I got the Quake remaster thru Steam with the copy of Quake I'd owned for a while already. Not bad, but I still prefer running Quake thru DarkPlaces for Linux.
I love how you can pretty much tell how the review is gonna go just by looking at the timestamps around "Things I don't like" Also, I appreciate the mention of how it wasn't the first fully 3D fps... that fact gets swept under the carpet by a lot of people who should know better, and it does a disservice to a couple of my other favourite games :)
The fact Bethesda and Nightdive didn't replace the OG Quake and actually let me both up the original AND still have the new remastered makes me very happy
True. Bethesda definitely seems to have learned from the mistakes they made with the latest Doom ports, 'cause they seem to have resisted the temptation to make most of the same bizarre decisions I heard they were making there -- and they were a lot clearer in communicating what this was intended to be.
Having played the original from Steam, the only thing I really wanted was the soundtrack that strangely doesn't play natively on said Steam version and I had to go elsewhere to make the game actually play said music. The Nightdive version still plays more or less the same but with no music issue, so that's nice of them.
For me its the most perfect game ever made. The atmosphere is umatched til this day. Playing through this beautiful remaster was a blast and i also love the new episode. Couldnt have been better. Multiplayer is also finally great now again
I used to absolutely hate fps games. Im 17 so i only saw fps games as boring military games that are just slow monotonous multiplayer games, but then I found civvie and your channel, (specifically the what is a boomer shooter video) and was convinced to give doom 1 a shot. Best decision of my gaming life right there. I ended up during the summer steam sale buying a ton pf retro fps games. Dusk, Amid Evil, Ultrakill, Hrot, Nightmare Reaper, Ion fury, Wrath and Prodeus. I also got all the best old fps games. Apogee throwback pack, Return to castle wolfenstien, heretic , Hexen 1 and 2, Turok 1 and 2, and quake 1-3. I just want to thank creators like you for introducing these games to a new generation and for all these games for me to play. edit: somehow forgot to mention i had doom 2016 and eternal along with the holy trinity PS: if you have any more suggestions please tell me lol.
Nothing can beat the atmosphere of fps games of the 90s. Doom 2016 and Eternal are also good.i can play some of the modern fps games i just stay offline with them.
I'm 34 years old. I was 9 years old when Quake came out but I didn't have access to a PC that could play it back then. This remaster is the first time I have ever played the original Quake in any form, and I am HOOKED!
The game is about as old as me, but I first played it in 2000s. I remember around 2005, with my outdated Pentium II 233 MHz, Quake was acquired for free as shareware, it is playable until the first episode ending: Chthon. The shareware game was widely known during the time where most people who owned PC were mostly dominated with Windows 98 as OS, but full version of it was not popular in my country.
I was 10 years old and played the crap out of Quake on PC. Never multiplayer though… can’t remember why. It was because I didn’t know how to set it up or did not have the internet capability. 🤷♂️
@@SynthLizard8 there’s job listings for a new action fps for a long running popular series at Id, so people are speculating Doom or Quake. I think it’s gonna be Quake with the leaked Ranger Slayer skin being a preorder bonus.
I'm a lifelong id Software fan and I'm here to confirm that the Quake remaster is excellent. I've totally hooked on the Switch version. The only thing this review left out (that I can think of) is the inclusion of bots for multi-player practice; as someone who is new to Quake deathmatching I really appreciate having the ability to warm up without getting embarrassed by other players.
I'm 4 years younger than this game and I've been playing the Switch version a lot lately. It's so much fun than I thought it'd be, it's unbelievable how well this game has aged.
Jebus. I was a kid when this game came out, we didn’t get a voodoo graphics card to play these games until Quake 3 came out. That was the game that made my dad have to buy a GPU to even play. Quake 2 we could play in software mode but it looked so much better with a voodoo gfx
Quake 1 is a perfect franchise for a reboot because something about its aesthetic reminds me of From software. Imagine a Quake game with Dark Souls looking locations… but it’s a pure shooter. An aging gamer can dream!
