how he likes to put things together in the right manner I just love it thank you guys for the great video can’t wait to see more you guys working together I love the banter Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia
Stu just a heads up about hydraulic hoses. When you cut them with a grinder or abrasive wheel. You should thoroughly clean the inside before installing it. The metal from the wire braids can cause premature pump failure due to the metal getting in the oil and passing through the pumps and motors. Some brake clean to flush it out before installing is good insurance that you don’t have issues down the road. Thanks for the content.
You didn't really need any of those Schematic Drawing as you just have to let Adrian loose with those 'Magic Wands' he has of Spanners, plus hoses cutting tools and various fittings and you were just sorted...Great Upload...
A trick I've learned when bleeding hydraulic steerings: Open both bleed valves, put a hose between them and turn the helm one direction for a while. All the air will travel to the reservoir and gets replaced with oil. The system becomes practically self bleeding while the hose is in place. Works a treat. If you don't have a reservoir, adding a bottle to the filling hose and attaching it to the fill hole on the helm pump will work as a temporary oil reservoir. May give you a little oil mess to clean up, so have some shop rags handy.
Put a clear hose between both airwents. Put a funnel with a tube attached and screw it into the fillercap at the helm. Turn the steering untill all the bubbles have traveled up to the top of the tank in the wheelhouse. Tighten airvents, refill at helmstation if needed, unscrew the hose and funnel and put the cap back on. You should be able to turn continuously in one direction and then the other. One person listens to bubbles while turning the wheel, while the other monitors the clear hose between the airvents for bubbles. 😊
Each steering system is obviously different however having done the process a number of times I found that you could use the pump filler to purge the system without having to crack the piston bleed ports at all, in other words if you kept the funnel full and continued to turn port and starboard the air would work its way to the funnel without an issue, it is the highest point of the circuit after all. I also found that leaving it open overnight is essential because there is always the odd bubble or two that come out.
People say shit like “living the dream” well THIS is what it really looks like , back to wearing mud for a job wish I was you and greetings from Adelaide

A Great video, I never realized hydraulics were as simple as what it looked like in this video.
I bet those hydraulic fittings weren't cheap! I think alot of people underestimate the cost of hydraulic systems and the components.
They do add up a bit but if these ones also last 30 years they'll be worth every cent.
Whats the name of that fittings ? Think Iam not able to get them in Croatia, only crimping ones.
AC/DC and Kenworth! Wow, my opinion of your taste in friends is going up.
Safe travels and thanks for taking us along.