I bought the game on Steam sometime back, and was very pleasantly surprised at being given the remaster for free. Other publishers would have simply charged you for it. Multiplayer was a blast. Chaotic and can get laggy, but that's always been the case or Quake online. Quake was the first game I had put serious time playing deathmatch, and playing the remaster, it felt like reliving my childhood again (yes, I played this game as a kid lol). The game does have some technical issues, but they seem easily fixable, so I'm overall very happy with the remaster. Sadly, on the Steam forums at least, there's a lot of hate towards the remaster. Some hardcore purists are claiming movement isn't exactly the same as the original, and the changes to Nightmare means they can't simply rocket jump around for speed runs anymore. Some people are also calling the remaster 'not Quake' because the base game is wrapped around Nightdive's KEX Engine despite the game being demo perfect. Then there's some people stoking up groundless fears that an official remaster means Bethesda is going to clamp down on source ports and make the game closed source. They're extremely vocal in shutting down any reasonable discourse in the Steam forums and aren't backing down until the remaster is removed outright.
It´s the reception actually extremely negative on the forums?? Nickpicky cunts in those places have given the doom and quake communities a bad rep. of elitism and neckbeard behavior for years. I hope this backlash doesn´t endure for a long time
As someone who was nearly 30 when Quake came out, I have to say they nailed it. They added just enough modern touches without ruining what made it special. It sounds funny to say, but it's worth playing just to enjoy the soundtrack. The mazelike design and secrets are lots of fun, too.
Simply adding the OST makes this worth it, but overall you can tell this was made with love, not profit, in mind. Hopefully this is a sign that a reboot in the vein of Doom 2016 is in the works
19:39 the gimmick is that the whole level is upside down

When I realised it yesterday (competed the whole expansion on Nightmare), it blew my mind. Very cool stuff! Loved how all new levels had some sort of an environmental story telling.
They nailed it with this remaster! I love the fact that I can multiplay The Bad Place (DM4) [the best map ever in my opinion] again! I played it to death in de early days. I'm loving playing it again. The single player also looks and plays fantastic. 10 out of 10 for me. And you did a great job with your review vid!
I played Quake I using only a keyboard in 1997. This remake is a beautiful example of how good the Quake engine really was. Now to update Quake II, which was my favorite all time FPS.
I was ten years old when the original Quake came out and was blown away by the 3d in the game. Yes the PC version of this you still have the option to play the original vanilla game and save files. This remaster was a great surprise. I have the Doom,Doom2,Doom 64, Turok 1 &2 Duke Nukem 3d remasters on Switch and PC. Oh i pre-ordered Quake physical disc for PS4 on Limited Run Games website. Great in depth video on an iconic game.
I remember i got quake on winter sale than played it a little and left (during that time i played doom eternal like crazy) and i wanted to play it again when i saw it in my steam library and quakeqon came around and this came out so i was very happy for this, and i got the best price for 10 euro game.
literally sounds like my experience lol. I got it in the complete edition in the winter, played a little bit. but was hooked on Eternal. Saw that the remaster was out and was delightfully surprised when it was a free update since I already had the game!
I got it last winter, played through the first few levels but I got annoyed after a series of failed attempts to integrate the Nine Inch Nails soundtrack into the game. I was super excited to discover that the game has been updated and remastered with the soundtrack intact. Been playing it every day
The original blew us away in 1996 being 15yo teenagers. It was such an extreme leap forward for us coming from Doom 2.The remaster nails it, the new light mapping is adding to Quakes mood. Some bugs are still to be squashed in the Steam release tho. Get it now!
Quake was a childhood favorite of mine! Thank you Nightdive Studios, Machine Games, and Bethesda for doing another updated version of a classic! I'm currently rocking 19 Steam achievements in Quake Remaster in 'Secret Sleuth', 'Friendly Fire', 'Vertical Vengeance', 'A Close Shave', 'Slipgate Pacifist', 'The Shambler Dance', 'The Well of Wishes', 'Nevermore', 'Discharge', 'The Painless Maze', 'You're not supossed to be here!', 'Sink the Horror Electric', 'Bottom of the Well', 'Beneath the Blue Chambers', 'Into Sandy's City', 'The Last Unexplored Path', 'Indigestion', and 'Shub's Bud'! I look forward the playing each of the expansions for the first time since back when I had the old CD-ROM copy of the original it was only the source port! Epic video!
I also put motion blur off. Ambient occlusion is cool though. Makes you feel like a sophisticated gamer. £13 for Quake bundle on steam. They said N.I.N does the soundtrack😮.
I never played Quake. I recently bought and played through the entirety of DUSK and thought it was awesome, so the look of this remastered edition speaks right to me and made me interested in checking out one of the most influencial games for the modern FPS.
It'd be awesome to also get some proper worldbuilding on the monsters, locations, and possibly even Ranger himself (though he kinda gets one in QC, along with the Death Knight). I could imagine a modern Quake game being pretty excellent, cranking up the raw power and speed to 11 with a fucking DEMOLISHING industrial soundtrack backing the action. Hopefully the remaster can generate enough interest that Quake can get the sequel it deserves, horrifying Lovecraftian evil and all
Wow have to play it again (last time i played it is just 2 years ago). the sound, models, lighting and new maps are awesome! I hope the bugs mentioned in the video are fixed by now.
I played this when originally released. Few of my friends had PCs capable of running it but I got numerous people hooked, that turned into regular sleepover LAN parties at friends houses, even staying behind school because they had a huge network of PCs that very few school had in such numbers. Many a school hour when we should have been doing work was spent playing Quake. I spent hours playing massive amounts of expanded user created content, quake really blew the modding scene wide open. I even made modded some mods to create my own cocktail of mods. Quake was a game in its own right, but so much more. And this remaster is excellent. I hope other mods reach this new version, but my hats off to the devs who have very carefully and respectful bought one of the best video games ever created to a new audience. My hat goes off to them.
Coincidentally I beat Quake for the first time 1 month ago. I enjoyed it, but due to the lack of soundtrack and it's age I didn't have the stamina to tackle the expansions. Currently I'm slowly beating Quake II. Suddenly this was released, and now I'm playing the expansions with the improvements and music and it's a very fun experience. Though I still can't figure out how to keybind guns to different keys so I find myself using the wheel. Awesome video as always, and awesome game.
Open the console with the key below Esc, then type: bind g impulse 6 (this will bind the grenadelauncher to g) and bind r impulse 7 (rocket launcher on r) and bind e impulse 8 (lightninggun on e) and bind q impulse 5 (super nailgun on Q)... also you can change the mouse sensitivity by using the cl_sensitivity command (this allows to set sensitivities with a higher floating point precision than the slider in the options menu e.g. 1.53 instead of 1.5)
I really can't say anything about this review other than the word "FANTASTIC"! You nailed everything and I loved every single word of it. The sentence "It's important to acknowledge the contributions of the source ports, they set the standard for how Quake should be remastered." was really really good and well thought out. We are thankful for an official Quake game but we must not forget the importance and efforts of source port developers. You said it perfectly.
Played quake when it first came out, me and a couple of mates linked up a few pcs and played it on multiplayer against each other. It was just mind blowing playing against your mates all it the same room. Up most nights til 3-4 in the mornings. Happy times.
Playing this at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it. A great game that is constantly engaging. This was my first video game on my first PC and it still has the magic and tension I first felt. Maybe I have an old school bias but anything I played post HL2 or Farcry felt like a movie where they let me play some set pieces occasionally. If you have never played Quake you are in for an immersive treat and the value for money is ridiculously good. I can usually play just one level a session, not because I get bored but because I need a breather.
I love the sound effects of this game - So chilling, intimidating and dark. I remember first playing this on demo on PC back in 96 when I was just 9 years old and being terrified of the AI and the overall moody, gritty nature of the game. I'll definitely purchase it for the Switch.
Man this remaster came out of nowhere for me. I was at a friend's place just chilling when on my phone I saw an article mentioning there was a new remaster of Quake, AND it was released that same day! Needless to say I was Super Excited! And man oh man did Nightdive Studios deliver another excellent remaster. They already did knocked it out of the park for me with the 2 Turok games which was an awesome surprise since I used to play them back in the days on the N64. Now just gotta wait for Turok 3 hopefully. Plus now that we have a remaster of Quake 1, I wanna see what they can do with Quake 2. Maybe include the PS1 and N64 versions as Add-Ons like they did with Quake 64 as a Free download for Quake 1. Oh I can't Wait!
I am loving this remaster immensely, playing in Parallels on an M1 iMac. I still remember the first time I saw the Shambler on the original, it scared the shit out of me. Still does. Dimension of the machine is absolutely incredible and highly recommended.
I bought this game as soon as I could when I saw the trailer uploaded on Nintendo's channel. Yeah I got the switch version, and while it has some minor framedips... It stays on 60fps the vast majority of the time. I am quite enjoying it so far, certainly a superb job by Nightdive studios. Hope they eventually do Quake 2. I've never played this series, but I am loving the first one a lot, one of the few FPS of the 90s that is truly timeless.
The few? Heretic, wolfenstien, doom, heretic hexen, duke nukem 3d, goldeneye, forsaken, perfect dark, turok 1 and 2 plus wage wars and medal of honor. I am pretty sure i am missing more.
@@GaMeBoYDaN1 Turok 2 didn't aged well. Most of the levels are very confusing to navigate for me. Duke Nukem's character and humour is seriously cringy and outdated. By timeless, I mean that you can play them without the mindset of "this is an old game" and find it amazing.
I’m old and grew up with the game. For me it is ONE thing that counts: when i wanna play a videogame, i want it convenient! Starting the ps and play. Wasnt possible till today with this game. So - i have it back and i love it. Micdrop!
Nostalgia is a funny thing. The remaster does a better job of letting me relive my first moments with quake in the 90’s than the actual 90’s version does. If something is a fond memory, we tend to remember it better than it was and this really hits that mark.
for the 50th anniversary combine all the classic shooters together with all assets and levels in 1 file. you can launch any game with any character, weapon set, and physics
Well I never played Quake back in the day because I thought it was a step down from Doom, but I just finished it on Nightmare using a controller and I have to say that it still holds up pretty well and it's amazingly playable.
I played this on my old compaq. Got the remaster and it looks amazing. I still have nostalgia for a game that changed history. My friend installed the game on my pc but without music because he took away the cd. So I played it without the music, I played quake 2 which was amazing too.
Many in the quake community have mentioned that movement feels off, especially walking back is slower and there are some console command fixes for that. Hopefully that gets a patch soon as well as the other issues people have had.
It's a shame that the remaster soundtrack is not right. Compare the CD or youtube copy of the soundtrack and you'll quickly hear that they've somehow stripped all the treble from the remaster soundtrack. It sounds muffled and awful.
I definitely get the sense that MachineGames took influence from Arcane Dimensions with the way they built the new episode. ...I loved it so much, I'm working on a little mod for it now... we'll see how that goes :)
I was born in 1992 and played this on release when I was 5. The Ogre’s grenades and Fiend’s growls are some of the most formative sounds in my brain lol. Also the original ogre model is better.
Thank you for this video, there is a surprising lack of reviews of this remastered This game was a big part of my childhood, but I never was able to play the proper original version of it I had Quake 64 instead. Which was a great Port, but now it's awesome to really see what the game actually was. Never mind all of the improvements
You could've gotten any PC release (even a DOS release of the game) and then installed a popular Source Port of the game engine to play it on a modern PC.
I was introduced as a little kid to Quake II on the N64. Man the memories. But when this game was announced I was like "yeah I've never seen Quake I. I'm down" Now up to the final stage on normal in my first ever blind playthrough with the Witch mother or something and I'm having loads of fun with this on my Xbox Series X. Despite how hard it is it just has a way of making you want to keep going. I've never played a challenging game that's so addictive. What great value for 15 dollars.
I have the PS4 version and man does it run smoothly as hell. NightDive is the king of remasters and Id software is the undisputed king of FPS games. It’s definitely a 5/5.
You know instead of the weapon wheel, I love how the dpad quick weapon select works. Cycling different categories of weapon (shotguns, machineguns, explosives, special) really allows to quickly switch weapons on the fly. Takes a little bit of getting used to but it feels good switching back and forth for the situation at hand, this way.

I was 6 when this incredible stuff came out. I remember around 2002 I was playing it on a Voodoo 2, and a crappy CRT monitor I barely saw anything. It was creepy. Its so atmospheric, well designed fun game with a huge modding community.
This port is a perfect middle ground with very few drawbacks. It certainly is the most multiplayer friendly port there is! Crossplay (incl. PSN) and Split Screen for gods sake, that's a huge plus in my book! Nightdive realy outdid themselves with this one!
Even though I cut my FPS teeth with games such as Doom II and Rise of the Triad, this game is so nostalgic of my PC gaming of the late 90's. at 16, I had Quake for Christmas 1996, along with Duke 3D and Tomb Raider. I must admit it was not until 6 months later when I upgraded my graphic card that I played and was hooked. I was even more addicted to making levels for it. This game was the true pioneering FPS game that all others have followed and other games are graphically superior, they never had the same addictiveness. Every few years, I find myself playing Quake and have to resist the urge to do level editing (too time consuming now and I have family responsibilities). I will always have a fondness for this game.
I got the free Steam upgrade. That was a heck of a nice surprise. Quake was my first online Gaming experience back in '96 and so the first thing I had to do was jump back into online play. Reunited and it feels so good 👍
Happy to note, that I've been playing through the original game, and first two expansions so far, and I don't think I've run into any of the bugs you've listed so far. And for the couple of months I've had it on my PC's it's been getting nearly weekly updates. Last one I saw was some tweaks for online play and maps.
I hope, if they make a sequel/reboot they finally combine the Quake 1 and Quake 2 universe/storylines. It actually wouldn't be all that would impossible: with the world hopping and all. I'd love to see Lovecratian elements and then the Strogg are thrown in to the mix. 🤞
if/when arcane Dimensions comes to this engine, then yes, this is TRULY worth getting, cause Arcane Dimensions are a damned must have! BEAUTIFUL map pack does not even begin to describe Arcane Dimensions. I have only just started on the new Addon with the many new maps that are stunning. But yeah, give us AD, and this is a complete package!
Remember me and my buddy speculating on quake before it was released, it was going to be "So realistic" that when you exploded a grenade, the grass would burn and die off, then the sun would come up and it would grow back. This was even before internet, geeking out on what could be on BBS chat. Up to that point we had Doom 2, and Duke3d, and the claims and hype around Quake and its new engine was real, so much so that even before internet we knew about it somehow, still boggles my mind how information travelled back then but it did. And when it released, sure enough , it was real 3d like we never seen before, very imrpessive but nothing like shooting someone with a shrink gun and stepping on them wow type thing, ala Duke3d. With Quake 2 i enjoyed a lot more, maybe beause i had a system that could run it and really didnt when Quake was released, but it didnt motivate me to get one either... Quake 3 however was another story, that was a really polished arena shooter that really made you wish you had a video card. Thats when i think video cards got really popular, thanks to that game.
Man you were pretty intense in this review. Not in your narrating tone, but definitely in writing (You even used some creative naughty words there). You still did good but that first half of the video wasn't your characteristic joyful self. That new episode does look like a breath of fresh air though, makes me want to play it. Most of the games you review make me want to try them at least. Thanks for the entertaining video.
This was a fantastic expose' on one of the most beloved PC games of all time! I've played the original Quake on and off since running it on my Pentium 1 PC with a 3DFX Voodoo2 card.. This is one of my top played games of all time along with the original Doom games and the two Half-Life titties. You're an excellent wordsmith in the way you talk about this game and I honestly can't imagine a better script than this.
I bought quake a few weeks before the remaster on steam, but then refunded it because I had no money. I then bought it a week later because of the remaster for double the price, no regrets.
Ahh Quake the memories. My parents didn't let me start playing games with a lot of gore at home until summer of 97, a few weeks after I turned thirteen so this was among my earliest FPS games I played at home. In retrospect I find it odd that they were fine with me playing 4X games where I literally had to order my subordinates to commit genocide to win but if a little blood or digitized body parts were left on screen it was too much. Hell dad and I ran through various run and gun games together long before then where if we got remotely close to winning we were getting kill counts that could meet or beat the kill totals needed to win in games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake In most shooters of that era my first two thoughts when I start playing were "Where's a full-auto weapon?" and "Where's a Shotgun?" Now it isn't uncommon to start with a full-auto weapon and even back then it happened sometimes like in Duke Nukem 3D (Which I only played when no one else was home for obvious reasons) but its still very rare AFAIK to start a shooter with the Shotgun or Shotgun equivalent.
thanks god i stumbled over this Vid.......loved Quake way back then and now i can love it again, got me it right away on steam..... they actually have the good ole timedemo ( for fps check ) in it too, so cool.....so far loving it all over again !
Disappointed that didn't use ray tracing. I saw someone transfer Quake 1 assets to Quake 2 RTX engine and the graphics was amazing. I think Quake 2 RTX engine is the best implementation of Ray tracing in a game so far.
I've never been that big Quake fan, but I certainly appreciate the game itself and did play it a bit in the days. But didn't even complete all original maps. One thing I noticed on this new remaster that bugged me a bit on console. At least on Xbox I had to change controls, especially speeds quite a bit to get more of that "pc" feel of the day. Controls by default felt quite.... I don't know, sluggish? Fairly easy fix, but was bit disappointed to see it. One fun fact about this. One of the port developer is here on TH-cam with awesome content. That's MVG Modern Vintage Gamer. Check it out, you'll likely like the content.
Playing the game pass version. Mouse support was broken on Xbox, but no major issues on PC. Finished main campaign and almost done with two expansions now. Great game.
Update on my Quake Remastered progression! I got all achievements in Quake on Steam making it my number 11 game on Steam to set foot on my Perfect Games list and my 2nd most recent game to make that list of mine also with my 12th and number 1 latest game on my Steam library to hit that list is the fellow 2021 released Bethesda project in Deathloop which that is my fourth modern AAA title to have became part of my Perfect Games list where my first three modern AAA titles to enter said list of mine on Steam were Cyberpunk 2077, Outriders, and Scarlet Nexus!
When I heard about the remaster I was mainly playing on my switch so I thought I would pick up the quake remaster which I played through and really enjoyed only a bit later on down the line I realise that they freely updated one and two on steam reselling it. Such a big plus
I actually used the weapon wheel quite extensively when I played the remaster. It's such a great thing to have for those weapons that are further in the numbers section of the keyboard and I don't have to stretch to quick select.

True. I was 12 in '96 and way too immature and impatient to stick with a tough game like Quake.

Can run quake live on a toaster mate only issue is no single player mode

I hope that if Quake gets a full on 2016 doom-style reboot, it'll keep the Eldrich psychological horror elements.
And pay Reznor whatever he wants to come back and make a new soundtrack.
I don't
You got your wish lmao
@@mehoyminoy3377 What do you mean?
@@SynthLizard8 there’s job listings for a new action fps for a long running popular series at Id, so people are speculating Doom or Quake. I think it’s gonna be Quake with the leaked Ranger Slayer skin being a preorder bonus.
I sure hope Return to Castle Wolfenstein gets the same treatment for its 20th anniversary.
yes, yes and YES
I'm a lifelong id Software fan and I'm here to confirm that the Quake remaster is excellent. I've totally hooked on the Switch version. The only thing this review left out (that I can think of) is the inclusion of bots for multi-player practice; as someone who is new to Quake deathmatching I really appreciate having the ability to warm up without getting embarrassed by other players.
Quake dm is so fun
Yeah you think you're pretty cool for completing the game on normal. Then you meet the Nightmare guy that kills you before you knew he was there
I'm 4 years younger than this game and I've been playing the Switch version a lot lately. It's so much fun than I thought it'd be, it's unbelievable how well this game has aged.
Like a fine, brown wine.
@@keanmccracken7638 No I win.

Damn! I’m 11 years older than Quake and remember its original release fondly. Hell my mum loved Quake and still does!
@@kapsaysin No I win i'm 11 years younger than quake
I hope this backlash doesn´t endure for a long time
I think this remaster was an absolute home run by all accounts. I have such a hard time trying to find faults with it.
@14:55 "of nine inch nails fame" yes, OSCAR Winning musician Trent Reznor, Composer of the PIXAR movie SOUL. My how time flies.
As someone who was nearly 30 when Quake came out, I have to say they nailed it. They added just enough modern touches without ruining what made it special. It sounds funny to say, but it's worth playing just to enjoy the soundtrack. The mazelike design and secrets are lots of fun, too.
I'm 15 and I'm planning on playing the PC version of it. Looks sick, I really like FPS games like doom eternal, and Quake for sure deserves a shot.
Hope you like the game.
Glad to hear you're enjoying timeless classics, and reboots of such. Have fun!
I haven't played it yet but you made me look at them torches. Awesome!
@@alaididnalid7660 yeah, cool stuff
They nailed it with this remaster! I love the fact that I can multiplay The Bad Place (DM4) [the best map ever in my opinion] again! I played it to death in de early days. I'm loving playing it again. The single player also looks and plays fantastic. 10 out of 10 for me. And you did a great job with your review vid!
They ruined bunny hopping, changed hit boxes, among other things. It looks good, but isn't faithful to the original.
Great timing on your part! I hope you enjoy the game 😁
literally sounds like my experience lol.
We need Quake to get the DooM 2016 treatment. Modern graphics and gameplay without sacrificing its core, feel, or themes.
Hopefully the remaster can generate enough interest that Quake can get the sequel it deserves, horrifying Lovecraftian evil and all
I don't think so. Quake, like Doom, are great as they are. But any good new game is good news.
@@jorts_master69 I hope so.
Great review, I like how you covered the subtle details in the graphics/sound between the remaster and the original versions.
Just found out about this remaster, I’m hyped to play it. Wish they would remaster Quake 2 as well, that one was my favorite
I wouldn’t be shocked if it happened in the next years. There’s Quake 2 RTX if you have the video card for it.

I love the sound effects of this game - So chilling, intimidating and dark. I remember first playing this on demo on PC back in 96 when I was just 9 years old and being terrified of the AI and the overall moody, gritty nature of the game. I'll definitely purchase it for the Switch.
I might get it on my pc I'm thinking about it

@@RomannTW i know. Those dips are very minor for me honestly. Not enough to make me go crazy.
Micdrop!
The remaster is absolutely awesome!!. Just needs an update to bring dynamic lighting and Ray tracing to make this thing Way beyond over the Top!!..
another thing they did in an attempt to improve the difficulty was changing the backpedal speed by half so melee hits are harder to avoid
Great review. Thanks!
Love the side by side comparison shots.
The production values always shines bruh...keep it up, well done 💯
The soundtrack is, was, and forever will be the shit! Same for Mick Gordons Doom Soundtrack.
It's a shame that the remaster soundtrack is not right. Compare the CD or youtube copy of the soundtrack and you'll quickly hear that they've somehow stripped all the treble from the remaster soundtrack. It sounds muffled and awful.
Imo Quake 2 has much better soundtrack.
I definitely get the sense that MachineGames took influence from Arcane Dimensions with the way they built the new episode.
...I loved it so much, I'm working on a little mod for it now... we'll see how that goes :)
The soundtrack of Nine inch nails is just a hell of a score. One of my all time favorite game score. The game truely was a marvel after DOOM 1&2.
Your work is incredible! I can't wait to see your rise to fame
Best review I’ve seen so far.
I’m disappointed there’s no Mac version, since there was such a Mac Quake community back in the day.
Nailed it. Review - Nailed. Remaster - Nailed. Copious amounts of monsters - Nailed.
One of the best comparisons I've seen for one of the best games ever
I've never played quake before! With this new remaster, I plan to play it all!
I was born in 1992 and played this on release when I was 5. The Ogre’s grenades and Fiend’s growls are some of the most formative sounds in my brain lol.
Also the original ogre model is better.
I was 10 in summer 1996 playing this game alone while my parents were at work. Shit was creepy af.
The new Machine Games maps look fantastic! I can see inspiration from Arcane Dimensions, Rubicon 2 and Tronyn's maps.
Thank you for this video, there is a surprising lack of reviews of this remastered
This game was a big part of my childhood, but I never was able to play the proper original version of it
I had Quake 64 instead.

I'm down"
Now up to the final stage on normal in my first ever blind playthrough with the Witch mother or something and I'm having loads of fun with this on my Xbox Series X. Despite how hard it is it just has a way of making you want to keep going. I've never played a challenging game that's so addictive. What great value for 15 dollars.
Having this on the switch is a DREAM
I have the PS4 version and man does it run smoothly as hell. NightDive is the king of remasters and Id software is the undisputed king of FPS games. It’s definitely a 5/5.
Just bought this on sale for PS4 super excited! First time I get to play this!
FANTASTIC video Kirk. You legit inspired me to make my own quake video !! That’s a sign of great work !!! Love your content dude
I want a true sequel Quake 2 that lets us play as either Ranger or Deathknight from champions... with coop.
Really like the comparisons. Also have to admire the pace at which you are making these videos. Can't wait to see your take on Quake.
This was the first game that I couldn't play with the lights off. Scared the HELL out of me, and I loved every minute of it.
I got the free Steam upgrade. That was a heck of a nice surprise. Quake was my first online Gaming experience back in '96 and so the first thing I had to do was jump back into online play. Reunited and it feels so good 👍
Loved all the Doom games and Quake speciali Quake 3 😍
I sure hope they add the quake 3 MP for the remaster
@@ginger3467 that would be great
Happy to note, that I've been playing through the original game, and first two expansions so far, and I don't think I've run into any of the bugs you've listed so far. And for the couple of months I've had it on my PC's it's been getting nearly weekly updates. Last one I saw was some tweaks for online play and maps.
Now the question is, could Quake make the trip to VR? Do we think VR will get good enough for a fast paced FPS like it?
Quake absolutely deserves a remake
on idtech 7 or unreal engine 5
I hope, if they make a sequel/reboot they finally combine the Quake 1 and Quake 2 universe/storylines. It actually wouldn't be all that would impossible: with the world hopping and all. I'd love to see Lovecratian elements and then the Strogg are thrown in to the mix. 🤞
if/when arcane Dimensions comes to this engine, then yes, this is TRULY worth getting, cause Arcane Dimensions are a damned must have!

Absolutely NiN Nailed it!!! So good to hear that soundtrack again while playing through this classic game after soooo many decades
When I played that game that first time, it was at 320x240, yea, the typical PC in 1996 was not really up to the task lol
In my opinion it ran surprisingly well on a Pentium 120 MHz, even without a good 3D card such as the VooDoo Banshee.
I kinda like that "ring" like, stop motion animation, pure horror
Hell dad and I ran through various run and gun games together long before then where if we got remotely close to winning we were getting kill counts that could meet or beat the kill totals needed to win in games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake
In most shooters of that era my first two thoughts when I start playing were "Where's a full-auto weapon?" and "Where's a Shotgun?" Now it isn't uncommon to start with a full-auto weapon and even back then it happened sometimes like in Duke Nukem 3D (Which I only played when no one else was home for obvious reasons) but its still very rare AFAIK to start a shooter with the Shotgun or Shotgun equivalent.
thanks god i stumbled over this Vid.......loved Quake way back then and now i can love it again, got me it right away on steam.....
they actually have the good ole timedemo ( for fps check ) in it too, so cool.....so far loving it all over again !
I've run into the game loading bug too! I thought I was doing something wrong.
